Jesse Simon from the MN Hard Bop Collective grew up loving organ jazz out in Denver, Colorado so when it came to for the MN Hard Bop Collective to add more events to their sit-in series it was no surprise that Simon decided to concentrate on the organ. The series will draw inspiration from the legendary organist Shirley Scott. The MN Hard Bop Collective is launching a new weekly Sit-In Series event on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 at Metronome in Saint Paul. The group already holds court for their original Sit In Series at Metronome on Mondays at 7pm. Both events give jazz players of every age and ability level the opportunity to play with professional musicians and experience the exhilaration of 'sitting in' on a tune.

The Left Bank Jazz Society brought some of the biggest names in jazz to Baltimore, including Duke Ellington, Freddie Hubbard and Carmen McRae. Hundreds of performances in the 1960s and 70s were hosted by the Left Bank Jazz Society in The Famous Ballroom—now the site of the expanded Charles Theatre in the Station North arts and entertainment district. Recordings from its hallowed stage are set to be released Saturday, providing a new glimpse into this stunning chapter of jazz history. Zev Feldmen, founder of Jazz Detective Records and co-producer of the releases joins us to discuss the music and history of the Left Bank Jazz Society. We are also joined by Katea Stitt, Program Director for jazz station WPFW in Washington, D.C, and daughter of jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt. The three LPs are a joint project of local label Jazz Detective Records and Vancouver-based Reel to Real Records. They feature legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt on Boppin' in Baltimore: Live at the Left Bank, Shirley Scott on Queen Talk: Live at the Left Bank and Walter Bishop Jr. on Bish at the Bank: Live in Baltimore. These LPs are available only at independent music retailers participating in Record Store Day, tomorrow, April 22. To mark Record Store Day on Saturday, Stitt and Feldmen are set to join a panel discussion on the Left Bank Jazz Society at Joe's Record Paradise in Silver Spring at 2pm.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A master is someone who teaches, a master is someone who sacrifices and loves themselves. To master is knowing how to access your native gifts. As far as my guest is concerned that translates out to being one of the most in demand, highly respected, versatile bassists in the world. He was raised by his musical elders like Richard Davis who had been a guest twice on this show. The Pisces swimming upstream downstream always adapting, always churning, overcoming. Astrology aside my guest has played with The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin for the last 50 years. That was in between studying and watching Mingus dual with Dolphy in some mob run club. Lock the groove, play free, play a blues before the word funk even came into the lexicon. He's played and recorded with King Curtis, Jim Pepper, Duane and Gregg Allman, Eddie Harris, Gil Scott Heron, The Voices of East Harlem and Shirley Scott. A master gives back like Ali Akbar Kahn and Jerry Wexler and Dizzy Gillespie. Knowing their instrument, knowing their strengths like Chuck Rainey or Bernard Purdie or the late great Richard Tee.......my guest today is giving back on multiple levels including mixing live iconic music with youth baseball. Something only Jackie Robinson would have dreamed off.... Jerry Jemmott welcome to the JFS
Candidates (D) Nikki Lee and (R) Michael Hicks, running to fill the Tucson City Council seat being vacated by Shirley Scott, discuss what it means to be a "team player," how to represent the interests of Ward IV and where you might find them when they aren't campaigning.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
My guest today is the man. Tim Warfield. Legend. He's shared the stage with everyone from Donald Byrd, to Marcus Miller, to Christian McBride, to Shirley Scott, to Nicholas Payton, Charles Fambrough, Terell Stafford, Stefon Harris, Orrin Evans, and that is the extremely abridged version. But what is most impressive to me is how he encourages, energizes, and leads the next generation. Our conversation was super inspiring as we jumped around from various topics including fashion, conquering fear, dealing with the business of music, his unique take on ear training, as well as some nuggets of wisdom from a life spent among the masters. If you haven't checked out his work, I highly recommend his albums Gentle Warrior, Jazzland (his most recent release), and my personal favorite Spherical, his deep dive into the work and genius of Thelonious Sphere Monk.
