Screenwriting Legends SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI discuss their origin stories of being film nerds, drive-in movies, how looking on the back of Variety was glorious when they were kids, how Shakey's Pizza's silent movies influenced them, meeting the first hour at school and deciding to go to the Nuart Theater in Los Angeles, why they program screenings including The Wrong Guy, what makes a good story from real life, why offbeat losers make better subjects than heroes, how directors like Tim Burton are loyal to the script and love stories of art and outsiders, why awards are fun but stupid, their process of deciding on ideas in a shockingly random way, sinking time into ideas that go nowhere, the amazing Marx Brothers movie that can't seem to get made, how they can't shake a movie once they love it, how producers are just as stupid as they are, whether everyone has a movie in their lives and why someone doesn't make a bio movie about them, and how pickleball can save your life! Bio:SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI met when they were freshman roommates at USC's School of Cinema. On a whim, they wrote a screenplay during their senior year, which sold a week after graduation. They are best known for writing very unusual biopics with larger-than-life characters. They wrote the highly-acclaimed ED WOOD, for which they were nominated for Best Screenplay by the Writers Guild. They followed this with THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, for which they won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, as well as a special Writers Guild award for civil rights and liberties. They scripted the extremely postmodern MAN ON THE MOON, the life story of Andy Kaufman. They wrote BIG EYES, the strange-but-true story of Margaret and Walter Keane, for which they received an Indie Spirit Best Screenplay nomination. For their first television project, they created the hit miniseries AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON, for which they won the Emmy, Golden Globe, PGA and WGA Award for Best Limited Series. Their most recent film, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, is the celebrated tale of Rudy Ray Moore. Other than biopics, Alexander and Karaszewski are quite eclectic. They wrote the hit Stephen King adaptation 1408. They produced the Bob Crane biopic AUTO FOCUS, and they wrote and directed the comedy SCREWED. They have also written numerous family films, including PROBLEM CHILD, PROBLEM CHILD 2, AGENT CODY BANKS, and GOOSEBUMPS. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Primary elections happened across the country, but some outcomes won't be known for over a week, as California says it will take 10 days for some vote counts to be finalized. How did we put a man on the moon, but a state can't count votes in a day with today's technology? Glenn, Jason, and Rikki discuss some of the outcomes we do know from yesterday, including the possible election of New Jersey House candidate Adam Hamawy (D), whose past puts a security clearance in question. Glenn plays some disturbing footage of Paul Krugman claiming society needs to thoroughly “purge” Trump supporters. Glenn warns of a very dark future if Americans choose this path. Glenn breaks down a recent article on his website, “The Russian Influence Operations Targeting Candace Owens and You,” which exposes the Russian influence that continues to happen to Americans. Glenn warns of the ideological operation that is infiltrating the political Right, disguising itself as patriotism and faith. Glenn discusses the horrific story of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old Englishman who was stabbed and died while in police custody. Glenn rants against tourists who visit Yellowstone National Park and treat wild bison as selfie props. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jim Carrey gives one of the most intense and transformative performances of his career in Man on the Moon, but the real question is… was Andy Kaufman a genius or completely unhinged? In this review, we break down the film, Carrey's commitment to the role, and how it blurs the line between performance and reality. Kaufman wasn't just telling jokes, he was creating experiences, confusing audiences, and sometimes pushing people away entirely.Does the movie capture that? And more importantly, does it make you understand him… or just leave you more confused?Let us know what you think. As I head past my 2nd anniversary for Revolutions Per Movie, what would be more appropriate than my first-ever Revolutions Per Movie live show back in 2023 with the one and only Peter Buck of R.E.M.!!! Two magical things kicked off before we even got on stage: 1) Peter bought everyone's food and drink for anyone who walked out of REMbyMTV and went to the snack bar, and 2) Peter asked if I could get the audience to sing the Darth Vader theme song as he walked to the stage (because of the cape he was wearing). So enjoy and thanks for supporting the show. (Episode 19 originally aired Jan. 18th 2024).THE ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:This week's episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Dec. 5th, 2023, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Peter Buck of R.E.M. joined us to discuss the documentary R.E.M. by MTV, his early years devouring music, moving to Athens, his first impressions of his bandmates, the surprises of seeing Michael grow as a performer, their relationship with the press, answering fan mail (including Chris reading a letter written to the band in 1984), what influenced songs like Harbourcoat, Michael's approach to Man On The Moon and so much more.We also raised over $4900 for The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, which supports musicians and music industry workers in Oregon during times of medical or health-related challenges. Picture the scene: You're a young screenwriter getting your first taste of success — but it's with a movie that didn't quite come out the way you wanted and the victory feels hollow. Suddenly, you find yourself being typecast as a writer of silly comedies while the industry boxes you out and the opportunities and (self)respect begin to slip away. What do you do? If you're Larry Karaszewski (and long time screenwriting partner Scott Alexander) you swerve hard out of that lane and typecast YOURSELF as auteurs of your own re-invented genre: The Anti-Biopic! Out of this savvy strategy the enduring classic ED WOOD is born and you are swept up in Hollywood's warm and loving embrace. Cut to a montage of THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, MAN ON THE MOON, BIG EYES and a lifetime of accolades, happiness and total fulfillment. THE END! On this episode we talk to Larry about going to inappropriate movies at the drive-in with his dad, a college experience that actually paid off, writing PROBLEM CHILD and then watching Robert DeNiro watch it, having a roommate that wrote HEATHERS, resurrecting Frank Perry, producing AUTO FOCUS, David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian, orphan films, Milos Forman, and we pick the best(!!!) New York movies.

What if your child's night terrors were more than just nightmares? In 2013, a mother's quiet life turned into a series of chilling encounters that would leave her questioning everything. Shadowy figures watching over her son to a sinister "man on the moon" urging him to do unspeakable things. Even after a priest's blessing seemed to quiet the chaos, echoes of the haunting returned in an unexpected way years later. If there was a surprise critical and commercial failure for the year, it was Forman's highly anticipated, Oscar-baiting Andy Kauffman biopic, Man on the Moon. Among other things, Man on the Moon was touted as a second chance for Carrey to nab a best actor Oscar, following what had roundly been seen as an epic snub for his denial of the award for The Truman Show. It had a lot going for it - an exploration of the tragic and mysterious life of an obscure but beloved cultural figure, directed by the Oscar-winning director of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus. Forman had just come off the critical and commercial success of The People Vs. Larry Flynt, written as well by Alexander and Karaszewski, who, with that film and 1994's Ed Wood had developed a reputation as having cracked the elusive biopic formula, which they described as the “anti-biopic". Unfortunately, while it did earn his his second consecutive Golden Globe, Man on the Moon was shut out from the Oscars, and the film seemed to find some way to disappoint basically everyone, even those who loved it. This week, we invited cultural critic and giant Man on the Moon fan Sean Malin to talk about Carrey, Kaufman, and that most uneven of genres, the biopic. Sean is on Twitter @cinemalins
In 1999, director Milos Forman reunited with his People Vs. Larry Flynt screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski for another biopic of an iconoclast, Man on the Moon. Rebounding from the Oscar snub for The Truman Show, Jim Carrey took on the role of Andy Kaufman and according to history, took it a bit too seriously. The film received … Continue reading "310 – Man on the Moon"
We can put a man on the moon, but we can't do this?!?
When proposing an episode for this week's show, the goal was to put focus on a tour that we haven't discussed a whole lot on this podcast - the 2011 Canadian tour. The question here was which show would be the one to cover. So we crowd sourced it and got some great answers, but the best answer was a suggestion to do the episode in tribute of former Calgary Flames star, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who were tragically killed recently. This made the Calgary 2011 show a no brainer to talk about. There is a big storyline that looms over this show. This happened to be the same day that R.E.M. called it a career. Hearing the band react to the news and play a very impassioned touching tribute to them with the song It Happened Today has been the consensus call back moment from this show. Pearl Jam could have made a decision to play one of their more well known radio singles like Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts or Man On The Moon, but we'll talk about how they selected the right song for the right moment. There are also songs in this setlist that connect to something that the band has done recently such as Brain Of J, Rats, Crazy Mary and even something relevant in concerns to Johnny Guitar! In this episode, Tarina and Nic talk about dropping off their daughter at college. As Tarina says, “Elle is now far, far away.” Nic describes his own moment when it really started to hurt as he watched Elle, during orientation, being too nervous to admit she was nervous.During the orientation session for parents, they explained the “W” model and the likely path and feelings their new freshman would experience their first year. It always starts with a honeymoon period followed by culture shock then a rebound. It's a lot of ups and downs and parents have a job to self-regulate and refrain from trying to fix everything.Chapter 6 and 7 of Nic's book Know This Do That are discussed. As Nic highlights, putting a man on the moon takes someone who's willing to push a broom and clean a toilet. What we take pride in ultimately reflects who we are.The same is true for who we surround ourselves with. If your friends, Nic says, are talking more about what video games they're playing than what investments they're making, you may want to switch things up a bit.Parents do this intentionally when they pick what city to live in, what school to send their kids to, and what church to attend. Nic tells of being the beneficiary of some “Larry Bittle Crap” (runs in the family, I guess) about choosing what pond Nic would fish in. The proof is in the pudding since Nic reeled in Tarina and got his proud angler award. If you enjoy Nic and Tarina's podcast and get something from listening to “all this Nic Bittle Crap,” please hit the like button, share it with a friend, or both. Your recommendation goes a long way in helping us reach more people.---
This week, I'm honored to be joined by not one but two brilliant screenwriters, Larry Karaszewski & Daniel Waters. Larry Karaszewski & his writing/directing/producing partner Scott Alexander are best known for writing unusual true stories such as the films ED WOOD, THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, MAN ON THE MOON, AUTO FOCUS, BIG EYES, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, & the hit television miniseries THE PEOPLE VS. OJ SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY. The team has won Emmys, Golden Globes, Producers, & Writers Guild Awards. Additionally, Larry is also a former Governor & Vice President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Born in Ohio & raised in Indiana, Daniel Waters is the Edgar award-winning screenwriter of the 1988 cult classic HEATHERS starring Winona Ryder & Christian Slater. Additionally, the man who wrote or co-wrote the films BATMAN RETURNS, HUDSON HAWK, THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE, DEMOLITION MAN, & more, he's also the writer-director of HAPPY CAMPERS & SEX & DEATH 101. Best friends & movie buddies since their teenage years in Indiana, in the fourth season of Watch With Jen, the two joined me to dissect the films of director Michael Ritchie, & this year, they're back to take us on another trip through the films of the 1970s, courtesy of actor Jan-Michael Vincent whose luscious blonde hair & laid back approach made him one of the most popular up-and-coming stars of the era. Although initially, we agreed on five films, including BUSTER & BILLIE, THE MECHANIC, WHITE LINE FEVER, THE WORLD'S GREATEST ATHLETE, & VIGILANTE FORCE, Larry & Dan made it their mission to do as much extra credit as possible, watching everything from obscure TV movies like TRIBES & SANDCASTLES to bigger hits like HOOPER & more. Along the way, we discuss Dan's issues with JMV in the '70s & this dream (or nightmare) he had where I ruined the vibe of his party, Larry's decision to watch two JMV movies on the ceiling under laughing gas at the dentist, & much, much more. What can I say? This conversation is a journey - a rollicking, thoughtful, & very engaging journey - & you're sure to love it.Originally Posted on Patreon (8/20/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/110417546Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi
The Stallions continue their Ohio artist album review series with Kid Cudi's Man on the Moon: The End of Day. Released in 2009, Man on the Moon: The End of Day offers a slew of notable guest features, unique psychedelic hip hop sounds, and production from many high-profile names, including Kanye West, Plain Pat, and Emile Haynie, among others. Kid Cudi's Cleveland roots are discussed throughout the album along with lyrical themes of internal conflict and family dysfunction. Check it out!

It seems inevitable to us now that someone would eventually land on the moon. But back in 1962 that wasn't so certain. With the ever-rising costs of the Apollo space program, and a huge amount of tax needed from each US citizen, JFK struggled to convince people. That was until one speech on a sunny day in September. This speech went down in history, persuading the nation to reach for the moon. In today's Nudge, I explain the psychological tactics Kennedy used to make that speech so compelling. This week on "I've Been Meaning to Listen to That," we listen to "Man on the Moon - End of Day" by Kid Cudi with special guest Jon Butts! Plus, Andrew, Michael, Harper, Stenley, and Jon discuss the seismic positive impact Kid Cudi had on kids with mental wellness difficulties, how the pursuit of happiness is portrayed as a capitalist hellscape on this record, the endearing stoner silliness that shines through his vocal timbre, how this album is connected to Harper's experience at a Project Y house party, and discuss some alt outros to Ariana's latest record! The investigation continues with a look at a third suspect, Jimmy Burnett, who appears to have written his own notes as he tried to solve the murders of Shane Stewart and Sally McNelly. But his ex-girlfriend Laura says he knew more than he let on. In this episode, we take our investigation halfway around the world to track down Burnett, who, according to the authorities, moved to the Philippines and then faked his own death.
We are told that we landed on the moon and brought men safely home in 1969. And yet, we are currently unable to return after all these years and technical advances. This one observation alone should stand witness to the false nature of earth space agencies. When all is said and done, “they” are all (more...)
John Thurmon swore he'd be the first man on the moon. But he wasn't. He was only the first murderer. The First Man On The Moon by Alfred Coppel, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. In recent weeks with the addition of commercials in our podcast some listeners have told us they have chosen to lower their rating, solely based on commercials and not because they dislike the podcast.Because of that I'm going to take a few seconds and explain why those commercials are there. Upon my death my wife will not receive my social security and will be left with no income. That bothers me, so two years ago I started narrating these stories with the hope that audiobook sales would provide her with some money. Then I added the podcast with the desire that it too might eventually generate some money so that my wife could live out the rest of her days with dignity. That's one of the reasons why we value you and every listener we have, and everything you do to help us promote the podcast, we appreciate every one of you who buys us a coffee, or purchases merchandise from our store. You are helping me fulfill the promise I made to my wife to take care of her. I love my wife and my promise to provide for her when I'm gone is something I take very seriously. Thank you for your understanding and your support.Regarding those who choose to rate and review our podcast, I respect your right to say and do whatever you choose. Thank you.To say I love our story today would be a huge understatement. From Planet Stories magazine in the spring of 1950, our story can be found on page 36, The First Man on the Moon by Alfred Coppel…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Johnson knew he was annoying the younger man, who so obviously lived by the regulations in the Colonial Officer's Manual and lacked the imagination to understand why he was doing this… The Most Sentimental Man by Evelyn E.
