That’s Mad Ted! It seems like some stuff may have changed half way through Father Ted and we didn't even notice. This morning on Dermot & Dave, the lads were joined by Pauline McLynn who famously played Mrs Doyle in the Channel 4 show. She was on the speak about An Post releasing a set of four fun stamp designs marking 25 years of legendary sit-com, Father Ted. The stamps feature iconic one- liners now linked to each of the four main characters: “That’s mad, Ted” (Fr Dougal); “That would be an ecumenical matter” (Fr Jack Retro wallpaper in the background of each stamp matches the different rooms in the Craggy Island Parochial House. The specially designed stamp booklet (€5.70) by Dublin’s Detail Design Studio contains five stamps celebrating the characters, their famed catchphrases and the world created by Father Ted. Four €1 N rate stamps cover postage in Ireland (including Craggy Island), with a €1.70 ‘W’ rate stamp for postage worldwide. But while on Pauline revealed that the design team on the show changed after the first season, so eager eyed viewers will notices that the set actually changed a lot in the second season. Back on February 14 this year, Mickey and Hannah were joined by actor and one-woman cat herd Pauline McLynn and journalist, political commentator and comedian Ayesha Hazarika. Now then, there’s some stuff in here that is clearly just jokes and lols – we absolutely do not endorse alcoholism or stalking. But hopefully you already knew that. And it’s very much worth remembering this was recorded back in February before we were officially in a global pandemic,And so, please get ready for topics including the turn of a man’s ankle, Riverdance, some genuinely excellent advice, and Hannah’s shit, mud-covered, fully nude birthday. Among many other marvellous tangents. We recorded this in front of a live audience at King’s Place in London, so thanks to them, thanks to Emma Corsham for all things tech, and thanks to our lovely audience. They had a great time. And when we can host live gigs again, you should come along and have a great time, too. Oh, just one more thing: is Pauline the Nigel Farage of this panel? The story was later developed into a BBC Radio 4 afternoon play starring Stephen Mangan, Claudie Blakley and Pauline McLynn (2014).
Multi-hyphenates Daisy Haggard and Tiff Stevenson joined Mick and Hannah at Kings Place on the eve of the general election – oh heady days of hope! – for a cracking gig, which involved some very entertaining politics chat that led to us all living on an island with talking sharks. Ahh, we wish. There’s also a whirlwind lesson in yoga for Mick and Hannah, a lot of sweating when it comes to thinking of things we like about ourselves, crying in the tax office, Googling big gardens, passive-aggressive presents, full-on aggressive presents, and a whole mess of crisps. Our next live event is at Kings Place is on February 14, with excellent women Pauline McLynn and Ayesha Hazarika. Red Ladder, which bills itself as “Britain’s leading radical theatre company”, this year celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, tracing its roots back to the left-wing agitprop theatre of the 1960s. To celebrate, instead of its usual fare of new political writing, it has turned to Brecht’s Mother Courage and her Children, which artistic director Rod Dixon has staged as a promenade production in a warehouse in Leeds featuring Pauline McLynn (Mrs Doyle in classic sitcom Father Ted) in the title role. BTG editor David Chadderton spoke to Rod when the production had been running for nearly a week about the production, the company's other work and philosophy and fifty years of creating political theatre. Mother Courage and her Children by Bertolt Brecht, adapted by Lee Hall, opened at the Albion Electric Warehouse in Leeds on 28 September 2018 and runs until 20 October.
