Summary:Executive presence is a learned skill and has nothing to do with ability, extraversion, or charisma. (9:17)50% of leaders say "looking and acting" like a c-suite exec is more important than qualifications. So we need to study the looking and acting just as much as technical competence. (12:10)Having an executive presence doesn't mean you have to change who you are, or be fake. You just need to tweak your behaviors just a tiny bit and use them in the right contexts. Does conflict have to be a part of doing business? It often seems unavoidable - something to be dealt with. But what if your work could truly be free of conflict? Today’s guest has a huge depth of experience helping people of all backgrounds create situations in which everyone wins. Key Takeaways When you find yourself being drawn into a conflict, stop and examine how you ended up there. Then think about something constructive that you could do differently. About Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler is the Founder and CEO of Alignment Strategies Group, the New York-based consulting firm that helps CEOs and their executive teams optimize organizational health and growth. She is the author of OPTIMAL OUTCOMES: Free Yourself from Conflict at Work, at Home, and in Life, which was selected as a Financial Times Book of the Month. Jennifer is a keynote speaker at Fortune 500 companies, public institutions, and leading startups, including Google, Harvard Law School, and the United Nations. A former counterterrorism fellow with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, she earned her Ph.D. in Social-Organizational Psychology from Columbia University and has taught conflict freedom at Columbia for a decade. Getting Free From The Conflict Loop I’m sure you've experienced this too; You go to great lengths to resolve a conflict, but it keeps rearing its head again and again. Jennifer says that instead of trying to resolve the unresolvable, we should strive to fully free ourselves from it. It’s all about removing yourself from the conflict loop. This means examining some of your habits that may be drawing you into these situations. Often we blame other people or ourselves. We may even shut down in an effort to avoid confrontation altogether. Sometimes we even try to collaborate our way out of a conflict. All these lead to wasted time and energy as they seldom actually solve the problem. Cultivating New Habits That Lead to Winning Situations It’s not enough to just identify how you end up in conflict. It takes practice to learn to free yourself from it. Jennifer describes some proven strategies to look at conflict situations from different angles. When you get a better perspective on things, it is possible to build more empathy and discover solutions. When we understand what people need and what they want, what their values - both spoken and unspoken - are, we can serve them best. Understanding this won’t just allow you to free yourself from existing conflict, it will help you avoid it in the first place. What can you do to create win-win situations in your business? Which of the conflict habits do you find yourself in? Leave a comment on the episode page! In This Episode: The four habits that lead to conflict [4:45] Practices to overcome your conflict-creating habits [15:55] The role of empathy in preventing and resolving conflict [20:42] Finding clients whose values you can best connect with [29:38] Quotes “We use what I call our conflict habits. Those conflict habits interact with other people’s conflict habits and keep us locked in a pattern of interaction that becomes self-reinforcing and it’s very difficult to break free.” [7:22] “One of the practices in this methodology is about not only how to manage and free yourself from conflict once it’s already occurred, but also how to prevent it from getting worse or even prevent it from happening in the first place.” [31:54] “You can’t know if someone’s values are misaligned with yours unless you know what your own values are.” [33:31] Links: Sign up to join the FREE 5 Day Grow Your Video Business Challenge Core Storyblocks Find Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler online Follow Jennifer on Linkedin | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram OPTIMAL OUTCOMES: Free Yourself from Conflict at Work, at Home, and in Life Dr. Jennifer Goldman-Wetzler Optimal Outcomes Resources Alignment Strategies Group Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? NUGGET CONTEXT Jen speaks about how we all need to be cognizant of the values of the person we are dealing with. She goes on to categorize the values on the other side as ideal values and shadow values. Ideal values are those that are visible and those that the person is willing to acknowledge. Shadow values often are those that are hidden below the surface and the person may not publicly acknowledge those. Joanna is an executive presence coach, workplace psychologist, and fashion stylist who helps women develop transformative leadership skills. Using her engaging and approachable method, Joanna teaches women how to show up with character, confidence, and style. Joanna earned her M.A. in Social-Organizational Psychology from Columbia University before taking on leadership development roles at Tiffany & Co., JetBlue, and Daily Burn, among others. After accumulating over ten years of leadership development experience in a mix of corporate and start-up settings, she founded Copper + Rise in 2017. Joanna founded Copper + Rise to teach women what no one teaches them about leadership. Over the years, she's realized that leveling up in your career isn't just about what you know. Women also have to look, speak, and act like leaders--and that's where executive presence comes in. Joanna defines executive presence as how you speak, how you act, and how you look. It's the style and substance of who you are. Joanna's background in psychology, leadership development, and fashion styling is the trifecta she brings to this work. Joanna's writing and insights on leadership, presence, and style have been featured in RealSimple, MSN.com, HuffPost, Fairygodboss, Thrive Global, TheLadders, and more. Ria Yoshida is a Sex Coach who helps people have extraordinary Sex and passionate Love. excerpt from Ria: “I know how it feels when you're disconnected to your body and sexuality. Like you, I didn’t have the proper guidance and grew up shackled in sexual shame and guilt. Every curse word and insult I heard since the peak of my pubescent innocence was some form of body shaming insult and sexual slang. Just when my body was blossoming into a voluptuous sexual woman—I learned that it was something to be ashamed of and to hide—how twisted is that?! But it wasn't all bad—both of my parents are entrepreneurs who help people in the healing science and arts. So I grew up with spirituality, body health and mind development. I learned bodywork and went on to earn my master's degree in Social-Organizational Psychology at Columbia University. Graduate school wasn't just about scientific journals and research—I was newly in love and stumbled upon polyamory. I started experimenting with psychedelics, sex parties and art festivals like Burning Man. Eventually in my healing journey and finding new love, I got this nagging feeling that something was missing and just not quite hitting my heart's bulls eye. In this realization Universal Intelligence worked her magic and I felt pulled from the center of my chest to explore sacred sexuality.” riayoshida.com foshoenergywork.com/sacredorgasmicliving music: vanark.bandcamp.com/track/2-late-night-lights arkteknologies.wordpress.com/
