On "The Clay Edwards Show," host Clay Edwards delivers unfiltered talk radio from the Men's Health and Women's Wellness of Mississippi Studios. The two-hour Monday show tackles local issues, particularly "culture rot" in Jackson and surrounding areas, which Edwards claims sparks backlash when criticized. He recounts a viral Facebook post about a mayoral candidate twerking at Topgolf, igniting accusations of racism, which he attributes to "Black fatigue" over defending indecent behavior. Edwards also addresses a mass shooting in Fayette, Mississippi, criticizing media silence when perpetrators aren't white. The show features a "Heavy Hitters" segment with outlaw entrepreneur Jonathan Beard, discussing his restaurant and food truck ventures, including Crooked Letter Kitchen. Edwards celebrates the upcoming 1,000th episode, reflecting on defying cancel culture and amplifying Jackson's issues. He promotes local businesses and shares personal anecdotes, like a youth baseball team's perseverance, emphasizing life lessons from sports. Edwards remains defiant, vowing to confront critics head-on.
Ashleigh Flynn is a long time Portland musician who was primarily a solo artist for much of her career. But that all changed in 2015 when a friend introduced her to Nancy Luca, who had an all-female cover band. She and Luca hit it off and drew other women into a new all-female band: Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters, an homage to Rosie the Riveter, the WWII-era icon of female power and can-do spirit. The band is celebrating 10 years of making Americana music that embraces joy and creativity as a facet of resistance with a new album called "Good Morning Sunshine,” which drops this week. The band will play a record release concert at Mississippi Studios in Portland on Saturday, April 5, before they hit the road on tour. Flynn joins us in studio with Luca and other members of the band to play a few songs and give us a sneak peek of the album.

Send us a textThis week the Portland-based duo, Wonderly stopped by to discuss their latest album Wolves/ We also talked about the Low Bar Chorale, A new German Opera, and so much more.********Wolves is the culmination of a creative partnership that dates back to 2016. Brunberg and Landsverk debuted Wonderly with a self-titled 2017 collection; the unit continued with the post-pandemic release Story We Tell in 2022 and the covers collection Appropriate 'til Death in 2023. Their film scores have been featured on the soundtracks for the independent films Last Ferry, At the Video Store and other independent features, while their music has been heard as the aforementioned theme song of the New York Times' podcast The Daily and writer Cheryl Strayed's Dear Sugar, as well as on Brunberg's award-winning podcast Roam Schooled.Jim Brunberg was a touring song and dance man for 12 years with the hugely successful rock/harmony/acoustic duo (and sometimes quintet) Box Set, touring with acts ranging from Dave Matthews to Huey Lewis, through the 90s. In 2000, Jim opened a recording studio, turning to the recording and composing world to satisfy his constant hunger for music. He produced and engineered dozens of records for many artists (Storm Large, Kristin Hersh, John Wesley Harding, and countless Portland-based bands) and released a few solo albums before converting the studios into a world-class music venue (Mississippi Studios). This spawned a few larger venues (Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall) where Jim personally built the stages, much of the seating and decor of a family of venues he still co-owns with his business partner Kevin Cradock. Currently, Jim is writing and recording/producing a tragic/comic German Opera, working with some of the classical musicians he has met over the past several years (mostly Oregon Symphony players). The work, "Das Blut" is a satirical, full-fledged production, entirely in German, that takes aim at the rise of a tyrant. It is a nuanced, but completely insurgent take on empathy, power, where our demons come from, and what they eat for dinner. He plans to debut this work, along with a new batch of songs, in 2025.Ben Landsverk is an American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Portland, OR, whose work focuses on social change through music. Hailed as a “prominent Portland composer” (Bloomberg Magazine) and “a unique musical talent” (Willamette Week), he is best known for his work as one half of the duo Wonderly, with musical partner Jim Brunberg. An active session musician, Landsverk has worked with such musical luminaries as Father John Misty, Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Van Dyke Parks, Storm Large, and Ruby Friedman Orchestra. From 2003-2015, he was a collaborator and music director with avant-garde performance artist Holcombe Waller and performed at such festivals as Under The Radar (NYC), Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Brazil), Queer Zagreb (Croatia), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Centre Pompidou (Metz and Paris, France). Landsverk is the founder and director of Portland's Low Bar Chorale and of Voices Unlimited, Portland's flagship choir for people with neurodiversity. He spent over 20 years as a professional choral director and singer, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Landsverk is currently working on his first solo album, scheduled for release in early 2025. *******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on SocSupport the show

Nearly ten years ago we got the news that Ben Darwish, composer, producer and keyboardist was moving from his Portland birthplace to Los Angeles. He had been a part of a flowering of young Jazz musicians, coming out of college in the early two thousands. The other part of the news was that he was going to be playing with a Pop band. He is with me now at the Artichoke Café because he's going to have his first Portland gig in eight years on Tuesday, November 21 at Mississippi Studios for an evening of what he calls “High energy Jazz.” Great news. We've got some story to fill in here.

Live music was hit hard by the pandemic. After managing years of cancellations, quick thinking and reimagining the live music experience, some are feeling hopeful as the summer festival season kicks off. But some fans haven’t returned, and inflation is taking a toll for concert goers and venue owners as well. Christina Fuller is the owner of Fuller Events and a festival director for the Waterfront Blues Festival which kicks off on July 1. Jim Brunberg is a musician, and the founder and co-owner of Mississippi Studios and Revolution Hall in Portland. They join us with a pulse check on the live event industry.

Organically gripping and raw, Hayley Lynn's sultry timbres extend through the various depths of her vocal range as she is soft-spoken but packs a punch when her lyrical motifs drop.Lynn's first body of work “Bring on the Flames,” co-created with producer Kyle Devine, was performed to several sold out shows across the Northwest as well as placement in the Netflix Original shows “The Pier” and “Money Heist.” Since then, Lynn's music has been placed on ABC, the 700 Club, and Big Ten Network, expanding Lynn's reach to international audiences. In addition to being a hometown favorite, Lynn is back on the road with breakthrough performances at festivals and venues such as Northwest Folklife, Oregon Country Fair, Winningstad Theater, Bloodworks Live Studio, Mississippi Studios, The Old Church Concert Hall, and touring through the U.S and Canada.Recently, Lynn released her first solo debut album ‘Horizon'. Many of the songs came as a means to heal. The pandemic was especially hard on artists and Lynn's method of survival was to dive deep into the layers of her life, the feelings that arose and the distractions she used to cope. The result is a velvet voice wrapped in an ocean of sound that is cathartic to lose ourselves in.https://www.hayleylynnmusic.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/3ustZQSFU19uRveWdTUeAdhttps://music.apple.com/us/artist/hayley-lynn/1374681637https://www.tiktok.com/@hayleylynnmusic?lang=enhttps://www.instagram.com/hayley_lynn_music/?hl=enhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqIuebsBOUfG6Kk-yeAtwIAhttps://www.facebook.com/HayleyLynnMusic/

We try not to bring our guests back too often, but in the case of Jim Brunberg, co-owner of Mississippi Studios, Revolution Hall, Polaris hall and point person in the fight to get federal and state money to our music venues…well you can understand. This one is solely about music and Jim is joined by Ben Landsverk, the other half the band they call Wonderly. They're having a CD release on Friday, March 18 at the Show Bar at Revolution Hall. The album is called Story We Tell and some of the songs have been available for quite a while. It's just that we haven't been available to be there with them and enjoy listening. Jim Brunberg is back with us in the Artichoke Music Café for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. His club, Mississippi Studios and concert venues, Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall are all open for live music. He's been a lynchpin for organizations launched during the Pandemic to get federal money in order to survive. He has kept us all informed along the way and that's why he's here today, to give us his reading on how things are going and what the future may hold. His group Wonderly, with Ben Landesverk also has a new album. We'll hear a tune from it at the end of our conversation. Welcome back Jim Brunberg
Alex is in Portland this week recording his debut comedy album (Saturday Oct. 2nd at Mississippi Studios) so the boys talked about what it takes to make a hit and keep the band together with Thomas The Hank Engine's directorial debut about a group of one-hit one-ders.
Just when we were thinking that tons of music was right around the corner we find out that there’s a ton of Federal money that could help venues….big and small…that isn’t being spent. Enter a new organization called Oregon Arts Recovery, OAR, that has arrived to help matters. Jim Brunberg, one of the leaders in our music industry, both as a musician himself and as a venue owner (Mississippi Studios and Revolution Hall) has been working non-stop for the past year to convince government that music and music venues are vital to the life of Oregonians. He’s with me on the phone with exciting news about a united front to help ensure that our venues survive and come back strong.
Many music venues have been devastated by the pandemic. And people have been without access to a lot of these important gathering places in their communities. But some have survived in spite of the odds. Our guests are Jim Brunberg, founder and co-owner of Mississippi Studios in Portland, and Angeline Rhett, owner of The Belfry in Sisters.
Today on The Local: Your Quick 6 news headlines. An in-depth look at the current water crisis in the Warm Springs Reservation with Amanda Squiemphen-Yazzie of Weavers of Unity. And, an interview with Jim Brunberg, of Mississippi Studios and Revolution Hall, on the recent support from the OR Legislature for arts organizations and venues.
Hello once again from not at Artichoke Music. Hopefully we’ll be back there when this is over. One of the busiest people during this thing who is not a first-responder is Jim Brunberg, who I’m sure you know is a musician and owner of Mississippi Studios, Revolution Hall etc etc etc. I thought that combination of things would make him the perfect person to talk to about the current situation where we find doors closed and musicians scrambling to find an income. He has been working on a new coalition of venue owners to try to keep them intact for when the music starts again. He’s been on the podcast before in better days. We’re thankful he took the time to talk to us.

“Sidney Poitier returned to the big screen in this action-thriller, after a decade-long absence. When a cunning murderer vanishes into the rugged mountains of the Pacific Northwest, pursuing FBI agent Warren Stantin (Poitier) must exchange familiar city streets for unknown wilderness trails. Completely out of his element, Stantin is forced to enlist the aid of expert tracker Jonathan Knox (PLATOON’S Tom Berenger). The killer has infiltrated a guided hiking trip led by Knox’s girlfriend Sarah (Kirstie Alley, at the height of her Cheers fame). Viewers don’t know which of the hikers is the killer, and the tension lasts well into the movie.” – (Donny Dollar /IMDB) This week's guest:Brooke Weeber is a Portland-based illustrator who brings whimsical, nature-based scenes to life. Her complex pieces combine animals with instruments, ribbons with clouds and always feature her iconic subtle color palate and playful aesthetic. Brooke finds her inspiration from various natural landscapes, her own life experiences as well as Folk art. She started drawing when she was a young thing, but started focusing on it in high school and later in college. After receiving her BFA in painting from the University of Oregon in 2003, Brooke flew her native Northwest for the big city, where she focused on her other passion – professional baking. She received a degree in Professional Pastry Baking at the French Culinary Institute of New York in 2005 and worked as a high-end cake decorator immediately. Craving more trees and more drawing space, Brooke packed up her apartment and re-rooted herself in Portland in 2009. She’s been cranking out pieces ever since and has had shows locally at Mississippi Studios, Compound Gallery, Pony Club, and Tribute Gallery. She sells prints and greeting cards featuring her art at local boutique shops and various places across the US, Canada and even Australia. ( The Little Canoe)

When the history of music at the turn of the century in Portland is written…IF it is ever written, they’ll write about someone who played a major role in it. His name is Jim Brunberg and he’s with me in World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th & Glisan for this OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. Number 170. There’s his own music, of course, and responsibility for Mississippi Studios, Revolution Hall, and a new venue Polaris Hall on North Killingsworth also the new Bar 101 at Revolution Hall. This time we live in is a feast of audio storytelling. You can find a podcast for any interest, from Harry Potter to stories of death-defying survival, and it turns out Oregon is a hotbed of homemade shows. In fact, several enterprising producers have joined forces to host the first-ever Portland Podcast Festival on Dec. 2 at the Hawthorne Theater. We’re taking this as an opportunity to talk to them about their shows, and to spotlight some more of our favorites made in Oregon. On this week’s episode:Minority Retort - 1:30Jason Lamb’s morning drive drops as part of the XRAY-FM feed feature conversations that reflect what’s going on in communities of color — often featuring stand-up artists Lamb’s met hosting the monthly “Minority Retort” comedy showcase. Funemployment Radio - 5:31Greg Nibler and Sarah X Dylan have chops honed by years in the trenches of terrestrial radio. But when they turned their powers to podcasting, freed from the constraints of 3-5 minute breaks, their creativity found a fifth gear. Voted Portland’s Best Podcast in the Willamette Week's 2016 and 2017 Readers’ Polls, Funemployment Radio tackles all kinds of subjects, but shines brightest on the weird stuff.Roam Schooled - 13:58Musician, sound engineer, and producer Jim Brunberg is best known to music fans around Portland as the founder and co-owner of two iconic venues: Mississippi Studios and Revolution Hall. But this side project, undertaken with his twin 8-year-old daughters, is an audio odyssey. Brunberg and the girls hit the road and interview everyone from the governor of Oregon to gun shop owners and Big Foot experts, as they explore big (and sometimes silly) issues, like death, the Second Amendment, fear, memory, and more, under the guiding principle: “Let’s go find out.” While the touchstone from each episode are questions from the girls, this podcast is one for the grown-ups.Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men - 23:34In 2014, Jay Edidin and Miles Stokes launched a grand experiment to tease out one of the most confusing — and compelling — storylines in comics: the saga of the X-Men, a group of outsider superheroes, mostly hated and feared by humanity. Taking on all the storylines, duplicate backstories, and alternate universe complications in order was no small task, but they ultimately took an even thornier storyline to unravel in their own lives. We love the podcast for their ultra-brainy takes and intensive research on the publishing history and the sheer glee they derive from Marvel’s intricate superhero soap-opera.Outside Podcast - 35:47Gorgeous production values and edge-of-your-seat storytelling are the hallmarks of this podcast offshoot from "Outside Magazine." Whether telling harrowing survival stories (getting cast adrift at sea, getting struck by lightening, getting treed by a jaguar, oh my!), interviewing extreme athletes of all stripes, or wandering far and wide with stories of the natural world, Portland-based Robbie Carver and Peter Frick-Wright are laser-focused on bringing each episode home with a slam-dunk narrative clinch.
We're back in World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. We like to have some of the people who run and/or own music venues in here from time to time. We’ve had Nicholas Harris from Jack London, Jim Brunberg from Mississippi Studios and Revolution Hall…and a few other folks. Today we have Michael Gibbons who owns Jo Bar and Papa Haydn. Jo Bar has music four or more times a week. And that’s where my full disclosure comes in. I DJ there on Saturday nights. Thing is, I’ve always thought Michael was a very interesting guy who would make a very interesting Coffeeshop Conversation. So let’s meet him.
Recorded live, Saturday, June 24th, 2017On this week's episode, the guys are live from Mississippi Studios in the gorgeous city of Portland! Taking a break from the beautiful world of recreational dispensaries, the fellas try to get to the bottom of: Why wasn't Paul Giamatti cast as Galactus? Why did they bother jamming Doctor Doom in this sequel? And would the Thing really be able to fly on a commercial airplane? PLUS: Remember on Friends when Ross had to murder his own monkey?Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer stars Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon, Kerry Washington, Andre Braugher, and Laurence Fishburne; directed by Tim Story.
In this episode we discuss good relationships, bad shits, and ugly lovers. Recorded live at Mississippi Studios, in Portland, OR! Brought to you by Spoke.
August 25, 2016 Welcome back to the Coffeeshop…World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan in Portland and another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation. Today Jim Brunberg, musician, music venue owner and now a podcaster with his twin seven-year-old daughters Vern and Dana. You know him from his music, from being one of the founders of Mississippi Studios and Revolution Hall. He’s a busy guy and we’re glad he took time to be here. His family podcast is called Roam Schooled, as he puts it, “a program about what happens when a father and his twin daughters put away their devices and go in search of answers.” We’ll find out all about that and where they’ve been, about the evolution of Mississippi studios which he helped build with his bare hands, and why on earth a person would start a major new venue! The tune at the end features Jim and Ben Landsverk as Wonderly.
We're digging deep this week into all of your burning questions. What does it take to craft gigantic puppets for Broadway? Does art history as we know it need a drastic makeover? And how exactly did a small record label in Vancouver, Wash. come across new music from Prince that has them in a battle with the Purple One's estate?Local Puppet Legend Michael Curry Conjures the Myth of Persephone with the Oregon Symphony - 1:24This weekend, the Oregon Symphony will wade into the wonderful world of puppets with a production of "Persephone" (May 13–15). For the first time, it’s collaborating with Michael Curry, the puppet master behind the animals in the Broadway production of "The Lion King," as well as Olympic opening ceremonies and other massive events. OPB's Molly Solomon takes us to Curry’s massive warehouse in Scappoose, Oregon to see his magical operations.Shaking Up The Classics at Oregon Shakespeare Festival - 3:30For our money, the hottest ticket at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this spring is a show with an ancient story: “Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles,” which runs through July 6. It’s a retelling of Euripides’ classic tale of a princess witch who’s followed her lover into exile in a foreign land. When he rejects her, she kills her own children in an act of vengeance. Adapted by the MacArthur-winning playwright Luis Alfaro, “Mojada” reforms the classic Greek tale into a story about Mexican immigrants trying to make it in Los Angeles.World Premiered Play Asks: Is the American Dream All It's Cracked Up to Be? - 10:21Seattle-based playwright Yussef El Guindi scandalized Portland, in a good way, with the world premiere of his play “Threesome” at Portland Center Stage in 2015. It’s about a Muslim couple’s failed attempt to invite a non-Muslim into their bed, but there’s a lot more going on in the show than pillow talk. El Guindi returns to the dynamics of a troubled immigrant couple with his new play, “The Talented Ones,” which is getting its world premiere at Portland’s Artists Repertory Theater through May 21. How Did Vancouver Become the Center of a Fight over Prince's Music? - 17:42Last month, when a Minnesota judge halted the release of an album featuring six previously unreleased songs from the late artist Prince, something caught our eye. The record label in the middle of the legal battle was a largely unknown company from Vancouver, Washington called Rogue Music Alliance. Before a federal judge halted its release, the EP, “Deliverance,” was the top selling pre-order on iTunes, with the single “Deliverance” hitting the No. 1 rock single spot. The Fallen Heroes of Comic Book Writer Chris Sebela - 23:16Chris Sebela’s comic “Heartthrob” is the furthest thing from a romance novel. With art by Robert Wilson, “Heartthrob” tells the story of a woman who gets a heart transplant that not only saves her life, but throws her into a chaotic affair with the man who originally housed the heart — or at least his specter. Turns out he was a criminal and wants her to carry on some unfinished heists. Turns out, Sebela has a thing for heroes with flaws, from the disgraced snowboard at the center of his hit graphic novel “High Crimes,” to the out-of-work movie monsters in "Screamland."opbmusic Session with Kelli Schaefer - 32:27Portland songwriter Kelli Schaefer crafts ghostly rock songs that explore themes of capitalism and mortality — songs that're spurred by a big, dark voice that’s drawn comparisons to PJ Harvey. Her new album, “No Identity,” is a loosely-organized concept album following a family’s run-ins with tragedy and the mundane. Schaefer will perform at Mississippi Studios on May 16. Want a taste? Check out videos of her opbmusic session. Why Everything You Need to Know You Did NOT Learn in Art History - 39:10A little while ago, we had on the writer, artist, and art activist Jennifer Rabin to talk about two projects she's behind: Artists Resist and Art Passport PDX. But the original reason we contacted her was to talk about an article she wrote for "Willamette Week" about the "Constructing Identities" exhibition at the Portland Art Museum. She wrote that her education in art history left her woefully unprepared to write about a show by African-American artists — or any underrepresented artist for that matter. So for our latest installment in our "What Are You Looking At?" series, we invited her to walk through the show with us.
Can Ages and Ages make songs about earthquakes and the end of civilization fun? Yes, yes they can.No one can deny that the band Ages and Ages is infectious. All those hand claps and group harmonies have made songs like "No Nostalgia" and "Do the Right Thing" total NPR ear worms. But the band has changed tack on their new album, “Something to Ruin.” The music is just as infectious, but the subject matter has become much more topical, dealing with issues of booming real estate, mass consumerism, and, well, the impending Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. They played an exclusive preview of the music and talked about how the end of civilization could be a good thing.Stay tuned for videos of their performance on opbmusic on Aug. 31. And catch them live at their Sept. 3 record release show at Mississippi Studios.

___________________________________________________________________________ We’ve been fans of AgesandAges for a little while now (as well as frontman Tim Perry’s previous band Pseudosix) and are excited to have them stop in on the intraffikradio.com studios during their current West Coast Tour. They’re probably one of the only bands we’ve heard capable of pulling off such wonderful 7 part harmonies without sounding like a church choir or a glee club throughout their well-crafted songs. *Please note that this interview originally aired last Wednesday prior to their Spaceland/The Satellite show (w/ fellow Portland bands Typhoon and Brainstorm) so please ignore the constant mentions of that show as it has already occurred. We discussed (among many other topics): their current tour, their show that was occurring that night with fellow Oregon based tour mates Typhoon and Brainstorm (presented by JaxArt at Spaceland/The Satellite ), their forthcoming debut album Alright, You Restless (available 2/18 via Knitting Factory Records), recording the album in 8 days with producer Kevin Robinson (who you may know as one half of Viva Voce), the Portland music scene, their thoughts on Portlandia, What they did on their day off from touring, and much more! They also braved our technical set-up and performed three live tracks on-air (on-web?) to give you a preview of their live shows and their forthcoming album. Those songs were: “These Elbows” “No Nostalgia” “Under a Cloud Shaped Like a Tomb” And believe us, they are even better in person. So, if you’re near somewhere that they might be playing definitely go catch them, we highly recommend it! If you’re near Portland, their official CD Release Party occurs on Feb. 11th at Mississippi Studios w/ Billygoat and Arch Cape. If you’re not, then you’ll have a chance to catch them at SXSW, and also when they hit the road again this time for a month long tour in April with the band Lake.
