"Eddie (Harris) was an enigma. He was also a soulful intellectual. He was an innovator who had hit records. He was a success, but he didn't appear all that popular. I think he must have had 3 audiences in one. Each person seeing something different in his music, and that's problematic to navigate in. But he was who he was. He was a creative force with many talents and interests."   Saxophonist/bandleader/composer Eric Person   We couldn't put it better ourselves, so how about if we give Eddie Harris a good, hard listen?  This Monday (5/12) from 6p to 9p NYC time, host Mitch Goldman invites Eric Person to the WKCR studios for a powerful Deep Focus.  If only they had rare, unreleased recordings of Eddie Harris from the WKCR archives.  Hmmm...

On this episode, Marc talks with Mike Smith, author of “In With The In Crowd: Popular Jazz in 1960s Black America,” published in May of 2024. Smith argues that most studies of 60s jazz focus on the avant-garde centered around John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, and more, and he sets out to balance that with a history of the more popular jazz artists from that decade, such as Eddie Harris, Nancy Wilson, and Ramsey Lewis, showing how their music also influenced the form and culture of jazz.As Mike writes, “There was an infrastructure that allowed jazz to thrive in the sixties because jazz, for many, was a moneymaker. It wasn't just the music of protest; it wasn't just the music that spoke to feelings of rage, anger, and resentment. Jazz could be all of those things, but it was also so much more.”We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Mike Smith!

When Ron Carter's name comes up, one of the first things people write or say is – he's played bass and cello on over 2500 albums. That's impressive and awe-inspiring. Totally agree. When I hear the name Ron Carter I think of the bassist who played in Miles Davis' second band, alongside Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams & George Coleman. “The List” of bands and recordings would include Wayne Shorter, Blue Note recordings with Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, and 100's of others. I talked to Ron about his recordings in popular music.  Roberta Flack, Eddie Harris, Aretha, Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Erykah Badu, A tribe called Quest, Phoebe Snow, The Rascals, Gil Scott-Heron, Carlos Santana. Ron has taught music for many years at esteemed colleges and schools, his current documentary is Finding the Right Notes, also the name of his bio book. Ron Carter turns 87 years old today – Saturday, May 4 !!  we wish him WELL. Enjoy the conversation – I sure did.

Burning Ambulance Podcast

Rufus Reid is an extremely important but under-recognized figure in modern jazz. He's always been someone who's had one foot in the mainstream and one in the avant-garde — he did a lot of work with soul jazz and jazz-funk saxophonist Eddie Harris in the early 1970s, before joining Dexter Gordon's band when Gordon made his famous US comeback after years in Europe. He was also part of Andrew Hill's band in the late '80s, and has done a ton of straightahead records. But he was also a member of Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition in the early '80s, and he was one of the four bassists on Henry Threadgill's X-75 album, and he played on Muhal Richard Abrams' Things To Come From Those Now Gone, and he played with Anthony Braxton on the two Seven Standards 1985 albums with Hank Jones on piano and Victor Lewis on drums. He was also a member of the World Bass Violin Ensemble, which was a group of six bassists that made an album for Black Saint in 1984. Reid has also done a lot of work as a leader. He's made a string of albums in collaboration with drummer Akira Tana and various other musicians; he's done bass duo albums with Michael Moore; and he's led the Out Front trio with pianist Steve Allee and drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. In 2014, he released Quiet Pride: the Elizabeth Catlett Project, an album that featured a total of 19 instrumentalists and a singer all paying tribute to a sculptor whose work focused on the Black female experience in America. Reid is also an educator and the author of The Evolving Bassist, a book originally published in 1974 that's still a standard text for bassists. In this interview, we talk about Reid's work with Eddie Harris, with Dexter Gordon, with Henry Threadgill, and with his own ensembles. We talk about a six-CD set he made with Frank Kimbrough a few years ago, recording all of Thelonious Monk's compositions. We talk about his approach to the instrument, his influences, and about his new album, which is a duo collaboration with pianist Sullivan Fortner. This was a really enjoyable and informative conversation, and I think you'll come away from it with a new or perhaps a renewed appreciation for someone who's been a major figure in jazz for 50 years and isn't stopping yet.

He mastered all instruments before him, and enjoyed an unusual breakthrough, by winning a Navy talent contest, opening the door to an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.An early hit came with "The Shampoo," the 1963 instrumental cut with his trio for Pacific Jazz Records.McCann would enjoy a fruitful relationship with Atlantic Records, releasing a dozen albums on the label from the late-‘60s through to the mid-‘70s.During that run, Atlantic released Swiss Movement, featuring McCann, frequent collaborator, saxophonist and labelmate Eddie Harris, and trumpeter Benny Bailey. The album earned a Grammy nomination for best jazz performance – small group or soloist with small group, and included the protest song, "Compared to What," which McCann and Co. performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969.Another career highlight would come in 1971, when McCann appeared with a starry cast of artists, including Wilson Pickett, The Staple Singers, Santana and Ike & Tina Turner, for an historic 14-hour concert in Accra, Ghana. The event was captured for the concert film Soul To Soul. His ears might have been just as impressive as his hands. It was McCann who discovered and recommended Roberta Flack to Atlantic Records.A stroke in the 1990s slowed McCann's output. So he channeled his energies into painting and photography, and he recovered for a string of music releases, including Pump It Up from 2002.Gore remembers McCann as a great of jazz, the creator of "timeless" works. Challenge Yourself So You Can Grow Your VA Business

The Ridiculously Good Virtual Assistant Show

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2023 12:45

Being able to get where you want to go with your VA business takes getting out of your comfort zone. Sometimes it takes a lot of that. We feel scared because we have never been where we want to go - and we don't realllly know if we can get there. We think we can, we hope we can, we try to plan to get there. But we don't really know - and that alone can make us freeze in our tracks. So we don't do the things that we know we need to do to get there. I know I give you a lot of advice about how to grow your business - and a lot of that is mindset work, that you have to push yourself - and we don't like to do that. But as Eddie says in our quote - although you think you are comfortable where you are … you're not. That's why you are looking for ways to do things differently. Like listening to this podcast, or taking trainings, or doing endless research online about how to be better, and do better. What you need to get comfortable with is taking steps that don't feel so easy. The best way to do that is to do it with support, of course. Getting someone to help you through the hard stuff is THE best advice I can give you. I have to say that the first step is always the hardest. After that things do get easier. I promise. But it can be hard to take that first step. I work with VAs all the time who have that trouble, and we work together through it. How? Confidence First things first, we need to make sure that you are confident in the services you are providing for your clients. We talk about what you know how to do, and how it helps your clients. There's a neat thing that happens when I talk to VAs either on a coaching call, in a group session, or even just a consult. I ask them what services they offer and very often they will try to recite an elevator pitch which is clunky and awkward. And then we continue the conversation, and I keep asking them questions. The more you talk to someone, the more comfortable you get. We are all nervous, especially in business conversations - as we all try to sound smart and say the right things. But what we really need to do is just be ourselves. As I continue asking questions about how the VAs help their clients, inevitably they settle in and get comfortable and then their voice changes. The confidence begins to come through as they easily describe how they help their clients. When we stop trying to sell, and just talk, that's when the confidence shift happens. And make no mistake, your clients will hear it just like I hear it. So the first thing you should do is remind yourself that you really do know what you are doing - and just be yourself when you are talking to others about your services (and their business). Challenge yourself to describe clearly how you help your clients, and when you can do that … you will grow your VA business. Mindset Fear is a powerful thing. It can stop us from doing so much. It's a good thing when it tells you not to jump out of an airplane maybe, but when we are talking about helping clients, it can limit us too much. And I know it's not just as simple as saying ‘do it anyway'. I hate that expression - feel the fear and do it anyway. That's not good advice. What I teach VAs to do is identify what the fear is and say ‘what is the worst that can happen'. If it's about reaching out to clients or attending a networking event, they say the worst is that they don't get the client. So you don't have the client right now, that's why you don't want to reach out or attend that event. But if that's the worst that can happen, then you're already there, aren't you? Now if the worst thing that can happen is that you say the wrong thing and you might feel embarrassed, then that's something else all together. Then we work through that. Mindset shifts aren't easy either - at least not all the time. But when we make them and see something from a different angle, it can be very helpful. For instance, if I tell you to do market research for your business, like I often do for my coaching clients - and that paralyzes you, then we want to get to the bottom of why you find it hard to do. A lot of VAs just get stuck on it because they feel like they have to sell themselves and that feels gross. I'm not going to get into the specifics of market research, but I can tell you that there is no selling going on in any of the market research calls that I ask VAs to do when I am working with them. You are not allowed to sell on them, as a matter of fact! For those that are really stuck, I ask them to approach the exercise as though they are doing it for a client. Why? Because we often jump right into anything a client asks of us. Think about it. If I asked you to do some market research for me, to talk to 10 people and ask them these specific questions, and collect their answers, and make sure you booked those calls to take place this week … you would say sure! and go ahead and do it. But it's when we are doing it for US that is the issue. So mindset is at work. And that's what we have to get around. So pretend it's not for you. Pretend it's for me. And go and do it. That's how you challenge yourself to do something that makes you feel stuck … and it's also how you grow your VA business. Getting Support I tell you all the time that whatever you don't know how to do, or whatever you don't do well, get support it. Sometimes that means training, and sometimes it means someone. In this case, when we are holding ourselves back from success, it usually means a person who can help you move through the hard part. We aren't meant to do everything on our own. And if you are stuck in your comfort zone (although we know that you aren't really comfortable right now), then it could be time to get someone to help you get moving. That can be one person - a coach, an accountability partner, a colleague, or it can be a group of people - a mastermind group, a business networking group, or a group of colleagues. Whatever you need is what you should get. One on one stuff can be great because it's direct. I have an accountability partner that I reach out to all the time because she knows me and my business and she is available at a moment's notice. Group stuff can be great because you get a lot of opinions and advice, which can be really good when you really aren't sure which way to turn. But the key is that you ask someone for help. So many of us working along fail to do that, and we suffer a lot longer than we need to because we are either trying to figure it out all by ourselves, or we are just sitting there doing nothing about it. Challenge yourself to find support for the things that you are struggling with … and you will grow your VA business. Lots of people also ask me about getting motivated to do what you need to do every day. I talk a lot about daily actions, but if things aren't going the way we want them to then motivation is really hard to come by. We can find ourselves just sitting waiting till it comes and getting farther and farther from our goals. What I suggest instead is processes. Have a process that you can follow to get the hard things done. Just like when you can do something for your clients (and you literally just jump into action if something is for them), setting a process in place and doing the things without emotion involved, can be what you need to help you get moving. One step at at time. Challenge yourself to create those processes. What are the steps you need to take to get what you want? Grow your VA business. And the last thing we need to do is celebrate us! When something good happens, we need to be aware that we are moving forward. Even something small, like posting a comment in a group if you haven't done that before - or introducing yourself at an event. These things are worth celebrating - every time. Your mindset will change when you start focusing on what you can do, and what is going right. Remember that getting out of your comfort zone is a gradual process. It's about consistently challenging yourself and being open to new experiences. Over time, these daily routines will help you develop the resilience and confidence needed to thrive in unfamiliar territory and achieve personal and professional growth. Let's circle back to the quote for today's episode: The sooner you step away from your comfort zone you'll realize that it really wasn't all that comfortable. - Eddie Harris, Jr. Gosh, I just love this quote. I really want you to reflect on this one. If you think you are comfortable where you are, and that the place you want to go is harder, you are, quite simply, wrong. And only when you get there will you realize that you were not happy being right here. You ARE not happy. That should be the biggest motivation of all. But we need to realize it first. You know you want to move out of where you are right now. So let's help you do that. Let's help you grow your VA business by challenging yourself to do the hard things .. .at your own pace. Rufus Reid With an incredible resume as a sideman, bandleader, and educator, bassist Rufus Reid represents one of the most significant links to the great jazz tradition. His remarkable accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, and Reid has worked and recorded with legends like Eddie Harris, Dexter Gordon, Andrew Hill, The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Quartet, Kenny Barron, Stan Getz, J.J. Johnson, Jack DeJohnette, and many others.  In fact, he has recorded on over 500 albums. His reputation as an educator is equal to that of his musical achievements.  His book The Evolving Bassist (Myriad Limited, 1974) remains the industry standard for double bass methodology.  Reid and Dr. Martin Krivin created the Jazz Studies and Performance Bachelor of Music Program at William Paterson University.  This program offered the first professional academically accredited Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in the NY, NJ, and CT tri-state areas. On November 19, 2022, Mr. Reid was honored as part of the Giants of Jazz Series at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in New Jersey. Kelly was a beloved mainstay of the Chicago jazz scene for more than 35 years. Born in Fargo, North Dakota, he grew up in the Chicago area. After receiving his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he returned to Chicago to perform and record with jazz artists such as Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, Clark Terry, Cedar Walton, Herb Ellis, Woody Shaw, Hank Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessel, Chris Potter, Ernie Watts, Bob Mintzer, Mel Torme, Anita O'Day, Jackie McLean, Joey DeFrancesco, Donald Byrd, Eddie Harris, Scott Hamilton, Victor Lewis, Clifford Jordan and Bucky Pizzarelli. He performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Elkhart Jazz Festival, the Red Sea Jazz Festival, Thessaloniki Concert Hall in Greece and Symphony Center in Chicago. Kelly's discography includes more than fifty recordings as a sideman and leader.   Kelly served on the faculties of Northeastern Illinois University, Lake Forest College, DePaul University and Northern Illinois University. He had that way of interacting with you, that way of giving you his full attention and self that made it feel like you were the most important person in the world to him. That way of interacting carried into his playing as well."   Subscribe to the podcast to get these interviews delivered to you automatically!   Check out our Online Sheet Music Store with 100+ wide-ranging titles for bassists.   Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle. Les McCann and Joe Alterman started as mentor and protege, but have become close friends over the last decade. When Joe first met Les, all he wanted to do was play like him. But Les taught Joe to do just the opposite: to embrace his own experiences and create a unique sound. Instead of trying to be a #2 Les McCann – be a #1 Joe Alterman. You may recognize Les McCann from his album with Eddie Harris, Swiss Movement, which features tunes like “Cold Duck Time” and “Compared to What.” It's a great recording, but he's also got some hidden gems, like the album Invitation to Openness. It's a completely different aesthetic. 15 band members improvising on an idea, with no “shoulds” or “have-tos.” It's incredible - and Les McCann dives into his early experiences that shaped the music. Tune in to hear more about Les and Joe's friendship, music, and lessons learned. Plus, they talk about a song they co-wrote that's featured on Joe's latest album. Tune in for 10 minutes! Resources: Learn more about Joe Alterman on his website. Keep listening to Joe's album, The Upside of Down, and Les's album, Invitation to openness. Stay tuned to Bite-Size Jazz in by following us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter.
