This week, as we wrap up our sermon series called Little Letters Big Truths, we explore Titus. High School Pastor Eli breaks down some big truths around leadership and biblical teaching. Not only do we see what to be warry about wit false teachers, but we also learn how discipleship brings biblical maturity. Discipleship is the process of committing yourself to be a student of Jesus, to follow Him and continually grow towards being more like Him. As we look in Titus, we see that there is an order to this process, and it takes time to grow. As we become more Christ-like, we are to be obedient and kind, and always be thankful by remembering our old condition. When we look back, it builds gratitude, humility, and faith. Our hope comes not from our ability or decisions in life, but from Jesus' finished work on the cross and from His righteousness. Maybe you want to take next step in your discipleship path but are unsure what that is. Do you have a question that's bugging you about following Jesus? We'd love to help, reach out at www.burnthickory.com/next.
Today we explore Isaiah Chapter 6 as we continue to look for examples of fire throughout the bible and we study the passage where Isaiah is brought before the Lord, and his lips are cleansed by a hot coal. We see that God's holiness affects us in that we are to be separated and set apart as a reflection of Him. We also learn that holiness magnifies our corruption and mandates our purification. When we boast about our accomplishments of faith, we lose sight of God's holiness. What is it that you see as a strength that God needs control of in your life? In the bible, later on in Isaiah, we see that it's the voice of God that calls us out - to be set apart and no longer be unclean. In this sermon, pastor Matt preaches about what it means to have faith and be purified from sin, because God is holy, and we need to know that we are to be holy too. Are you standing before a holy God with unclean lips? Do you need to be saved? Has God's holiness motivated your commission in life? If you've got questions, please reach out, we'd love to pray with you - BurntHickory.com/next
There are two aspects to salvation. The first is being saved from our sins; the second is salvation from this present evil world. Everyone can quote John 3:16, yet if this is the only part of salvation we understand, we are missing half of God's plan: "Jesus gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father." (Galatians 1:4) In this message, Brother Singh emphasizes the necessity of sanctifying ourselves from the contaminating influences of the world.
This is Mac Carraway and he's been a Christian for about six months. This is his testimony of where he was before Christ, how he came to obey Jesus' gospel, and the difference his relationship with God has made in his life. It's a personal and intimate look into the mindset of a young man who was confused and found clarity in serving the Lord. Mac has been a great encouragement to his brethren - his fire and desire to be honest and grow is refreshing. He's also faced a lot of criticism for this honesty and change, and that makes his testimony all the more effective and appreciated. Sin is all around us and certainly in us, even if it’s not popular to call it that. The message of Jesus Christ is one of the few to take sin seriously and the only one to deal with it effectively. James 5:7-20 shows us the key concern of this short letter and draws the major themes of the letter together so we will be active in winning people back from the way of sin. If you are trying to have a quiet time, getting started in a relationship with God or seeking guidance at this point in your life, you're in the right place. In fifteen minutes or less you will listen to God's word for you, reflect on it and learn to pray to God as well as carry that word with you through the rest of your day. It's a perfect way to get started! In season four we are praying through some of the letters in the Bible. In this episode we finish praying through James, one of the General Letters filled with practical teaching and wisdom. We see again today that James' letter is very gospel-centered and also rooted in the Jewish Torah. The last few verses of James show us the overriding concern that James has as he writes this letter. There are two ways, wisdom and foolishness, and following the world's "wisdom" or pursuing its riches will lead us down the wrong way and encourage us to sin. James wants to be active in restoring people back from sin and praying with them and for them. At the beginning of the letter he told us to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry. Now at the end, he says the same thing essentially but with different words: be patient, don't grumble against a brother or swear an oath vainly, and instead of getting angry, love and forgive your brother. James also points to the example of Job and Elijah to encourage forbearance and faith, especially expressed through prayer. The key application question is are you saved from sin beyond doubt? If not, contact us. If so, take the next step of faith and win someone back from the path of sin. We have been using the letters to grow closer to God in season four. We can't exhaust the riches in each part of scripture we cover, but you can go deeper into them on your own using our four step process. You can download the helpsheet that details and demonstrates the four step process we use on First Fifteen using Psalm 1.If you want to get more daily encouragement you can follow me on Twitter or Instagram @WordofPrayer15 . The story of the prodigal son is really a picture of how we, as sinners, have strayed away from God and desire to live our lives just as we choose - without God. It's a sad commentary on the human heart. Just like the prodigal, we take all the good things that the Father has provided for us and leave for the 'far country' to spend our time and resources on things that just don't satisfy. Only when the prodigal 'came to his senses' was he prepared to turn back again in search of all that he had left behind.
Paul describes the problem with divine satisfaction and presents an alternative biblical understanding. As long as we are willing to sell our brother down the river, have the other suffer instead of us, I believe we have no part in true Christianity. When we are willing, though, to take up the cross and stand with those who are suffering, stand with those who are oppressed, then I believe we have joined the way for Christ.
