Charlie joins Caitlin to cover 2018's Calibre - a movie without a monstrous feminine theme, but one worth talking about nonetheless. We talk about themes of friendship, guilt, paranoia, and justice, and we praise the movie for its cinematography and acting. Tangents include: iPhone face, accents, Scotland, colonoscopies, smoking, firearms, hunting, movies that make us cry, themes that make us cry, fake crying, cereals, and pastries. Weigh in on the great muffin debate, and also let me know what you'd like to see out of upcoming episode 200!

We have Emmy & BAFTA winning actor Martin Freeman joining us for dinner this week! And he may have a filthier mind than me! In the midst of rehearsals for his new play, mum served up a delicious Ginger Pig lamb with an array of gorgeous sides for Martin. We heard all about his love of musicals (especially West Side Story), how he nearly became a professional squash player in his youth, how he gave up being a vegetarian after 25 years, what it's like being the youngest of 5 children, and we hear about the exciting new play he is starring in with Jack Lowden. We laughed throughout this whole episode, Martin was a total dream dinner party guest (even if he had given up puddings for lent!). Martin's show ‘The Fifth Step' opens at ‘@SohoPlace' on 12th May and runs through to the end of July. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this week's episode, co-hosts Bruce Miller and Terry Lipshetz go over the list, focusing largely on the movies, which tend to shine brightest at the ceremony. But they also take time to review a few of the TV shows, including the great, but rarely funny "The Bear," which is again in the comedy or musical category. We also have an interview with "Nickel Boys" director RaMell Ross, who spoke with Miller prior to the film receiving a nomination for best drama.
Apple TV Plus recently launched Season 3 of Slow Horses starring Gary Oldman as the disheveled, flatulent, and often drunk Jackson Lamb. It is also midway through its Monarch Legacy of Monsters show that expands Legendary's Monsterverse. I had an opportunity to speak with some of the creative folks behind both shows. First, I'll be speaking to Oldman and co-star Jack Lowden about where their characters are in this latest season of Mick Herron's espionage tale. Then I will talk to the people behind the camera who are bringing Godzilla to the small screen.
Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode celebrate the life and career of the much-loved Liverpudlian screenwriter and director Terence Davies, who died earlier in 2023 at the age of 77.From an astonishing trilogy of early short films, to his final feature, 2021's Benediction, Terence Davies seamlessly blended personal recollections with wider essential truths. His subjects ranged from autobiographically inspired portraits of postwar working-class life in Liverpool in films like Distant Voices Still Lives and The Long Day Closes, to intimate portraits of real-life authors, most remarkably the American poet Emily Dickinson in A Quiet Passion. Mark speaks to Scottish actor Jack Lowden, who played poet Siegfried Sassoon in Benediction, about his relationship with Davies. He also talks to critic and historian Lillian Crawford about why the director's work resonates so deeply for so many. And Ellen discusses Davies' relationship to his hometown with two fellow Scousers - author and screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce, and actor Tina Malone, who starred in The Long Day Closes.Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

In this episode, Wellington is joined by guest and good friend of the show Trenton Morales to review Dunkirk, the 2017 war film written, directed, and produced by Christopher Nolan that depicts the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II. Starring Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carey, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, and Tom Hardy, Wellington and Trenton discuss how this film served up an emotionally satisfying spectacle and how it's another film where Christopher Nolan seems to be in full command of his craft. They also discuss the use of sound and visuals in this film, how Tom Hardy fits into any Nolan film, early thoughts on how Oppenheimer will be, and a bonus discussion on how many classic films Christopher Nolan has.

Although European leaders have stepped up in many ways to support Ukraine, the war has also laid bare Europe's profound dependence on the United States. This reality was at the heart of French president Emmanuel Macron's recent call for more “strategic autonomy”, which stirred a new debate over the transatlantic power imbalance. It was also the topic of a new publication, “The Art of Vassalisation”, from ECFR's research director, Jeremy Shapiro, and senior policy fellow and head of the Berlin office, Jana Puglierin, who join week Mark Leonard for this week's episode. What factors influence “vassalisation”, and is it really more beneficial for the Americans? And how seriously are Europeans taking the risk of a Republican victory in 2024? This podcast was recorded on 3 April 2023. Please note that we adapted the introduction to Macron's interview on 9 April, but some views of our experts might be outdated. An in-depth analysis of the current events will soon follow in an extra episode. One of the very best things on Apple TV+ is Slow Horses, and one of the very best actors in Slow Horses is Jack Lowden - of Mary Queen Of Scots, Fighting With My Family and War And Peace fame - here playing alongside the legendary Gary Oldman in this thoroughly entertaining spy thriller series based on the books by Mick Herron. Writer and director Terence Davies' latest film "Benediction" premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received strong critical praise for its screenplay depicting the life of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon and for the leading performance by Jack Lowden, with many citing it as the best of his career. Both Terence and Jack were kind enough to spend a few minutes discussing with us what drew them toward this biopic, what they learned about Siegfried in the making of this movie, their favorite poems by him, and more.
