"Milestone" It all started over 50 years ago in Florida and decades later with sales of close to 25 million albums under their musical belts, 38 Special remain one of the most enduring rock and roll bands of all time. Formed in the early '70s by the core unit of Don Barnes and Donny Van Zandt, 38 Special from the very beginning evinced a steely work ethic. It also demonstrated their versatility--although they were a hard playing southern rock band, they were able to shape shift perfectly and found themselves opening for everyone from Peter Frampton to Kiss and appearing on bills with everyone from Triumph to AC/DC to Motorhead. The '70s were a dogfight for the band who put out great albums like Special Delivery and Rockin' Into The Night, but they felt they were grinding out the yardage and just trying to survive. MTV hits in the '80s like "Caught Up In You" and "If I'd Been The One" changed everything and albums like Tour De Force and Special Forces changed everything and made them bona fide superstars. Although Barnes remains the only original member, the band has recently put out their first new album in 21 years called Milestone and they're playing 100 shows a year across the country. Barnes is a lovely guy and this is a great conversation about persistence and endurance. Ronnie Platt's journey to becoming the lead vocalist of rock legends Kansas defies conventional music industry narratives. At 52, after decades behind the wheel of a Chicago delivery truck, he stepped into the spotlight previously occupied by one of rock's most distinctive voices, Steve Walsh. Here's a look back at episode one and our conversation with Jim Peterik.  ABOUT JIM PETERIKSinger, songwriter, guitarist, and keyboardist Jim Peterik is best known as a founding member of the band Survivor and the co-writer of their Grammy-winning double platinum #1 hit single, “Eye of the Tiger.” But that's only the tip of the iceberg. Thirty-five of Jim's songs have appeared on the Billboard Pop chart, including seven Top 10 singles. His first major success came when his original band, Ides of March, took the Peterik-penned “Vehicle” to the #2 position on the Pop chart in 1970, spawning cover versions by Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey. After a stint as a solo artist with Epic Records, Jim formed Survivor in 1979, penning a string of hits for the band, including “I Can't Hold Back,” “High On You,” “The Search is Over,” “Burning Heart,” and “Is This Love.” While still writing hits for his own group, Jim forged a successful partnership with the members of 38 Special, co-writing classic songs, including “Rockin' Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” and “Caught Up In You.” Widely respected as a top-notch collaborator, Jim has co-written successful songs with a number of artists, including the Beach Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, Cheap Trick, the Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Mindi Abair. The long list of those who have covered his compositions includes Paul Anka, Gloria Gaynor, Tony Orlando, Reba McEntire, Larry Gatlin, Blackhawk, and The Outlaws. He is the co-author, with Dave Austin, of Songwriting for Dummies.

Spanning more than four decades as an educator, Master Teacher Bruce Becker has been bringing forward unique concepts in developing “The Flow”, getting his students to understand the natural principles of the physical body's interaction with the drum set. Through the years Top Drummers like David Garibaldi, Tris Imboden, Mark Schulman, Daniel Glass, Glen Sobel, have sought his guidance.  Bruce Becker co-led the David Becker Tribune for 35 years recording 10 CDs.  Bruce has conducted master classes all over the world and most recently has been a regular contributor to Drumeo creating the very successful Drum Technique Made Easy course. He is the author of “Puzzles Rhymes and Riddles” and the DVD “Concepts and Philosophies”. It's a classic rock twofer this week! First up is Don Barnes of 38 Special. Next year the band will be celebrating 50 years and they're still as strong as ever. Their peak 80s period rivals anyone's with a bunch of hits that are still beloved. Don discusses the stories behind the songs, touring today, his lost solo album and much more. Then we get to hear from original Foghat drummer Roger Earl. Roger's the last man standing, but is also performing a bunch of shows every year.
