On May 27, 2019, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, best-selling author (and Kara's friend) Tony Horwitz was on book tour for his latest work, Spying on the South: An Odyssey Across the American Divide, when he died suddenly. He left behind two sons and his wife, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Geraldine Brooks, whose books include March and Horse.  Dealing with Tony's death, taking time to grieve his passing and remembering their life together are at the center of Brooks' latest memoir, Memorial Days. Brooks and Kara reminisce about Tony's life, reflect on the challenge of grieving in a culture that is “averse to sad,” and ponder how Tony would have continued his “barstool democracy”  — an attempt to span the political divide already shaking the nation — under Trump 2.0. They also discuss her latest project, a chapter in Who Is Government?: The Untold Story of Public Service, edited by acclaimed author Michael Lewis, which will be released on March 18th.  This interview was recorded live at Sixth & I, a center for arts, entertainment, ideas, and Jewish life in Washington, D.C., and hosted in partnership with Politics and Prose Bookstore, Questions? Future energy technologies like fusion and hydrogen promise to be ‘game changers' that could power our world and fuel our future. Both solutions have been talked about for decades yet remain just out of our grasp - but for how long? Current renewables like wind and solar can't get us all the way to net zero while decarbonising carbon heavy sectors. Therefore, inventing, innovating and investing in future low carbon energy solutions such as fusion and hydrogen is key to success. But getting new technologies to commercial scale in time will require rapid collaboration on a global scale. So, what does the future of energy look like and what will the next five years hold? Here to help navigate the topic are a series of industry experts. Bob Mumgaard, CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems joins to extol the exciting potential of fusion energy, and what the technology means for the future of human development. Founding partner of AP Ventures, Kevin Eggers explains how to unlock the hydrogen economy and Lisa Rebora, Senior Vice President of Emerging and Future Business at Equinor discusses how to fund, support and foster future solutions.Show sources and credits: FT resources, UNFCCC, Politics and Prose Bookstore, The US State Department (DOE), BloombergNEF, ITER, CSPAN, IEA, UK Government. Back in 2016 the pizza restaurant owner James Alefantis began to receive a large number of abusive messages on social media. Confused and afraid, he goes online and to his horror discovers dozens of bogus articles describing how the basement of his pizza joint is being used to traffic and molest children. The architect of this so-called “child sex ring”, the fake articles conclude, is presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her inner circle. Later that year, Edgar Welch burts into the restaurant armed with guns. He fires several shots into a cabinet where he believes the children are being kept. In this episode of Bad People, criminal psychologist Dr Julia Shaw and comedian Sofie Hagen discuss the mental gymnastics required to believe in conspiracy theories and how such beliefs can lead to violence. Welsch committed a crime that landed him in prison and left the community traumatised, but he thought he was saving children, so does that make him a bad person? We discover that Welsch is not a special case, on the contrary, conspiracy beliefs are very common and we are all vulnerable to their potentially harmful influence. This special non-fiction episode includes commentary about the attempted insurrection on January 6th, 2021 and extended reading/listening/watching resources. Transcript available here Related to the complicity of Capitol police (be it active or passive) Aljazeera is reporting on the FBI's warning US Law Enforcement before the attack. They also have live updates pertaining to the insurrection, Donald Trump, consequences, and lack thereof. BBC News has an article called The 65 Days that Led to Chaos at the Capitol that helps track some of the key moments, predominately on social media, that led to Wednesday's action as well as the evolution of the Stop the Steal quote, movement. Unicorn Riot's reporting on Proud Boy's leader Henry Tarrio's arrest. Tarrio was arrested before the attempted insurrection, upon arrival to DC, because in December of 2020 he carried out a hate crime against a Black church in the area. His arrest revealed two illegal high capacity firearms. I think this one is particularly important because it helps illustrate that Wednesday's action was part of a steady violent escalation, very much reinforced by racism, rather than a spontaneous show of political ideology. PRX's podcast Reveal's most recent episode Democracy Under Siege dives into the attempted coup and explores a historical parallel Politics and Prose Bookstore has lecture/reading from On Tyranny author Timothy Snyder free on YouTube. It's a bit over an hour. The takeaway is, it can happen and it happens fast. It Could Happen Here is Robert Evan's podcast from 2019 that considers the possibility of a modern American civil war. Speaking of imaginings of a modern US civil war, Omar El-Akkad's American War is a work of speculative fiction that reads like historical fiction. As a former conflict journalist El-Akkad brings intense realism to his dystopia. 155. Tyler Cowen: Be Dynamic

Love Your Work

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2018 55:50

When your life gets too comfortable, you stop taking risks. Loss aversion takes hold and you become complacent. You stop innovating. You stop being dynamic. By the time you realize you've become irrelevant, it's already too late to change. This is one of the main themes behind the work of Tyler Cowen (@tylercowen). Tyler writes one of the most influential economics blogs in the world – if not THE most influential – at marginalrevolution.com. He's also an economics professor at George Mason University. In Tyler's book, The Complacent Class, he argues that Americans are getting too comfortable, and not taking risks – or, as the title would imply, they're getting complacent. Average is Over – another of Cowen's books argues. The complacency of Americans is leading to The Great Stagnation, another of Tyler's books. Instead of being stagnant, we should be dynamic. Keep learning, take risks, and step out of your comfort zone. This, Tyler believes, will lead to economic growth, which Tyler argues is a good thing in his latest book, Stubborn Attachments. I was thinking about the theme of taking risks and stepping outside of your comfort zone just before I wrote this intro in a cafe in Chicago. Moments prior, I was thinking about how – out of all of the places in the world – this cafe was not where I wanted to be in that moment. Not only had my Colombian visa application been rejected, but my first AirBNB stop in Chicago turned out to have a bedbug infestation – so I had to hastily move to a different one. But then I realized that while my life is riddled with problems in recent months – and if you're interested in details, listen to my recent notes right here on this podcast, especially "An Update on My Colombian Visa." While my life has these problems, these problems lead to growth. They're problems that lead to a lifestyle that I have built and that I continue to build. I could avoid all of these problems by living a more comfortable and stable lifestyle, but that wouldn't help me grow in the ways I want to grow. It would cause me to stagnate. Critically important, I've designed my life and work to withstand volatility – whether that's political, financial, or emotional volatility. Not only can I withstand that volatility, I can grow from it. I've built this outlook with the support of Tyler's thinking. I find him to have a holistic view of the economics that rule our world – with uncommon emphasis on art, culture, and creativity. So, this is perfect timing to have Tyler on the show. In this conversation, we'll explore: Why should you move? Tyler says that even if you're merely considering a change, that probably means you should make that change. He explains the data that tells you why. Is there a "next Austin" just waiting to explode in growth? Find out where that "next Austin" might be so you can get there first and take advantage of the opportunity. One way we get complacent is by trusting algorithms to make all of our decisions for us, whether that's on Netflix or Facebook or Amazon. How can you be "anti-algorithm", and how can being "anti-algorithm" help you be more dynamic.
