Sea Hags, and Iron Maiden plus new Def Leppard, Ghost, Jorn and more! Busting at the seams
This episode of the It's A Mimic! podcast focuses on one of the most popular Big Bad Evil Guys at Wizards of the Coast: Hags. They've been lurking around in a handful of published adventures, and there is a surprising amount of lore and information about them in 5th Edition. Enough, in fact, that the panel of Dungeon Masters had to break it all out into multiple episodes. This one focuses on the true OG's (that stands for Old Girls) which are the Green Hags. This episode also dives into the murky waters of Sea Hags and Sea Furies, and the nightmares that they bring. On this week's show, Bree and Justin attempt to clean out the listener mailbag before the year closes out. It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so. Show notes: Intro What's going on with World of Warcraft? What's MOP's financial status like? What about a Warframe column? What MMO music did Justin like most this year? What has MOP learned about community wrangling? What's the big deal about lockboxes? Do MMO sunsets have a silver lining? Why can't dungeon parties slow down? Have we heard of LitRPG novels? No guest for this very special (hah! it’s not) halloween episode; we talk costumes past and present, candy rankings, and Babadooks on ecstasy. Commercials that we thought we dreamed up turn out to be real, so do what you will, but don’t rattle me bones!
Since we love nothing so much as arbitrary milestones, let’s call this episode the 2nd anniversary of the creation myth of the Sea Hags. We recount some adventures in the ride-or-die aspect of our relationship, the vulnerability factor of different art forms, and what pure joy it would be to give up and swathe ourselves forever in Costco-exclusive apparel. Bring in Mr. Kirkland to put his signature on the dotted line.
Man of lascivious vintage tastes–and now a man of letters–nearly-Dr. Justin O’Hearn returns to the podcast with a butane torch and an attitude. JK, he’s super sweet and perfect, and we have a wonderful afternoon gab about the Great British Bake Off, Back to the Future, and the aquatic propulsion of scallops. In a first for the Sea Hags, we have dessert made for us live in the studio, and then we eat it, which is not great for the audio medium. Enjoy!
If this were a more visual medium, you might be seeing double, because this week’s guest is Katie’s identical comedy twin (not really) - Jackie Hoffart! She joins us for a Sea Hags after dark special when we meet late on a Sunday to discuss the queerer side of life with every stereotype joyfully represented. That’s right, cat family, sperm banks, softball, drag, and responsible political engagement. Hold on to your Tevas!
No guest this week while we round up our year in the life of our podcast. The very essence of the Sea Hags comes through as two best buds love up one another, muse about life, and examine our goals versus what we’ve actually managed to commit to digital paper–not doing too bad! Much love to everyone who has supported us, listened, reviewed, etc. over the previous year! Muah!
lThis week marks one year since we began releasing episodes of Sea Hags, and we are absolutely thrilled to bring you this episode with one of Vancouver’s very favourite comics: Mr. Graham Clark! Graham hustles Chris out of her heirloom jewelery, we realize our studio is basically an opium den, and we proceed to get a good jump on solving all the world’s problems like drugs, politics and world hunger. Of course, we have to talk comedy, and Graham provides some very simple (yet so hard to internalize!) wisdom. We’ve got it good in this city, and this chat surely proves that he’s part of a reason this scene is so special.
At long last, we have the chanteuse behind our Sea Hags theme song, it’s Hilary McNaughton on the pod! She shares some of her wisdom about life, love, community, and oh-so-many EMOTIONS. We talk body shapes, fancy bras, the wonders of Model Express, and we enjoy secret candy out of a toque.
The Sea Hags pride themselves on the ability to forge deep connections wherever they may be, and with that in mind, this week, we welcome the lovely Calvin Scott, a sweet American gent that Chris met in 2013, singing in a park in Edinburgh. Calvin is over six and a half feet of beautiful harp-playing charm, and we are so fortunate to sit surrounded by his good vibes, talking into your ears. In this episode, we discuss the ups and downs of unlimited recording space and high-quality portable recorders (the memories! the shame!), fighting geese, eating ducks, world travel, with every conversation transition marked with an incredibly unnecessary harp glissado (thanks, Katie).
Since so many of the visitors to the Sea Hags shack are musically inclined, we’ve decided to start recording bonus content we’re calling the Siren Song Sessions. The first of these is with the lovely Orit Shimoni. There is, first up, an original song by our own Chris Rzepa, and then two from Orit’s catalogue. We hope you enjoy!
