In this episode, we link up in Hell's Kitchen and transform into experimental theater critics in order to provide an unbridled review and aesthetic analysis following our patronage of the new Broadway revival of Cabaret, a musical with a captivating history and a surprising relevance to many of our favorite themes and subjects. Just before year's end, James and Imo review Aardman/Netflix's 'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget' (2023), directed by Sam Fell and starring the voice talents of Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Bella Ramsey, Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks, Lynn Ferguson, David Bradley, and Miranda Richardson. Does the twenty-three (!) year wait for a sequel leave the critics feeling sunny-side up or is it rather over-egged? Alongside reflecting on the changes to the voice cast and politics of the movies, the two critics explore whether the original changed their eating habits... They'll be back in 2024 with even more overanalysis!

It's pretty well documented that the beauty industry isn't particularly kind to women, but why are we accepting the capitalist forces that make us feel almost universally crap about ourselves? And where do they even come from? These are questions that writer, academic and broadcaster Emma Dabiri sets out to answer in her new book Disobedient Bodies: Reclaim Your Unruly Beauty. And in this week's podzine she chats to Jen about beauty standards, empowerment and doing beauty better.Meanwhile, Hannah gets to be a hero just for fixing a hoover, as she chats to Fiona Dear, co-director of UK Strategy and Operations at The Restart Project, which aims to help us fix our own stuff and prevent it going to landfill. In Jenny Off The Blocks, we're fighting fit again, and Jen's bigging up Katie Taylor. At the end of the show a listener question from Ian Mout Recommendations: Eamonn: Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent (Hardback) Cavorting naked through the Warwickshire countryside painted green. Acting opposite a child with a pumpkin on his head. These are just a few of the things Dame Judi Dench has done in the name of Shakespeare. For the very first time, Judi opens up about every Shakespearean role she has played throughout her seven-decade career, from Lady Macbeth and Titania to Ophelia and Cleopatra. In a series of intimate conversations with actor & director Brendan O'Hea, she guides us through Shakespeare's plays with incisive clarity, revealing the secrets of her rehearsal process and inviting us to share in her triumphs, disasters, and backstage shenanigans. Interspersed with vignettes on audiences, critics, company spirit and rehearsal room etiquette, she serves up priceless revelations on everything from the craft of speaking in verse to her personal interpretations of some of Shakespeare's most famous scenes, all brightened by her mischievous sense of humour, striking level of honesty and a peppering of hilarious anecdotes, many of which have remained under lock and key until now. Instructive and witty, provocative and inspiring, this is ultimately Judi's love letter to Shakespeare, or rather, The Man Who Pays The Rent. https://www.waterstones.com/book/shakespeare/judi-dench/9780241632178 Stuart: @historyinmemes Daily history lessons. Education through memes! https://twitter.com/historyinmemes Ruth: Robert Carlyle returns to screens for the third instalment of fan favourite political thriller COBRA: Rebellion with Jane Horrocks joining the cast. Prime Minister Sutherland (Carlyle) remains in office at Number 10 alongside Victoria Hamilton (The Crown), who is back as Chief of Staff, Anna Marshall. Jane Horrocks (Bloods, Absolutely Fabulous) also joins the cast, entering the cabinet as Victoria Dalton, a new populist Defence Secretary. In this season, Prime Minister Robert Sutherland faces more challenges than ever before. Just as his popularity plumets in light of a new, controversial police-protest bill, his administration is plunged into chaos when an environmental demonstration ends with grave consequences. As the inquest into the events at the protest gets underway, the Prime Minister and his government begin to realise that all is not as it seems. And with his daughter potentially embroiled with the group behind it all, his interest in the case isn't purely political, adding further turmoil to his already strained homelife. The investigation quickly takes them into the dark underbelly of the nation's power, and the PM starts to doubt whom of his team he can truly trust. The crisis spirals further to encompass not only the urgent threat of environmental destruction but also the malignant corruption of the arms industry, the rise of shadowy corporate security firms and the grim reality of the UK's relationship with a crucial ally. The rebellion will push Robert Sutherland to the edge and force him to question what he's personally willing to sacrifice in order to stay in power. https://www.skygroup.sky/en-gb/article/-the-explosive-third-instalment-of-sky-original-drama-cobra-rebellion-coming-to-sky-max-and-now-on-12-october-
Jane and Esther meet the founders of new honey company Australian Rare, Natalie Bussau and Rick Bains, to talk about their very special honey from Western Australia. Rigorously tested, their honey comes from an area of the world that prides itself on the biodiversity of its surroundings as well as being completely pest free. All this comes at a high cost however that is outside the reach of most people's budgets. But if the wine industry can offer wines at different prices dependent on grape variety and scarcity, some costing thousands of pounds as they reflect their natural surroundings, surely some types of honey can command as high a price? Actor Jane Horrocks joins Krupa Padhy to discuss her new Radio 4 drama about her relationship with the singer-songwriter and actor Ian Dury. Jane had been looking back at her early adulthood, coming across old love letters from Ian and her own diary entries which inspired her to create the drama about their tumultuous one year relationship. We speak to Frances O'Grady, the outgoing General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress who leaves after a decade in the job. She talks to Krupa Padhy about the current wave of industrial action across the public sector, the highs and lows of the job and her plans for the future as she prepares to join the House of Lords as a Labour Party peer. Following ongoing nationwide protests, the Iranian government has intensified its crackdown. Two men have been executed since the beginning of the month, and local human rights activists say at least 328 people have been killed and nearly 15,000 others have been detained, as of last month. One of those arrested at the weekend is Taraneh Alidoosti, one of Iran's best known actresses. Krupa is joined by Saba Zavarei from the BBC Persian Service and Dr Rowena Abdul Razak who teaches international history at the London School of Economics and specialises on Iran. When you hear the phrase 'the French woman' what comes to your mind? Maybe you think of a sexy accent, fashionable clothes, perhaps the word 'chic'? With the return of Netflix's Emily in Paris we wanted to look at the stereotype of the French woman. Do these ideals hold or is it, to borrow a French word, just a cliché? To discuss Krupa is joined by the Director Charlotte Seegers whose film She's French explores these ideas, and also by the UK based French journalist Marie Le Conte.

The original 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl's “The Witches” is the stuff of childhood trauma, but for us adult actressexuals, it's 90 minutes of queen, icon and star Anjelica Huston at her grand dame greatest, plus nuanced Jim Henson puppets, Mr. Bean, Brenda losing her Blethyns, Mai Zetterling's truly great grandma, and bowls of delicious cress soup, preferably with bread. Book Vs. Movie: The Witches Roald Dahl's 1983 Children's Novel Vs. the 1990 Nicolas Roeg Cult Classic FilmThe Margos finish October's month of spooky books and movies with 1983's The Witches by Roald Dahl (a favorite of this podcast!) This is one of his last works before his death in 1990 and is based on his love for his mother, Sofie Dahl. Stephen Roxburgh edited the work, and Quentin Blake's illustrations received great praise at the time though the story was thought to be “misogynistic.” It's now known as a modern classic. The story of an unnamed boy who lives with his Norweigian grandmother after his parents are killed and learns about witches who are ALL female and eat children is---intense. He learns that witches all over the world behave differently and that his being sent to an English school might make him vulnerable to the Grand Vulnerable High Witch of All the World. The story has kids turning into mice, magic potions, wigs, pea soup, and so much more weirdness, and an ending that might be more off-putting than encouraging. Nicolas Roeg directed the 1990 film that was considered a box office disappointment because it had a different ending than the book (happier, which Dahl completely hated and should not be a surprise considering what we knew about him) but is now considered a classic. Between the 1983 novel and 1990--which did we like better? You have to listen to find out!!This episode is sponsored by Kensington Books and A Ghost in Shining Armor, the novel by Therese Beharrie.ROM-COM WITH A TOUCH OF MAGIC: This Cape Town-set rom-com is the second in a duology about two South African sisters who were separated as children when one was adopted and the other went into foster care. After reuniting as adults, they learn they've each developed unique abilities. The previous book focused on the sister who can manifest her dreams. This book revolves around Gemma, who can see and communicate with ghosts. FOR FANS OF: This #OwnVoices romantic comedy is ideal for fans of authors who have found success blending romance, comedy, and more weighty real-world issues, such as Jasmine Guillory, Abby Jimenez, Helen Hoang, & Alisha Rai. Readers who enjoy authors bringing new perspectives to the world of romance, such as Talia Hibbert and Erin Sterling will also be pleased. Once haunted . . . Gemma Daniels has never been quite the “down to earth” woman her adoptive parents raised her to be. She even has a unique gift: she can see ghosts and likes helping them settle their unfinished business. But the hotter-than-hot stranger she impulsively kisses on a bet is not only a phantom; he's determined to help her. And the only way Gemma can explain his presence is to pretend they're a real-life couple. Twice shy . . . Levi Walker lived—and died—to save his sister. Now he's got a second chance at life if he assists Gemma in reuniting with her long-lost sibling . . . and then never sees Gemma again. But as he starts to enjoy her irrepressible personality, he's finding it hard to abide by any rules at all . . . Gemma is thrilled to be getting to know her sister, but it causes a family rift she may be unable to heal. On top of that, she's falling for a ghost with a dilemma. Levi must decide what loyalty—and living—is truly all about. In Alan Cumming's house you'll find some shelves. Well, lots of shelves in fact, and on these shelves are curiosities, rarities, and oddities, that Alan has collected throughout his varied and colourful career. Artefacts if you will from the museum of Alan's life. In each episode of this podcast Alan reaches for one of these items, to tell the story behind it, ruminating on the memories it brings up. However, Alan does not do this alone. His guests range from Cyndi Lauper and a pair of white leather gloves to Geri Halliwell and (lots and lots of) Spice Girls merch, and even Sir Ian McKellen and a hemp dog collar. We've also got Monica Lewinsky and a Creative Coalition Award, Fay Ripley and a Red Carpet Photo, and Jane Horrocks and a polaroid from Second Best. Not all guests will be famous though. Alan's life has taken many a twist and turn, and so there will be guests you don't know yet, but their stories are brilliant. Part of the Acast Creator Network. Launches May 18th. Book Vs Movie: “Cabaret” The Backstory Behind One of the Most Popular Musicals of All Time “Musicals in March” The Margos are adhering to the motto “life is a cabaret!” this week with our deep dive into a musical that is based on a book about Berlin's underground night scene in the 1930s by Christopher Isherwood (Goodbye to Berlin.) From there it became a Broadway play by John van Druten--I Am a Camera in the early 1950s with a movie starring Julie Harris that gives new meaning to the word dull! In the mid-1960s Broadway legends, John Kander and Fred Ebb (Chicago) created the book and music for Cabaret with a book by Joe Masteroff which was set in 1929-1930 Berlin when the Nazis were gaining power and the bon vivant lifestyle was being ostracized. (And Jewish people were basically deemed “illegal” and lost their right to own property or their own businesses.) Sally Bowles is one of the theater's most interesting creations. Based on a friend of Isherwood's, Jean Ross, Sally is a terrible singer who somehow makes a living at the “Kit Kat Club” in Berlin. Perpetually broke, she lives with American writer Cliff Bradshaw. They have something of a romance (in between them both having affairs with men.) When Sally becomes pregnant and Hitler is rising in power--she realizes that the party is over and she needs to flee. Throughout the musical, there are several memorable tunes and (depending on the choreographer) sexy “jazz babies” who backup Sally on stage. The Harold Prince-directed show premiered in November 1966 and swept the Tonys the following year. There have been several revivals on Broadway and on the London stage throughout the years with an array of Sally's including Judi Dench, Michelle Williams, Jane Horrocks, Natasha Richardson, and Emma Stone. The part of the emcee was originally played by Joel Grey as an asexual character with rouged cheeks. Later, Alan Cumming would create a highly sexual version in a production directed by Sam Mendes and still plays the character to this day! In this episode, we will focus on the 1972 film directed by Bob Fosse (with uncredited assistance by Gwen Verdon) and stars Liza Minelli. It is the basis for all of the sexier versions that have been produced since. It would go on to win several Academy Awards including Best Director and Actress. So between the original book/play and the film--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out! In this ep the Margos discuss: The story of Christopher Isherwood and Jean Ross The Broadway play which won a few Tonys and was the basis of the very tepid film adaptation Bob Fosse & Gwen Verdon--how they changed musicals forever The cast: Liza Minelli (Sally Bowles,) Michel York (Brian Roberts,) Helmut Griem (Maxmillian von Huene,) Joel Grey (Emcee,) Fritz Weppe (Fritz Wendel,) Marissa Berenson (Natalia Landauer,) Elisabeth Neumann-Vietel (Fraulin Schneider,) and Helen Vita (Fraulein Mayr.)
