The one where we talk with Journalist and Author David Neiwert about his 35 years of covering the Radical Right, Eliminationist rhetoric, and how the old playbook hasn't changed much. Here are some of the sources we used, as well as more information on some of the subjects we discussed:Richard Mack - Constitutional SheriffsChris Rufo on Curtis "Mencius Moldbug" YarvinThe Stranger, Seattle's Hometown Newspaper, on Chris Rufo's withdrawal from the City Council raceBill Morlin -- How journalists should cover hate and hate groupsA&E Forensic Files episode on the Phineas Priesthood with Bill MorlinDead Kennedys - Nazi Punks Fuck OffDavid Neiwert on Louis Beam“This was explicitly laid out by one of these leaders, a man named Louis Beam, who was a top lieutenant in the Aryan Nations organization in northern Idaho. Writing in his magazine The Seditionist, in an essay titled, “Leaderless Resistance,” he advocated the formation of independent cells of militias that could spring into action when needed. And he encouraged “lone wolf” attacks by violent believers – attacks that would undermine public confidence in the ability of a democratic society to keep them safe and secure.”"Lone Wolves Connected Online" - New York Times article on Louis BeamThe Kehoe Brothers "Of Orcas and Men", David's "whale book"“In Of Orcas and Men, a marvelously compelling mix of cultural history, environmental reporting, and scientific research, David Neiwert explores how this extraordinary species has come to capture our imaginations--and the catastrophic environmental consequences of that appeal. In the tradition of Barry Lopez's classic Of Wolves and Men, David Neiwert's book is a powerful tribute to one of the animal kingdom's most remarkable members.”This is our current events recap program, where we offer our takes on what's going on at the bleeding edge of the information war. For Episode 72 I'm welcoming Adam Vernick to the podcast for the first time. Adam has a pretty diverse list of bands he has played in over the years. For this episode, we talked about all of the bands he was a part of in Rochester and Buffalo. The bands we discussed are To Fester Within, Can I Say, Still Ill, No Goal, Witness, Of Wolves, How We Are, False Positive, and Lemuria. Adam also talks about relocating with his family back to Rochester during the pandemic. As always, there's plenty of talk about early 2000s Rochester Hardcore mixed in the conversation. I'm going to have Adam on again later this year to talk about the bands he played while he was living in Seattle. Lastly, Adam wanted me to mention he was listening to the song "No Regrets" from the band Warzone right before we started doing the interview. https://www.patreon.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast https://www.instagram.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast https://www.facebook.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast https://twitter.com/podcasthardcore https://m.soundcloud.com/rochesterhardcorehistory --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support
In yet another trip down memory lane, I am joined by Nate Golia for Episode 70. Sticking with a common theme of the podcast, I got to catch up with an old friend and reminisce on Rochester Hardcore, mainly the early 2000s era. We talk about the bands Nate was a part of, including Stars Shall Fall, Warblade, Of Wolves, and The Red Death. We also talk about the band Nate has been working on with a few people from Rochester, Newark, and Syracuse tentatively called Worldpurge. As always, a lot of memories and anecdotes are mixed in the conversation as well. We also talk about a couple embarrassing mosh memories. There's a few classic Rochester Hardcore shows from the early 2000s that get brought up again. Like I said in the intro to the episode, I'm still just scratching the surface on interviewing guests from what I consider the Golden Age of Rochester Hardcore. You can find music from Stars Shall Fall, Of Wolves and many classic Rochester bands on the Rochester Hardcore SoundCloud. Synopsis: This is the audio version of the 1-page article I wrote entitled, When to Dance Between Two Opinions, in which I attempted to capture a burgeoning realization, which I anticipate will be a "leveling up" of a major shift in the most important shiur I gave last year: Of Wolves, Men, and Methodology.----------Today's Torah content has been brought to you by the generosity of my Patrons on Patreon.----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Description In this episode, Dr. Janet Gyatso discusses how she teaches her students about posthumanism and animal ethics in her courses on Buddhist Studies. She is the Hershey Professor of Buddhist Studies and Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs at Harvard Divinity School. Quotes “Part of what I'm trying to do is set aside all the mythology and ideology that we have and try to see animals for what they are.” Janet Gyatso “Posthumanism is an attempt to ratchet down the centrality of humans, in our thought, in our discourse, in our vision of what's important, and to decenter the human.” Janet Gyatso “We don't only use our rational minds, we never only use our rational minds, we always are embodied, it's only the question of what we can foreground and be aware of.” Janet Gyatso Links and References Autobiography of Jigme Lingpa https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691009483/apparitions-of-the-self Donna Haraway Rosi Braidotti https://rosibraidotti.com/publications/the-posthuman-2/ Dipesh Chakrabarty Amitav Ghosh, The Great Derangement https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/G/bo22265507.html Eduardo Kohn, How Forests Think https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520276116/how-forests-think Jane Bennett, Vibrant Matter https://www.dukeupress.edu/vibrant-matter Franz De Waal Carl Safina, Beyond Words https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780805098884 Barry Lopez, Of Wolves and Men https://bookshop.org/books/of-wolves-and-men/9780684163222 Robert Macfarlane My Octopus Teacher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s0LTDhqe5A&ab_channel=Netflix Peter Singer, Animal Liberation https://www.amazon.ca/Animal-Liberation-Definitive-Classic-Movement/dp/0061711306 Christine Korsgaard, Fellow Creatures https://global.oup.com/academic/product/fellow-creatures-9780198753858?cc=ca&lang=en& Alice Crary, Inside Ethics https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674967816 Thomas Nagel, What is it like to be a bat? https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/iatl/study/ugmodules/humananimalstudies/lectures/32/nagel_bat.pdf Cows coming out after winter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA8dAnlD51o&ab_channel=CowSignals James Rebanks, The Herdy Shepherd Janet Gyatso on Harvard Divinity School website https://hds.harvard.edu/people/janet-gyatso
In today's Lomdeha Friday Seminar (2/19/21) we learned a pischa (or pesichta) - that is, a midrashic introduction to Megilas Esther. We explained the main idea of the midrash and how it serves as a thematic framework for reading the megilah, and we concluding by connecting this theme (albeit with a speculative theory) to the obligation to get drunk on Purim. For a written version of 80% of this shiur, check out my article entitled: Human Expectations and Divine Redemption. In tonight's Topics in Jewish Philosophy shiur (2/18/20 at YBT) I attempted to capture and articulate an epistemological upheaval I recently underwent, triggered by my binge-reading of Barry Lopez's award winning wildlife book "Of Wolves and Men" (1978). As I mention at the outset, I was hesitant to give this shiur because I was skeptical of how much value it would be to those who hadn't accompanied me on the wild journey of reading this book. At best, I would be able to convey the insights I gained in a meaningful way. At worst, I would come across as a lunatic raving about wolves and their connection to our learning of Torah and our practice of Judaism. I'll leave you to be the judge of my success or failure! Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments!----------מקורות:"Of Wolves and Men" (1978), by Barry Lopezרלב"ג - הקדמה לתורהספר החינוך - מצוה צ"ה: בנין בית הבחירה ----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Beyond the Page: The Best of the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference
On Christmas morning, 2020, the writer BARRY LOPEZ died in Eugene, Oregon, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with prostate cancer. Widely honored as one of our greatest writers about the natural world – in non-fiction classics such as “Of Wolves and Men,” “Arctic Dreams,” and “Horizon” – for half a century Barry traveled the globe – High Arctic to Antarctica, Oregon to Kenya – bringing back stories etched in luminous prose that explored our profound connections to the diverse, fragile planet we inhabit. Two weeks before his death, Barry received the first Sun Valley Writers’ Conference WRITER IN THE WORLD PRIZE, given to a writer whose work expresses that rare combination of literary talent and moral imagination, helping us to better understand the world and our place in it. As you might have gathered, my two favourite things are dogs and films. (Jaffa cakes (the posh ones) close third.) So, I was very delighted to talk to to the very talented Dominic and Ian Higgins. Do check out their spectacular back catalogue - they run Pixel Revolution Films and they are attracting lot of attention at international film festivals - a cutting edge mix of reality and art. This was recorded on the day of the premiere of their new animated short film Of Wolves and Men. You will love it, I promise you. And lovely Peter Egan did the voice over. Their next film will be Fleur, the beautiful little collie cross who has graced our magazine covers twice - a doggie Kate Moss. She had been very badly mutilated in Romania. Gov-sponsored canine genocide had seen the streets cleared of dogs and them being 'spayed' by people who definitely weren't vets. Fleur hadn't been properly stitched back up and her insides were falling out when the photos did the rounds on Facebook. It's an epic story of a dog refusing to die and never giving up trust in humans despite barbaric treatment. Well guess what, we helped Wendy and Andrew get Fleur's story published as a book. And guess who saw the front cover on Amazon and fell in love.... well only the Higgins' brothers from Pixel Revolution! Here's a link to Of Wolves and Men....https://youtu.be/DieDRSneYmE

In this episode I had the opportunity to talk with Koady Fraser from Of Wolves and Men. Koady has been a husband for fifteen years and is the father of five. His life and the trials that he has faced are evident in his writings, and he leverages his hard earned wisdom to encourage and challenge men raise the bar and fulfill their role. "Of Wolves and Men was created to fill what I personally feel is a void. A gap in influence that needs a voice. I look around today and see the trends. I see the way that things are going and I worry for our future generations. I have three sons and two daughters. I hope that my sons can grow to be men with morals and values. Men that are strong in body and in mind. I hope that when my daughters are grown, they are able to find protectors, providers and all around great men to marry and raise my grandchildren with. Society at the moment is crucifying masculinity. I truly believe that without it we are doomed. There are many interpretations of what it means to be a masculine male today. Of Wolves and Men is my own." Barry Lopez won the National Book Award for Arctic Dreams, a ''rich, abundant, vigorously composed'' (Boston Globe) meditation on his travels in the barren but beautiful far North. His other work includes Of Wolves and Men, Crow and Weasel, and Resistance. Texas Tech University's Visiting Distinguished Scholar, he has earned Guggenheim, Lannan, and National Science Foundation fellowships. In Horizon, Lopez immerses readers in six far-flung regions of the world as he ponders man's explorations and exploitations of nature amidst a very personal search for purpose in a fractured world.
