LSE's Paul Dolan reveals how we can stop hating the people we disagree with, and how we can foster a more tolerant society. We like to think that we're tolerant, but many of us struggle to engage with people whose opinions differ strongly from our own – even if they might have something useful to contribute to the debate. We're all falling victim to what Professor Paul Dolan defines as beliefism. Now Paul joins us to reveal the importance of exposing ourselves to diverging opinions, and how we can lean into difference and create environments that are conducive to listening to one another. Well-functioning societies need and celebrate difference; Paul reveals how we can foster a more tolerant society. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

What do we actually need to live a happy life? Are marriage and children the pathway to fulfilment, or do they actually make you less happy? This week, Jill talks to someone who has studied these questions in depth and come up with some illuminating answers that not everyone wants to hear. Professor Paul Dolan is one of the world's leading experts on happiness, a professor of behavioural science from the London School of Economics, the author of several books on happiness, and host of the podcast, Get Happier, among others. He's spent more than three decades researching how we can measure and value the richness of the human experience, and what he's found is fascinating. One of the things we're often told from an early age is the best way for us to achieve fulfilment is to get married and have kids. But does the science align with the fairytale? Do we need to partner and procreate to be a fully actualised and contented human? Or can we be truly happy alone? This is an illuminating and validating conversation about the science of doing life solo. You can find out more about Paul's work through his website, learn more about his books here and check out his podcasts here. Have you ever set a goal and reached it only to find out the result wasn't what you were expecting? When it comes to setting goals, weigh loss is a topic that often comes up and, especially as women, one that both Claire and Serena have had a long history with. We'll also discuss the approaches to goal setting and how it's relevant to so much more than just weight In this episode we cover: The ideals that we have in our heads, especially when it comes to weight The mind blowing thing that happened when Claire's friend met her weight loss goal What's your "number"? Serena's experience with this given her extreme weight loss Why we think we want to meet our goals and what happens when we get there What is miswanting Putting a Needs Lens on Dr. Laurie Santo's Yale course "The Science of Wellbeing" The Life Conveyor Belt The problem with getting exactly what you wanted The outside in approach to meeting your needs Who are the happiest people and why? Professor Paul Dolan on Bringing More Pleasure and Purpose into Everyday Living. This bitesize episode challenges the stories we tell ourselves about happiness—stories that often equate fulfillment with high status, massive social media followings, or endless wealth. But as Professor Paul Dolan reveals, these ideas are often misguided. Real happiness isn't about chasing society's markers of success; it's about tuning into what genuinely brings us joy: spending time with friends, building meaningful connections, practicing kindness, playing sport, or simply enjoying music. It's time to rethink what truly makes us happy and embrace the power of simple, purposeful moments. Rodrigo's interest in organic farming began at the Universidad Catôlica in Santiago, where he wrote his thesis on organic pest control. This paper led him to work with some esteemed leaders in the world of organic grape growing, including Alvaro Espinoza, Alan York, Ann Kramer, and Paul Dolan and Mike Benziger. After working as Director of Winemaking at Benziger he returned to Chile In 2012. Huneenus Vintners hired Rodrigo to convert four Chilean wineries and vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming. Next working for the Huneenus family at Quintessa in Napa Valley. But his time working in Sonoma made him think about all the mountain vineyards that he wasn't familiar with, which is when Far Mountain was conceived. "Far Mountain, describes the vineyard sites we work with and the greater settings in which those vineyards lie. There is a beautiful symmetry in these places, in that they are not only special sites for wine growing, but places we are physically drawn to because of their splendor."
