Everyway you turn someone wants to rip you off. Whether its congestion or other charges attacking the motorist. Starmer fining you for hurty words or smoking outisde a pub. Or Labour stealing the Winter Fuel allowance off pensioners. How about Holiday companies whacking up prices when the Kids are on school holidays! Decent ordinary working Brits are just treated as a cash cow. So we shouldnt be surprised that the two Manc Chancers ripped off their fans with so called demand charging. These two are as bad as the budget airlines who whack up the price once you first logon. They disgust me! Working Class Heroes my ass!
Today we think of Luddites as people who don't know how to use technology or are maybe even afraid of it. That's pretty far from what the original Luddites were all about. They were the first workers to fight for fair treatment. They were not successful.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Part one of the working-class heroes looks at the story from the eyes of the working class, also known in different times as the middle class, the hard workers that have reaped the reward from their fruit. This may have been true years ago, but where does it lead us now as people were so divided in classes feeling almost indifferent we are trapped and unable to escape this structure. So today, we have a special guest Dan who will explain in-depth how the system has been designed against us and not for us as we are supposed to be belive, so with the help of Dan, let us take the journey of working-class heroes. If you would like to learn more about Dan's work and to find his book click on the links below: Dan McCrory's social links:
Part two of working-class heroes takes a closer look at the non-profits and organizations trying to make a difference in their communities and how much is the founders and the fighter of these non-profits being given are they given an equal chance to make a difference in their rights. This week Elaine chats with the inspirational Valerie Edmond. We cover so much in today's episode. Everything from the outdated views on the physical appearance of actresses, to knowing your worth in an industry that doesn't always encourage you to value your own time and effort to embracing and loving where you come from. As well as the importance of being an artist and remembering to always say exactly what you are. An uplifting, inspiring beautiful episode from a immensely talented, gifted and giving human. VALERIE EDMOND Valerie is an award-winning actress who began her life in a single end tenement in Springburn, Glasgow before moving to a council estate in Balornock - built in the shadow of The Red Road Flats. To escape break time bullying at her secondary school an English teacher gave Valerie the keys to a long forgotten drama studio and there, using a torch to see, she stepped from darkness into the technicolour world of William Shakespeare, Robert Burns, Christina Rosetti and Edwin Morgan. Valerie became the youngest person to ever attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Conservatoire) set up her own theatre company on leaving, and has gone on to work with Stephen Frears, Gavin Millar, Vadim Jean, Daniel Craig, Greta Scacchi, David Harewood Peter Capaldi and Brian Cox amongst others, winning nominations and awards for her performances on film and television. She also uses her voice - currently narrating a series of award-winning campaigns promoting health throughout Scotland for the Scottish Government, the BBC and remains a key worker throughout COVID-19 for services to broadcasting. In 2020, when Covid prevented the Scottish Legion/Poppy Scotland from collecting funds, Valerie approached the barracks of Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish War Memorial Monument and read the battalion names of those who died for Scotland in WW2 as the sun came up. Remembrance Sunday Like Elaine, Valerie Edmond is a founder member of the Class Network for Equity, a curator of the ‘Who's Afraid of the Working Class” event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, an award-winning actor, producer, and author currently writing, Working Class Heroes in the Performing Arts - A Handbook. She has appeared in Outlander, Succession and Lessons of the Hour- Fredrick Douglass - a ten screen immersive film installation by artist Isaac Julien currently showing around the world and last month on the giant Piccadilly Circus screens in central London. Still raising her children, Valerie returns to an industry mired in controversy and has switched on her torch once more, campaigning for ERA, speaking in Parliament on behalf of Equity, The Musician's Union and the Writer's Guild to support working class portrayal, content and representation across all platforms in the arts finding ways to shine a light for those who would otherwise stay in the dark.
Working class heroes and poets Serie Barford and Glenn Colquhoun celebrate their working class roots as part of the Going West Oblivion Express as it steams to Helensville Station. Passengers along for the ride were entertained and charmed by this witty pairing of two of New Zealand's finest performance poets. It is pure working class gold, sprinkled with a West Auckland flavour, as they celebrate their whānau, friends, and community with poems about ceramic swans, the knicker factory, bullrush, and bog filled cars, grapevines and the alchemy of Assid Corban's orchids. Both Barford and Colquhoun are long-time friends of the Going West Writers Festival and have been regular guests throughout the years. Serie Barford is a poet and short fiction writer of European and Polynesian descent, with a background in performance poetry. She has published four poetry collections: Plea to the Spanish Lady (Hard Echo Press, 1985), Glass Canisters (Hard Echo Press, 1989), Tapa Talk (Huia, 2007), and Entangled Islands (Anahera Press, 2015). Her work is also published in multiple journals and anthologies. Glenn Colquhoun is a doctor, and an award-winning poet and children's writer. His first collection The Art of Walking Upright (Steele Roberts, 1999) won the Jessie Mackay Best First Book of Poetry award at the Montana Book Awards (2000). Playing God (Hammersmith Press, 2002), his third collection, won the poetry section of the same awards in 2003, as well as the Readers' Choice Award that year. His latest book Late Love, (Bridget Williams Books, 2016) is an adaptation of a speech given at the APAC health conference in 2013, outlining the relationship in his life between poetry and medicine.

Alex Rush is a 15-year-old from Rochdale. He believes the media negatively stereotypes young working class lads like him but he’s passionate about making positive change in his community. Alex is a young activist with Manchester-based Reclaim, a youth leadership and social change organisation that supports working-class young people. Alex shares how the pandemic has impacted him as a working class young person. Soccer is an inexpensive sport. It doesn't require much to get started. We often get lost in today's astronomical transfer fees and big money TV deals. We sometimes forget the working-class heroes.
In conversation with Ashley Fox, Writer. Speaker. Entrepreneur. Athlete. Mom. ESPN alumna. In 2012, Maria Kefalas's daughter, Calliope, was diagnosed with a rare, degenerative, and incurable genetic disease called metachromatic leukodystrophy. Rather than succumbing to grief, Kefalas and her husband harnessed this powerful emotion in order to save other children and, ultimately, themselves. What followed was an incredible odyssey that included a fundraising bake sale of more than 50,000 cupcakes, a blog that blossomed into articles published in the likes of Slate and the Huffington Post, two groundbreaking charitable foundations, and advocacy in America's loftiest halls of power. Harnessing Grief maps this journey and how it affected 13 other families with similarly afflicted children. A sociology professor at Saint Joseph's University, Kefalas is also the author of the books Hollowing Out the Middle, Working-Class Heroes, and Promises I Can Keep. Books may be purchased through the Joseph Fox Bookshop (recorded 2/16/2021)
On this week's show of Working Class Heroes radio, we speak with Prakash Churaman, the young Guyanese immigrant from Queens who spent 6 years incarcerated without a fair trial. Now that Prakash is out on bail, Julian Guerrero asks him about his experience with the criminal justice system, how he's coping with being back home and what his struggle for freedom from the Queens District Attorney's grip might entail. Lupita Romero and Mel Gonzalez host the show, lay out our latest headlines, and break down the issue of pre-trial detainment in New York City's criminal justice system with the help of Carl Hamad-Lipscombe, director of advocacy and policy at the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund. Outro song - Sorrow, Tears and Blood - Ari Lennox GoldLink *Minor Correction* - the Prisoner's Rights activist, David Rothenberg's last name, was mispronounced.

Hello Capital Region! This is the Hudson Mohawk Magazine on WOOC-LP 105.3 FM Troy and WOOS-LP 98.9 FM Schenectady broadcasting from The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY. Today’s show is a bit different from our normal programming. In honor of the federal holiday celebrated to recognize the Labor movement, and to honor the contributions of laborers, and their unions, this show has been curated by HMM Roaming Labor Correspondent Willie Terry. We have four stories from the labor movement, beginning with the 2019 James Connelly Forum, “Working Class Heroes.” Then, we look back on the 2018 Capital Region Solidarity committee annual labor day picnic and celebration. After that, Erin Blanc, author of Red State Revolt, discusses the teacher’s strike wave and working class politics, from a forum hosted by the Democratic Socialist of America in May of 2019. And we close out the show with the 2020 Black history month program, “Year of Return: A celebration of African Ancestry,” with remarks from Terry Melvin, President of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists.

YCCB continues its review of the economic life of composers and musicians. We look at Bizet who struggled financially most of his life and even was a music transcriber to support himself. Sadly for him, the popularity of his music came after his passing. Brahms made a good living from his piano performances, perhaps because he composed music that he could master. We delve into Brahms relationship with the Schumanns and find out that Robert Schumann edited a newspaper to pay the bills. And Borodin had to choose between being a chemist or composer. He chose to become a chemist! Mr. Herron regrets his error in stating that the song "Tonight We Love" was based on Borodin's music. It was taken from Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto #1. contact the show at yccb@mauriceriverpress.com

Cinema Curator Mark Cosgrove and Cinema Producer Tara Judah share their highlights and must see films this September at Watershed. They discuss the absorbing and sometimes confounding blurring of fact and fiction in three fantastic new films - The Rider, Skate Kitchen and Matangi/Maya/MIA. Enfant terrible and arch provocateur Gaspar Noe's new film Climax takes Mark completely by surprise, despite his low expectations, whilst Tara continues to revel in the singular vision of Agnes Varda's new film Faces Places, in which Varda embarks on a road trip like no other, to examine what it takes to make a meaningful piece of art.A season of films – Working Class Heroes – still provides much food for thought 50 years after their original release, with some of the most dynamic, subversive and radical films you could hope to see. And finally there is Pawel Pawlikowski's extraordinary Cold War which Mark and Tara already predict will be one of the films of the year, if not the decade.
This week we turn the tables on one of our co-hosts and interview Danny about his latest book, Why Bad Governments Happen to Good People, published by Haymarket Books. Danny talks about how Trump’s election shows the way U.S. democracy tilts rightward, blocking the moderate social democratic platform of Bernie Sanders while allowing an erratic racist who flirts with fascists to assume the most world’s most powerful position. From there we get into the larger contradictions of democracy and capitalism, and how in many ways democracy under capitalism is less about empowering the people than winning our consent to the way things are going to be. We then move on to the exciting success of socialist candidates since Bernie’s campaign, most notably Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s primary victory in New York City. Danny talks about the way some of these campaigns have helped to popularize demands of Medicare for all and Abolish ICE, but also about the historic dangers socialists face when they start building their project inside a Democratic Party that is ultimately hostile to our interests. In our opener, we talk with Bay Area socialist Ragina Johnson about the horrific murder of Nia Wilson in Oakland and why so many people in the Bay are connecting her death with the growth of white supremacy in Trump’s America. She describes protest that took place on one day’s notice in response to the murder—which linked up with another protest against a plan by the far-right Proud Boys to meet up in a downtown Oakland bar. Ragina put Nia’s death and the rise of the far right in the context of continued police murders, relentless gentrification and the overall state of rising inequality and scapegoating—and stressed the importance of building the largest possible protest against the far right’s “No to Marxism” rally on August 5 in Berkeley. We encourage Better Off Red listeners to come out against the fascists that day—and those on the East Coast to join the mobilization against the disgusting “White Civil Rights” rally being held in Washington D.C. on August 12—the anniversary of last year’s horror in Charlottesville. American tall tales are an odd branch of the folkloric family tree. Younger than fairy tales, but older than urban legends; they seem to have descended into a kind of awkward adolescence around the end of WWII. Yes, they’re stuck at the kids’ table within the collective unconscious, and they totally don’t get their younger cousins’ pop culture references. How did this happen? Who decided we needed tall tales in the first place? What has become of American Mythology today? Join us this week as we set out on a mission to define the American character, and when we are done; we’re going to Disneyland. He joins this edition of Colchonero Chat to reflect upon Atlético Madrid’s latest draw — this time against Qarabag in the Champions League group stage. Robbie and site manager Jeremy Beren debate why Atlético couldn’t get off the ground in their 0-0 draw at Qarabag on Wednesday and wonder if Atleti will now miss out on knockout stages qualification. They also discuss the increasingly stop-start nature of Atleti’s evolution from a defensive side into a proactive attacking outfit — and they ask if Diego Simeone and his players will ever take the next step under his management. The podders also preview Atlético’s game against Celta on Sunday and talk about “Working Class Heroes”, Robbie’s new book on Rayo Vallecano.
