Welcome to the DMF. Where I try to find out what motivates people behind the scenes in the world of acting and entertainment. Today on the podcast I am talking to filmmaker and comedian: Meagan X Johnson. We talk her background. As always you can reach me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with my name Justin Younts. Thank you for listening and sit back and enjoy. I discovered my passion for improv in Savannah. After a challenging period during the pandemic, I found myself at a crossroads in my career. I had just finished my contract as a page at NBC, and with the hiring freezes across the industry, I was left feeling uncertain about my future. I had even considered going to law school, thinking I might have to give up my dreams of working in film and entertainment. However, moving to Savannah changed everything for me.  In Savannah, I connected with the Front Porch Improv theater, which became a pivotal part of my journey. The creative directors, John and Bri, mentored me and showed me the ropes of freelancing in the arts. They taught me the importance of community engagement and how to hustle for gigs, which was a game-changer for me. I learned that opportunities could arise from simply being present in the community, whether it was chatting with locals at a café or participating in events.  Through my work with Front Porch Improv, I was able to participate in various projects, including corporate workshops and youth outreach programs. One of the most rewarding experiences was working with underserved youth, helping them develop emotional intelligence and collaboration skills through improv games. This was especially crucial as kids were returning to school after the pandemic, and they needed support in navigating social interactions.  I also had the chance to host events and perform in comedy trolley tours around Savannah, which allowed me to combine my love for performance with my newfound appreciation for the local community. The connections I made through these experiences not only reignited my passion for improv and filmmaking but also solidified my decision to stay in Savannah, even after my relationship ended.  Reflecting on my journey, I realize how important it is to seek out opportunities and be open to new experiences. The lessons I learned from John, Bri, and the Front Porch team have shaped my approach to my career and life. I encourage anyone feeling lost or uncertain to explore their passions and engage with their community. You never know where it might lead you.  Please like, share, and subscribe to follow my journey and learn more about the transformative power of improv and community engagement. 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:00:05 - Guest Introduction and Early Life 00:01:30 - Career Shift and Move to Savannah 00:03:01 - Experience with Front Porch Improv 00:05:00 - Networking and Freelancing 00:07:45 - College Education and Influence 00:10:39 - Importance of Diverse Literature and Learning 00:10:42 - Discussion on Teaching and Curriculum 00:14:37 - Conclusion

Up next ►► You Don't Need College to Get a College Education, with Salman Khan | Big Think   • You Don't Need College to Get a Colle...   When Austen Allred was going to high school, nobody said anything other than: "Go to the best college you can, pay whatever it costs, study what you love. ‘Because as long as you graduate from college, you will be set for the rest of your life." After having been preached this for decades, Austen's generation was one of the first to realize that that's fundamentally not true. Today, we're getting to a point where people are rethinking college education, and they're weighing the costs and the benefits. There are a number of schools that if you just look at the outcomes of the students that attend relative to the debt that those students incur, most students would have been better off not attending that school in the first place. This is what sparked Austen's idea for Lambda School - a radical new model to college education. Lambda School is entirely online, and they train people to be software engineers and data scientists for no upfront tuition in exchange for a piece of what you'll make later. At Lambda School, you don't pay until you're hired. This experience became the foundation of Lambda School's rapid growth. Before founding Lambda School, Austen was the co-founder of media platform GrassWire. He co-authored the growth hacking textbook Secret Sauce, which became a best-seller and provided him the personal seed money to build Lambda. Austen's disruptive ideas on the future of education, the labor market disconnect, and the opportunity of providing opportunity at-scale have been featured in: The Harvard Business Review, The Economist, WIRED, Fast Company, TechCrunch, The New York Times, among others. A new Gallup poll finds that only 36% of Americans have confidence in higher education -- down 21 points from 2015. Giordano says something is fundamentally broken within the system. When it comes to colleges, there are a number of reasons that we're witnessing this. First is that students are paying an enormous amount of tuition. They're graduating with this huge student debt burden, and then they go to get a job, but they can't find a job because many of them get a useless degree. Only 37% of college graduates understand critical thinking, have the ability to solve problems. Many have difficulty interacting with coworkers. We are also seeing the left-wing indoctrination taking place on college campuses, the diversity, equity, inclusion initiatives and degree requirements that have been pushed into the system. This is all being forced upon students and now has some withdrawing from the system because they don't want the far-left ideology being pushed on them. Over the last couple of years we've had multiple guests questioning the economic and moral value of a college education. But Daniel R. Porterfield, the Aspen Institute CEO and former President of Franklin and Marshall College, strongly disagrees. In his new book, MINDSET MATTERS, Porterfield argues that in our age of rapid technological change, the college experience is particularly valuable, especially to young people from less privileged backgrounds. At a time when it's become fashionable to bash American universities, Porterfield's argument is a timely reminder of the personal and civic value of a college degree.Daniel R. Porterfield is President and CEO of the Aspen Institute, a global nonprofit organization committed to realizing a free, just, and equitable society. He has been recognized as a visionary strategist, transformational leader, devoted educator, and passionate advocate for justice and opportunity. At the Aspen Institute, Porterfield has worked to build upon the organization's legacy of societal influence and commitment to human dignity while positioning it for a future where it can make its most profound and lasting impacts. In recent years, the Institute has launched new initiatives focused on criminal justice reform, science and society, economic inclusion, grassroots and community leadership, and more. In the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado, where the Institute was founded and where it maintains its Aspen Meadows campus, it has broadened its partnerships with the local community through the Hurst Community Initiative and deepened its connection with its aesthetic and cultural heritage through the creation of a $20 million educational facility and creativity corridor celebrating the works of Bauhaus master Herbert Bayer, one of the founders of the Aspen Institute. To respond to one of the most urgent challenges of our time, the Institute created the Aspen Partnership for an Inclusive Economy (APIE) in 2019 with a founding partner, the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, and a $26 million multi-year commitment from Mastercard. Through APIE, the Institute is bringing together its networks and programs with a diverse range of public, private, and nonprofit leaders to help reconstruct our global economy so that it drives greater security, opportunity, and resilience for all. Prior to leading the Aspen Institute, Porterfield served for seven years as the President of Franklin & Marshall College, a national liberal arts college founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1787. Under his leadership, Franklin & Marshall set records for applications, fundraising, and fellowships; developed cutting edge new centers for student wellness, career services, and faculty excellence; and constructed a new athletics stadium and visual arts center.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE.
