Happy Podcast day, one and all!  Welcome to back to The Big Year Podcast.  Thank you once again for joining me.   It's April 15, 2025 and spring migration is well underway here in southwestern Ontario.  It's actually a bit of a miracle that I finished this episode on time because the last 2 weeks have been very busy for me and my fellow birders.  It started with a Western Grebe in Port Credit, a Black-headed Gull, at Port Colborne, followed by a Long-billed Dowitcher right here in Brant County.  The fun continued with over 50 American White Pelicans at Holiday Beach and a female Harlequin Duck down in Chatham-Kent.  I also go my first Ruffed Grouse and Common Loon for Brant County, but the real excitement was the chase for a Crested Caracara in Essex County, not too far from the Ontario/Michigan boarder, on April 7.   Dozens of birders flocked to the small town of Amherstburg for a once in a lifetime look at this large falcon that lost its way.  This bird should have been in Texas, and after a long day of searching seemed to have returned home.  I had then tried for a Yellow-headed Blackbird back in Chatham, but near blizzard conditions sent me home to contemplate missed opportunities.  However, on Wednesday the weather was nice again, so I decided to go back and look for the Yellow-headed Blackbird.  To my complete surprise, before I even arrived at McGeachy Pond, I was alerted to the return of the caracara, not in Amherstburg, but right there in Chatham, only 15 minutes from where I was parked at the side of the road.   Talk about being in the right place at the right time.  I drove, I saw, I counted a new Canada Lifer!  And I got to spend time with some of my favourite birding friends, including Kelly Sue, who you met on season one of the podcast.  She lived only 5 minutes away.  And yesterday we had another rare bird party as dozens of us migrated to Stoney Creek for a rare spring sighting of a Loggerhead Shrike.  And all through that I was trying to find time to finish this podcast.  Not only that, it's the onset of allergy season and my head feels like it's full of teddy bear stuffing.  Today's episode features Robert Gundy and Natasza Fontaine.  Robert is a biologist and Natasza was the 2024 ABA Bird of the Year Artist, painting the Golden-winged Warbler.  And they both completed a record setting (Covid)Florida Big Year in 2020.

To say that Claire Sinclair is  generous with her time, is an understatement.  She's been a teacher for decades.   And currently she's  teaching kindergarten in the same classroom at the same elementary school she attended.    What's interesting about how our conversation began is that both Claire and her mother  attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ and both women married their high school sweethearts, just decades apart.Claire shares stories of the similarities of she and her mom and how much it means to her that so many people from her community still hold her mother close to their heart. Claire's mother, 'Ellie,'  was known as "The Duck Lady" in Maplewood/South Orange NJ. What she started many years ago as a simple race in a brook with plastic ducks has grown to raising tens of thousands of dollars annually for different organizations that help and support kids, ie Kiwanis, Scouts, YMCA, etc. Ellie's mom, Claire's maternal grandmother,  passed away when Ellie was in her 20's. When Ellie's father remarried, there was no real love between she and her step mother so she moved in with one of her favorite aunts, Aunt Fay, her birth mother's sister, who ran a preschool out of her home. Ellie had interests in nursing and/or becoming a teacher but her career was cut short when it was time to start a family. Claire says "she likes to dabble in a little bit of everything, just like her mom."  Claire is involved in community awareness when it comes to food insecure families. She volunteers regularly at local food pantries distributing food as well as keeping her young students involved by organizing can drives at the elementary school. As a board member for MEND, Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity, located throughout Essex County, NJ, Claire regularly sees families in need of help and like her mom, it's hard for her to say no to helping others.Claire is the administrator of a Facebook Group, 'Habitual Gratitude 365' where she shares daily prompts of things that her multitude of followers are grateful for. Again, like her mom, and as a mother, she loves to help others in need.Claire's mother passed away in 2013 but she's left an imprint on the community.  Claire was lucky enough to have one last phone call from her mom and she's so happy that she picked up that call.Claire also has a  park bench in Maplewood Memorial Park, which was dedicated to her mother, by the community, nestled nicely right beside the brook where Ellie started her very first Memorial Day 'Duck Race.' That's where Claire goes on a regular basis to feel her mother's support, love and guidance.Claire Sinclair's Recent book:The Mice Wo Came to Story TimeFacebook Page:Habitual Gratitude 365, Claire Gianni SinclairLinkedIn: Claire SinclairInstagram: clairesinclair, clairesinclairwrites, habitualgratitudeX:Claire Sinclair, MrsSinclairK123, project4kindBleusky:Clairesinclair SHLTMM YOUTUBE CHANNEL: You can now listen to my podcasts on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoUWxgQECqrMqI1ylVH9Dpw         "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Access to funding is essential for fostering opportunities and independence for individuals with developmental disabilities. Unfortunately, the provincial government is falling short in providing these vital resources, in Ontario.   **Severe Funding Shortfalls Impacting People with Developmental Disabilities**   Over 52,000 individuals are currently on waiting lists for critical supports and services due to significant funding shortfalls in the sector. Since 1993, the Ontario government has increased core funding to support agencies by less than 7%, while the cost of living has surged by over 60% in that same period. Developmental services agencies across the province, including those in Essex County, are expressing that the system is no longer sustainable.   These services are not luxuries; they are lifelines that assist people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in their daily activities. They enable individuals to live and work in their communities while providing much-needed support and respite for their families. Supportive services include teaching basic life skills, helping with medications and appointments, and assisting individuals in finding homes, jobs, and community activities, allowing them to truly belong.   The "Journey to Belonging: Choice and Inclusion," initiated under Minister Todd Smith in 2020, is a ten-year initiative aimed at empowering people with developmental disabilities to gain more control and opportunities in their lives. However, with over 52,000 individuals currently on waiting lists for supports and services, systemic change and significant increases in resources are necessary to achieve this goal.   “It hasn't been funded properly,” states Community Living Ontario CEO Chris Beesley. “You can create a vision and be aspirational, but unless you provide the necessary resources, it's meaningless."   Community Living Essex County and the broader developmental services sector are urgently urging the Ontario government to take action. There are 52,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities who are waiting for the chance to belong—not to a service system, but to vibrant communities where they can contribute and be valued.   Karen Bolger, the Executive Director at Community Living Essex County, and Corey Dalgleish, the Director of Community Living Operations, joined me this week to shed light on the urgency of this matter.

Slam the Gavel welcomes Investigative Journalist Richard Luthmann to the podcast. We discussed the case of Monica Ciardi who has been jailed in Essex County, New Jersey Correctional Facility. WHY is this 110 lb. woman STILL jailed over 180 days in Essex County, the seat of Newark NJ, one of worst jail population and not being treated medically? What happened was, Judge Peter Bogaard, in Morris County, NJ, had stated in family court to Monica, "If you don't do what I say, you'll never see your children again." Monica then quoted him on Facebook, but forgot to put the phrase in quotations. Judge Bogaard took it as a "terroristic threat" against his own children. She was then arrested and now jailed unlawfully for exercising her First Amendment rights. Monica is not in good health while she sits in jail at taxpayers expense on the whim of a judge. The family court judges have a habit of not looking at evidence, disregarding Pro Se's and relying on hearsay.    We discussed Cancel Culture and how it evolved, which explains how society has deteriorated and families being torn apart. To Reach Richard Luthmann: Luthmann.Substack.com and Richard.luthmann@protonmail.com***** Supportshow(https://www.buymeacoffee.com/maryannpetri)Maryann Petri: dismantlingfamilycourtcorruption.comhttps://www.tiktok.com/@maryannpetriFacebook:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/guitarpeace/Pinterest: Slam The Gavel Podcast/@guitarpeaceLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryann-petri-62a46b1ab/  YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@slamthegavelpodcasthostmar5536  Twitter https://x.com/PetriMaryannEzlegalsuit.com*DISCLAIMER* The use of this information is at the viewer/user's own risk. In this illuminating conversation, Kacey Baker, host of The Cult Vault podcast, shares her journey from lockdown podcaster to advocate and expert in coercive control. What began as a way to stay mentally stimulated during COVID isolation while caring for her newborn has evolved into nearly 400 episodes featuring survivor stories and in-depth discussions about cults and coercive control. Baker recently completed her master's degree in the psychology of coercive control, bringing academic rigor to her growing expertise in the field. Throughout the episode, Baker discusses how her understanding of cult dynamics and coercive control has transformed through years of interviewing survivors. She candidly acknowledges her own past misconceptions about people who join cults or remain in abusive relationships, explaining how direct conversations with survivors helped reshape her perspective. A key insight from her work is recognizing how coercive control manifests across various contexts - from cults to domestic relationships, military training, workplace abuse, and human trafficking. Baker provides valuable information about current legislation around coercive control, particularly focusing on the UK's Section 76 of the Serious Crime Act (2015). While this law criminalizes coercive control in domestic settings, she explains its limitations in addressing group contexts like cults. She discusses ongoing efforts through organizations like The Family Survival Trust and the National Working Group of Spiritual and Ritual Abuse to expand this legislation's scope. The conversation delves into Baker's thoughtful approach to interviewing survivors, emphasizing ethical storytelling and the importance of avoiding re-traumatization. She explains how most guests reach out to her independently, and she offers various options to protect their identities, including the use of pseudonyms and careful omission of identifying details. Baker also shares insights from her recent participation in a conference about spiritual and ritual abuse, describing the powerful experience of being among professionals who deeply understand coercive control's cross-contextual nature. She discusses her role at CrimeCon events, where she often invites survivors to speak alongside her, ensuring their voices remain central to discussions about cult experiences. The episode concludes with Baker's reflections on how personal interest can evolve into meaningful advocacy work. Witch Hunt - history told in music, sound, and story

https://www.patreon.com/Witch_HuntThis episode tells the story of Martha Corey, the fourth person accused of witchcraft. She was the wife of Giles Corey who is famously known for being crushed under a door while asking for “more weight”. The accusations against Martha marked the beginning of a dramatic escalation of the hysteria. The first three women accused of witchcraft in the Essex County hysteria of 1692 were on the very bottom of the social hierarchy and essentially “the usual suspects”. Martha Corey however was higher up the ladder, as she was a full member of the church who made it a point to let everyone know of her piousness and faith. However, she also had a well-known past of controversy, having given birth to a mixed race child who she had to raise at a boarding house for ten years. Martha proved to be defiant towards her interrogation and stood her ground, despite knowing that the odds were stacked against her. Her husband Giles turned on her and submitted a statement to the court saying he suspected her of witchcraft. Many portions of this episode including all of the dialog are taken directly from the original written statements and court transcriptions of the time. Special thanks to Rachel Koppelman for voices of Martha Corey, Abigail Williams, Bethsaa Pope, and others. All music written, arranged, and recorded by Brian O'Connell except “Psalm 39, Martyr's Tune" adapted from the Bay Psalm Book, 1698.Episode 6 Parts:  Part I - Gospel WomenPart II - “Psalm 39, Martyr's Tune"Part III - The Boston Jail & Martha's StoryPart IV - A visit to the accusedPart V - Disruptions at servicePart VI - The examination of Martha CoreyPart VII – Statement of Giles CoreyBrian O'Connell - narration, acoustic 12-string guitar, electric upright bass, recorder, glockenspielRachel Koppelman - narration Recorded at Studio Vinniechops https://www.patreon.com/Witch_Hunt Sources “The Salem Witch Trials – A Day-By-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege” by Marilynne K. This time, Hebba let us know that she has a friend coming to town. Her friend has some strict parameters on what she wants out of New Jersey. Their base of operations is Bloomfield. The friend has some limits on food that mean it can't just be a "show off the sick food of the Essex County area" trip. Farming and market gardening require continually learning and appropriately managing risks. Robert "Bob" Waring of Brandon Farms in Essex County, Virginia is a proponent of cover crops, soil health, and on-farm research. Bob states he sees the beginning of a movement, particularly as farmers learn from other farmers. He has embraced cover crops, and he consistently maps biomass yields and samples his fields' soil nutrient levels. In testing theories and making observations through the years, Bob has been able to reduce external inputs of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and lime, while increasing yields and return on investments. Bob attributes some of these results to improved biological activity in the soil and restored natural nutrient cycling. In addition, the summer cover crops he plants protect soil moisture, reduce soil temperatures compared to bare ground, and buffer soil pH. If you have questions about building soil health and the benefits of following climate-smart principles in your cropping and farming systems, please visit your local Virginia Cooperative Extension unit, a USDA Service Center, or a Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District office near you. To learn about the Virginia Soil Health Coalition and join the Coalition's quarterly meetings, please visit https://www.virginiasoilhealth.org/.To review the four core soil health principles and access the recent 4 The Soil blog posts that Jeff Ishee referenced, please visit https://www.4thesoil.org/.As always, we would love to learn about your soil health journey and encourage you to join the 4 The Soil movement.
