The Disturbing Reality of AI-Generated AbuseA new study reveals nearly 35,000 publicly downloadable AI models capable of generating deepfake pornography—often targeting women and celebrities. These "model variants" can be tweaked to create millions of non-consensual intimate images, fuelling a growing crisis in digital exploitation. Researchers identified 35,000 deepfake model variants in public repositories, with each model being used to generate countless AI-generated explicit images of real people. While 35,000 models may seem small compared to the vast internet, each one represents a potential weapon for harassment. Experts warn that without stricter regulation, deepfake abuse could spiral further out of control. The study was led by Will Hawkins from the Oxford Internet Institute. He joins Gareth and Ghislaine on the show. MySQL at 30: The Unsung Hero Powering Facebook, the Web & Your Data - The Database That Quietly Runs the InternetYou've probably never heard of it—but your data lives on MySQL. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, this open-source database is the invisible backbone of Facebook, countless websites, and nearly every major online service. It's an open-source success story, which relies on simplicity and speed and it's easy to set up. We spoke with Peter Zaitsev, who joined MySQL in 2002 and later co-founded Percona, a leading database consultancy. Next time you log into Facebook or book a flight, remember - there's a 30-year-old database working behind the scenes. Not bad for a tech "underdog." The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell and the studio expert is Ghislaine Boddington. This week on The Business of Open Source I had a slightly different conversation: I spoke with the CFOs of two open source companies, Sysdig and Percona, to better understand what is different (and what is not) about financial management in open source companies. Karen Walker is the CFO at Sysdig, and Eileen Doody is the CFO at Percona. They both joined me to talk about the CFO role in general and the CFO role in particular at an open source company. Why did I do this episode? Many founders I've spoken with are a bit unclear on the role of a CFO — whereas I've never spoken with a founder who had trouble understanding what their CTO does. Here's some takeaways from our conversation: Part of the CFO's role is about thinking about open source strategically, in terms of how the open source project is going to fit into the company's overall strategy.Because open source is so ingrained in the company, it doesn't fit into a single budget line item; it's impossible to break out and say ‘we spend $X on open source' because it's so integrated into everything the company doesHow do you measure your ROI on investment in open source? At Sysdig, two out of three prospects come to the company because of Falco, their open source project. We also talked about the ecosystem effects of having a huge footprint with your open source project; it's hard to measure the positive influence of having massive brand awareness, but both CFOs are convinced that it is very important to the company. Eileen says that many CIOs now have mandates to look for open source solutions when possible, which was not the case a decade ago. That's changed the dynamic for a company like Percona that's based around open source. Another reason I did this episode is because while I usually have founders on the podcast, there are some really important perspectives from other leadership team members. Part of the the role of a CEO is to understand all the other C-level leadership position's roles and responsibilities, and in my experience the CFO is one of the less well understood roles. In fact, we wrapped up the conversation by talking about how a CFO can be a real strategic partner that's forward-thinking rather than just the bean-counter that some people expect a CFO to be. A couple things to mention. First of all, if you want to learn more about my consulting work with open source companies, you can do so here. Second, if you want to chance to connect with other founders of open source companies, consider joining Open Source Founders Summit this May 19th and 20th in Paris.

Numerous blog posts have come out touting Valkey adoption. I'm not sure this whole thing is working out as well as Redis CEO Rowan Trollope had hoped. AI Is Going Great – Or How AI Makes All It's Money 03:26 Introducing Meta Llama 3: The most capable openly available LLM to date Meta has launched Llama 3, the next generation of their state-of-the-art open source large language model. Llama 3 will be available on AWS, Databricks, GCP, Hugging Face, Kaggle, IBM WatsonX, Microsoft Azure, Nvidia NIM, and Snowflake with support from hardware platforms offered by AMD, AWS, Dell, Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm Includes new trust and safety tools such as Llama Guard 2, Code Shield and Cybersec eval 2 They plan to introduce new capabilities, including longer context windows, additional model sizes and enhanced performance. The first two models from Meta Lama3 are the 8B and 70B parameter variants that can support a broad range of use cases. Meta shared some benchmarks against Gemma 7B and Mistral 7B vs the Lama 3 8B models and showed improvements across all major benchmarks. Including Math with Gemma 7b doing 12.2 vs 30 with Llama 3 It had highly comparable performance with the 70B model against Gemini Pro 1.5 and Claude 3 Sonnet scoring within a few points of most of the other scores. Jonathan recommends using LM Studio to get start playing around with LLMS, which you can find at https://lmstudio.ai/ 04:42 Jonathan – “Isn’t it funny how you go from an 8 billion parameter model to a 70 billion parameter model but nothing in between? Like you would have thought there would be some kind of like, some middle ground maybe? But, uh, but… No. But, um,
This week on The Business of Open Source, I spoke with Percona CEO Ann Schlemmer. This episode was recorded on site at State of Open Con in London, outside in a van! There's a ton of great info in this episode, too. First of all, Ann talked about being a ‘suit' in a geek's world and her career trajectory that led her to lead Percona. She also set the stage around the constraints that Percona has chosen for itself: To be completely open source and only sell services, and to be completely bootstrapped. And what the ramifications of those decisions are for the business. Here's some concrete takeaways:The key to thinking about managing the tension between creating a project that's high quality and still being able to sell services on top of that is to ensure that the services really create valueThere's a difference in profile between happy anonymous users and happy customers — often customers are operating at scale or are working in companies that simply always have to have support for critical software. But just as importantly, customers are often not database experts —they just need a database that works, and can turn to Percona to be their database experts. Founders are often more emotionally attached to aspects of the company that a non-founder CEOs like Ann can sometimes be more analytical about what's working and what isn'tCollaboration isn't automatic, and how to make it actually happenHow Ann decides what problems to collaborate with others on, what they don't collaborate on and when in the project / feature lifecycle they look for collaborationWe also had a bit of a random conversation about controlling status in relationships — the book we talked is Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre. And talked about how founders who are ready to step down as CEO can find a replacement and manage the transition. Ann's links:LinkedInPercona
As part of the preparation for Open Source Founders Summit, I'm interviewing both our speakers and our attendees for a special podcast that's hyper focused on one thing. In this episode I spoke with Peter Zaitsev, founder of Percona, about sales. We talked about the specifics of sales as a bootstrapped company — which means sales are exceptionally critical from the beginning, and how sales changed as the company moved from a consulting model to a support model on the open source software that Percona creates. Also, this episode was recorded on site at OpenUK's State of Open Con! Here's the concrete takeaways from this episode: Even before starting the company, Peter had built up a personal brand as a MySql expert — this is what made it possible for him to get consulting gigs pretty much immediatelyPeter's personal brand wasn't just around MySql in general, but was very specifically focused on MySql performance optimizationHow a growing team meant that the sales process had to get much more disciplined — and deal sizes had to get bigger so that it's worth the sales team's time How to align sales incentives with your business goals — how it's important to adjust sales quotas and incentives so that sales people don't oversell, which can hurt your reputation long-term, and don't sell long-term agreements at too much of a discount. Why it's important to separate out your revenue that comes from new customers and your revenue that comes from customer renewals, and how to do so in the organizationIf you want more opportunities to go in-depth on sales for open source companies — and to discuss sales and other aspects of business development with other founders, join us May 27th and 28th in Paris at Open Source Founders Summit.

In this episode of The New Stack's On the Road show at Open Source Summit in Austin, Matt Yonkovit, Head of Open Source at Percona, shared his thoughts on how economic uncertainty could affect the open source ecosystem. Open source, of course, is free. So what role does the economic play in whether or not open source software is contributed to, downloaded and used in production? “Generally, open source is considered a bit recession proof,” Yonkovit said. But that doesn't mean that things won't change. Over the past several years, the number of open source companies has increased dramatically, and the amount of funding sloshing around in the ecosystem has been huge. That might change. And if the funding situation does change? “I think the big differentiator for a lot of people in the open source space is going to be the communities,” Yonkovit said. When we talk about having ‘backing,' it's usually in reference to financial investors, but in open source the backing of a community is just as important. In the absence of deep pockets, a community of people who believe in the project can help it survive — and show that the idea is really solid. If you look back at the history of open source, Yonkovit said, it's about people having an idea that inspires other people to contribute to make it a reality. Sometimes those ideas aren't commercially viable, even in the best of times — even if they do get widespread adoption. The only thing that's changing now is that financial investors are going to be a bit more picky in making sure the projects they fund aren't just inspirational ideas, but also are commercially viable.
