Welcome to episode 23 of the Lovecars On The Grid podcast! Our hosts Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman are back to bring us another round up of motorsport events from the past week! We've had an interesting weekend from MotoGP, Formula E, Indycar and NASCAR! But we kick off with what is possibly one of the most insane road races in the World! The Isle of Man TT is currently taking place, with average speeds of over 130MPH! In WRC, we had very dusty roads in Sardinia, even after the road sweepers had been through! With 3 minute intervals between cars, it made for a tough rally, with a great weekend for Hyundai and a win for Ott Tanak. Moto GP riders were out in Barcelona, as Fabio Quartararo takes another win and begins to run away with the Championship. Will he win? In Moto2, British rider Jake Dixon qualified in 4th place, with Sam Lowe, our other British rider crashing out and retiring from the race. The win in Moto2 went to Celestino Vietti after a last lap battle with Aron Canet. In Moto3, our highest British finisher was JohnMcPhee in 7th place, but just half a second separated the top 7 riders! The win went to Spanish rider, Izan Guevara. Formula E were racing their electric cars in Jakarta. Mitch Evans took the win in his Jaguar. For the British drivers, Jake Dennis was the highest finisher in 6th place. Over in the US, the IMSA racing cars were in Belle Isle, a really tight race track! Sebastien Bourdais won with Cadillac, with British drivers Ollie Jarvis and Tom Blanc in 2nd place. Staying in Detroit, the Indycar was on Sunday at the same track. With lots of overtaking, the race win went to Will Power, having qualified from 16th, followed closely by Alexander Rossi. NASCAR was an entertaining race once again, with several incidents and yellow flags. Kyle Busch was arguably robbed of the win, following a safety car with 2 laps to go. This bunched the cars up, allowing Joey Logano to overtake and win the race. In other news, Kimi Raikkonen is going to appear in NASCAR in New York in August! BBC Top Gear was back last night also, with some old school USA banger racing. What did you think of the episode? Let us know in the comments! We also had Le Mans test weekend, and GT cars at Paul Ricard Circuit! Next week, we of course have LeMans approaching. F1 returns at Azerbaijan, with F2 supporting. Indycar are at Road America, arguably the best road course on the calendar! World Superbikes are at Lugano.

In this week's CER podcast, senior research fellow Sam Lowe speaks to our research fellow Elisabetta Cornago, who shares her thoughts on what Fit for 55 could mean for EU and international climate action going forward. With most services now available to us at the touch of a button, it's surprising that the hairdressing & beauty industry had not ventured into on-demand tech solutions to reach their customers sooner. However, Sam Lowe, Founder of Barba & Beautey saw the gap in the market and is in the process of building a product that does just that. Aiming to bring these industries into the twenty-first century, Barba & Beautey function for both professionals and customers, allowing mobile services to be booked through an app, taking the waiting game out of the equation. In this episode, Sam talks us through the idea behind Barba & Beautey and the testing process for a product with two user bases. We also discuss the tricky business of valuing a company that hasn't launched, gaining buy-in during the early stages of a start-up and navigating delegation as a founder.
Catalyze invited Nicholas Byrne ’19 of Arts + Crafts back to the series to talk about his latest music projects, and because we thought you might want to learn more about the artist behind the music that’s featured on the show. We first brought Nicholas to Catalyze in October 2020 as the producer, guitarist, and singer was road-tripping across the country with Eric Lee ’18 and Sam Lowe ’20. Nicholas also talked about how AI-powered tools will advance digital music production, how a “shake-up” in the creative landscape of social media platforms could shift dollars back into the hands of content creators, takeaways about manipulating sound and light from Berlin’s music scene, and a new opportunity on the horizon in New York City.More about the musicSam is a graduate student at Stanford University pursuing a master’s degree in computer science with minors in cognitive science and music. Britain's transition period with the EU ended on December 31st. For the first time since the inception of the single market in 1992, British companies were on the outside. A trade agreement was reached meaning that no tariffs would be paid on imports or exports, but it did mean that trade would no longer be entirely friction free. It's still early days, but what do we now know about the extent of that friction and its possible consequences? How representative are the frustrations of Cornwall's daffodil growers who say they can't find labourers or UK companies that are now setting up production facilities in the EU in order to avoid red tape and its cost? To what extent have difficulties been mitigated by new trade deals that the UK is now free to negotiate. And what's the view from the EU?With Peter Foster of the Financial Times; Sam Lowe of the Centre for European Reform; Vandeline von Bredow of The Economist; and Maddy Thimont Jack of the Institute for Government.Producers: Tim Mansel, Sally Abrahams, Kirsteen Knight Editor Jasper Corbett

Outside their Airbnb in Cheyenne, Wyoming, three Morehead-Cains shared about their adventures thus far in road tripping across the country with a U-Haul-turned-mobile-recording-unit. Eric Lee ’18, Nicholas Byrne ’19, and Sam Lowe ’20 had spent the last six months or so with seven other Tar Heels on a historic farm in Colbert, Georgia. The unincorporated community called Smithonia is about 20 minutes outside of Athens. Following Nicholas’s graduation in December 2019, the musician moved to the farm belonging to his grandparents, converted a former commissary into his own production studio, and invited his friends and fellow creatives to stay indefinitely. After collaborating throughout the spring and summer on music and other entrepreneurial and artistic pursuits to make the most of anxiety-ridden times in quarantine, the “Smithonia 10” have since scattered—all but the current trio, that is. Their mission for this trip is to get Eric back to his home base in San Francisco after taking the hiatus off work to recharge in rural Georgia. As a student at Carolina, Eric co-founded a microfinance initiative for entrepreneurs in the Triangle area called Build The Hill. He earned a degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in economics and minors in entrepreneurship and philosophy, politics, and economics. Prior to Covid, the alumnus was working as a business operations analyst in the Bay Area. Eric worked remotely half-way through the summer before deciding to take full advantage of time with friends during extraordinary circumstances. Sam will also be joining the West Coast community of Tar Heels to pursue a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University beginning in January 2021. Now that we've Br-ucked Off, Blighty can look forward to supermarkets chock full of chlorine-drenched poultry. Lucky us (lucky chickens). Why? Because that's how chickens are made in America, goddammit, and Donald Trump smells a finger-lickin' opportunity to sell stinky US chooks to a market newly liberated from Yerp's pesky animal welfare standards.Obviously that's about as far as our understanding of trade goes, so we got someone in to tell us more. Returning guest Sam Lowe (see babble #42), from the Centre for European Reform, joins us to defend his fascination with one of the nerdiest subjects in the world and patiently explain why it's actually quite important.Sustainababble is your friendly environment podcast, out weekly. Buoyed by a big new Conservative majority in Parliament, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson toughened his Brexit stance on Tuesday, ruling out any extension of an end-of-2020 deadline to strike a trade deal with the European Union. As lawmakers assembled for the first sitting of Parliament since Johnson's election victory last week, Downing Street said the government would insert a clause into its Withdrawal Agreement Bill — which ratifies the country's departure from the EU — to rule out extending Britain's trade negotiations with the bloc beyond next year. That could mean Britain leaving without a deal on trade terms at the start of 2021, a prospect that alarms many U.K. businesses. The pound plunged on the news, falling by 1.5% to just over $1.31.Johnson's Conservatives won an 80-strong majority in Parliament in last week's general election — the most decisive Tory victory since the 1980s — as voters in formerly Labour-backing areas rallied to Johnson's promise to "get Brexit done."The majority gives Johnson the ability to overcome opposition to his Brexit plans and implement his legislative agenda — unlike Conservative predecessor Theresa May, who led a minority administration and failed to win lawmakers' backing for her Brexit blueprint."This Parliament is not going to waste the time of the nation in deadlock and division and delay," Johnson told lawmakers as Parliament reconvened after the election. The new session opened with a ritual mix of ceremony and political heckling. The 650 lawmakers were summoned to Parliament's upper chamber, the House of Lords, by an official known as Black Rod to hear a message from Queen Elizabeth II, before returning to the Commons. The 365 Conservative legislators overflowed the benches allotted for them on one side of the Commons chamber. There was more room on the Labour Party side; the opposition party has 203 seats.Once all lawmakers — including 140 new arrivals — have been sworn in, the real business will get underway Thursday, when the government announces it legislative plans for the next year in a speech delivered by the queen. The Brexit bill is due to get its first vote in the House of Commons on Friday. The divorce bill will see the U.K. leave the 28-nation bloc on Jan. 31 and enter a transition period until the end of 2020 while a new trade deal with the EU is being negotiated. During the transition period, Britain will effectively remain a member of the EU, though without voting rights. The withdrawal agreement allows for the transition to be extended until the end of 2022. Johnson has said repeatedly he won't use the extra time, although trade experts say striking a new deal in only 11 months will be challenging.Inserting a legal clause into domestic law ruling out a trade extension would underscore Johnson's commitment to leave the EU in full by the end of next year, though it wouldn't prevent his government from changing its mind later.Opposition politicians said the move would cause more uncertainty for businesses, who are still unsure what Britain's trade relationship with the EU will be, three-and-a-half years after the U.K. voted to leave the bloc."This Tory government's reckless approach to Brexit will send the country straight off the no-deal cliff," acting Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said.European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said that reaching a comprehensive agreement in such a short time would be "very problematic.""We'll need now to see what exactly can be achieved during that time period," he told reporters at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. "This indeed provides for a very rigid time frame, which reflects that certain things will be out of reach."Johnson's move was as much about sending a message to Brexit-backing voters in the U.K. as it was about standing firm with the EU.Sam Lowe of the Center for European Reform think tank said Johnson likely believed that a "firm deadline" would help speed up trade...

The single market. The customs union. Making a deal with the EU or leaving on WTO terms. There’s a lot of jargon to contend with when we’re discussing the economics of Brexit. Sometimes it feels like we get so caught up in pretending we know what it all means that we forget to talk about the impact it’s going to have on people’s everyday lives. When we leave the EU, will some people lose their jobs? Will the things we buy become more expensive? Will businesses do better or worse under new trading rules? This week, Ayeisha Thomas-Smith is joined by Annie Quick, Subject Lead for Inequality at the New Economics Foundation and Sam Lowe, who leads on trade and Brexit at Friends of the Earth. — Enjoying the show?
