A Word With You

There are those moments when I make life much harder than it has to be, and in fact sometimes I wonder if I'm slipping. There was a time not too long ago when I looked frantically for my house keys. And, of course, I mobilized the whole family and said, "I've got to get out of here! I'm running late! Everybody go on a search mission; we've got to find my keys." I found them in the door right where I'd left them. I've been doing that since I was about 20. Did you ever find your car keys missing and you run all over the place, and you find them in your own hand? Oh, you say, "Oops!" Or your glasses and they're on your face. It happens more often than you might think. The answer you've been looking for frantically might be right there in front of you. You might be surprised how close the answer is to what you've been looking for. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Answer Under Your Nose." Now, our word for today from the Word of God about the answer under your nose is in John 14, beginning at verse 6. "Jesus answered, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you really knew Me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him.' Philip said, 'Lord, show us the Father and that would be enough for us.' Jesus answered, 'Don't you know Me, Philip, even after I have been among you for such a long time? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, "Show us the Father"?'" This passage introduces us to what I call the Philip Syndrome. Philip has this problem - we read about it in the New Testament. He seems to have the tendency to miss an answer that is right in front of him. And who knows, you might be suffering from the Philip Syndrome. Remember back to the feeding of the five thousand? Philip said, "Lord, what are we going to do? We don't have near enough money, even if we go to a bank and get a loan. How are we ever going to feed all these people?" And Jesus said, "Why don't you go look for a lunch? The answer's right here. All we need's a lunch - go find a lunch." Here He's looking for some special event. He says, "Lord, we want to see the Father. We want to have a big, spiritual event here." And Jesus said, "Look at Me! I'm right in front of you." The answer in John 14 was right in front of Philip. I wonder if the answer you've been waiting for, straining for, praying for could be right in front of you. For example, maybe you've been waiting for just the right person to come along to fill a very important slot. Why don't you look around at the people you already have right now instead of pinning all your hopes on somebody that Scotty's going to beam down from the Enterprise? Maybe the person you need has been right under your nose all along, and you haven't seen what they could do. Or maybe you need to look again at your money and your resources, and find if there's a creative way to use what you already have instead of waiting for more. Maybe the answer you've been looking for, praying for is right there in the resources you already have if you just used them differently. Or look at yourself. Maybe you're the answer to your prayer. Maybe God wants you to do what you've been praying for somebody else to do. Our ministry started in New York years ago when a young woman came up to me and said, "Ron, I've been praying for a year for somebody to be the first Youth For Christ staff worker." She said, "You know what? I think it's me." The answer was right under her nose. Yeah, maybe you're the answer to your own prayer. Maybe God is leading you to stop doing something or to start doing something. You're just not obeying, you're hoping for something easy. Quit running around looking for an answer. Stand back! Maybe you've got it. Maybe the answer is right in front of you.

Cindy emphasizes the impact of her work on the lives of children and the importance of trusting others in ministry. Cindy Cunningham's (Director and Founder of Village of Hope Uganda) life today can be summed up in one statement, “For such a time as this”.  Growing up in a dysfunctional, alcoholic and physical abusive family, she found the Lord at the age of 16. At the age of 18 Cindy gave her life to God's calling to do whatever and go wherever He wanted her to serve.  Immediately after attending Welch Christian College, she spent nearly 40 years ministering to men, women & children through Youth For Christ, Josh McDowell ministries, ALARM (African Leadership and Reconciliation Ministries.    Her heart has always been drawn to children and youth, especially those who have come from broken and wounded families. But her real passion was to one day minister in Africa. God made that dream come true in 2006 when she was working for African Leadership And Reconciliation Ministry. She had the opportunity to see the real life and heart ache of people in Kenya, Congo, Rwanda, Sudan and Uganda. Happy Wednesday!   This is the fourth in a series of episodes dedicated to a young woman named Lizzy. Today we're talking with special guest, Tim Stratton, founder of Free Thinking Ministries. Tim is here to discuss Lizzy's questions about free will, and God choosing people. He shares about why these types of conversations are important to him personally. He also shares about his passion for Molinism.  Lizzy is a college student from Chelan, Washington. Lizzy grew up in a loving Christian home but has a lot of questions about God, identity, and purpose. She is a very curious person and is someone who often takes things literally. She admits she struggles with anxiety and wonders why God pursues her when it's hard for her to trust Him. She says she's sensed Him trying to get her attention but is unsure about having experienced His love. Lizzy and Janell have known each other for seven years.    We hope you enjoy this week's episode!     About Tim: Timothy A. Stratton was in youth ministry for fifteen years. He started as an intern in Santa Cruz, California, then went on to work for Youth For Christ, Navigators, and eventually worked as a youth pastor for nearly ten years in the Evangelical Free Church in Kearney, Nebraska. He saw first-hand how the lies of “new atheists” were impacting the young impressionable minds of his students. This led Tim to devote his life to answering “tough” questions about God and Christianity. As a result, Tim founded FreeThinking Ministries in 2015. Tim pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Nebraska-Kearney (B.A. 1997) and after working in full-time ministry for several years went on to attain his graduate degree from Biola University (M.A. 2014). More recently, Tim earned his Doctorate in Systematic Theology from North-West University (Ph.D. 2020).  His doctoral work primarily focuses on demonstrating God's middle knowledge and mankind's libertarian freedom (“Mere Molinism”), and how this view has apologetic significance. Along with FTM, Tim is a professor of Theology at Trinity Theological Seminary and College of the Bible. He has spoken to numerous audiences around the country and loves to engage in one-on-one conversations with anyone doubting or wrestling with the truth of Christianity. He spends much of his time recording podcasts and writing articles on his website. He also enjoys interacting with our culture via several social media outlets. Tim is passionate about answering questions regarding God, the Bible, and Christianity.    -- -- -- -- --   Links: https://freethinkingministries.com/tim-stratton/ Human Freedom, Divine Knowledge, & Mere Molinism Faith Examined on Amazon FSR YouTube Page FSR Patron

Jumping Before You've Heard It All - #9731

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2024

When I was in high school, I was a part of Youth For Christ's very active Bible Quiz program. Now, it was a long time ago, but I still remember a lot that I learned in studying books of the Bible in this highly competitive atmosphere. There was a lot of intense excitement when we would get together. Sometimes, believe it or not, thousands of people would be there for the competition as the championship quiz teams would be pitted against each other, seated on chairs that used, well what was then sophisticated equipment, and it registered who got off the chair first. A light would go on and then they had the first opportunity to answer the question. If they jumped during the question, which I often did, that was the best way to make sure you got the opportunity, you had to finish the question correctly and then give the answer. So here is the Quiz Master asking, jump as soon as you think you can finish this question. Many times we were so high-strung that we'd jump too soon...ridiculously soon. For example we'd be quizzing on the whole Gospel of John, and the Quiz Master would say, "Wh..." And suddenly you'd see three people on their feet, and he'd call, "Number one." Oh, you almost always lost that question, "Wh..." Who could figure that out? Of course, you always lose when you jump too soon. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Jumping Before You've Heard It All." Well, our word for today from the Word of God comes from Proverbs 18:13 - the great wisdom of Solomon. He says, "He who answers before listening..." Okay, sounds like that old Bible quiz doesn't it? "He who answers before listening, that is his folly; that is his shame." Well, the New Testament version of that might be James 1:19, which says this: "Everyone should be quick to listen and slow to speak." Now we have just slightly re-written that one. We're quick to speak and slow to listen. And notice the listening comes before the speaking. Solomon tells us that we ought to be ashamed of ourselves. It's our folly! It's foolish! It's shameful if we speak before we listen. See, we hear the beginning of what someone is trying to tell us and we assume we know the rest. And like the old Bible quizzers, we jump with our reply. It happens in our marriage conversations. It happens between parents and children. We anticipate the rest and we don't understand each other as a result. Biblically-wise people don't just listen to the sentence, they listen to the whole paragraph. They don't respond to the opening line. Oh, they may listen to the whole page. When you jump too soon, you usually end up misunderstanding. You react to the symptom, not the problem. See, the person doesn't pay attention to what you're saying because you didn't pay attention to them. Conflict erupts, walls go up. If you played back the recording of you today, would we often hear you being quick to speak? If so, you might be inflicting hurt, frustration, misunderstanding and causing people to just shut down and not even want to tell you anymore. How are you perceived by your mate, your children, your parents, your friends when it comes to listening? Maybe someone has basically stopped trying. But tell them you want another chance. It takes patience; it takes self-control to listen; not just to a person's words, but to their heart. It is, according to the Word of God, foolish not to listen before you speak. Now, we're told that part of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5 is patience and self-control. You know, that's what it takes to listen before you speak. So, "Dear Lord, give me patience. Give me self-control. Teach me, Lord, to listen." Take it from an old Bible quizzer who sometimes couldn't wait, "When you jump too soon, you usually get it wrong."

It is 52 weeks out of the year. Giving does not have to be prescriptive. What breaks your heart? Use that. Fundraising isn't about the money, it's about the heart of the giving partner. It is spiritual before it is mechanical.Be disciplined without haste. Rhythms of rest are necessary. There is always going to be more work to be done, but never once does the Bible say “Jesus ran.”  "I don't know about you and your 20s, but for me, I wanted a beacon for the next 200 steps. I didn't want a lamp to my feet and a light to my path, right? But the beauty of that is He gives us that lamp and it's just enough light for the next step and the next step and the next step." —  Jake Bland Episode References: C12: https://www.joinc12.com/Halftime Institute: https://halftimeinstitute.org/Pursuing God's Will Together: A Discernment Practice for Leadership Groups by Ruth Haley BartonThe Council: A Biblical Perspective on Board Governance by Gary G. Andy McDaniel... Leader... Ripple... Tsunami!   What is a tsunami? A tsunami is a series of extremely long waves caused by a large and sudden displacement of the ocean, usually the result of an earthquake below or near the ocean floor. This force creates waves that radiate outward in all directions away from their source, sometimes crossing entire ocean basins.   Andy McDaniel was born and raised in poverty in Alabama, USA (or Bama as he would say). He was 1 of 5 children. In high school, a girl he liked invited him to a Campus Life Club, which is a division of Youth For Christ. That was the first RIPPLE. This young lady had no idea that she had awakened a sleeping Giant of a Leader! She simply did the right thing.   His Campus Life Director led him to Jesus and discipled him... RIPPLE #2 has now begun! Andy feels called to Campus Life Ministry with YFC and thus the ripple becomes an EARTH SHAKING event that has occurred, but no one has yet identified. He becomes a Campus Life Coordinator for Clearwater and later Orlando and that starts a quake in me (Doug) and my ministry. When a Tsunami begins it can't help but to take everything and everyone around it with them. Executive Director, (now Andy) calls the shots in Miami, Nashville, Grand Rapids, and Miami for a second time! People he has led to Jesus and the young men and women he has trained to be leaders are all over the USA and the World. Now people not only see, but feel and know the Tsunami effect cannot be stopped.    36 years in Youth For Christ and 15 years in Moriah Ministries, Andy has done his good works that God planned in advance for him to do in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:10) His wife Valerie, his 3 children, and many grandchildren know this Tsunami of a leader well. He has now gone to heaven and waiting to see all that God has done yet to come.   You are the man Andy... It took me a year and a half in seminary to learn how to let the passage speak for itself! At the Tru316 Foundation we take great care to let God speak to us through word studies and through analysis of the literary patterns that are present in the 7 key passages on women and men related to Genesis 3:16.I had a handful of illustrations I  always used. But the Bible speaks to us about more than that! I'm afraid many others in ministry haven't carefully let the original 11 Hebrew words in Genesis 3:16 speak to us. What my wife clearly revealed in her research on Genesis 2-3 we carefully included in two of our books (see Tru316.com/trubooks), Man and Woman in Biblical Unity: Theology from Genesis 2-3 by Dr. Joy Fleming (available as a free audiobook from the top section of Tru316.com, and as an eBook on Amazon)The Book of Eden, Genesis 2-3 by Bruce C. It's imperative for Christians to pass on their faith to others, and especially to our youth. But oftentimes, adults don't realize just how significant this responsibility is, or how desperately our youth yearn to have a faith they can be assured of. Today's episode of the Alex McFarland Show is a conversation between Alex and Carl Kerby that takes place at the Equip youth retreat. They give an update on how the retreat is going, and explain why believers can't be indifferent towards Christ or the salvation of others. “If we don't get the next generation, we're going to have big problems in the future”. When Aaron Clark returned to Kankakee from living in Atlanta, his first stop coming into town was Kankakee City Life's Youth for Christ, a ministry which nationwide seeks to reach young people through the gospel of Jesus Christ and locally seeks to empower indigenous leaders. Through teaching highschoolers practical life skills and belief in the restorative power of community, Youth for Christ and most recently, Kankakee Forgives, have seen the positive ripple effects of their service to the community. Through Youth for Christ and Kankakee Forgives, Aaron Clark aids in positioning community youth into places of healing and excellence with the intention of redirecting youth towards success. As Aaron has seen through experience, investing in youth is a long-term investment. Those who were in the programs years ago return with their success stories and thanks to the programs years later. Tune in to the conversation with Aaron Clark, Dr. Jeff Williamson and Brian Prairie as they hear Aaron Clark's story of becoming a local community leader and the stories of success with Youth for Christ and Kankakee Forgives.   ----MEET YOUR GUESTAaron Clark grew up in the Kankakee area, but moved to Atlanta after high school until 2005. Aaron Clark credits much of his development as a leader and believer to the mentorship of Pastor Wayne C. Thompson in Atlanta. Additionally while in Atlanta, Aaron served with JUMP, Just Using My Power, an organization which served community youth. When Aaron moved back to Kankakee, he recognized the need for a similar community program in the Kankakee area. Aaron Clark serves as City Life Director for Youth For Christ and leads the movement Kankakee Forgives, which seeks to reduce youth violence through the act of forgiveness. Kankakee Forgives connects with local schools and organizations to teach the power of forgiveness. Kankakee Forgives ----Media Mentions: Leading On Empty, Wayne Cordeiro (Book)Leading Up, Michael Useem (Book)

As followers of Jesus we want to be the type of people that continue to keep relationships, even when conflicts arise. Modeling how to make relationships last will increase our love for one another and is worth the struggle, but will require that you help students learn more about themselves and the people that they are fighting with.   Here are the steps that Steve walks through in this conversation:   Understand Myself…  This can sound like: What's going on for you? Tell me your story. What significance does that hold? Understand The Other… This can sound like: I wonder how that person felt when you reacted. What do you think is going on in their world? How do you think your reaction collided with the other person's story? Build A Boundary… This can sound like: Identify what's going on within themselves, express their own feelings, express the desired outcome, come with a solution   Special thanks to our friends at Youth For Christ and their partnership in this season. Charles Templeton was surging ahead in ministry. Converted at 21, by 1946, the Canadian evangelist founded Youth For Christ. Billy Graham was hired as the organization's first full-time evangelist, and he and Templeton toured Europe together.   A decade later, after a turn at Princeton Theological Seminary and after wrestling with doubt, Templeton began to identify as agnostic, and his world would never be the same. Colossians 2:8 says, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world and not according to Christ.”   Sometimes for various reasons, people walk away from their faith. In the strictest definition of this, one becomes an apostate. Sometimes a person goes on quietly about his or her life. Other times the effects are far-reaching. Joseph Stalin once studied for the priesthood, then he read Karl Marx. It's often true that the people who are most passionate about sharing Christ can also sort of burn out. They run hot for a long time, and then the bottom falls out.   We've all seen celebrities that claim to know God. Some even identify as Christian, but their lives are anything but, and this calls to mind the famous passage in Matthew 13:20–22, in which the parable is given of seed being thrown onto various kinds of soil. Some of the seed, which represents the gospel, finds its way onto rocky ground or among weeds. Those hearing the Word at first are taken with it, but later abandon the faith. In the Old Testament, some good life lessons were given to the Israelites who struggled living among pagan nations. Jeremiah 10:2 says, “Thus says the Lord, learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them.” The idea was to maintain spiritual purity so that the storms of life would not take away a person's faith.   We're the same way today. If we aren't careful, the world can look too good, and before long we're looking in the rearview mirror at a faith that we once had.    Let's pray.    Father God, help us to always keep in mind the gift that Jesus gave us on the cross. Help us daily to meditate on your grace and the mercy for our lives so that we can stay spiritually healthy. In Jesus' name. Amen.
