Sydney-based high school besties Genevieve Hewson and Lauren Emerson say they are two peas in a pod, both cut from the same cloth, which is an apt, because when this pair fell head over heels in love with hand-blocked silks, cottons and linens, hand-printed by local village artisans in India, they followed their passion & created a startup. So obsessed with the look, feel & process of these hand-printed textiles, based on designs by the girls, but using centuries-old Indian craft techniques handed down from one generation of artisan to the next, that when the idea hit Genevieve and Lauren to turn their passion into a commercial business in Australia, this dynamic duo just went for it. No business plan, no market research! After living in Rajasthan India, learning all things hand-blocked fabric making, they started Walter.g Textiles in 2012. These days their fabrics grace such glamour interiors as the global Soho House hotel chain, among others.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Originally aired January 11, 2021After needing a break from her career in film and TV, Sophie took a very fortuitous turn in her life by finding the most random job she could, milking camels. If you didn't realize camels could be milked, neither did I. To make a long story short, Sophie fell in love with camels and never went back to her old career. Her ongoing 5-year passion for camels has taken her to places like The Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and The Tirari Desert, Uluru, Michigan USA, Texas, and Rajasthan India. At some point in the pursuit to learn more about these amazing creatures, Sophie got the idea to cross Australia on foot while being accompanied by 5 wild (or “feral”) camels. This would not only entail catching and taming 5 out of upwards of a million wild camels that roam Australia, but also walking thousands of kilometers across the vast and void Australian Outback. Keep in mind, Australia is the geographic size of the US with 1/10th of the population. A wild idea indeed!Today Sophie joins us from just over the halfway point of the journey in the bizarre little town of Coober Pedy. In this podcast we will talk about the rape culture, its direful consequences, possible causes, and some practical remedies. I have come together with a female student, Parul Dhand from Rajasthan India, to tackle the common issue of rape which exists in India where, according to recently released official government crime data, there is a rape reported every 15 minutes. These statistics outline only those cases that are reported as many cases still go unnoticed. I will be discussing the reasons behind the shame associated with rape and what could be done to help and empower more victims to speak up and seek helpPlease note: A sexual assault is any sexual act that a person did not consent to, or is forced into against their will. If you have been sexually assaulted as an adult or as a young person, it is important to remember that it wasn't your fault. Sexual violence is a crime and needs to be reported. You may contact me on any of the following social media platforms:* https://www.facebook.com/healingjourneyy/ * https://www.instagram.com/healing.journeyy/ More useful links can be found here: https://linktr.ee/healing.journeyy
This podcast highlights a very important topic which is increasingly concerning in countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. As you may have been aware, in India there have been recent changes in the law which state that groping a child through clothing isn't deemed as sexual assault as there is no skin-to-skin contact or sexual intent. I have come together with a female student,Parul Dhand from Rajasthan India, to gain her views about this issue. The aim of this podcast is to raise awareness worldwide about the issues of public sexual harassment and sexual assault that are still taking place in countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. I hope that this podcast empowers women and gives them the strength to deal with the problems that they face and enables them to seek help if they have already been victims to such abuse. This podcast is not aimed to ridicule any state or country but to merely try and tackle the issues that women are facing daily. For those of you who are unaware of the term Eve teasing, this is described as staring, stalking, passing comments, and inappropriate physical touch. Perceived consequences of eve teasing include tight restrictions on girls' mobility, inability to attend school or work, girls being blamed, and causing family problems. You may contact me on any of the following social media platforms:* https://www.facebook.com/healingjourneyy/ * https://www.instagram.com/healing.journeyy/ More useful links can be found here: https://linktr.ee/healing.journeyy

Our guest this week is Arushi Lohiya, from Jaipur, Rajasthan -India. She is a marketing & branding strategist, an amateur poet, animal lover, and a Fibromyalgia warrior. She graduated top of her class from Iowa State University, USA in marketing. At one time she was also a national level sports player and managed to combine both of her passions with a dream job in sports marketing. She was accelerating up the corporate ladder with brands like Coca Cola, ESPN, and Kingfisher Beer, basically living her dream when in 2012 at the age of 22 she was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Since then she has not spent a single day without pain. Due to excruciating pain she can’t sit, or stand for more than 15 minutes and is forced to spend her days lying down prone confined to her bed. To support my weak muscles, she ties about 10-15 crepe/ace bandages all over her body. She hasn't sat for over eight years now. Fibromyalgia left her disabled both physically and emotionally. While Fibromyalgia turned her life upside down, she has somehow made peace with her current situation through remotely working from home as a freelance marketing, branding and social media strategist for the past 8 years. She has embarked on a quest to spread awareness about fibromyalgia. She states: "Surprisingly Fibromyalgia has given me a huge gift - discovering the poetry in me. I have been using poetry to spread awareness about fibromyalgia as well as my journey through this fight in order to inform people what goes behind the scenes and making sure to be very vocal about it in order to remove the social stigma and fight the isolation that comes with a chronic disease." A very positive attitude for sure!!

MK Sharma has been trying to preserve the history of the desert state of Rajasthan India in his Desert Cultural Center for almost 20 years. He has collected many rare historical artifacts into one museum which is mostly self funded. When we went to his museum we started talking to him and it was so interesting that I knew I had to come back to get an interview. He had seen so many changes in his state and was a wealth of information about the history and culture of his state. In this interview we talk about the importance of keeping your culture. He talks about how the young people are chasing money and fancy things that the West has to offer instead of how to live a balanced and tradtional life. We talk about his efforts to maintain history and how we should do this as well. Finally we talk about how things will change over the next 50 years and if there is hope in even maintaining this. This is an interesting episode because with Westernization and modernization many cultures are sure to be lost. How do we preserve our culture and who we are for the future?
