Greg Jenner is joined in 16th-Century France by Dr Estelle Paranque and comedian Shaparak Khorsandi to learn all about controversial queen Catherine de' Medici.Catherine's life was dramatic from the moment she was born: orphaned when she was just a few weeks old, she was brought up by her uncle the Pope, and her childhood was shaped by the tumultuous politics of Renaissance Florence. At fourteen, she was married to the son of the king of France and shipped off to the French court, only to find herself involved in a literal ménage à trois with her teenage husband's older mistress. But after her husband became king – and even more so after he died and her sons ruled France – Catherine came into her power as queen and later queen mother. And through her children and the marriages she organised for them, Catherine's influence was even felt beyond the borders of France. She even corresponded with Tudor queen Elizabeth I!This episode traces Catherine's tumultuous personal and political life from orphaned child to grandmother of Europe, exploring along the way the terror of the French Wars of Religion, and asking whether the dark legend of Catherine 'the serpent queen' is deserved, or whether she has been misunderstood by history. This is a radio edit of the original podcast episode. Ever wondered if you have ADHD? In the past it seemed like this was a label reserved only for naughty boys, but these days more adults than ever are being diagnosed with the condition. Which begs the question: do some of us have it and don't even know? In this episode Anna is joined by comedian Shaparak Khorsandi, whose life was transformed for the better when she was diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in her forties. With the support of NHS consultant psychiatrist Dr Jessica Eccles, Anna and Shaparak explore how ADHD can affect us as adults, and what we can do if we suspect we have it. We want to thank the wonderful Sarah and Chris from the online community HeyDHD who helped us out for this episode. You can follow them here. And you can find out more information about Dr Eccles' research at @drbendybrain. … Have questions about sex? Divorce? Motherhood? Menopause? Mental health? In today's trip down memory lane, the ever effervescent Shaparak Khorsandi leads the way – with a quick stop off at Comedy's figurative playground – via her own yellow brick road. We dissect second chances, shifting statuses, and how the pursuit of money stunts artistic quality...Candid, nuanced, and not lacking in poise, Shaparak opens up on the difficult situations to which her early standup inexperience subjected her, and the realisation of how bullying is ultimately rooted in jealousy.Stu's new comedy special "I Need You Alive" has a worldwide digital premiere on Feb 23rd, see the trailer and find the ticket link at www.stuartgoldsmith.com Hosted on Acast. Money mules allow cash to enter their account to send on to others, often with financial incentives. Even without knowing they are doing so, they may be partaking in money laundering and therefore, breaking the law.You can be approached in person or online, with perpetrators often being criminals or part of gangs seeking to ‘clean' money through multiple transactions. They often target those they feel would be the easiest to manipulate, which is often older and younger people. This is particularly worrisome for parents, as young children can easily be recruited into this, given 44% of those aged 13-24 admit they would consider letting someone use their account if offered money, while 11% would unknowingly become a money mule – transferring money from their account to others after someone has sent it on to them.According to new research from the Nationwide Building Society, 20% worry about their financial situation and 77% wish they had more money to buy the things they want, without having to ask their parents for money.Shappi Khorsandi, bestselling author and British comic, is a mother of two and has partnered with the building society to educate the nation's parents about these perils, not only to protect themselves but to pass on knowledge and telltale signs to their children.Shappi herself has been a victim of fraud and has spoken to her children about protecting their finances. What's in a name? A lot as it turns out, as the artist formerly known as Shappi casts quite the magical spell at her dream festival. There's talk of how a recent ADHD diagnosis has proved a positive game-changer, her mum's dill rice, and the PTSD she still feels after fleeing from terror threats as a child in Iran. Her choices on this fantasy stage range from childhood comedy heroes, to mercurial kings of the stadium (one music, one comedy), and a chart-topping icon who's also there to look after her kids.
