On this week's edition of the podcast we were delighted to be joined by one of Ireland's latest DP World Tour stars, John Murphy. Back home in Kinsale after a whirlwind year, Murphy reflects on a season of firsts, from teeing up on the PGA Tour to earning his European Tour card and his initial impressions of life on the main tour. Murphy details the nerves he felt during that life-changing week at Q-School and also looks back on brilliant experiences at the JP McManus Pro-Am, the Irish Challenge, and even not so brilliant experiences, like doing his best Pierce Purcell impression more recently in Mauritius. He even chats chance encounters with George W Bush and Macklemore. As ever, we hope you enjoy the listen. Don't forget to subscribe and let us know what you think
Want to make more putts? Steal this sports psychology hack I learned after working with a sports psychologist before going to Q-School in 2019. One of the biggest things I wanted to discuss with him was putting, as I knew I had serious room to improve. I remember telling him, “Sometimes I kind of blank on the greens and forget what I'm doing. I lose focus and kind of space out.” His solution was to give my mind a clear breakdown of the putt. He told me from behind the ball, read the putt, analyze the green's slope, and then declare it to your mind. It worked wonders at Q-School and still something I do with every putt to this day. Now, after reading the putt, I give my mind a clear image of how the putt should break. I will say to myself (in my head), Okay, I got ten feet, uphill, right to left. My aim is just outside the right part of the cup. This gives my mind a clear image of what the putt should do and helps clarify the goal. The more specific the description, the better. As Billy Casper said, “Try to think where you want to put the ball, not where you don't want it to go.” To give yourself a clear picture of the putt, you need to use a few green-reading techniques that I'll discuss in the next point. Remember if you struggle to visualize like myself, verbalize the putt to give your mind clarity on the read. Hopefully it leads to making more putts than ever! Other than his otherworldly skill at golf, Joel Dahmen is just like us. A native of Clarkston, Wash. (population 7,229), he likes cold beer and football and, presumably, apple pie. While Tiger Woods's maniacal workouts led to a physique that resembles a martini glass, Dahmen is unbothered by his dad bod. Think of him as the pro next door. In this episode Dahmen speaks candidly about his long road to the PGA Tour and the stress that comes with having to fight for his job. He talks about what he learned moonlighting as a caddie for a friend at Q School, and takes listeners behind the scenes of Max Homa's baby shower. As a member of the Player Advisory Council, Dahmen sheds light on the Tour's boardroom machinations and what Jay Monahan is like behind closed doors. At every turn he is self-deprecating and amusing. Hammad Miah gives an insight into the challenges that players face when they first turn professional, in the new episode of the WST Podcast. World number 71 Miah first gained his tour card in 2013 when, at the age of 19, he came through Q School. "There's a huge misconception about turning pro," he told Michael McMullan. "Our dream is to get on to the tour, but that is only five percent of the journey. I was thinking I could have a very good future ahead of me in snooker. You grow up seeing the big names on TV, then all of a sudden you are playing against them. It all happened too fast, I didn't have time for it to soak in."
In this episode, Ashton Van Horne (@ashtonvanhorne) details through the trials and tribulations of being a professional golfer. Ashton played college golf at Belmont University, where he won 6 times in 4 years. Ashton won his first tournament as a professional, the Kentucky Open. Over the course of the next 5 years, Ashton played mostly mini tours with a few years of Canadian Tour sprinkled in. In the fall of 2021, Ashton finally broke through at second stage of Q-School and earned his Korn Ferry card.
