1. Religious Liberty Commission A commission formed in 2025 to evaluate threats to religious freedom. It conducted hearings and gathered testimony from over 100 witnesses. Its final report was delivered to President Trump, outlining proposed reforms. 2. Healthcare Sector Implications The report recommends expanded protections for healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc.) who object to certain medical procedures on religious or moral grounds. Proposed actions include: Strengthening enforcement of federal “conscience laws” Supporting specific legislation (e.g., Conscience Protection Act) Increasing investigation and legal defense of religious rights The debate: Supporters: Say workers should not have to choose between their beliefs and careers. Critics: Argue this could limit patient access to services. 3. Military Implications Focuses on service members who refused COVID-19 vaccines for religious reasons. Many were denied exemptions and suffered consequences (e.g., dismissal, lost benefits). Recommends: Improving the process for religious accommodations Offering stronger protections for service members’ beliefs 4. COVID-19 Vaccine Context The pandemic is a key example of government overreach. Religious exemption requests were often denied Individuals were forced to choose between compliance and employment However, the commission does not call for banning vaccine mandates, but rather for more meaningful accommodation processes. 5. Policy and Legal Proposals “Know Your Rights” campaigns Hotlines and reporting systems for violations Honors/awards for defending religious liberty These proposals could be implemented through: Executive action Congressional legislation Legal challenges Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Happy Pride Month! Ep 253 “The Hotlines for Insecurity” – National Gun Violence Awareness Month (Bullet Poof Bulletins) Celebrating the launch of eco-fiction anti-gun novella Bullet Poof and National Gun Violence Awareness Month, Avis Kalfsbeek brings back beloved Kitty O'Compost with the Bullet Poof Bulletins. Tonight on the Spoke-Easy stage, Kitty O'Compost breaks down a leaked corporate white paper that exposes the predatory monetization of human loneliness. This bulletin satirizes an industry hotline designed to exploit consumer isolation, showing how marketing departments weaponize emotional vulnerability to drive automated firearm sales. Inspired by the connective themes of Bullet Poof, this episode dismantles the commercialization of insecurity and points us back to the real, healing power of genuine, face-to-face community connection. Resources: Bullet Poof is a hopeful eco-fiction novella about what happens when ordinary people refuse to accept the gun status quo.

That Don't Sound Right is all about conversation—the way we did it before the internet, when you couldn't instantly prove anything and the “facts” came from whoever was in the room. In this episode, Peter and Cecil take a nostalgic trip back to the surprisingly busy world of phone hotlines—the analog lifelines that once kept us informed, entertained, and occasionally confused. From dialing in for school lunch menus and time-and-temperature recordings to movie listings, snow-day closings, traffic reports, and even joke-of-the-day numbers, these simple calls shaped daily life in ways that feel almost unbelievable now. They also revisit the quirks of the era: psychic hotlines, horoscope recordings, fan-club mailings, and the unforgettable ritual of waiting in long lines for concert tickets—no apps, no refresh button, just commitment and maybe a folding chair. It's a warm, funny look at how we stayed connected before everything went digital—and a reminder that sometimes, the old ways of figuring things out might've been a little more fun. So listen in, laugh along, and if it sparks a memory that makes you think, that don't sound right… send it their way. Mickey Osterreicher of NPPA Discusses Photojournalism in the Modern Era: Legal Rights, AI Challenges, and How to Protect Your Work The 10 Frames Per Second podcast episode featuring Mickey Osterreicher, General Counsel for the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), uncovers the toughest challenges facing today's visual journalists: Shrinking newsrooms & the rise of freelancers Legal battles over copyright, AI‑generated images, and fair use Police confrontations, arrests, and deportations of journalists The vital role of the NPPA in advocacy and education If you're a photojournalist, visual storyteller, or anyone who relies on images to inform the public, the insights from this episode are essential reading. A past guest on 10FPS (Episode 20) Mickey's career arc illustrates how photojournalism and law intersect: Phase Highlights Early Years Started with a 35 mm camera in college, photo‑edited the school newspaper, then worked for the Buffalo Courier‑Express (10 years). TV Transition Moved to WKBW‑TV, covered sports, and realized visual storytelling mattered more than column space. Law School Inspired by covering the Attica prison uprising and escorting attorneys William Kunstler & Ramsey Clark, he enrolled in law school while still working nights at the TV station. NPPA Legal Counsel Joined the NPPA in the early 1970s, later became its volunteer legal counsel, handling copyright, First Amendment, and police‑training issues. Key takeaway: A solid legal background can turn a photojournalist into an advocate for the entire visual‑journalism community. The State of the NPPA Why the NPPA Is Still Critical Founded 1946 – the “voice of visual journalists.” Membership shift: From staff photographers at newspapers/TV to freelancers & independent contractors. Financial pressure: Dues are modest, but staff salaries have been cut; board members now perform many staff functions pro‑bono. Advocacy priorities: Protect First Amendment rights. Provide legal training for journalists and law‑enforcement agencies. Fight AI‑related copyright infringement. NPPA's Current Initiatives Legal hotline – direct access to counsel for members. First‑Amendment training – delivered to police departments nationwide (e.g., Minnesota, Chicago). Copyright small‑claims court – a low‑cost venue for photographers to enforce their rights. Writing with Light (WwL) Coalition – developing standards for image provenance and authenticity. First Amendment & Police Encounters: What Every Visual Journalist Should Know 1. Know Your Rights Public spaces: You have the right to photograph and record, subject only to reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions. “Indicia” of journalist status: Press credentials, professional gear, and a clear “press” identifier help officers recognize you as a journalist. 2. Prepare Before You Go Contact local police ahead of time to introduce yourself. Work in pairs or a small team—the “buddy system” improves safety and documentation. Carry a written list of emergency contacts (phone numbers inked on your arm or stored offline). 3. If You're Detained Step Action Stay calm Do not resist; comply with lawful orders. Identify yourself Show press credentials, explain you're exercising First Amendment rights. Document the encounter Keep an audio/video record if safe to do so. Call the NP hotline (or the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press at 800‑336‑4243) as soon as possible. Notify a trusted contact (family, lawyer, editor). Ask for a copy of the arrest report and any charges filed. AI & Generative Images: The New Copyright Battlefield Why AI Threatens Photojournalism AI‑generated images can be indistinguishable from reality (e.g., deepfakes, synthetic disasters). Massive ingestion of photographers' work to train AI models, often without permission or compensation. Legal Landscape (U.S. Focus) Copyright registration is required before you can sue for infringement. Statutory damages: Up to $150,000 per image for willful infringement (as illustrated by the Daniel Morrel case). Fair‑use defense is fact‑intensive; courts evaluate purpose, nature, amount used, and market effect. Practical AI Safeguards Register every image you intend to license (or that has high news value). Add a visible watermark or embed metadata indicating ownership. Use tools from Adobe's Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) to embed provenance data. Monitor platforms for unauthorized use; send a cease‑and‑desist using NPPA's model letters (available on their website). Practical Steps to Safeguard Your Images {#practical-steps-to-safeguard-your-images} Register Your Work File a registration with the U.S. Copyright Office within 90 days of first publication to get retroactive protection. Maintain a Documentation Log Date, location, equipment, and a brief description for each shoot. Store original RAW files in an offline, encrypted backup. Use Model Release & License Agreements Clearly outline permitted uses, fee structures, and attribution requirements. Leverage NPPA Resources Model cease‑and‑desist letters – copy, personalize, and send. Small‑claims court filing kit – for disputes under $10 k, no attorney needed. Educate Your Audience Publish a short note on your site about image authenticity (e.g., “This photo was captured on location with a Sony A7R IV; not AI‑generated”). We close things out with a listener voicemail that's got us thinking about those old school hotlines from the 90s and whether or not anyone is using grocery store fliers in 2025.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comLeave Us a Voicemail and tell us what you don't get! Holding The Line: Fighting Wildfires

The Modern Mann

California wildfires ripped through L.A. this year, killing 29 people, destroying more than 18,000 buildings, and putting wildland fires back into the headlines. But what's it like being one of the poorly-paid workers sent in to risk your life to fight the flames?  Wildland firefighter Nathan Bell has ‘held the line' across the United States: in Elk City, Idaho; on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Utah; and in the desert conditions of Sedona, Arizona. For 16 hour workdays, for weeks away from home, he will hike up a mountainside towards a raging fire with a 40 pound backpack on his shoulders, and a chainsaw over his shoulder. And his starting salary is less than a worker at Burger King... In conversation with Olly, he exposes the back-breaking, exhilarating life of a wildland firefighter - and the unspoken trauma so many of his peers experience ‘between seasons'... _______ Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart investigates the trend for A.I. makeovers.  From LolaAI, the ‘stylist and shopping copilot' baked in to Open Wardrobe, to the at-home body scans offered by Bodymapp, can Ollie get himself a fresh Spring look - using only A.I? As ever, frankly, the results are mixed… _______ Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox pops into Kiiroo to see how their teledildonics have adapted to the world of OnlyFans - and answers a listener question from a new Mum struggling with sex after breastfeeding.  Once a source of pleasure, her boobs now feel sore, sensitive, and more like functional tools than instruments of intimacy. Will they ever feel sexy again? With the help of breastfeeding peer support worker Emilie Wardle, Frome Birth Talk's Lucy Plummer and sex and relationship therapist Rhian Kivits, Alix explores considers the under-discussed issues of milk mishaps in the bedroom and babies getting a little too handsy; and proposes new erogenous zones for when ‘boobs are off the table'... _______ Music this month comes from Manchester indie band The Lottery Winners, and their infectious single, ‘Turn Around'. It's our Record of the Month, and it's out now. _______ SUPPORT US - every penny counts: THANK YOU SO MUCH for your generous donations - independent shows like ours only exist with your support:
