It's time to bring back tricorns. Or at least beating up the French. Those snooty wine chugging bastards like to get atop their high horse and tell you how much better they are. So how about a French film where a bunch of Frenchmen get assaulted by an American. And then by another Frenchman. We have Brotherhood of the Wolf[2001]. It's a fictionalized telling of the Beast of Gevaudan. A true event where the french countryside was terrorized by a, possibly, man eating wolf. A naturalist and his Native American blood brother. They're investigating the event and discover there's quite a bit more afoot than meets the eye. An investigation … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 237: Saint Brotherhood"

Courtesy of the illustrious David T. Smith, author of The Gin Dictionary, Disco Cocktails, and other fine bibulous publications, I and a group of friends were treated to a rare Chartreuse tasting after we had wrapped up all of our work at the American Distilling Institute's annual conference and trade show this past August in Baltimore, MD. Our casual panel of tasters included: Eric Zandona, author of The Tequila Dictionary and The Bourbon Bible Sara Sergent, botanical savant and owner of Alpine Distilling in Park City, Utah Joe Barber of Stargazey Spirits and The Wrecking Coast Distillery in the UK And Reece Sims, creator of Flavour Camp Here's a (hopefully) somewhat complete list of the stuff we tasted, which may explain our silliness toward the end: The standard Green Chartreuse and Yellow Chartreuse - but these were both taken from the soleras or “infinity bottles” of David T. Smith, so they felt a bit more special Liqueur d'Elixir - A tribute to one of the early proto-variants of Green Chartreuse - this is essentially a half-step between the elixir vegetal and Green Chartreuse 9iere Centennaire - A tribute to the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Order of St. Bruno (also known as the Carthusians) Chartreuse Verte VEP (that's the fancy green Chartreuse) A bottling by the French Order of master Sommeliers from 2018 - which is a small batch, custom variant of Yellow Chartreuse Tarragona, which is another Chartreuse recipe, celebrating either Tarragon (the herb) or the formulation that the monks made when they were in exile in Spain for a couple decades in the early 20th century Three variants of Chartreuse Genepy (the traditional, intense, and abrupt) And finally, a lovely Florio Amaro bottled in the 1970s, provided by yours truly. Other topics we discuss include: The Carthusian monk documentary entitled Into Great Silence The mythical “beast of Gevaudan” that ravaged the French countryside once upon a time The taxonomy of the Artemisia botanical family A whole bunch of strong cocktail-related opinions about Chartreuse and genepy, And much, much more

Like a lot of fairy tales, early versions of “Little Red Riding Hood” were quite a bit different from the story most of us heard growing up. There was no heroic huntsman with an axe, there was no tricking the wolf into a well. At the end of the tale, girl and grandmother were both devoured, and the only happy-ever-after was for the wolf. For most of human history, wolves have been a source of real darkness and fear—and for most of human history, that reputation had been entirely undeserved. But not always. Every now and again, growling, sharp-fanged beasts have wreaked havoc throughout the land, a grim reminder of primordial times when mankind was just another target to fill an empty stomach…and at least part of the origin of the werewolf stories we still love telling today. So there is so, so much good in this episode. First, we discuss the Beast of Gevaudan, a crazy cryptid/ wolf that terrorized the countryside in Gevaudan, an area where the French believed the dark enchantments of the forest still held sway. The beast seemed to terrorize the French countryside in the area known as Gevaudan, striking from out of nowhere and disappearing just as quickly. Many tried to catch the beast, and many claimed they had but the attacks only stopped after a local man shot a large wolf on the slopes of a nearby mountain. We discuss what kind of animaal the beast might have been, look into the history surrounding the beast and even give our own thoughts on what we think it might have been in this fantastically wolfy episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

Questions Covered: 01:27 – What is the history of the use of the tetragrammaton/divine name in worship, particularly as it relates to Jehovah’s Witnesses? 07:44 – I heard your show where you mentioned a study in India on near death experiences where the people in India would see some spirits that were either good or evil spirits. Christians see angels, good or bad. So non-believers could argue that the fact that people don’t see the same thing is proof that these visions are due only to chemical reactions of a dying brain. How would you respond? 13:52 – What would be the best way for us as Catholics to answer some Protestants who claim what's happening in Israel right now has to do with the 2nd coming of Jesus that in there minds is gonna happen soon or at any moment? 17:49 – Which allegedly evidential NDE do you think is the strongest? 23:57 – If the Pope has the keys to heaven and hell, could the Pope/Church canonize someone that God would not have allowed into heaven by ordinary means, but since the church/pope utilized the authority of those keys they now get in? what about the reverse a just person going to hell because the church invoked the keys of authority to condemn them? 28:25 – From what I understand, the Jesuits are not allowed to hold positions of Authority or power. Is this true? And if so, did it change to permit Pope Francis to be Pope? 29:55 – Maybe better for a weird questions episode but I recently had several blessed, holy objects go missing around the house and it occurred to me, if it WAS demons, is there 34:53 – From my 15 year old : Is God alive both scientifically as well as theologically? 39:30 – From my 13 year old: In the Skinwalker Ranch episode of Mysterious World there were three wolf- like activities and one of them was a wolf-like creature running around in the horse pen. One thing that I realized was that the description for the wolf was almost the same as the beast of Gevaudan. Do you think the beast could have been a skin walker? They were both red, had poofy tails, head like a wolf, heyena like bodies and boar like legs. I’d like to hear your thoughts. 43:51 – I remember a very helpful episode where you discussed the career of Dr. Steven Greer. I have been very curious about what you know about the legitimacy of the UAP claims by Bob Lazar and David Grusch? 48:56 – How can we better understand the word “Belief” with regards to God and our faith, and do Catholics and Protestants (specifically Lutherans, understand this idea of belief in God differently). Is it just about saying you know of God's existence and profess to others that you know and understand of his existence; or, is there a deeper understanding of “belief in God” which also calls us to act or respond to this understanding of “belief” in Him. If there is a deeper understanding (or action) of belief, where do we find this ( in history, in scripture, or in the actual definition in or meaning of the word)? …

The Beast of Gevaudan is one of the classics of real werewolf stories. From murdering dozens of peasants in the countryside of France, to its paranormal powers of disappearing into the mist and defying death, it's no wonder many thought it was sent from the heavens above to punish them. However, this story is full of political intrigue and power plays that factored into making this beast what we think of today, but was this beast truly a demon on Earth or was it something more... mundane? Find out in today's episode!!! They say you can't keep a good horse down, but that's certainly true for Cryptid Campfire! We're back everyone and we're sharing the good news with everyone! Thanks to all the fans who never left in the time we were on our indefinite hiatus, but we're proud to be back making a quality episode once a month!
Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be considered disturbing, frightening and in some cases even offensive. Listener Discretion is therefore advised. Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I'm your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the things that go bump in the night, frighteningly imagined creatures, supernatural beings and even some unsolved mysteries but I promise, all sorts of weirdness. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today's Dark enigma well, we have another listener suggestion; it's a quickie! So, with that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say Gévaudan that will be a single shot and every time I say France, that will be a double shot. Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so don you best beret, grab your best bottle of wine and some stinky cheese as we dive deep into today's offering of When the Beast of Gévaudan Terrorized France From June 30, 1764 to June 19, 1767, between 82 and 124 people were victims of the Beast of Gevaudan! These attacks took place in a vast territory which today covers the French areas of Lozère, Cantal and Haute-Loire. From the outset, these events will take on a considerable scale due to international media coverage without equal at the time! Engravings of the Beast are published everywhere, from Paris to San Francisco! This territory does not play a major role in the economic life of the Kingdom of France, so why such an impact? Gévaudan is a fairly poor breeding ground. The north of Gévaudan where the Beast rages is separated between the Aubrac plateau and the Margeride Mountains. Far from being as wooded as today, this vast territory is made up of moors and grazing meadows punctuated by groves and a few thin forests. This rough country fueled the imagination of the chroniclers of the time. But it is the press that explains the scope of this case.
In today's episode we take a look at the mystery behind the monster that plagued the French countryside in the 18th century, but what exactly was the beast of Gevaudan? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This is the story of the Beast of Gevaudan as recorded by historians and eyewitnesses, designed to further your obsession with all things historical and supernatural while demonstrating just how close James Grant came to the factual events in his fictional short story, "The Wild Beast of Gevaudan." I retell the legend from beginning to end, recount the heroics and the foibles of the important players, and comment on Police Activity in Albuquerque, because every good story should have taken a left at Albuquerque.
This week I delve into the legend of the Beast of Gevaudan, the terror of 18th century France. The Beast would kill over 100 and attack many more over the span of 3 years, but what exactly was the Beast? Come along with me this week as we explore the story from the perspective of a 19th century author, James Grant, as he writes a fictional account that reads like nonfiction. It's a terrifying tale told and retold over the years, growing in it's retelling as only a true Legend can. Is it a wolf, is it a werewolf, is it some hybrid creature, is it a trained lion sent to murder on behalf of some psychotic serial killer of a master? Follow along with me to see what the sensationalists and the sceptics have to say.
Have you heard this historic story of a beast, or beasts, that roamed the French countryside wreaking havoc known as the Beast of Gevaudan?
Zach & Zo step into 18th Century France and are joined by special guest host, actor and podcaster, Rossie McCree; the three are set to bare witness to a ravaging beast on the countryside that's killing hundreds of women and children. Between 1765 and 1767; a creature terrorized a rural region of France and killed over one hundred people. At the time, many presumed this beast to be a wolf. It's a warm welcome back to one of my favourite guests Ken Gerhard for a long overdue catch up since his last appearance back on Episode 120! Ken's had a hectic year with conferences, filming, expeditions and more and gives us a break down of some of the things he's been up to this year. We cover his trip out to California on the hunt for the Giant Salamander, a creature that seems to be as elusive as many water based creatures and a trip to Bluff Creek to pay homage and help out at the Patterson-Gimlin film site. A brief foray into Bigfoot reports then leads us to finally get our teeth into Europe's most famous cryptid case, the infamous Beast of Gevaudan. It;s always a pleasure speaking with Ken and a big thank you to him for his time. Stephen Reid has our Patreon pick this week and has gone for the 2001 French action horror movie, Brotherhood of the Wolf. Directed by Christophe Gans and starring Samuel Le Bihan, Vincent Cassel, Émilie Dequenne, Monica Bellucci, Jérémie Renier, and Dave's man-crush - Mark Dacascos. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: In 1764 something was stalking the mountains of central France. A 'beast' that pounced on humans and animals with terrible ferocity. Indeed they beast became so notorious that the King of France dispatched envoys to find out what was happening and to kill the creature. By the end, the Beast of Gevaudan had killed over 100 people. To this day, no one is entirely sure what it was, a wolf? a hyena? or something supernatural? The Beast is a popular myth in France, albeit one rooted firmly in reality; somewhat surprisingly it is little known to the outside world, and perhaps incredibly it has never been made into a movie. Until now. Based on the true story of the Beast of the Gevaudan that terrorized France in the eighteenth century, the movie aims to tell first and explain afterwards. In the first part, a special envoy of the King of France, altogether biologist, explorer and philosopher, arrives in the Gevaudan region, in the mountainous central part of France. The Beast has been attacking women and children for months and nobody has been able to harm it or even take a good look at it. In the second part, our hero Chevalier de Fronsac will not only have to fight the Beast, but also ignorance, bigotry and conspiracy and will rely on two women, one an aristocrat, the other a prostitute, as well as the enigmatic Mani, an Iroquois he met in New-France (Canada). thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support

Stalking the people in the farming province of Gevaudan, France was a large black Beast. It was responsible for over a hundred deaths. The most shocking part of this cryptid was that it was real. Was it a wolf, a dog, or a mix of both that hunted people rather than livestock? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/withinthemist/support

Imagine the wild wild west, but in the Appalachians, but with a wolf infestation. Also, ooOOOooooo here comes the creepy Walmart pants!
“This animal is a monster whose father is a lion; it remains open what the mother is.” — Jean-Baptiste Boulanger Duhamel“I would be tempted to imagine that we are dealing with a witch, or the devil in person, if only I could believe it.” — Jean-Baptiste Boulanger DuhamelIt's the 1760s, in the Gevaudan area of South Central France. Imagine being a kid. Maybe 12 years old. Maybe as young as 8. You have heard the rumors. Maybe, you saw the mangled bodies. There's a monster out there. A monster that hunts people and eats them. It has killed people in the woods, on the pastures, and even just a few feet out of their homes. Time and time again, the men have gone out to try to put an end to the monster's reign of terror, but time and time again the monster has outsmarted them. Some say it's an animal that escaped a private zoo—a lion or a hyena, or something else you have never seen. Some people say it's a giant wolf. Some say a demon that can't be killed by bullets. Maybe, it's a werewolf. Just knowing that this monster wanders the countryside, right around your village… that would be terrifying. With this bloodthirsty beast roaming around, the door to your house doesn't seem that solid anymore, and any suspicious noise outside can make you jump. So, it's more than legitimate for you to think this is scary. But the reality is that this is nothing. Things don't get truly scary until you take into account the fact that someone has to go outside and take care of the animals. And I don't mean simply walking to the barn a few yards away from your house. I mean having to leave the relative safety of your home, go out there in the forest, and take them to the pastures, possibly for days at a time. Authorities have been warning people to stay home. Yeah… right… that's a sweet concept but is practically impossible. If you stay home, your whole family starves. Your father and mother have other jobs that require their presence on the land. Taking animals to pasture… that's your job. If you are lucky, you get to band with few other friends your age, and tend to the animals together, while you pray that the monster doesn't choose to come for you. Think about being a 10-year old kid, and that's your lot in life. This is the story of a monster that killed in the neighborhood of 100 people during the 1760s in France as well as the story of the men sent to hunt it. In the course of this episode, we'll tackle the entire saga of the monster's reign of terror, the mystery of the monster's identity, and the role that the press played in shaping the events.
