Rowan RobertsonAt age 17, guitarist Rowan Robertson was hired by Ronnie James Dio to record the “Lock Up the Wolves” album and tour the world. His first gig was opening for Metallica, but his grand entrance was straight out of “Spinal Tap!” He joins us to discuss his time with Dio, his subsequent bands Violet's Demise (featuring singer Oni Logan), DC4 and Bang Tango. We also learn the importance of his father's and friends' unwavering belief, his current gig in the all-star Vegas production, Raiding the Rock Vault, and why Jimmy Bain endearingly called him “Mr. Vomit.”Created and Produced by Jared Tuten

This week we talk about songs and albums by artists that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happened when bands that had success in the 80s attempted to follow trends and remain relevant in the 1990s. Listen in as we discuss the varying degrees to which this worked, or where we had to ask, “What were they thinking?”What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. The decade of the 90s was such a polarizing time for older bands that were still trying to remain relevant. In our latest foray into the electrified terrain of 80s metal, "Dig Me Out" turns the spotlight on an album that encapsulates the era's tumultuous shift from the glitzy heights of hair metal to the gritty dawn of grunge: Bang Tango's "Psycho Cafe." This episode isn't just a deep dive; it's a time machine back to an age where rock music teetered on the edge of a revolution, and Bang Tango danced along that razor's edge with a blend of hard rock, funk, and a hint of goth."Psycho Cafe" stands out not just for its musicality but for embodying the late 80s' clash of genres. With tracks like "Someone Like You" and "Attack of Life," we explore how Bang Tango's debut album defied easy categorization, weaving together a sound that was as unique as it was indicative of the era's broader trends. But was this fusion of styles a stroke of genius or a band ahead of its time? We dissect the innovative use of funky rhythms by bassist Kyle Kyle, a move that set them apart but also posed challenges in a landscape dominated by the hair metal aesthetic.Beyond the music, "Psycho Cafe" is a lens through which we examine the band's rollercoaster history. From the charismatic frontman Joe LeSte to the ever-evolving lineup, Bang Tango's story is as compelling as their music. Yet, their visual and stylistic choices perhaps most vividly capture the late 80s scene, blending rock's raw energy with a touch of glam. But did this aesthetic help or hinder their legacy in an era defined by its visuals as much as its soundtracks? In sharing our connections to the album, we aim not just to analyze but to connect, bridging the gap between historical context and personal resonance. "Psycho Cafe" isn't just a collection of tracks; for many, it's a soundtrack to memories, a piece of youth locked in the grooves of a vinyl or the magnetic tape of a cassette. As we wrap up our exploration of "Psycho Cafe," we're left pondering the what-ifs. What if Bang Tango had hit the scene earlier or rode the wave into the alternative-dominated 90s? Would they have found a more receptive audience, or was their unique blend of genres always destined to stand out?Join us in this episode as we tackle these questions and more, offering our main takes on an album that dared to be different. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to the band, we invite you to dive into the discussion. Did Bang Tango capture the spirit of the late 80s, or were they a band out of time? Please share your thoughts and join the conversation as we revisit an era where rock was about breaking the mold and turning up the volume.Songs In This EpisodeIntro - Someone Like You23:58 - Someone Like You24:25 - Someone Like You25:07 - Attack of Life27:24 - Don't Stop Now28:13 - Wrap My Wings29:29 - Do What You're Told31:03 - Love Injection36:46 - Shotgun Man38:21 - Sweet Little Razor41:18 - Just For You1:00:56 - Breaking Up a Heart of StoneMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. This week, we continue our day-by-day, gig-by-gig recap of Night Demon's fall 2022 Year of the Demon Tour. The story resumes in Karlsruhe, Germany, at the same venue where the band filmed their "Heavy Metal Heat" official video back in 2015. As usual, the boys provide behind-the-scenes details of the gig, plus interviews with fans and live clips from the show, as well as anecdotes about a hotel featuring taxidermy and a treehouse. The next day in Lichtenfels, Night Demon played a small, narrow, packed and sweaty gig at an Irish pub for metal in Germany, with a most unusual setlist featuring covers you've probably never heard them play. Listen in to hear clips in all their unpolished glory. We round out this episode with coverage of the Vienna gig at the Escape Metal Corner venue, where the band played a killer set and interviewed some extremely dedicated fans.Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. After a short hiatus, the Sadmen are back with the latest instalment of the Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Hall of Fame - an ongoing mission to create the definitive best-to-worst list of hard rock, heavy metal and prog released between 1970(ish) and 1995(ish). The Hall of Fame unique's selling point is the fact that each and every track on each and every album is marked individually, with the averages of those scores calculated to give the album as a whole an overall score - often to 5 decimal places. And because the boys each have different tastes - Steve likes his metal delivered at pace, Richard is the professorial wise head with a penchant for prog, and Mark is a simple man who's happy with a big fat riff and a glorious hookline - each is a check and balance to the others' hyperbole. For this edition of the show the Tico Torres Tombola of Topics and Themes threw out the year 1989, setting the lads the task of finding three albums released during that year worthy of being pulled apart. Welcome, then, W.A.S.P.'s The Headless Children, Bang Tango's Psycho Cafe, and Faith No More's genre defining The Real Thing. Let the arguments commence.
Stephen Shareaux (Kik Tracee, Zen From Mars) discusses his project, Zen From Mars featuring Drew Fortier (The Lucid, Bang Tango) & Chip Z'Nuff (Enuff Z'Nuff) and their latest record Inner mission, his time in Kik Tracee, his audition for Motley Crue, Velvet Revolver and Stone Temple Pilots as well as the potential for a Kik Tracee reunion plus much more! The year 1989 gave us some amazing debut records from bands like Skid Row, Bang Tango and Extreme just to name a few. We also saw the debut record from a band from Sweden called Shotgun Messiah. Shotgun Messiah was led by singer Zinny Zan and quickly made a name for themselves with MTV hits such as Don't Care About Nothing and Shout It Out. Shotgun Messiah was short lived as Zinny Zan left the band a year later. Fast forward 30 some years and Zinny now has a new record coming out called "Lullabies for the masses" and new single called "Heartbreak City" which is out now! I had the chance to sit down with Zinny and discuss all of this and more on this episode of the Rock N Roll & Coffee Show. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rnrcoffeeshow/support

For many musicians, separating themselves from their past is nearly impossible, especially when the past includes a successful career as a founding member of an 80's funk metal band like Bang Tango. The old hits and looks are almost inseparable from their current art, despite the clear differences and the years in between. Many become stuck in a limbo of who they were and who they want to be, but Mark Knight has only been spurred on by the challenges of what's in his rearview mirror and who he is now as an artist. In 2013's Road Sick Eyes, Knight smashed through the glass ceiling of his past and unabashedly displayed his frustration with his former image and triumphantly revealed himself to be a roots rock, Americana singer, songwriter, and guitarist to be reckoned with. Now, with the success of Road Sick Eyes, several other solo efforts and a divorce under his belt, two teenage daughters, and life being rebuilt in progress, Mark Knight finds Knight presenting an album; a unified collection of stories more daring and personal than ever before. All songs were composed solely by Knight, who also played most of the guitars, both acoustic and electric, on the record.Mark Knight is filled with wrenching solo acoustic songs and Knight's signature roots rockers featuring his longtime collaborators including Matt Abts of Gov't Mule and Planet of the Abts, Tony Marsico on bass, Mark Tremalgia (formerly of Bang Tango) on guitar, Reeve Downes of Rhino Bucket on bass and Tigg Ketler (formerly of Bang Tango) on drums. Mark Knight was produced by Tom Lavin, who also produced Road Sick Eyes, and recorded swiftly in a private studio in which “raw” remained the battle cry. Knight approached the record with a desire for rawness and simplicity, creating a gripping, unflinching account of his trials and tribulations. He doesn't cheat himself or his audience with the raw emotion, doubts, courage, and honesty he displays.“Since Road Sick Eyes, my life has changed dramatically and those personal challenges and triumphs naturally came out in the music,” says Knight. “I wanted to be honest with and about myself and uncompromising, even if I had to lay myself on the line.”Knight's time has come to grow into himself as a songwriter and musician, and in listening to Knight's growth, we also hear ourselves, reflect on the years and feel the innate desire to stretch out of our own skins.

From 1968 to 1973, the public television variety show SOUL!, guided by the enigmatic producer and host Ellis Haizlip, offered an unfiltered, uncompromising celebration of Black literature, poetry, music, and politics—voices that had few other options for national exposure, and, as a result, found the program an improbable place to call home. The series was among the first to provide expanded images of African Americans on television, shifting the gaze from inner-city poverty and violence to the vibrancy of the Black Arts Movement. With participants' recollections and illuminating archival clips, Mr. SOUL! captures a critical moment in culture whose impact continues to resonate, and an unsung hero whose voice we need now more than ever to restore the SOUL of a nation.
