Welcome to Proper Mental episode 98 with Sarah Callaghan, who is an award-winning comedian, spoken word artist and writer. Sarah has been performing stand up for over a decade and has gigged all over the world. She is also a respected spoken word artist, performing solo and with a band. Sarah's poetry is informed by personal experience and her work discusses childhood trauma, heart break and other aspects of everyday life. Sarah and I caught up to chat about her own experiences with mental health and how it inspires her creative process. We chat about living authentically and choosing your own path, the differences between writing comedy and poetry, and we chat about spirituality, self-belief and the challenges of living a creative life. As you'll hear in our conversation, we touch on a few different topics but what I love is that we really just spoke as we might have in person. Without any masks. This is 343 with Sarah Callaghan. The terms hard-working and “jack of all trades” get thrown around a lot, but Sarah Callaghan really embodies the two. She's been a comedian for over ten years with shows across the world from Australia to Austria, and she made the move into poetry when she used it as a tool to work through a difficult period of her life. Poetry was a space that allowed for what comedy didn't; a space where messages didn't necessarily have to be funny to be let out and to be seriously received by an audience. It gave her a space to speak more openly about mental health. We also discuss the importance of creative collaboration, share some performance stories, and the difficulties of navigating the trappings of social media. “You're never gonna achieve greatness in your comfort zone.” - 10:20-11:26 Sarah reads two poems - 23:35 - Beginning 33:21 - It's Not That Deep Download a full transcript here: (COMING SOON) For more from Sarah: http://www.sarahcallaghan.com/ https://linktr.ee/sarahcallaghan https://twitter.com/sarahecallaghan http://instagram.com/scallaghan1 For more from PJ: linktr.ee/repeatbeatpoet https://twitter.com/repeatbeatpoet https://www.instagram.com/repeatbeatpoet/ For more from us: lunarpoetrypodcasts.com www.facebook.com/LunarPoetryPodcasts www.twitter.com/LunarPoetryPod Buy the 'Why Poetry?': The Lunar Poetry Podcasts Anthology here: vervepoetrypress.com/product/why-poetry/ Episode music is an original composition by Snazzy Rat. Today’s episode of DWSC welcomes comedian and poet Sarah Callaghan to the force, who brought with her a tale of criminal woe which was triggering for The Drunk Women, as it would appear that old people aren’t always as sweet as they may appear. Our super-sleuths then learn about a particularly strange trend in law enforcement which causes Catie to reach the top tier of incredulity and quite rightly so!This week’s listener crime is a cautionary tale which many people during lockdown would have unfortunately been victim to. In this conversation I talk with poet and comedian Sarah Callaghan (@scallaghan1). Sarah is a super inspiring person, she talks about how she shifted her mindset to become a more positive person, how important it is to go out and enjoy your life and try new experiences rather than sitting in front of a laptop forcing the inspiration to hit. She talks about how attending meditation and sound healing classes helped her overcome depression and heartbreak, which ultimately led her to performing poetry for the first time. We discuss her love for poetry and why it offers a different creative outlet to performing stand up comedy. Sarah also breakdowns her writing process and explains how having a more relaxed approach to her art and life in general has been a game changer, she goes on to explain why collaboration is key, there's loads here! Whether you're a comedian, poet or not, this is an inspiring conversation about Sarah's journey to push herself as an artist.Happy listening :)Steve - @offkeysteve See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
