With a new album out and a New York-based band in place, Billy Joel was starting to heat up in 1976. His show at the Bottom Line in Manhattan on June 10th of that year is the proof.   The album, Turnstiles, had just come out a few weeks prior. And the orchestra, as Billy was now calling the band, had been on the road for just over two months.    The performance was simulcast on seven radio stations, leaving listeners today with a crystal-clear document of the night. Billy and the band, now featuring Russell Javors and Howie Emerson on guitar, Doug Stegmeyer on bass, Richie Cannata on saxophone and organ, and Liberty DeVitto on drums, was a tight, well-oiled unit.    The night featured a handful of songs from the then-new record as well as concert staples from Piano Man and Streetlife Serenade. Sonically, the band straddled the New York grit of Turnstiles with the west coast feel of the previous two records.    These performances laid the groundwork for The Stranger in 1977, but a listen to this night reveals an energetic, fully-realized sound from a band hungry for success.    Join us as we dig deep into Live at The Bottom Line 1976.    Live remastered audio courtesy of Jamie Tate.   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod  Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T   Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor   Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing

Derek Adam Shreds the Guitar & Teaches How to Rock Out with Heart & Soul  Derek Adam came on to the music scene with his own blend of guitar driven rock and country music. His anthemic songs are full of hooks and heartfelt lyrics that tell the story of his journey. Whether it's an autobiographical tale, guitar driven anthem, drinking song, or Ballard, it's pure Derrek. It all started for him in a small town in Upstate New York, where Derek was surrounded by music at a young age. Guided by his parents' music collection, he developed a deep affection for classic rock and outlaw country. He picked up the guitar at the age of 10 and quickly playing along to all his favorite tracks. He played in local bands throughout high school and gained a reputation as a formidable guitar player. By the time he graduated; it had become clear that music was his career choice. He went on to attend Crane School of Music where he became classically trained on the guitar and learned the fundamentals of writing music. After honing his skills for four years at the university, Derek set his sights on NYC. He moved down to the city and began his climb. He started from the ground up by networking through former college friends and making new acquaintances. Although a writer at heart, his live shows gained a strong following. It wasn't long before he became an in-demand performer on the local scene, building a steadily growing fan base. In the studio, Derek is just as much at home and constantly growing as a musician. He recently had the privilege of working with Grammy winning producer, James “Jimmy T” Meslin of Dream Theater notoriety. This was a milestone as Dream Theater's John Petrucci has always been a strong influence on his guitar playing. Jimmy's influence can be heard on Derek's EP, “Silver Lining” which is laden with guitar driven anthems that show off his rock and roll influences. Most recently, Derek paired up with Kyle Berry, Luke Bryan's former guitar player, to work on new material. Their sessions at Red Panda Recording and with Richie Cannata from Cove City Studios lead to a return to roots for Derek that produced his recently released single, “The Road I Know”. Although it's early in his career, he constantly talks about the good fortune that has fallen upon him. Derek has his feet firmly on the ground while reaching for the stars. “I'm nothing without the love and support of my friends, fans and loved ones. For this, I am forever grateful. With them at my back, there's nowhere to go but upward.”

Liberty DeVitto Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson I can't stop smiling. How I adore Liberty DeVitto, and would even if he wasn't one of the greatest drummers of all time––Billy Joel's, iconic partner in music for 30 years. I've known Lib for 30-something years and every time I see him it's better than the last. Like fine wine, except neither of us is having any––unlike how it was when we met. We talk about that - his climb to stadium rock, the magnums of red, throwing up on his shoes––before Billy, Mitch Ryder, Vanilla Fudge, meeting Billy, Stevie Nicks, Only the Good Die Young, what Lib brought to it, love and their marriages, and marriages, and marriages, Richie Cannata, Russell Javors, Doug Stegmeyer, The Billy Joel Band, how Billy gave up an enormous opportunity out of love, loyalty and respect for them, and how it fell apart after 30 years of stellar music, fame & friendship. Sobriety, perhaps contributing to Lib's demise. We talked about the silence between them in the years that followed, Lib's resurrection, NYC Hit Squad with Ricky Byrd, The Lords of 52nd Street with the original BJ band, his bestselling memoir, https://amzn.to/2CP8qrg, an upcoming book about Santa https://amzn.to/3dS13li, and, his girls, girls, girls. Wife, daughters, and a new baby granddaughter, that is. The reconciliation with Billy, the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Band— playing and getting inducted into the Long Island off-shoot, and being featured in the rock doc, Hired Gun. Life is grand, better than ever. Lib is happy and grateful. And so much damn fun! Couldn't adore him more. Sitting down with Lib is like going home and being with family. The one you dig. Welcome back to our two-part series on Russell Javors. As the rhythm guitarist for Billy Joel, Russell was a fixture in Billy's band on record and on stage for much of their storied run from 1976's Turnstiles through 1986's The Bridge.    His playing was always understated and in service to the song, but at the same time an integral part of each track. And, he's a celebrated songwriter in his own right, contributing to artists including Karen Carpenter and Phoebe Snow.   In our last episode, we spoke to Russell's longtime bandmates Richie Cannata and Liberty DeVitto. We also heard from his son, Jesse Javors. For our conclusion, we're talking to the man himself, Russell Javors.    We'll hear about his teen years coming up with Liberty and Doug Stegemeyer, taking the stage with Billy, moving into a new career after the music business and much more.    Along the way, Russell reveals insights about his contributions to classic records and memories from the road. And, he adds his trademark wit to every story.    Join us as we speak with legendary rhythm guitarist Russell Javors.      ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com     Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod

Probably the last thing you think of when it comes to Billy Joel's music is reggae but that influence is there. And if it's subtle, it's because it comes from arguably the most understated member of the classic Lords of 52nd Street, Russell Javors.   In a band where the spotlight is squarely on the piano, Russell's rhythm guitar playing was tight, economical, and often in the background.   But it was always in the right place at the right time. To paraphrase drummer Liberty DeVitto, “You don't always notice what Russell is playing, but you'll notice when it's not there.”   Russell played on many of Billy's biggest hits and logged hundreds of shows over more than a decade touring with the band. Before that, he was part of Topper, the group that would become the longtime backing band for Billy.   And, he was always writing his own songs in the background. A few of which were released by different artists. His music, both with Billy and on his own, has shades of classic 70s singer/songwriters while also portraying his love of The Beatles, rockabilly, and reggae among other influences.   After departing the Billy Joel band before the Storm Front album, Russell made a radical, while ultimately fulfilling career change. And today, he's back on tour with the Lords of 52nd Street. Celebrating the music he and his friends help make into modern classics.   For this episode, we spoke with Liberty DeVitto, Richie Cannata, and Russell's son, Jesse Javors.   Join us for Part 1 of a very special two-part series on Russell Javors where we talk with some of the people who know him best.   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com     Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod

Usually, a late-career live album is a victory lap, an excuse to tour, or at worst, an excuse to make some extra cash. For Billy Joel, however, it was a sign that he was back on the scene.    Released on June 13, 2006, 12 Gardens Live is a two-disc set. It features performances from Billy’s groundbreaking run of a dozen shows at Madison Square Garden between January 23 and April 24 of that year.   In many ways, it feels like a retrospective: You have all the big hits, fan favorites, plus a handful of rarities that even hardcore fans never though they’d hear live.    But, 12 Gardens Live also serves as proof of concept for Billy’s return to touring after a two-year sabbatical. And, it sets the tone for his monthly Garden residency that began in 2014.    With the exception of Mike DelGuidice, who joined the fold in late 2013, the album features the new solidified lineup he’s used ever since. The exception to that is the return of saxophonist Richie Cannata, who played alongside Mark Rivera on this tour.    Other than that, this document laid the groundwork for the next 14 years and, hopefully many more to come.    Join us as we dig deep into 12 Gardens Live.   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod    Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor

Billy Joel is no stranger to awards shows and other accolades. Following 1977’s The Stranger, he’s won a handful of industry awards, was nominated for plenty more, and gave a few memorable — and in, one case, literally show stopping — performances.    And, when you’re tracking award show appearances over three decades, you also start noticing trends and changes within the industry and its major players over the years.    But before taking a look back, we have some exciting news for Billy Joel fans: The core of the classic Lords of 52nd Street band has reconvened to record with another East Coast piano player.    This year, Evan Toth recorded his new album, The Show, at Richie Cannata’s Cove City Sound Studios on Long Island in Glen Cove. The record features Richie on sax and organ along with Russell Javors on guitar, Liberty Devitto on drums, and current Lords bass player Malcolm Gold.    This marks the first time since 1981’s Songs In The Attic that Richie, Russell, and Lib have all been on the same album. So, we sat down with Evan to discuss his music and his experience recording with the Lords of 52nd Street.    So before we dig deep into Billy Joel’s award show appearances, nominations, performances and awards from 1978 through 2013, we’ll find out more about what it was like getting the band back together.   Evan Toth: https://www.evantoth.com   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod    Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor

Richie Cannata shares his journey from playing Sax, keys and percussion with Billy Joel, The Beach Boys and more to overcoming cancer and coming back better than before!! Amazing conversation unpacking true miracles! When you first hear “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel, a few things stick out in your mind; the fantastic songwriting and musicianship, and THAT solo. The solo that many people can remember note for note that has become part of us. When Richie recorded and performed that solo in 1976 on The “Turnstiles” record, little did he know what that song and that solo would go on to represent for the biggest city in the world.. Richie wrote that solo as a New Yorker, as a Long Islander, and he and his sound is forever ingrained in us. It was the beginning of him playing all those great memorable sax solos on Billy's records, which has added up to being on over 150 million records sold….. Richie was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Ernest and Anna. At the ripe old age of four, he had an attraction to the piano, then at eight, he laid his eyes on his future musical, life long companion, the tenor sax. With incredibly supportive parents, Richie blossomed as a musician, especially after the family moved to Garden City South, Long Island. He played in school bands and in bands with his friends. Wetting his lips and perfecting his trade on the local club scene, Richie began doing studio sessions with a variety of musicians. Until that fateful day in 1975, when Richie was in the studio doing some session work, and the engineer, Al Stegmeyer, recognizing his incredible sound and talent, suggested Richie call his brother Doug. Doug had recently gotten the gig as Billy Joel's bass player, and they were looking for a sax player that also played keys and sang. Richie was that multi-talented musician Billy was looking for. Richie quickly gelled with Billy and the guys, and joined them on the “Turnstiles,” where he would play that amazing solo on New York State of Mind. Billy knew he had something special. Richie would continue to tour throughout the world and perform on albums for many years to come. Performing on multiplatinum records such as “The Stranger,” “52nd Street,” “Glass Houses,” “Songs in The Attic” and even I having musical residuals on “The Nylon Curtain.” It was then that Richie felt it was time to start a family and expand his horizons, performing with different and varied musicians. He went on to become a member of The Beach Boys, playing on their recordings and their successful world tours. He would also go on to perform with Elton John, Celine Dion, Tommy Shaw, Phoebe Snow, Roseanne Cash, Rita Coolidge, Charlie Danials, Vince Gill, and many more. Richie then took a chance in 1985, and opened up “Cove City Sound Studios” in Glen Cove. By bringing his unique musical talents to help other musicians, it put Long Island on the map as a “place to be” for recording for already established musicians. Artists such as Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Billy Joel, Jon Bellion. Chef Special and Jenifer Lopez would pass through ”Cove Sound's” doors. Richie would earn many Grammys and an Oscar. He was also a member of John Stamos' band, “Jesse and The Rippers” on the TV show “Full House,” and continues to this day in his latest position as Musical Director for New York Yankee Bernie Willams and his band. Richie has always been a true Long Islander at heart, living and working there. He is proud of his beautiful family, starting with his wife, Shirlene. Their talented son, Eren and his wife, Kristen, and their children, Ceo Prince Cannata and Lux Leoux Cannata. Richie couldn't be more proud to be the head of his family and watch his grandsons grow up. Richie is a Long Islander in his heart and soul, and forever remains grateful for the way living on Long Island has shaped his life. He was recently inducted to The Long Island Music Hall of Fame with his legendary band …The Lords of 52nd Street Learn about Cove City Sound Studios here http://covecitysoundstudios.com/ For your free guided hypnotic mediation goto www.guidedhypnotic.com

Russell Javors  is an American rock guitarist. He is best known as a rhythm guitarist for Billy Joel from 1976 to 1989.At age 15, Javors was performing songs with his childhood friend Liberty DeVitto. He met Doug Stegmeyer in high school and along with Howard Emerson, formed the band Topper.Together they performed the songs that Javors wrote. Topper became noticed by Billy Joel. Joel found he needed a bassist on his Streetlife Serenade tour and invited Stegmeyer to join him. Javors and DeVitto soon followed. With the addition of multi-instrumentalist Richie Cannata, Topper became the Billy Joel Band. Javors played rhythm guitar with Joel from 1976 until 1989.On October 23, 2014, Javors, Cannata, and DeVitto (with Stegmeyer, posthumously) were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, primarily for their work with Joel.Shortly thereafter, Javors, Cannata, and DeVitto officially formed The Lords of 52nd Street band; the band also includes a pianist and lead vocalist, keyboardist, and a guitarist, and plays faithful renditions of the recorded Joel originals.Javors also recorded guitar parts for Karen Carpenter's 1979 self-titled album, which was released in 1996

You don't have to like music, drummers, or Billy Joel, to love Liberty DeVitto. Who the fuck doesn't love music, drummers, and Billy Joel? Liberty is best known as the long time drummer for Billy Joel, which spanned 30 years. In addition to his work with Billy, Liberty's also been an active session and touring musician working with Carly Simon, Phoebe Snow, Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, Rick Wakeman, Bob James, The Beach Boys, and Meat Loaf, to name but a few. A drummer’s drummer… he, along with Sax player Richie Cannata and the rest of the Billy Joel Band, were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Liberty is an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and instruction to children in underserved public schools throughout the USA. Along with Billy Joel Band members, Richie Cannata, and Russell Javors, Liberty formed The Lords of 52nd Street and play their original hits. Additionally, along with Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Byrd, of the Blackhearts, Liberty plays with the NYC Hit Squad and Ricky’s Clean Getaway. More than all that, Liberty's a gas. Funny, great storyteller, devoted father and husband, and fabulous human being, we had a blast and laughed a shitton. Young Rebel Goombas even brought their family members into the studio to sing on “Sing-A-Long.”
