Interview by Angela CroudaceNe Obliviscaris' clean vocalist and violinist Tim Charles sat down with HEAVY to reflect on the band's journey, the legacy of their landmark album Citadel, and what it's like bringing classical violin into extreme metal.Formed in 2003, the Melbourne-based band didn't reach the international stage until their second album, Citadel, released in 2014. “It was our first proper record deal,” Charles explains, “and that made all the difference. Suddenly we were in stores worldwide and able to secure booking agents and festival slots overseas.” The band's debut, Portal of I, was self-released, and though praised by fans, lacked the reach Citadel was able to achieve with the support of Season of Mist.Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Citadel was recently remastered by Mike Lewis, who also helmed the band's latest release, Exul. “We wanted to bring a bit of the Exul touch to Citadel,” Charles said. “It's slightly more open, a bit heavier, and filled with little details that bring new life to the mix.”Tim also shared his excitement about returning to the stage with the epic 23-minute track Painters of the Tempest in its entirety — a feat not attempted in nearly a decade. “It's still one of our best songs. Performing it live again was incredibly satisfying.”Known for weaving violin into every corner of Ne Obliviscaris' sound, Charles discussed how his classical training shaped the band's musical direction. “I was always inspired by guitarists like Jeff Loomis and John Petrucci,” he said, “and I'd think — how can I do that on violin?” With few metal violinists to look up to, Charles essentially invented his own approach, blending classical, jazz, and metal into a seamless force. The band's recent collaboration with Swedish act Imminence, whose own frontman plays violin, shows that the path Charles helped forge is inspiring a new generation. “It's been amazing to see more non-traditional instruments in metal,” he says. “Hopefully, there's more to come.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Wait, isn't it a non metal month? And don't we usually listen to Dream Theater in the Summer? Yes and yes. But how can you say no to a fresh off the presses album from DT?! This week, we listen to the excellent Parasomnia!
SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE, the 2nd beautifully bizarre edition of “the Sunday funny papers of metal”, brought to you by El Sobrante, California's genius weirdo trio, PRIMUS, is the gold standard of the eccentric sound of “boxless” progressive, funk metal overtones filtered through a heroic dose of psychedelic infused absurdity and combined with an ample sized bowl of surreal silliness. With drum beats that are right, smack dab ”in the pocket”, bass lines that defy the laws of music and reality, orchestrated, atonal, guitar noise that's always a tad off, and lyrics covering a vast array of peculiar and unusual topics, ranging from promiscuous cats to reckless race car drivers to weird time signatures to sheer luck, SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE is one of those recordings that every metal head with a well-defined sillier side (and a “sophisticated palette”) must possess. Grab a handful of relaxation and enjoy “a positive Applebee's experience” while also noting that this is our 2nd PRIMUS episode featuring a story about Applebee's (seriously, what are the odds of that happening almost 3 years later!?). Discover the reason McDonald's is diabolical and why it's exactly like something else that's “not even the same ballpark”, understand that it's perfectly okay to have “different tastes” with regard to entertainment shown “in slow motion”, and brace yourself for a first time Steve Harvey impression that morphed into a Katt Williams impression that was followed by an even better, more impressive Katt Williams impression when you JOIN US as we gear up to go snorkeling through the caverns of queso while SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE. Dream Theater fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Parasomnia, the progressive metal icons' latest full-length album, and now that it's here, it's proving to be one of their most compelling releases in years. With the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy and a fresh creative energy flowing through the band, Parasomnia not only marks a reunion but also signals an exciting new chapter in Dream Theater's storied career. On this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, host Scott Penfold sits down with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie for an in-depth conversation about the making of Parasomnia, the themes behind its haunting and immersive sound, and what it was like having Portnoy back behind the kit after nearly a decade and a half. A Return to Familiar Ground with a Fresh Perspective Parasomnia, which arrived on February 7, 2025, via InsideOut Music, is the band's first release with Portnoy since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The album, produced by guitarist John Petrucci and mixed by Andy Sneap, explores eerie and unsettling dream states, weaving together complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and soaring vocals. From the opening moments of In The Arms of Morpheus to the epic closer The Shadow Man Incident, the record is a journey through subconscious fears, sleep paralysis, and the bizarre world of dreams. Tracks like A Broken Man, Dead Asleep, Midnight Messiah, and Bend The Clock further build upon these themes, making for an album that's as cinematic as it is musically intricate. The first single, Night Terror, is a nearly ten-minute thrill ride that perfectly captures the essence of the record's dark undertones. Mike Portnoy's Return and Mike Mangini's Departure Of course, one of the biggest talking points surrounding Parasomnia is Mike Portnoy's return. After a 14-year absence, the founding drummer is back, and his chemistry with the band remains undeniable. But with that, Mike Mangini, who had been an integral part of the band since 2010, stepped away, making for an emotional transition. In this interview, LaBrie gives insight into how the band navigated that change, what it's been like having Portnoy's energy back in the studio, and how it's influencing the band's creative process moving forward. The Future of Dream Theater With Parasomnia now out in the world, what's next for Dream Theater? A massive tour is on the horizon, but beyond that, LaBrie teases what's in store for the band's evolving sound and future projects. Could this be the beginning of a new golden era for the progressive metal legends? Find out all that and more in this exclusive conversation with James LaBrie on The Loaded Radio Podcast. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 547 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - New year, new gear, someone has been imitating Brian, and the scent of John Petrucci The band is back together and they chat about the Christmas break, Blake's jerk boss, and why Brian has been swinging a hammer in anger. Brian received some ire from the internet (shock horror) about an Ai advert and it upset Richard but made Brian happy. A video comparing every current Wampler drive pedal has been put up on YouTube and the guys discuss it.Richard built a guitar over Christmas by taking a Squier donor and it didn't go quite according to plan so he tells us about it in quite a bit of detail. There are some great tips for anyone wanting to build a guitar - namely by doing the opposite of some of the things Richard did. Brian tries to lead Richard into more gear purchases. The guys then look at a response to Behringer about their LM Drum from one of the pioneers of music synthesis. The debate about budget pedals rolls on as Keeley announces some wallet friendly pedals so the guys talk about it before lamenting one of Brian's less successful pedals. Richard has some of John Petrucci's cologne and the guys discuss their signature scents. Brian had a tip off from one of our good friends and he discovered someone has been ripping him off.270 degrees of tabs, Special pyjamas, Hammer talk, Terrible jokes, Codpasting, James Walkenlots, Bert Weedon...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
Dave DiCenso began his career in the late 80s on the metal scene in his hometown of Boston. He later studied at the Drummers Collective in New York and went on to enjoy a successful and varied career touring and recording with Steve Morse, Hiromi, John Petrucci, Duran Duran, Josh Groban, and many others. He is the author of several books including Universal Rhythms for Drumset and his most recent, Fluid Fills and Musical Phrasing, and just celebrated the milestone 30 years of teaching at Berklee. In this episode, Dave talks about: Self identifying as a “backbeat” drummer and that being the common thread in all the music he's played Possible reasons for modern drum recordings sounding “safe” How your limitations can actually benefit you and help you define yourself How his teaching approach has evolved over 30 years at Berklee “Mastering the instrument that plays the instrument” i.e. self-mastery Taking a break from performing in an effort to finally address a physical issue that has dogged him his whole career Here's our Patreon Here's our Youtube Here's our Homepage

Rhett and Zach are joined on this Dipped In Tone by country and bluegrass aficionado Andy Wood. Wood grew up in Knoxville with Appalachian bluegrass musics shaping his view of the world, and even though he's celebrated for his guitar playing, he reveals that he didn't pick up an electric until he was 17.Mandolin was his home turf, where lightning-quick alternate picking was the norm rather than a shredding strategy—there's no “nuclear arms race of chops” in bluegrass, Wood reveals. The real key to playing fast? Simply learning songs. Because of the different approaches, Wood shares how to spot an electric guitar player who started on bluegrass. Wondering where to start with American roots music? Wood has you covered there, too. When he finally got around to guitar, Wood studied the playing of Nashville session weapons like Brent Mason alongside players like John Petrucci. Now, Wood throws an annual four-day retreat for guitar players called the Woodshed Guitar Experience, where you can learn from some of music's greatest modern players.Plus, learn about how Andy catches great electric tones in the studio, and stayed tuned for his new solo record, Charisma, which dropped on August 9.Check out Andy's new album: https://www.andywoodmusic.com/Get 10% off your order at http://stewmac.com/dippedintoneSubscribe, like, and leave us a commentSign up on our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/iaCee5Support us on Patreon for access to our discord server and other perks! https://www.patreon.com/dippedintoneMERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/dipped-in-toneFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/dippedintone Dipped in Tone is:Rhett Shull https://www.rhettshull.com/Zach Broyles / Mythos Pedals https://mythospedals.comPremier Guitar https://www.premierguitar.com/

I recently sat down with Bettina France, lead vocalist of legendary NY metal band Meanstreak. After touring as the opening act for Dream Theater/Liquid Tension Experiment guitarist John Petrucci, the ladies of Meanstreak went back into the studio to record one of the best EPs I have heard all year - the "Blood Moon" EP. Bettina and I discuss the reunion of Meanstreak, the writing and recording of the new EP, and catch up on conversation like two old friends who have not seen each other in decades...even though we had only just met 5 minutes prior to the recording of this interview. This definitely felt more like a conversation than an interview, and I'm grateful to Bettina for being my guest. Thanks to Munsey Ricci of Skateboard Marketing for setting this up. The influential British shredder talks about how he formed his playing style and demonstrates how to rip one of his most iconic leads. To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history. He and Shifty talk through Collen's formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and John Petrucci all played a hand in Collen's high-flying fretwork. How did Collen fit into the '80s arms race of speedy guitar playing? His participation might have had something to do with Thin Lizzy's Gary Moore. Collen's solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren't many tricks to Collen's sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the '80s. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! Derek Adam Shreds the Guitar & Teaches How to Rock Out with Heart & Soul Derek Adam came on to the music scene with his own blend of guitar driven rock and country music. His anthemic songs are full of hooks and heartfelt lyrics that tell the story of his journey. Whether it's an autobiographical tale, guitar driven anthem, drinking song, or Ballard, it's pure Derrek. It all started for him in a small town in Upstate New York, where Derek was surrounded by music at a young age. Guided by his parents' music collection, he developed a deep affection for classic rock and outlaw country. He picked up the guitar at the age of 10 and quickly playing along to all his favorite tracks. He played in local bands throughout high school and gained a reputation as a formidable guitar player. By the time he graduated; it had become clear that music was his career choice. He went on to attend Crane School of Music where he became classically trained on the guitar and learned the fundamentals of writing music. After honing his skills for four years at the university, Derek set his sights on NYC. He moved down to the city and began his climb. He started from the ground up by networking through former college friends and making new acquaintances. Although a writer at heart, his live shows gained a strong following. It wasn't long before he became an in-demand performer on the local scene, building a steadily growing fan base. In the studio, Derek is just as much at home and constantly growing as a musician. He recently had the privilege of working with Grammy winning producer, James “Jimmy T” Meslin of Dream Theater notoriety. This was a milestone as Dream Theater's John Petrucci has always been a strong influence on his guitar playing. Jimmy's influence can be heard on Derek's EP, “Silver Lining” which is laden with guitar driven anthems that show off his rock and roll influences. Most recently, Derek paired up with Kyle Berry, Luke Bryan's former guitar player, to work on new material. Their sessions at Red Panda Recording and with Richie Cannata from Cove City Studios lead to a return to roots for Derek that produced his recently released single, “The Road I Know”. Although it's early in his career, he constantly talks about the good fortune that has fallen upon him. Derek has his feet firmly on the ground while reaching for the stars. “I'm nothing without the love and support of my friends, fans and loved ones. For this, I am forever grateful. With them at my back, there's nowhere to go but upward.”

This week, we're joined by John Myung, a bass player whose high-school friendship with one John Petrucci would lead to the formation of one of the most successful and long-running prog metal bands of all time—Dream Theater. Speaking with host Josh Paul, John tells us all about the band's origins at the Berklee College of Music, his discovery of the 6-string bass, how he constructs his bass lines to fit into the group's intricate symphonies, and more.
https://linktr.ee/AristocratsBand Website: the-aristocrats-band.com Facebook: facebook.com/aristocratsband Twitter: twitter.com/acratsband YouTube: youtube.com/user/aristocratsbandboing Instagram: instagram.com/thearistocratsband/ Bryan Beller has maintained a multi-faceted career as a bassist, composer, solo artist and clinician for over 25 years, earning his reputation as a uniquely talented yet supremely tasteful team player for instrumentally-minded artists. He's been Joe Satriani's touring bassist since 2013, and also tracked Satriani's complete 2022 album The Elephants Of Mars. He was Steve Vai's choice for the 2009 live CD/DVD Where The Wild Things Are, and he also toured and recorded in the “band” Dethklok, a tongue-in-cheek extreme metal band borne of the hit Cartoon Network “Adult Swim” show Metalocalypse. He's been a musical partner of freak/genius guitarist Mike Keneally for over 20 years and 10 albums. On his own Bryan's 2019 solo release – the progressive concept double album Scenes From The Flood featuring Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Guthrie Govan, Mike Keneally, and many more – was hailed by multiple outlets as an instant classic. In the power super-trio The Aristocrats (with uber-players Guthrie Govan on guitar and Marco Minnemann on drums) he's a part of one of the hottest acts in rock/fusion today; their 2019 release You Know What…? debuted at #2 on the Billboard Jazz Chart.
Really great chat with Dane. We discuss Galactic Cowboys and the connection with Kings X. Dane discusses a life changing moment with Dream Theater's John Petrucci. Their label, pushing them hard and what happened. Also, Nirvana not only killed glam rock, but didn't do Galactic any favors with their success. We discuss the band being in the movie Airheads and he has a great Adam Sandler story. Leaving the band, what he did in between then and coming back to record the latest album. What's next for the band, we shall see. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

One of the nicest humans on the planet took some time to talk with me ...he just so happens to play a mean shred lick or two. Some day I hope he gets the recognition he deserves ...him and his band are hard working ...they just might make something of themselves ...only time will tell
