The original 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl's “The Witches” is the stuff of childhood trauma, but for us adult actressexuals, it's 90 minutes of queen, icon and star Anjelica Huston at her grand dame greatest, plus nuanced Jim Henson puppets, Mr. Bean, Brenda losing her Blethyns, Mai Zetterling's truly great grandma, and bowls of delicious cress soup, preferably with bread. We discuss the scariest witch in the movie, our feelings on the remake, the perils of pairing fruit and chocolate, and our qualms with the ending (despite the wacky final line and the mere presence of Jane Horrocks in a Mercedes coupe!). Everyone shows up to scrutinize the 2020 version of Roald Dahl's The Witches. Originally recorded 10/16/2021.
We're back for another Banned Book discussion about Roald Dahl's The Witches (1963) which we've partnered with Nicolas Roeg's 1990 adaptation, as well as tangential conversation about Robert Zemeckis' 2020 film. Thanks to listener Miriam for contributing!Yes, this book was banned...for promoting witchcraft, not Dahl's anti-semitism, which we have to discuss . It's such a shame because the book - with its willingness to put children in danger and its "grim dark" ending - is still great (bonus points for Quentin Blake's illustrations). Then the film is all about Anjelica Houston's Grand High Witch, cute Jim Henson mice, Roeg's POV camerawork and great practical FX.Wanna connect with the show? Get ready for some somewhat family friendly horror! In this episode we watched the 1999 Sleepy Hollow, featuring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci and the original 1990 version of the film adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Witches. Spoilers start around 5:50.
In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guests Jim Bevan and James "Jaimetud" Sullivan discuss about the 2020 film Roald Dahl's The Witches, which is based on the 1982 book The Witches written by Robert Zemekis, Guillermo del Toro, and Kenya Barris and directed by Zemekis. It stars Jahzir Kadeem Bruno, Octavia Spencer, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Codie-Lei Eastick, Kristen Chenoweth, and Chris Rock. The film takes place in Demopolis, Alabama in 1968 where a young boy had lost his parents in a car accident and is sent to live with his grandmother. A witch approaches him at the local corner store and they relocate at a grand hotel to hide from them not knowing that a witch convention is being held there. The boy turns into a mouse and meets with a boy named Bruno who also got turned into a mouse and the boy's pet mouse named Mary who went through a similar fate. It's up to them to stop the witches from turning all the children into mice. Can they defeat them? Will they be able to turn back into human? The movie was originally suppose to air in theaters, but due to COVID-19, it was released on HBO Max. It's currently the lowest graded Roald Dahl adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes at 49% with critics stating that the film was nowhere near as frightening or engaging compared to the 1990 version. How do they feel about it? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Streaming News Twitch streamers outraged over new unban request feature From rude messages in chat to pesky spam, bans are there as a safety measure to counter it all. Once banned, there was no way for these accounts to annoy or harass streamers moving forward. That was up until today, at least. Twitch revealed a new widget on Sep. 30 that allows mods to go through ‘unban requests.' While it could prove useful for the odd occasion where an account is wrongfully banned, the announcement mainly went down like a ton of bricks. “Channel banned users can submit an appeal through the Chat column,” the Twitch Support post explained. Through this appeal, moderators can then “review and take action.” This gives pesky accounts a second chance at doing the right thing, but it also sets the stage for even more bother. Dainty- Many are saying this will lead to further harassment by trolls. What are your thoughts on this new tool? Twitch Streamer Has Been Live For Over 1,000 Hours Straight While a lot of news regarding Twitch in 2020 is usually related to a new ban, things are changing up with a Twitch streamer getting a new record for the site. Twitch streamer GPHustla currently has the record for the longest continuous stream on the site. GPHustla's stream is currently clocked at over 1000 hours with the time still ticking up, as the stream is still ongoing as of September 28, 2020. The stream initially began as a 24-hour marathon stream, but it ended up going beyond original plans. The stream originally began back in August, making it well over a month since GPHustla's life has been out for the world to see. If GPHustla were to continue the stream up until his attempt with Guinness World Records, this original stream would clock in at well over 3000 hours. Jac - When will we see a Jacqie 24/7 stream channel? WWE reportedly taking control of all wrestler Twitch accounts We talked a few weeks ago about wwe reportedly telling talent they needed to cease any outside activity using their likeness such as personal appearances or streaming. They have now shifted course by taking direct control of their accounts and only giving performers a cut of whatever profit they bring in. Stump - How much do you think this will pay off for rival promotions as contracts finish up at wwe? Twitch's Soundtrack feature debuts today, and it will let streamers play music while they're live Today, Twitch releases Soundtrack, a new product that allows streamers to play music while they're live — or, at least, that's the simplest way to explain it. If the product works the way Twitch says it does, Soundtrack will be much more than just a way to play rights-cleared music while you're broadcasting. It might change how you think about using music on Twitch entirely. Soundtrack separates the music stream into its own channel and broadcasts it simultaneously but, crucially, separately. That integration allows Twitch to automatically strip the music from the VOD of your live stream — because songs that are cleared for live use aren't necessarily also cleared for use in recordings — and at the same time allows the site to do a lot of cool platform-side things with the music itself. (In a word: it solves the desktop audio problem.) Jac - We all speculated recently about something like this coming from twitch when we talked about Twitch sings shutting down. What do you think of this new service?Gaming News Cyberpunk 2077 developer will force six-day weeks leading up to launch Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has told employees it will require them to work six-day weeks until the game's November launch, breaking a previous promise not to force compulsory overtime to finish the project. Originally announced in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed multiple times already - most recently from April to September, and then to its current 19th November date. "These last six weeks are our final sprint on a project we've all spent much of our lives on. Something we care for deeply. The majority of the team understands that push, especially in light of the fact that we've just sent the game to cert and every day brings us visibly closer to shipping a game we want to be proud of. "This is one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, but everyone is well compensated for every extra hour they put in. And, like in recent years, 10 percent of the annual profit our company generates in 2020 will be split directly among the team." Dainty - They have been working on this much anticipated game a long time. How do you feel about the broken promise here with the compulsory OT? Apex Legends crossplay beta starts with Aftermarket Collection Event Apex Legends crossplay is officially coming on October 6, as part of the new Aftermarket Collection event. The event also adds a new event, and lots of new cosmetic content and challenges. Crossplay was confirmed for a Fall launch earlier in 2020, but this first rollout is technically just a beta, as Respawn tests all the features. Cross-progression isn't available at this time, but Respawn will talk more about this during the Steam launch later this year. The beta will be used to test functionality before a full crossplay launch. Players on all platforms can play with each other, but by default, console players will only play with other console players. “The centerpiece of this mode are Flash Points, massive zones dotted around towns in Kings Canyon. Flash Points are special because they regenerate your health and shields over time to get you healed and ready for combat in a flash ( ba dum-tss ). Learn where these are quickly because healing items do not spawn in this mode – Flashpoints are crucial to helping you stay alive.” Jac - As a seasoned apex player how are you feeling about the new mode and crossplay?Entertainment News Cobra Kai Renewed For Season 4, Season 3 Release Date Set For Early 2021 The Karate Kid sequel TV show Cobra Kai is renewed for season 4 at Netflix as the streaming service sets the season 3 release date. Cobra Kai picks up more than 30 years after The Karate Kid movie, following Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) - the villain in the original film - as he reopens the Cobra Kai dojo. Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) also returns, but the script is flipped, with viewers meant to root for Johnny this time as he's the underdog to the now-successful Daniel. The Cobra Kai TV show also introduced a new generation of karate kids training at the dojo, including Johnny's mentee Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña). Cobra Kai originally launched in 2018 on YouTube Red as one of the streamer's originals, but has since migrated to Netflix. Seasons 1 and 2 debuted on Netflix recently, and it was announced that Cobra Kai would return for season 3. Now it appears Netflix wants even more of Cobra Kai for the streaming service. Netflix announced Cobra Kai has been renewed for season 4, though a release window was not revealed. Further, the Cobra Kai season 3 teaser trailer was unveiled, confirming new episodes will hit Netflix on Jan. 8, 2021. Stump - Why haven't you watched this show yet?! Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Star Rick Moranis Attacked While Walking in New York City While walking in the Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City, Rick Moranis was the victim of an unprovoked attack. Footage of the assault, which took place near Central Park just after 7 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1., has been released by the NYPD, showing an unidentified male striking the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids star in the head with a closed fist and knocking him to the ground. The suspect, seen wearing an "I Love New York" sweatshirt, then fled the scene. The NYPD confirmed they are currently looking for him. However, she finds the town and its residents are not what they seems. In this episode the gang discusses why Wytches can't be compared to Roald Dahl's The Witches; why Sailor can sympathize with America's Greatest Hero; is it possible that the main character was annoying or suffering from anxiety; why one doesn't bring a knife or a gun to an magical tree fight; also how even though Daisy isn't a deer expert, how she determines if a deer is normal or not; the chances that getting into a sorority is similar to becoming a Wytch; and last but not least, the storytelling and art of Wytches--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/graphicnovelexplorersclub/message See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
