Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

This week we take a look at one of the standout features of the 70's blaxploitation age, William Crain's seminal vampire movie, Blacula, starring William Marshall, Vonetta McGee, and Thalmus Rasulala. Blaxploitation is a troubling topic to take on as the bad movie outnumber the good movies three to one and definitely play up the worst black stereotypes but for a little while there blaxploitation movies and their arty cousin, the LA Rebellion, pushed forward black power narratives and power fantasies that spotlighted black talent and provided black audiences with great characters that reflected their values and dreams.Blacula as a horror movie is also a standout picture, being every bit as riveting and spooky as Hammer's best outings. William Marshall absolutely dominates the screen as doomed Prince Mamuwalde and Vonetta McGee is hard to take your eyes off of. Give this episode and listen and do chill out. Bryan realized too late that yes, All The Colors of the Dark is a Sergio Martino movie and What Have You Done To Solange was by Massimo Dellamano.Support Bring Me The Axe on Patreon!https://www.patreon.com/c/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

Not to be confused with Sergio Martino's other scorpion movie The Case of the Scorpion's Tale, this pseudo-giallo film follows an ancient Etruscan history, the murder of John Saxon's character, and a drug-smuggling ring in a very muddled plot that was originally intended to be a limited run TV series. Unfortunately, this movie is often tedious to get through and has no real grasp of the viewer throughout, so we struggle to find some interesting things to say about this misstep in Martino's filmography. Filled with odd flourishes and bizarre choices, it's equally confusing and enthralling - just like our hosts! This week, we set the Wayback machine to “1983” and continue discussing the Italian wave of post-Mad Max films.  First up, we race against the Eurac Monarchy to find a fertile woman in Sergio Martino's 2019, AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK, starring Michael Sopkiw, Anna Kanakis, and George Eastman.  Then we penetrate the Wall of Illusion with the Rider in WARRIOR OF THE LOST WORLD, starring Robert Ginty, Persis Khambatta, Donald Pleasance, and Fred Williamson.  We finish up protecting our water from Alien in EXTERMINATORS OF THE YEAR 3000.

Devin & James are back in the Den with a new topic! We are taking a TOUR OF ITALY, an 8-episode long series, each featuring a different sub-genre created or perfected by Italian filmmakers. We begin with a journey through the shadowy dream territory of GIALLO films. These films are highly stylized murder mysteries, most with a heaping helping of gore. We offer up a sample of some great specimens, and specifically some of the great directors, in this uniquely Italian movement, with a focus on Mario Bava's BLOOD & BLACK LACE, Lucio Fulci's DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING, Sergio Martino's TORSO, and of course, Dario Argento's DEEP RED. We also go over a few other titles, as well as define the tropes that make a Giallo easy to spot, even if it's not so easy to spot that gloved killer sneaking up from behind!
