Dresden Files is a favorite book series in Saul and Jolene's home. There happens to be two RPGs using the Fate system to run your very own Dresden Files game. In this episode, Saul and Jolene geek the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher and the Urban Fantasy genre in general. Saul discusses the many times he as run his own version of Dresden he dubs, Monterey Dresden since he uses Monterey Bay as the setting for his games. Saul has made 3 separate adventures and run each one at least 3 times or more at cons and at home games. So if you have read any urban fantasy books or Dresden Files and want or thought about running a RPG in that kind of setting, this episode is for you. ### Why do we need mechanics for it? If it doesn't exist in the mechanics, it's not part of the game. Without rules, it's all make-believe and agreements (the rules are an agreement as well, but one that is external to us). ### Use the old mechanics in new and novel ways (3:45) You want to make meeting a new monster more exciting? Add the template "unknown" to every encounter with a new creature. Eran used the chase sub-system from [Savage Worlds](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/102528/Savage-Worlds-Deluxe-Explorers-Edition?affiliate_id=29668) to simulate a search of a haunted fort (there's also a chase in [Curse of the Crimson Throne](https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Curse_of_the_Crimson_Throne)) For pathfinder or D&D: Add new feats/conditions and bonuses, or reasons to gain advantages and disadvantages. A necromancer who walks around with her zombie dad; techincally a Warlock with the Ranger Beastmaster archetype. ### Add new sub-mechanics to support new narrative concepts (9:50) In [PbtA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powered_by_the_Apocalypse) games you create a custom move. This can be tricky, so many rulebooks suggest guidelines. Psionics in D&D 3rd edition, Monks in virtually every game system ever. Managing a rebellion in [Hell's Rebels](https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Hell%27s_Rebels). Having many subsystems is not encouraged. It makes it tricky to maintain game balance, and keeping things clear and fair for everyone. ### Take mechanics that specialize in the things you want, from other systems (16:00) The Madness Meters from [Unknown Armies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unknown_Armies) Long term injuries in Fate and/or [Mistborn Adventure Game](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/97476/Mistborn-Adventure-Game-Digital-Edition?affiliate_id=29668). The [stress system from Fate](https://fate-srd.com/fate-core/stress-consequences). Adding a new mechanic is disruptive to the game balance as intended by the game designer. Aim to only do this with a system you know very well. [The Dresden Files RPG](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/80984/Dresden-Files-RPG-Your-Story?affiliate_id=29668); [Dresden Files Accelerated](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/213844/Dresden-Files-Accelerated?affiliate_id=29668); Find more about Dresden Files in our episode about [top selling RPGs](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/35e72b2e691a26/). [Skill Challenges in D&D 5](http://www.dmsguild.com/product/242206/Almost-Heroic-Presents--Skill-Challenges) ### Tell about it, away from the table (25:30) If it's around the table, we expect mechanics; if it's in emails, or a post, we're fine with reading a story. However, the default should be to [act during the game](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/35dc2e1458f9c0/), so it's better to use this tecnhique only after consideration. ### Taking the load off (27:50) Uri - play to your parties strengths, paladin as a wall of Remove Disease. This is the finale episode of Death Masks, and RoShawn is very concerned about how this book ends. Her concern is understandable. The Knights treats the coins like they're radioactive, and say that touching one is a contract you never get out of, and here Harry goes slapping his hand over one. Was it for a good reason (to protect a child)? Sure. But like, come on dude, you couldn't have stepped on it with your boot instead? Tsk tsk. There's a lot of little surprises in these last three, but one of the biggest is the reveal of at least part of Marcone's secret. He's got a little girl in a coma tucked away in a long-term care hospital, and he goes to see her all the time. He wanted the shroud for her, in the hopes that it would make her well again. Although it doesn't seem to work right away, Harry gives him 3 days to try it and then he has to return it to the church. But Marcone never tells Harry who the girl is, so we still don't know the story there. I really enjoy this book, and I'm a little sad that it's over, but I'm interested to see what RoShawn thinks of the short stories that are coming up. Here are the links to the ones we're doing. Two can be read for free on Butcher's website, the last is part of a collection you have to buy: Restoration of Faith (takes place before Storm Front): http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden/side-jobs/restorationB is for Bigfoot (takes place between Fool Moon and Grave Peril): http://amzn.to/2FQKocHVignette (takes place between Death Masks and Blood Rites): http://www.jim-butcher.com/books/dresden/side-jobs/vignette/Also, I want to leave you all the link to check out the new Dresden Files RPG project called "Friends Like These" that Megan Tolentino is doing on her podcast The Redacted Files!
