Theatre director Robert Icke's production of Oedipus won best revival and a best actress award for Lesley Manville at last night's Olivier Awards - but his new play Manhunt is now demanding his attention at the Royal Court Theatre in London. The drama focuses on the story of Raoul Moat who attacked his ex-girlfriend and killed her new boyfriend before a stand-off with armed police which ended in his suicide. Samira talks to Robert Icke and to Samuel Edward-Cook who plays Moat. The Edwardian era - from Queen Victoria's death to the start of the First World War - is the subject of a new exhibition at the King's Gallery in London. Samira is joined by its curator Kathryn Jones from the Royal Collection Trust and by the historian and Alwyn Turner, author of Little Englanders: Britain in the Edwardian Era.The Swinging Sixties bring to mind films like Michael Caine's Alfie and the social realist dramas like Up The Junction. But A Touch of Love, released in 1969 and now getting a fresh outing on DVD, offers up an unusual female perspective on the era of free love. Margaret Drabble adapted her own novel the Millstone for the film which starred Sandy Dennis - alongside a young Ian McKellen in his first screen role. We hear from its director Waris Hussein - who also directed the first episodes of Dr Who.

We were all deeply saddened by the news of Darryl's passing in the weeks after we first spoke to him. We all had a great time talking to him and were in reverence of the deep well of his knowledge and dedication to exploring the deepest corners of pop culture. After we had finished recording, we had all discussed speaking again in 2025, after he had finished his latest book, which he believed he would be finished later this year. Our sympathies go out to his friends, family, and his husband, who he repeatedly referenced and clearly adored. We would also like to thank the person who reached out to us in the comments of our last episode to inform us of the tragic news. In this episode we spoke at length about about the history of queerness in popular music, Darryl's books, and some of his other interests. His passion was palpable and we are so grateful to have had this conversation with him. For more information on Darryl and his work, you can follow the links provided in WFMU's obituary, pasted in full below: WFMU sadly lost one of its own this past December 23rd. From 2018 until early 2024, Darryl W. Bullock hosted 250 episodes of The World's Worst Records Show on the Sheena's Jungle Room stream. In addition to having a taste for Mrs. Miller records, Darryl was also a music writer who explored the relationship between pop music and LGBT issues in books like David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBT Music, The Velvet Mafia: The Gay Men Who Ran the Swinging Sixties, and Pop, Pride and Politics: Music Theatre and LGBT Activism, 1970–2021. You can hear Darryl's shows here, and you can leave a remembrance here. Rest in peace, Darryl, and thanks for sharing your music with us.

Matthew Oates is a naturalist, nature writer, and poet with a lifelong passion for butterflies. In the short sward of the Cotswolds, Matthew takes David Oakes on a journey through his fluttery past. They discuss the writers who have inspired him, from Tolkien to Wordsworth and W.H. Hudson, and share stories of other notable butterfly enthusiasts, such as Sir Winston Churchill. Matthew explains his belief that true conservation is a blend of science and love. They also delve into the realities of developing a love for nature in the boarding schools of the Swinging Sixties - a time when his generation transitioned "from Molesworth to Jimi Hendrix in just three years," leaving little room for butterflies or a life-defining obsession with the intoxicating Purple Emperor. Their conversation also addresses modern concerns for butterfly conservation, including pathogens and parasites, the risks of unsanctioned releases, and the importance of single-species ecologists - “insects shout loudest and first.” Ultimately, this is a discussion about the metamorphoses of both the past and the future. Can fashion transform reality, or is it more a question of how the real world influences fashion? Dior's response lies in a deeply feminist collection, inspired by the Swinging Sixties, when Marc Bohan was at the helm of the label. South African brand Maxhosa resurrects ancient Xhosa motifs. Mossi, through his clothes and fashion school in the eastern Paris suburbs, hopes to give disenfranchised young people a dream to aim for. All are searching for the holy grail: fashion that's both beautiful and meaningful.
The Daily Beast reports Even Meghan's Dog Has Been Roped Into Selling Jam.Per the Beast, Mamma Mia—a Beagle who was rescued from an animal testing facility with eight pups—was adopted by Meghan and her husband Prince Harry in 2022, joining their other rescue dog, Guy.Meghan's friend, the noted Jam Enthusiast Abigail Spencer has been upstaged by photographs of Mamma Mia, nuzzling Spencer in the latest pictures. The presence of the dog playing with Spencer in what looks like a verdant garden suggests that the picture may have been taken at Meghan's $14 million Montecito home.Abigail Spencer's long-lasting friendship with Meghan started back in 2007. Spencer recently recalled the moment, while guesting on the Kelly Clarkson show, saying, "I was doing a pilot for NBC, and I went to read with the people who were supposed to play my best friend. They were testing other actresses. I walk in, I see this beautiful gorgeous creature at the end of the table and I'm like, 'Who is that?' We had an immediate something, you know? And her name is Meghan Markle.""It was just something between us. Our friendship really developed during that time, and deepened. She's an incredible person." We asked our royal insider if they had received one of the 50 jars of Meghans jam. Deep Crown told us:"Well, well, well. I must say, I'm flattered that you would think I might be among the chosen few, but alas, my pantry remains sadly bereft of the Duchess's culinary creations.. I imagine the list of recipients for Meghan's jam is a veritable who's who of the glitterati, carefully curated to maximize buzz and star power. But really, is this what we've come to? Speculating about the distribution list for a batch of strawberry preserves? I know the royal news cycle can be a bit slow at times, but surely there must be more pressing matters to discuss than the contents of Meghan's kitchen. We decided to ask Deep Crown about Rebel Wilson's Royal Orgy story from yesterday. They said, “"You know, there's an old saying in London: 'You hear a lot of things in this city, and some of them are even true.'”This is certainly a juicy bit of gossip, isn't it? A wild party attended by a minor royal, complete with drugs, orgies, and all manner of debauchery. It's the kind of story that would have the tabloids salivating and the social set buzzing for weeks, but here we are talking about jam.But you know, as salacious as these details are, I can't say I'm entirely surprised. The British aristocracy has a long and storied history of secret parties and illicit pleasures, dating back centuries. From the hedonistic excesses of the Hellfire Club in the 18th century to the drug-fueled soirées of the Swinging Sixties, there's always been a undercurrent of wild behavior bubbling just beneath the surface of polite society.Of course, the royals themselves are no strangers to this kind of thing. Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon were notorious for their wild parties and bohemian lifestyle, and there have been plenty of other royals over the years who have been caught up in scandals involving drugs, sex, and other vices. But the key word here is 'secret.' These kinds of parties and behaviors are rarely talked about openly, and when they do come to light, it's often in the form of rumor and innuendo, rather than hard facts. That's why it's so difficult to pin down the identity of the royal in question in this particular case - the aristocracy closes ranks around its own, and there's a powerful incentive to keep these kinds of stories under wraps.

A former Formula Ford driver who was a minicab chauffeur in London during the Swinging Sixties, he took a job driving a giant phallus through the city that became his introduction to the director. Honest, reliable, and ready to take on any task, Emilio found his way into Kubrick's neurotic, obsessive heart. He became his personal assistant, his right-hand man and confidant, working for him from A Clockwork Orange until Kubrick's death in 1999.View herePodcast Rewind:April 2024 - Ep. 29…The Making Of is published by Michael Valinsky. If you'd like to promote your products to 12,600 leading film, TV and video industry pros reading this newsletter, please email us: mvalinsky@me.com Get full access to The Making Of at themakingof.substack.com/subscribe

This week joining Kelly-Anne Taylor, in the studio, is the British actress, presenter and author, Joanna Lumley. Born in India, in Kashmir, Srinagar – she was brought up in the Far East, coming to the UK, aged 8, to attend boarding school. She went on to work as a model and actress, living in London in the Swinging Sixties – and made her name starring as Purdy in The New Avengers. She boasts a successful career – spanning over 6 decades – she had audiences in hysterics as Patsy in hit sit-com Absolutely Fabulous, has presented wonderful travel programmes – and, of course, captured the nation in Jan Etherington's radio show, Conversations From A Long Marriage – in which she stars alongside Roger Allum. In this episode, she talks about why she doesn't have a mobile phone and how difficult she found it to shed the ‘pretty girl' stereotype when she moved from modelling to acting. Plus, she talks about raising a child as a single mother, how playing Purdy in The New Avengers changed things financially for her and why she wishes sex scenes would be cut from TV and film. This week we're revisiting the legendary Jamaican journalist Barbara Blake Hannah. I spoke to Barbara at the start of last year and she blew me away. What. A. Woman. My guest today is the Jamaican author, journalist, film maker and (no exaggeration) living legend Barbara Blake Hannah.Already an experienced journalist when she arrived in London in 1964, Barbara was shocked to discover her achievements counted for nothing because of the colour of her skin. But she made headlines anyway, in 1968, when she became the first Black TV journalist in the UK. She lasted nine months before being dismissed - almost certainly as a result of a racist backlash, in which her employers sided with the racists… It was several years before another black journalist appeared in a news role on British screens. Without Barbara, arguably, there would have been no Moira Stuart or Trevor Macdonald. Now 80, Barbara has led a pioneering life, so it's a joy to celebrate it with the republication of her groundbreaking 1982 memoir, Growing Out - Black Hair And Black Pride in The Swinging Sixties, as part of Bernardine Evaristo's Black Britain Writing Back series. From her home in Kingston, Jamaica, which she shares with her son, Barbara told me what she learnt from being at the sharp end of racism, why the Black Lives Matter movement gives her hope, feeling new again at 80 and how she learnt to love herself as a Black woman. She also talks about the power and politics of hair and how she has the skin of a 12 year old! Plus she introduced me to my new mantra: time is longer than rope. • You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including Growing Out, Black Hair and Black Pride in the Swinging Sixties by Barbara Blake Hannah and all the other books in Bernardine Evaristo's Black Britain Writing Back series. Twiggy is one of those rare celebrities known by a single name. She was the girl from Neasden, north London who became the face of the swinging sixties. With her petite frame at just 5ft 6 Twiggy smashed the stereotypes of what it meant to be a supermodel. Her pixie hair cut and wide eyes will forever be iconic. As the model of her age she was propelled into the glamorous world of fashion and photography and later she found success as a singer, dancer and actress. She starred in Ken Russell's film The boyfriend – a performance for which she won not one by two golden globes. In 1983 her talents took her to Broadway for her debut in the musical My One and Only. She is a wife, mother, grandmother and of course fellow podcaster. She has said of her many successes “ I think I've had a brilliant career. If anybody embodies the spirit of a certain era of British fashion, it is Tanya Sarne OBE, founder of the iconic fashion label, Ghost. In this episode, Tanya shares her extraordinary life story, from her humble beginnings as a child born in the war to refugee parents, to travelling all over the world. Her journey had many remarkable moments along the way — moments she generously shares openly from the heart, with no holds barred. Tanya speaks about her time spent struggling as a single mum until her label redefined fashion and became a global success, all whilst coping with an addiction that took hold for 24 years. By her own admission, Tanya has led a very colourful life, one that is so jam-packed with stories you'll wonder how she managed to fit it all in. At the epicentre of the Swinging Sixties in London, Tanya's story is one interwoven with fashion, glamour, famous friends and travel. It is also a tale of talent, hard work, strength and utter resilience — and of a free spirit that remains totally, majestically undimmed. This week, Sadie tells us all about the inventor of the mini-skirt (and so much more!) popularized in the 1960s during the first "cool Britannica" era, also known as the 'swinging 60's' or the 'British invasion.' Quant's designs were accessible and liberating and reflected the changing attitudes towards gender and fashion of the era. Her influence on fashion and culture continues to be felt today, and she remains an icon of British fashion history. She also passed away the day this episode was recorded, making this episode a very timely celebration of the fashion designer's life and legacy in the world of design, style, art, and pop culture. Sixty years ago this month, the Golden Age of Radio signed off as CBS aired the final episodes of Suspense and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar on September 30, 1962. Both shows hung on as TV overtook radio in the late 50s and continued to produce new episodes even as more people across the country were turning on their television sets instead of their radios for dramatic programs. We'll hear Mandel Kramer as "the man with the action-packed expense account" in four of the detective's final radio adventures: "The Skimpy Matter" (originally aired on July 22, 1962); "The Case of Trouble Matter" (originally aired on CBS on August 5, 1962); "The Oldest Gag Matter" (originally aired on CBS on August 12, 1962); and "The No Matter Matter" (originally aired on CBS on September 16, 1962).
