Ready to make the leap from wedges to in-ear monitors? Or finally get the stage mix you’ve always wanted? Dave Hamilton welcomes back monitor engineer Paul Klimson, the man who mixed 32 stereo IEM feeds for Justin Timberlake, for a working musician’s deep dive on monitor world. You’ll learn how to build a default mix from scratch (start yourself at 0dB, your instrument at -5, everything else at -15), why drummers have an easier transition to in-ears than most assume, and how a split snake lets you take care of yourself when the gig demands it. Paul digs into hi-hat pitfalls, drum overheads as stage wash, and why bands who mix themselves on stage make life better for their FOH engineer, too. Then it gets practical. Paul walks you through IEM fittings (pain is always bad, the seal is everything, and yes, drop an AirTag in your case) plus the universal-versus-custom decision, vetting vendor customer service before you buy, and the repair costs nobody talks about until they need to. You’ll get honest talkback etiquette (keep the drama off-stage, give everyone a voice, remember that your monitor engineer is a short-order cook), the post-mortem habit every band should adopt, and a peek at SoulSeed.tv. Wherever you sit on stage, this is the episode that sharpens how you Always Be Performing. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 532 – Monday, May 4th, 2026 May 4th: Dave Brubeck Day Guest co-host: Paul Klimson 00:03:24 Start with headphones in your practice space Start with earplugs 00:05:09 Drums are a dynamic instrument, which may be why drummers have an easy transition to IEMs (usually) 00:08:33 What do you want in your wedge? Brendan listened to the community and heard the pains and issues that AN fittings has caused and offered a solution. He introduced a new and better AN fitting to the community and it took off. Moving from Australia to the US in 2008, Brendan worked for a few companies before deciding to go on his own in 2020 to start Dyme PSI. Now Dyme is working with builders in every aspect of the community from imports to top fuel drag racers. He has even teamed up with CSF, GReddy, Trust and more. It was a true pleasure to sit and talk with Brendan and I enjoyed his dry humor. I love conversations like this. Enjoy! Traveling The Yellow Brick Road of Amputee Life   In this episode, I want to talk about one of the biggest learning curves after limb loss — getting fitted for a prosthesis. Nobody really tells you how challenging this part can be. You think, “Okay, I'll get my prosthetic leg or arm, strap it on, and get back to life.” But if only it were that simple, right? The truth is, it's a process — one that takes time, patience, and a whole lot of communication with your prosthetist. When I first started, I honestly thought it was going to be pretty straightforward. They'd take some measurements, make the socket, I'd try it on, and off I'd go. But wow, did I learn quickly that's not how it works. Every limb is unique. Every body changes — sometimes from morning to night. So that “perfect fit” we all hope for doesn't just happen once and stay that way. It's something that evolves. And that means working with your prosthetist becomes this back-and-forth relationship. There's a lot of give and take involved. They're the experts in design and fit, but you are the expert in how it feels — and that matters just as much. Now, I'll admit — in the beginning, I had my fair share of frustration. When the socket rubbed wrong or my limb was sore, I'd get upset and think, “Why isn't this working?” It was easy to blame the prosthesis or think the prosthetist did something wrong. But with time, I started realizing there was a little user error in there too. Sometimes I wasn't putting it on right. Sometimes I didn't pay attention to small aches that turned into bigger problems. And sometimes… I just didn't know what I didn't know. That's a big part of this journey — learning to take accountability where it's due. Not in a shameful way, but in an empowering way. Once we start owning our part in the process, things really start improving. We ask more questions. We write down what we are feeling. We pay attention to pressure spots and skin changes. And most importantly, we communicate all of that clearly with our prosthetist. Change happens! Teamwork and communication are key!   Because here's the thing — they can't feel what you feel. They can't fix what they don't know about. So, if something doesn't feel right, say it. Speak up. Be honest, even if it feels awkward. That's how you get the best outcome. If you're new to being an amputee, remember this: it's okay to not have it all figured out. You're learning. This whole process — from fitting to comfort to walking confidently again — it's a marathon, not a sprint. You'll get there. Just keep showing up, keep asking questions, and keep working with your prosthetist as a team. Because at the end of the day, this isn't just about a prosthesis fitting right — it's about you finding your rhythm again, your confidence, your life. You are a warrior! It's time to unleash that warrior and gain back your independence. Have a beautiful week ahead, and as always, Be Healthy, Be Happy, Be YOU!!! Much love,

Send us a Text Message. Is the traditional way we categorize hearing loss outdated? Join us in this eye-opening episode of the Hearing Matters podcast, where we welcome Dr. Christina Roup and Dr. Douglas Beck to challenge the status quo. We'll explore why the conventional categories from normal to profound hearing loss might be arbitrary, proposing 15 dBHL as a more accurate upper limit for normal hearing. You'll gain insights into the real struggles faced by those labeled with "mild" hearing loss, particularly in noisy environments, and discover why measuring speech recognition in noise could be a game-changer for assessing hearing capabilities.Understanding a patient's hearing struggles goes beyond mere numbers on a chart. In this episode, we emphasize the importance of including a primary communication partner during audiological evaluations to capture a fuller picture of the patient's daily challenges. We also critique current hearing screening standards, advocating for a lower threshold and considering ambient noise factors. Learn why comprehensive audiometric evaluations are vital for all age groups and why traditional screenings often fall short, leading to low follow-up rates and misinterpretations.Discover the hidden depths of auditory processing with our discussion on extended high-frequency hearing tests, especially crucial for individuals exposed to loud noises like veterans and firefighters. These tests can uncover issues such as speech-in-noise difficulties and tinnitus that standard tests might miss. We delve into treatment strategies for extended high-frequency hearing loss, including the use of FM systems and low gain amplification. Finally, we explore the complexities of fitting hearing aids for those with normal to near-normal hearing thresholds, stressing the need for personalized fittings and the broader implications for maintaining high standards in hearing aid customization. Tune in and rethink what you know about hearing loss and auditory health. While we know all hearing aids amplify sounds to help you hear them, Starkey Genesis AI uses cutting-edge technology designed to help you understand them, too.Using innovative Neuro Sound Technology, Genesis AI mimics how a healthy auditory system hears. This allows the hearing aids to better replicate how the human brain processes sound.Click here to find a hearing care professional near you to try Genesis AI! The Audible Contrast Threshold (ACT™) test is the quickest method to accurately measure a person's ability to hear in noisy environments. Developed by the Interacoustics Research Unit, ACT™ uses a non-linguistic, contrasting stimulus to provide a personalized testing experience. The results offer objective data that directly guides hearing aid fitting by predicting aided speech-in-noise performance. In this session, originally part of the 2024 Future of Hearing Healthcare conference, Dr. Ashley Hughes will explain the research behind the ACT™ test, demonstrate how to perform it, and interpret the results. Additionally, she will discuss how these results can inform hearing aid recommendations and setting adjustments.
