Matt Granados has been an entrepreneur since he was a teenager. Through his entrepreneurial journey, he built his first million-dollar business by the age of 24. To develop his businesses, Matt focused on developing his people. While creating a sales organize reaching the mark $40 Million dollar in sales made up of individuals hired primarily from Classified adds, Matt created a way to combine structure and intention which allow his "under-qualified" team to be the most effective, productive, and self-motivated versions of themselves. This system was discovered by one of the largest financial institutions in the world who asked Matt to share it with their team as they felt it solved their biggest personal problem. They were finding it nearly impossible to connect their corporate desired metrics with their individuals' desired goals. In their eyes, Life Pulse's System does just that.Although Matt has done this in multiple businesses of his own, it wasn't until this meeting that he recognized that the systems developed by Life Pulse could be used by individuals in businesses of all sizes. Since Matt created Life Pulse Inc, the team and systems have worked with individuals and small businesses to the likes of Twitter, Google, and the United States Airforce.  Matt's first book, Motivate the Unmotivated. quickly became a #1 International Bestseller and has launched Matt to be a sought-after expert on the ways of building sustainable motivation in teams and individuals as well as teaching groups on how to experience intentional growth in all areas of business and life.Matt lives outside of St. Louis, MO with his amazing wife Maria and two amazing kids, Natalie (Nat G) and Zach (Zig). Out of all of the things he enjoys doing, NOTHING comes close to being the husband to his wife and the father for his kids. Everything he does leads back to them and without them, none of this would be possible, and none of this would be worth it. Matt always knows content works when it passes his three tests. His experience, others' experience, and the hardest test to past, does it work within my family. Matt believes that truth is constant and application changes so anything that has truth should be able to withstand any part of life. Matt's family is his sounding board and the most important people in his life. www.LifePulseInc.com@LifePulseInc

Panelists Georg Link | Don Marti | Venia Logan Guest Matt Yonkovit (https://podcast.chaoss.community/guests/matt-yonkovit) Quotes [00:31:22] “We didn’t open source it to get help from the community, to make the product bigger. We open sourced as a freemium strategy; to drive adoption,” quote by MongoDB CEO. [00:37:32] “And I think that hurts the overall willingness for a lot of companies to invest heavily in community because community is a long tail activity. It’s about fostering relationships that last multiple companies. It’s about the fostering relationships that go over many years. And I think that’s a very important and key thing because when you look at marketing, is really designed to how do I get sales to get optimized? How do I get them leads to generate? So I think that’s an important thing to consider, is you’ve got this thing where you’ve got, Hey, I’m looking for the long term health of the community, but the bigger the community I have, the bigger pie that sales, eventually people will come in.” Sponsor SustainOSS (https://sustainoss.org/) Show Notes [00:02:51] Matt tell us what Percona is and what he does there. He also tells us what his day-to-day looks like. [00:05:45] Since Matt’s community seems to be very diverse and spreads across a lot of platforms creating a lot of content, he talks about where all his community facets are how they tie into and generate a lot of the content that supports here in community. [00:09:25] Georg asks Matt if he looks at the health of these communities that they are a part of or what does he look at. [00:14:20] Matt talks about the laws that have been enacted recently and how people have become data hoarders. [00:16:40] We learn about most applications having the consent now on the internet, and Matt talks about schemas and how it’s like an anti-developer thing. [00:21:51] Georg brings up in the CHAOSS project and how they are crafting data policy or privacy policy for their open source project because the idea that we work in the open, the data is available, but some people don’t want them to analyze it even though it’s out there. Georg asks Matt if he has any ideas on this. [00:24:39] Don asks Matt if he finds himself taking private discussions and then going through the work of sanitizing them to the point where they can be shared with the community as a public content resource. [00:26:28] Venia wonders if Matt has a specific policy or data destruction point for their support tickets. Matt talks about having to implement different encryption schemes. [00:28:44] Matt shares his thoughts on open source licenses around databases. He mentions a talk he did at FOSDEM recently on “The Death of Openness and Freedom.” [00:35:55] Venia talks about metrics and putting together a dashboard for your community, and then asks Matt if he would say a lot of this could be cut off if you were to look at Metrics A rising and Metrics B lowering in proportion. [00:39:42] From the point of view of a developer who’s starting a new project, Don wonders how to balance the data base option against the option of running an open source database and managing it yourself. Matt explains database service being both a good thing and a bad thing all at the same time. [00:43:09] Matt tells us where we can find him online and more about his talks, blog, and podcast. Value Adds (Picks) of the week [00:44:07] Georg’s pick is Graphic novels to encourage reading. [00:44:37] Venia’s pick is a free book on communicationcache.com called, Virtual Teams That Work. [00:45:30] Matt’s pick is he’s excited to see ARM processors benchmarks. [00:46:27] Don’s pick is an open source project called Pi-hole. The HKT Podcast - The Mountain Bike & Action Sports Show

Matt Macduff is a professional mountain bike rider and action sports athlete from BC, Canada. You may remember Matt first appeared on the podcast back in November 2018 for episode #061.  Since Matt's first appearance we have stayed good friends, Matt and I often share book recommendations, articles and podcasts with each other and a few months ago I sent Matt a book title that I thought he'd enjoy. The book was called 'Breathe' by James Nestor, Matt downloaded the audio book while I bought myself the hardback version and we thought it would be a good idea to catch up for a chat when we'd both read the book.  The concept for this podcast came about by pure chance. Initially, I was going to go on Matt's podcast (The Matt Macduff Show) and talk about my podcast journey with the goal of then discussing our experiences and takeaways from this book. However, as the conversation unfolded and ideas formed we decided to share the audio file and post it on both platforms. The aim is to get our listeners involved with future books and to potentially continue this format as a monthly show.  This is a very varied and open episode which took us two days to record. We would both love to hear your feedback and wether you would like to hear more of this type of podcast. Please reach out and let us know... Matt Miller - Owner School Spirit Vending Matt Miller grew up in the Chicago area. Matt went to the Air Force academy. He was blessed to be medically qualified and he did well enough in school to be invited to the flight training program after graduating. He flew for nine years. He was stationed in Lubbock, TX for six as a Air Force instructor pilot. He then went to Dover, DE for three years and when his commitment was up in 1998, he exited the military to join corporate America. During his time in the miliary and the corporate world, he realized that he didn't like people telling him what to do. After a short chuckle, Matt admitted that he didn't like the fact that the rules were always changing and they weren't changing in his favor. It was frustrating for him to have other people telling him who, what, why and where he was going. Matt took to business online. He sold books on Ebay and he did some multi-level marketing, but none of these ventures produced what he was seeking. He was seeking an income that was passive in nature and offered something that he was really passionate about. One of his friends from church who mentioned that he and his young daughters had gotten started in the vending business. They were spending time together as a family and making money. He thought this might be an opportunity for him to live the lifestyle he dreamed about. Matt bought his first gumball machine on Ebay. He drove across Houston on a Saturday morning in his 1998 Honda Accord with two of his kids in tow and that was the beginning of his vending career. Making the Change and Succeeding When Matt came out of the military and had to take a pay cut. He slowly worked his way up in the advertising space. He was #2 in the company out of 750 sales reps with the company he was working with. For some reason, his boss didn't like this. She increased his quota by 96% when the average quota increase was 5 - 10%. That decision on her part ended up costing Matt and his family about $80k the next year. This caused a huge financial burden for Matt and so something needed to change. Since Matt's wife was responsible for home schooling her kids, the financial burden was Matt's responsibility. This is why Matt decided to ultimately seek out entrepreneurship. Matt is a big believer of taking action. "You can strategize your life away, but the only way you are going to move forward is to get it done, make it happen and figure things out." - Matt Miller The reason Matt decided to start School Spirit Vending was simple. In 2007 and 2008, the market tanked. People weren't spending the extra money in the vending machines he had placed in the various restaraunts. Matt was frustrated. Right around that time, he had many kids from the neighborhood stop by his house raising money for the school. Matt didn't think this was right. He thought that if he could find a way to help schools raise money and make it so the kids didn't have to run around by themselves without their parents to keep them safe. A couple months later, a good friend of Matt's came by for dinner and told him about his idea. His friend, a gym teacher for a local school, thought it was a good idea and wanted to run it by the principal. Two weeks later, his friend called Matt and let him know they had an approval to bring in the first machine. Matt set up the machine and the numbers that machine did was incredible. After testing the market even more, he found a model that was finally working. However, many of the schools weren't willing to participate in the program as early adopters. They wanted to hear of other scenario's that this is working in. Matt knew this was a good idea, but he just didn't know how to get it out there. He went online and did some searching. He found out that the Texas PTA was having an event in the Houston area. He thought this was a great idea to gain some exposure. He called a couple buddies to split the costs of the table,
