+++ PLAYLIST +++ · 22:55 – THE SEA BRINGS, WAVES OF CASTED SILVER SOFTLY CRAWLS, INTO MOSS WE SINK von BEN KACZOR & NICULIN BARANDUN · 22:51 – MÉLANCOLIE von Lescop · 22:43 – TABLE DEATH SET von MORD FUZZTANG · 22:39 – SEEN TOO MUCH von MORD FUZZTANG · 22:37 – GUESS IT'S WRECKED von MOIN FEAT. We're digging deep this week into all of your burning questions. What does it take to craft gigantic puppets for Broadway? Does art history as we know it need a drastic makeover? And how exactly did a small record label in Vancouver, Wash. come across new music from Prince that has them in a battle with the Purple One's estate?Local Puppet Legend Michael Curry Conjures the Myth of Persephone with the Oregon Symphony - 1:24This weekend, the Oregon Symphony will wade into the wonderful world of puppets with a production of "Persephone" (May 13–15). For the first time, it’s collaborating with Michael Curry, the puppet master behind the animals in the Broadway production of "The Lion King," as well as Olympic opening ceremonies and other massive events. OPB's Molly Solomon takes us to Curry’s massive warehouse in Scappoose, Oregon to see his magical operations.Shaking Up The Classics at Oregon Shakespeare Festival - 3:30For our money, the hottest ticket at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this spring is a show with an ancient story: “Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles,” which runs through July 6. It’s a retelling of Euripides’ classic tale of a princess witch who’s followed her lover into exile in a foreign land. When he rejects her, she kills her own children in an act of vengeance. Adapted by the MacArthur-winning playwright Luis Alfaro, “Mojada” reforms the classic Greek tale into a story about Mexican immigrants trying to make it in Los Angeles.World Premiered Play Asks: Is the American Dream All It's Cracked Up to Be? - 10:21Seattle-based playwright Yussef El Guindi scandalized Portland, in a good way, with the world premiere of his play “Threesome” at Portland Center Stage in 2015. It’s about a Muslim couple’s failed attempt to invite a non-Muslim into their bed, but there’s a lot more going on in the show than pillow talk. El Guindi returns to the dynamics of a troubled immigrant couple with his new play, “The Talented Ones,” which is getting its world premiere at Portland’s Artists Repertory Theater through May 21. How Did Vancouver Become the Center of a Fight over Prince's Music? - 17:42Last month, when a Minnesota judge halted the release of an album featuring six previously unreleased songs from the late artist Prince, something caught our eye. The record label in the middle of the legal battle was a largely unknown company from Vancouver, Washington called Rogue Music Alliance. Before a federal judge halted its release, the EP, “Deliverance,” was the top selling pre-order on iTunes, with the single “Deliverance” hitting the No. 1 rock single spot. The Fallen Heroes of Comic Book Writer Chris Sebela - 23:16Chris Sebela’s comic “Heartthrob” is the furthest thing from a romance novel. With art by Robert Wilson, “Heartthrob” tells the story of a woman who gets a heart transplant that not only saves her life, but throws her into a chaotic affair with the man who originally housed the heart — or at least his specter. Turns out he was a criminal and wants her to carry on some unfinished heists. Turns out, Sebela has a thing for heroes with flaws, from the disgraced snowboard at the center of his hit graphic novel “High Crimes,” to the out-of-work movie monsters in "Screamland."opbmusic Session with Kelli Schaefer - 32:27Portland songwriter Kelli Schaefer crafts ghostly rock songs that explore themes of capitalism and mortality — songs that're spurred by a big, dark voice that’s drawn comparisons to PJ Harvey. Her new album, “No Identity,” is a loosely-organized concept album following a family’s run-ins with tragedy and the mundane. Schaefer will perform at Mississippi Studios on May 16. Want a taste? Check out videos of her opbmusic session. Why Everything You Need to Know You Did NOT Learn in Art History - 39:10A little while ago, we had on the writer, artist, and art activist Jennifer Rabin to talk about two projects she's behind: Artists Resist and Art Passport PDX. But the original reason we contacted her was to talk about an article she wrote for "Willamette Week" about the "Constructing Identities" exhibition at the Portland Art Museum. She wrote that her education in art history left her woefully unprepared to write about a show by African-American artists — or any underrepresented artist for that matter. So for our latest installment in our "What Are You Looking At?" series, we invited her to walk through the show with us.
Should you invest in comic books? Did Bill Finger create Batman? These two questions and the subsequent narratives surrounding their potential answers dominate the conversation this week as Kurt brings in Screamland creator Harold Sipe and amateur collecting enthusiast "The Weasel" to get some answers. Who and how much Bill Finger contributed to the creation of Batman has long been debated amongst truly hardcore comic book fans, and this week Kurt learns a little bit more of why. He also laments the ominous eyes of Alan Moore staring him down in social media feeds, and dissects how he chooses which comic books to invest in. BONUS: He and The Weasel each give you five reasonable comic book issues to invest in right now.
Harold Sipe's creative journey started off at a young age with sculpting. Somehow, a turn of fateful events led him to digital media and app development. Along the way, his comic book interests grew into the formation of Screamland, a critically acclaimed comic book miniseries. Harold sits down with Kurt to discuss his creative path, the ups and downs of the comic book industry, and why the monster Frank hasn't left his thoughts just yet…

Products and Services offered by Music For Haunts Music For Haunts creates brand new original music for attractions ranging from ambient background music to full voice and orchestration. Music For Haunts also releases a “Best Of” compilation album every season. What is next in 2015? This season Chris is finishing up work with the LA Haunted Hayride and Screamland in the UK. What does the process look like? The process can change depending on the client from being very ordered to figuring it out on the go. In the ordered approach, Chris first meets with the haunt to outline a clear thematic goal and gets an understanding of what’s happening in each scene; he then composes a draft to tweak with the client before hiring any performers. Example Songs from Music For Haunts: Cookie Monster Song & Lullaby from Killers New York. Why is music important for Haunted Attractions? There was a plethora of reasons discussed on the podcast, but one of the largest deals with nurturing an immersive environment for the guest rather than disrupting their immersion- when a guest hears music that doesn’t fit the theme or is from a Halloween Top 10 List, it causes them to be pulled out of the scene.
While Chris was away at New York Comic-Con, we welcomed two guests this week: Lee Leslie, the artist of Screamland and writer/artist of Rigby the Barbarian, and Daniel Kibblesmith, comedian and co-author of the upcoming book How to Win at Everything! Spooky, monster-related things are discussed, along with classic adventure games, doing characters on podcasts, how one can be a victor at reading, and of course, Cracker Barrel.
Neseman's even more fired up than usual as we talk about Sandman Mystery Theatre, Jeff Lemire and Sweet Tooth, Cable: Reborn, Evil Deadpool, IDW's Artist Editions, upcoming EC Comics reprints from Fantagraphics, SDCC 2011, the Captain America movie, Howard Chaykin's Black Kiss and the forthcoming Image Comics sequel/prequel, ZAP Comics, Creepy #6 from Dark Horse (Joe R. Lansdale, Nathan Fox, Jason Shawn Alexander, Budd Lewis, Archie Goodwin, Neal Adams, and more!), the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1969, Fables, B.P.R.D., the Eisner Awards (COMICS AND VEGETABLES), Screamland #1 from Image, Halcyon, IDW's Locke and Key: Keys to the Kingdom by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, Frank Darabont and Walking Dead, George Herriman and the greatness of Krazy Kat, B-One Comics, Cinderella: Fables are Forever, Crossed: Psychopath, Lady Death, and a whole mess more!
June 6, 2011 - We're doubling up Don't Miss this week, with 2 books that deserve your eyeballs and patronage. Hold on for two very different takes on horror. Don't Miss either of them! First up, Christopher Sebela tells us about Screamland #1 from Image Comics. Continuing a mini series from a few years back, the now-ongoing book takes a look at a Hollywood where the monsters are real, not just actors. Except they're just like actors. But times have gotten tougher for them, as CGI and modern tastes have made it harder to get good work for Wolf Man, the Fish Monster, and others. Sebela is co-writing this satirical look at Hollywood and the horror movie genre with original series creator Harold Sipe. Screamland #1 Story by Christopher Sebela and Harold Sipe Art by Lee Leslie $2.99 - Image Comics Next up, Scott Snyder is with us talking about American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #1 from Vertigo. This mini series focuses on the European theater in WWII (as the main series is in the Pacific right now), as Cash McCogan and Felicia Book fight Nazis. Of course, there are vampires and secrets and all that good stuff, but there is also the sublime Sean Murphy on art duties. Scott tells us all about what to expect with the mini-series.
