Kiwis seem to be getting lonelier. Recent research from Age Concern revealed the extent of the loneliness and social isolation felt amongst older New Zealanders – with 59% of respondents feeling lonely or isolated recently, and a third feeling like this most of the time. Main points: It's rated as having a similar impact on our health as smoking and obesity Multiple causes for loneliness including the impact of pandemic, the ageing population, rising cost of living, increasing health concerns and unaffordability, and the trend for families to move overseas In the UK and Japan, they have established ministers for loneliness within the government to focus on this area – in NSW they launched a parliamentary inquiry into loneliness earlier in the year What can help? Addressing underlying causes Community-based initiatives such as groups, volunteer programmes, Interestingly social media doesn't help – 75% of those with social media access reported loneliness and were more likely to report than those without social media, which emphasises the importance of face-to-face connection What can we do? Make it your Christmas gift to someone —look around in your family and neighbourhood— loneliness is silent so unlikely people will reach out for help, you need to reach in. If you can't do it in person (e.g., because living in another part of the country) can you get someone else to connect with your older relatives while you do the same in your neighbourhood? It promises a world where avatars navigate immersive environments, unshackled by physical limitations. Tech giants like Facebook and Roblox have seized on this vision, racing to construct interconnected realms that merge augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and tangible human experiences. Yet, beneath this glossy promise of innovation lies a more unsettling reality. As the metaverse expands, it invites scrutiny over its potential to erode authentic human connections, amplify privacy risks, and upend societal norms. Living simultaneously in virtual and physical worlds demands more than adaptation; it forces us to confront the profound implications for mental well-being and the very fabric of social interaction. Data Collection and Surveillance Risks The metaverse's expansive virtual landscapes require extensive data collection to function smoothly and deliver personalized experiences. It includes tracking users' behaviors, interactions, and preferences to tailor the digital environment and enhance engagement. However, the volume of data gathered poses significant privacy risks, as it could be exploited or mishandled, leading to potential misuse or unauthorized access. Biometric data, such as facial recognition and physiological metrics, are increasingly integrated into the metaverse to create more immersive and interactive experiences. This immersion can lead to compulsive behavior, where the metaverse becomes a primary focus of an individual's life, overshadowing physical and social needs. This shift can result in strained relationships and neglect of personal duties, as the allure of the metaverse often offers an escape from real-world challenges and responsibilities. The psychological effects of prolonged virtual engagement are profound. Users may experience increased isolation as their real-world social interactions diminish. Additionally, virtual environments' constant stimulation and gratification can lead to decreased attention spans and difficulty managing real-world tasks. This imbalance can contribute to mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, as individuals struggle to reconcile their virtual and physical lives. Managing testicular cancer demands resilience that men often don't realize they possess. Michael J. Dr. Holloway discusses his work on social isolation, loneliness, and health equity, highlighting the importance of understanding individual stories and promoting connection in healthcare settings.
Last year's declaration by the U.S Surgeon General that loneliness and isolation are a public health crisis was based on research showing that they have a negative impact on mental health, blood pressure, cognitive performance and, most relevant to our discussion today on Raise the Line, immune system function. That's why it's important for people dealing with chronic illnesses to stay socially connected at whatever level they are capable of, says our guest Dr. Rose Perry, a neuroscientist and executive director of an applied research non-profit called Social Creatures. “When your symptoms aren't good, being isolated can be like throwing gasoline on the fire. I don't think lack of social connection is a cause of chronic illness, it's really about setting conditions that make healing maximally possible,” she says. At Social Creatures, Dr. Perry and her team create programs designed to help populations at risk for social isolation feel like they are connected and supported. As she explains to host Raven Baxter of the Cohen Center for Recovery from Complex Chronic Illnesses at Mount Sinai, providers should be aware of programs like hers and affinity groups (e.g. knitting clubs) in their locality and engage in “social prescribing” as part of a treatment plan. “A lot of doctors will develop a resource list so they can pull it up and then kind of matchmake their patient with an organization.” Don't miss this final episode in our special series on Post-Acute Infection Syndromes where you'll hear about practical strategies providers can use to help address an often overlooked factor in someone's ability to be as healthy as possible.
