This week we explore the music of the Naptown trumpet player Michael Ridley. Michael played with some of the biggest stars in American music, including Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, and Otis Redding. But he's best known for his work in jazz. Michael performed with many jazz greats, from Archie Shepp to Jimmy McGriff.  Michael Ridley was born in Indianapolis in 1939. At that time, his family lived in Lockefield Gardens — a federal housing project located on the Avenue. Ridley attended Shortridge High School. He performed with the school band and studied music at the MacArthur Conservatory on Indiana Avenue. There was music in Ridley's home too. His older brother, Larry Ridley, is a legendary jazz bassist known for his work with Thelonius Monk, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, and others.

Blastin'' 7s” from Colemine and Stax - Memphis being a huge Organ town, also Jamacians participation with the organ, the reggae organ groove known as the Bubble. The key to the bubble is, of course, the rhythm. The right hand plays predictably on beats two and four (think of the classic reggae-guitar "chick - chick"). The spiciness is in the left hand, which plays all up-beats (or the "ands"). Episode #125: Tony Monaco

Improv Exchange Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2023 54:03

Tony Monaco began his keyboard life at age eight, on the accordion. When he was twelve, his destiny as a jazz organist was sealed when he first heard Jimmy Smith. An enthusiastic student, Tony began working in Jazz clubs as a teenager in his native Columbus, Ohio, guided by local organ gurus Hank Marr and Don Patterson. For further inspiration, he studiously absorbed the mastery of Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. All would play a role in the development of his musical palette. On Tony's sixteenth birthday, his prayers were answered. He received an encouraging phone call from Jimmy Smith, who soon became his Mentor/Teacher. Four years later, Jimmy Smith invited Tony to play at his club in California--a peak lifetime experience for Tony. From 1980 to 2006, Tony stood by his family businesses and married to have three daughters, while running Monaco's Palace Italian restaurant for ten years while performing weekly in the lounge. Tony then entered the food brokerage industry peaking towards Torchbearer status with SYSCO Foods. Always inspired by music, Tony then went to work as an assistant Broadcast producer for a prominent ad agency learning his production skills and playing gigs at night to continue supporting his family. After graduating from college with a B.S.B.A. from Franklin University in 1989, Tony's occupation changed again to supervisor of Monaco Concrete (“my Father needed a good manager and my daughters were getting close to going to college!”). Tony now enjoys and concentrates on all his musical energies flourishing ultimately as he pursues his passions. In April 2000, Tony met fellow jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco, who offered to produce a debut CD for him. This collaboration resulted in the critically acclaimed "Burnin Grooves”. The international success of the recording served as the catalyst for regional and national tours. This success was followed by two more releases for Summit Records that received critical acclaim and significant sales, charting in the Jazzweek Top 10. In September 2003, Summit Records released "A New Generation”, a unique recording featuring both Tony's and Joey DeFrancesco's Trios. They recorded the project using two "Hammond-Suzuki New B3's" as Tony was awarded a major endorsement role with Hammond and Suzuki. As Tony's reputation has grown, he has been blessed to play with some of the greatest musicians in jazz, including Mel Lewis, Lewis Nash, Red Holloway, Plas Johnson, Sonny Fortune, Jon Faddis, Adam Nussbaum, Bruce Forman, Harvey Mason, Chester Thompson (drummer) Herlin Riley, Matt Wilson, Jeff Clayton, Terrell Stafford, Eric Alexander, Late Bobby Durham, Russell Malone, Peter Bernstein, Paul Bollenback, Bruce Forman, Kevin Mahogany, Victor Lewis, Pat Martino, Fareed Haque, and even George Benson. An ardent student of the organ, it's no surprise that Tony is an accomplished teacher as well. In addition to private students, classes and clinics, Tony has produced a series of instructional DVDs titled "Playing Jazz Hammond" that have quickly become indispensable for any serious student of the organ. Tony teaches Lessons online with a system he created giving lessons one on one online to anyone from anywhere around the globe! Presently, Tony maintains a busy schedule touring, including festival appearances, clinics, and workshops In 2007 he appeared on the cover of Keyboard Magazine. In April 2012, Tony released "Celebration Life * Love * Music, a two-disc set of all originals as he continues to Celebrate his Musical gifts and shares his skills with everyone. Tony's drive as an innovator and missionary continues to carry forward his passion for the Hammond Organ. Now Executive Producer of the Summit Records subsidiary Chicken Coup Records, he has recorded and released CDs for several undiscovered organists around the globe, and his role as an educator has allowed him to spread and cultivate many new hopefuls to the art of the jazz organ. In 2014 Tony released Furry Slippers with fellow guitarist Fareed Haque and Drummer Greg Fundis! Topping the Jazz and College charts and gaining several reviews! Tony continues his mission to raise awareness and appreciation of the jazz organ and its importance in genres as diverse as traditional Gospel, RnB, and Modern Jazz. He is formulating new strategies and record deals using his network through Chicken Coup Records to help himself and his peers and students advance in this ever-changing music market and utilize new technologies and markets. Tony is a vital source of musical experience, knowledge, and humility ready, willing, and able !!! In 2017, Tony celebrated a special anniversary, celebrating 50 years as a musician! In January 2019, Tony released his 11th Internation release "The Definition of Insanity" on his Chicken Coup Records label. He will be recording his second venture with Drummer great Steve Smith and Guitarist Vinny Valentino as Groove Blue Trio Tours Russia and Europe! Tony's looking forward to recording both new Instructional Vids as well as New Music while touring globally! In this episode, Altin shares his background, education, and musical journey.

The drums tell stories when played by masters. The traditional chanting with the drum elicits the spiritual sanctuary of slaves aboard ships sailing from Mother Africa to the islands. The slaves communicated amongst themselves, staying in the moment, keeping spirits high, as high as they could be. The drum and its rhythms made their way through the steel bands of the Bahamas and Danny Ray playing Cungas @ some Pink Flamingo Hotel in Miami Beach to Armando Peraza and George Shearin or Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie. But what about the stories, the poems the clave beat in Congo Square or Wayne State when my guest attended school. When traditional earthy Afro-Centric Jazzers were exploring Free Music. Totally unencumbered by time- The total African American Experience....in the moment all the time everyday. My guest today is a creator. Forever creating his spirit transcends his own being. Some people wait a whole lifetime to figure this out. My guest started realizing his true nature back when Frank Strazzeri and Jimmy McGriff and Willis Jackson were blowing up Rochester at the social club his mom ran. At Wayne State the neighborhoods were communities, tribes with different factions but an understanding of the music. The power of the music and the sophistication of the music. It might have been the Jockey Club with Jimmy Smith and Donald Bailey. Or at the London House where Ed Thigpen held down the groove with Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown. The music and the rhythms have always been suppressed in this country which is why my guest is no longer living here. He lives in France where music is an inherent part of the cultural fabric of the people. It's a multi-colored fabric that reaches all across the world and acknowledged the great black musicians, artists and entertainers. You want to make 5 trillion dollars and be obligated to give nothing back to the culture then the US is the place to be. If you want to be recognized and appreciated as an artist within a successful non communist system most African musicians moved to Europe. All of a sudden we as a country are having big discussions about race. My guest felt this, saw this, experienced this decades ago and bounced out. He dug the Midwest what with his unheralded Black Artists Group of St. Louie.....when Dizzy and Blakey and Elvin were still circuiting this globe searching for that magic triangle of sound. My guest left an imprint with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and The Arts Ensemble of Chicago which pleasured audiences here in the States and abroad what with their colorful attire, storytelling and sheer creative genius that told the story of their people. A story getting lost in the homogenization of the Americas. My guest believes his number one goal is to please the audience, educate those who's ears are open and play on in the memory of Roy Brooks and Tony Williams and Buddy Rich and Joe Jones and Art Blakey and.........well. On sale now at https://tinyurl.com/yy6vlsv3 (Amazon) and at https://tinyurl.com/y4ql53s2 (Apple Books) The first Hammond Organ -- the Model A -- was introduced in the United States in 1935 by inventor Laurens Hammond. He originally intended it for use in radio broadcasting, as a replacement for the piano in middle class homes, and as an affordable substitute for the pipe organ in churches. In the mid 1950s, the B3 model was introduced, and it quickly found a home in blues, gospel, and jazz music circles -- becoming one of their most popular sellers. On this episode of Blues Unlimited, we'll hear Hammond B3 rarities from Saint Louis-based keyboardist Sam Lazar (Jazz guitar legend Grant Green was an early member of the group) as well as J.C. Davis (his 45 for Chess, "Feznecky"), plus all time classics from Bill Doggett, Booker T. & the MG's, Jimmy McGriff, James Booker, and a special treat from Jazz keyboard legend Jimmy Smith. Although the original Hammond B3 was officially discontinued in 1974, we’re pleased to say that Suzuki -- who now owns Hammond -- recently came out with an updated tribute model, which is said to duplicate every single aspect of the original. Whether on a vintage Hammond B3 or the newly redesigned one, we look forward to more fine music being made on the Hammond B3 in years to come. Pictured: Hit maker for Stax Records, Booker T. Jones. We go from one of the most famous saxophonists featured last week....John Coltrane to one of the least known greats....his name Rudolph Johnson. Little is known about Mr. Johnson except that he is from Columbus, Ohio and first was heard touring with organist Jimmy McGriff. He headed west and was based in Los Angeles and spent a lot of time in San Francisco as well. A serious musician and a non-drinker and smoker he spent his time practising (8 hours a day!) and meditating. Johnson toured with Ray Charles for a few years as well He made two great recordings for the small Black Jazz label in the early 70's and tonight's Feature is his first. Done in 1971, it's called "Spring Rain". Rudolph shows his range on the horn with seven of his compositions. All different moods. His accompanists are John Barnes on piano, and Reggie Johnson(no relation) on bass and a wonderful drummer named Ray Pounds. Mr. Johnson passed away in 2002 with virtually no notice by the Jazz press and to this day few people have heard this great musician. Tonight and on The Jazz Show you will!

This is the guy who’s digging up the samples from Hip Hop tracks to the undiscovered. Your ears will love you for it. The stars must have been aligned when J1 made this mix. I seen a couple of joints from the Heavy Traffic soundtrack, and I was like no way. I watched Heavy Traffic for the first time a few months ago, and thought to myself, I needed to buy this soundtrack. I don’t want to spoil the goodness, so download J1’s B+C Radio episode First Class here and enjoy. Also be on the look out for Starship 27 Vol. 2: Take Off on Insect Records. BIG BIG thanks J1 for all that you do for Beats+Crates. Playlist: 1. Heavy Traffic Soundtrack – Scarborough Street Fair 2. Faze-O – Ridin High 3. Roy Ayers – Searching 4.
