India's Solar Revolution Is Bringing Cheap Energy To Millions | Ep257: Harish Hande

Cleaning Up. Leadership in an age of climate change.

The energy system is not about supply and exports and generation and distribution. It's about how we use energy in our daily lives and workplaces. The so-called energy trilemma, affordability versus reliability versus environmental performance looks very theoretical in the boardrooms of an NGO or a consulting company. But it's not theoretical at all for someone struggling to run their life, do their job and pay their bills. What we need is a system focused on usage, not on supply. Joining Michael on Cleaning Up this week is Harish Hande, a Bangalore-based social entrepreneur, co-founder and CEO of the Selco Foundation, which focuses on decentralized solar energy solutions for underserved communities. A graduate of IIT Kharagpur with a master's and PhD in energy engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Harish has over three decades of grassroots experience using sustainable energy to drive poverty reduction in rural India. In 2011, he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for his efforts to make solar power accessible and affordable for the poor through innovative, livelihood‑linked energy services. Leadership Circle: Cleaning Up is proud to be supported by its Leadership Circle. The members are Actis, Alcazar Energy, Arup, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Cygnum Capital, Davidson Kempner, Ecopragma Capital, EDP, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, Schneider Electric, SDCL and Wärtsilä. Harish Vasudevan deconstructs the complexity of digital marketing, arguing that it is simply "direct marketing on steroids". By focusing on the "Holy Grail" of one-on-one communication and simplifying the customer journey to its basic essence, businesses can stop wasting money on flashy tools. The key is to balance data with human instinct, avoiding the "last-click" trap that ignores the long road a consumer travels before buying. Many marketers are "driving into lakes" by following data blindly. Harish Vasudevan provides a refreshing perspective on metrics, urging non-marketers to start with questions rather than spreadsheets. From the enduring power of email (the "roach" of marketing) to the new "black boxes" of AI search, this conversation is a guide to navigating the digital arc without losing your business intuition.Jagged with Jasravee is facilitated by Jasravee Kaur Chandra. What if the real fix for rising anxiety isn't more hustle, but more human connection? We sit down with eminent psychiatrist Dr. Harish Shetty to map the sweeping changes in Indian mental health; from moving care back into families to building true multidisciplinary teams, and the stubborn gaps that still block access in elite hospitals and workplaces. The throughline is urgent and hopeful: disconnection is making us sick, and practical reconnection can help us heal.Across a lively, story-rich episode, we discuss how legal reforms like the Mental Health Act and the decriminalization of suicide reshaped rights, why stigma still persists in places, and how support groups quietly outperform expectations with fewer relapses and stronger daily functioning. Dr. Shetty makes a compelling case for people-first care: psychiatrists, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, and social workers working as equals, meeting patients where they live, not just where we bill.We also explore culture and tech with clear eyes. Films can teach at scale, while social media can either prey on loneliness or act as the science journal of the common person, carrying weekly, stigma-busting posts from all of us. AI chatbots may soothe in the short term but can't replace intimacy or safety, especially for those in crisis. Instead, Dr. Shetty outlines a layered ecosystem, from befrienders and ambassadors to therapists and psychiatrists-that scales human contact. Along the way, we blend Western therapies with yoga, Vipassana, and local rituals learned in disaster zones, showing how cultural competence builds trust and lasting change.Stay to the end for a simple 'mental first aid box' you can build today - safe friends, a good book, honest venting, long walks, and elemental rituals that reset the nervous system. If this conversation resonates, share it with someone who needs perspective, subscribe for more people-first mental health, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway so we can keep the dialogue growing.Follow on Instagram @detangle_by_kinjal

Imagine an engineer who's gone from writing code to building a venture-backed startup—now creating AI-powered tools tailored for fashion brands in New York. That's Harish Chandramowli, Co-Founder of Flaire. His journey is a compelling example of the kind of leadership, innovation, and resilience we highlight on the Breakfast Leadership Show. With a twelve-year engineering career at organizations like MongoDB, Bloomberg, and Johns Hopkins, Harish made the leap into entrepreneurship by co-founding Flaire—an ERP platform that fuses artificial intelligence with user-centered design for retail. What makes Harish's story stand out is his ability to blend deep technical expertise with the gritty, hands-on realities of scaling a business. Whether he's designing smarter code-review workflows (like Greptile, which dramatically reduces dev feedback cycles) or jumping into client sales conversations, Harish brings a unique perspective. He's learned firsthand how to build high-performing remote teams rooted in trust, and how small, strategic process bets can drive sustainable growth. Harish Chandramowli grew up in a small town in India. The goal was simple early on - study well, go to university, and get a job. After undergrad, he realized he can do so much more, eventually coming stateside to get his masters, and meet a ton of really smart people over the last 10 years. Outside of tech, he is a broadway show fanatic, seeing 1-2 on a regular basis. He also follows Manchester United, which can be difficult watching the lose on the regular.Harish used to work for MongoDB, and spent some time on call and in the weeds. At that time, he realized how much data is used by a business. When he eventually supported the fashion industry, specifically the back office, he wanted to build a solution to make the lives of those back office individuals as easy as possible. This is the creation story of Flaire.SponsorsFull ScalePaddle.comSema SoftwarePropelAuthPostmanMeilisearchLinkshttps://www.flairesoftware.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/scharish/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story-insights-from-startup-tech-leaders/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

What happens when a cybersecurity engineer walks into a fashion boutique? For Harish Chandramowli, it sparked an idea that's now helping small fashion brands save time, money, and sanity. A chance observation in a New York store became a mission to untangle problems in inventory, communication, and operations many brands struggle with. In this episode, I speak with Harish, founder of Flair Software, about how he went from working at Bloomberg and MongoDB to building a platform that fixes the messy back-office problems fashion brands face. Harish explains why seasonal inventory is a high-stakes game, how communication breakdowns can cost thousands, and why he built his solution to integrate with Shopify instead of competing against it. Tune in now to learn more. --- Listen to the podcast here: From Cybersecurity to Fashion Tech with Harish Chandramowli Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. We have a lot of technological advances, a lot of digital technology, and a lot of the efforts around it have been used primarily around digital products, primarily around some of the platforms and everything else, but there's also an aspect that I'm hopeful around that really takes some of the digital technology that we have and uses it to enhance the physical products and the actual life that we have outside of our computers in real life. My guest today, Harish Chandramowli, is the founder of Flaire Software and he has some interesting solutions for the fashion industry and other kind of inventory-related pursuits. ---   Harish, welcome to the program.   It's a pleasure to be here.    Thank you for joining us. Now, first of all, kind of have your feet in both worlds, whether it be kind of our technological world as well as the world of fashion, the world of some of these in-real-life types of pursuits. Tell me a bit about your story, where you started and how you came up with the idea, what you observed that led to Flaire Software.   Yeah. Just taking a step back, I am not from fashion industry. It's all pretty new to me. I did my master's in cyber security actually in Johns Hopkins, then I worked as security engineer in a bunch of very data-related platforms like Bloomberg, MongoDB. And MongoDB was my last gig where I primarily started as cloud security engineer but moved on to like an Atlas dedicated team where you see how lot of different people use databases. And, interestingly, there are a lot of retail companies using databases very heavily. That made me more and more curious on how software is being used in retail industry and why database is like one of the biggest line expenditures. On top of that, when I was looking into ERPs, Oracle is one of the biggest player in the ERP market, which made me even more curious on what this space is. What happens around here? Why is a database company spending so much on an ERP, on like a data workflow?    Yeah.   This kind of made me curious but, again, it was more like I don't think I was into fashion or any of those things. I went to this store called ONS in Soho. It's a great store you should check out if you are ever in like downtown area in New York.    What's the store called again?   ONS.   Okay.   Orange, Naples, San Diego. So if you go to Soho and like downtown in the fashion districts, you will notice a lot of these small, small brands which is not your typical H&Ms or Zara.   Yeah.    So I was there, I was actually listening to their team meetings, talking a lot with their founder. I was looking at how they are operating in the back office. The first thing that stood out to me is that fashion as a whole uses a lot of software. One aspect of it which we are all familiar with is designing the fashion, like the threading, modeling and like the cut and everything. Another easier to relate option is like e-commerce site, where you list,

Lex chats with Harish Natarajan - Practice Manager, Financial Inclusion and Infrastructure, Finance, Competitiveness & Innovation at the World Bank, and Carlos Brandt - The Senior Advisor for Pix at the Central Bank of Brazil. Together they discuss the remarkable success of Pix, Brazil's real-time payment system, which now sees over 6 billion transactions per month and is used by more than 90% of the adult population and 80% of companies. Lex explores how Pix was created by the Central Bank of Brazil with strong public-private collaboration, backed by regulatory authority and supported by a co-creation model with stakeholders. Key to its adoption were a low-cost centralized infrastructure, clear branding, mandatory participation by large banks, and a robust national communication strategy. Globally, Pix is seen as a leading example of fast payment system deployment, driven by the central bank acting as a neutral coordinator and scheme owner. Lex also examines the technical architecture, built in-house by a surprisingly small team of 55–65 people, and how scalable infrastructure and extensibility have enabled rapid growth and innovation. NOTABLE DISCUSSION POINTS: 1. Pix achieved mass adoption through public-private co-creation and legal mandate:Pix now processes over 6 billion transactions per month, with 90% of Brazil's adult population and 80% of businesses actively using it. Its success stems from a strategic legal mandate in 2013 granting the Central Bank regulatory and operational authority over retail payments. The Central Bank then led a co-creation process involving both public and private stakeholders through the Pix Forum, fostering alignment, inclusivity, and strong network effects.2. A lean but powerful team built a nation-scale real-time payments system:The Pix infrastructure was built entirely in-house by a relatively small team, 30-40 people for the technical infrastructure layer and around 25 for the payment scheme layer. It operates 24/7 with real-time settlement and uses centralized infrastructure separate from Brazil's traditional large-value payment rails. This centralized, purpose-built architecture dramatically lowered costs and enabled rapid rollout.3. Strategic communication and mandated participation drove adoption at scale:The Central Bank led a national communication campaign to build trust, establish a strong brand identity, and educate the public. Simultaneously, it mandated major banks (with over 500,000 active accounts) to join Pix, triggering widespread voluntary adoption from smaller PSPs. The rollout included a restricted pilot phase and emphasized user-friendly features like QR codes and aliases to boost convenience and usage from day one. TOPICS Pix, Central Bank of Brazil, World Bank, Visa, Citibank, M-Pesa, Alipay, SPI, fintech, payments, PSP, API, Fast Payments, Payments Infrastructure, PayTech ABOUT THE FINTECH BLUEPRINT

On this episode of Talking Away The Taboo, Shirel Korobkin, joins Aimee Baron, MD to talk about... -her deeply personal fertility journey -the stillbirth she experienced four years ago, a recent miscarriage, and the ongoing pain and resilience that define life after loss -the powerful parallels between her own struggles and the journey of the Jewish people in Egypt -what it means to seek liberation while still walking through grief -tangible ways to care for yourself and “fill your cup” this holiday season—especially if your heart feels heavy during a time that celebrates freedom and renewal More about Shirel:  Shirel, with a background in colour management and graphic communications, made Aliyah (moved) to Israel in 2020. During her first few months as a new immigrant (olah chadashah), Shirel discovered she was pregnant. After a healthy pregnancy, at 26 weeks, Shirel found out there was no heartbeat and had to deliver her baby. Shirel felt she had no one to turn to for support. Shortly after her loss she moved to a remote city with no English-speaking resources, friends, or family, which created a void for the support she desperately sought. She found IWSTHAB who helped guide her through her loss, a pregnancy after that loss (PAL), and eventually welcoming a healthy rainbow baby. Shirel currently resides in Harish, Israel, and is very involved with developing events and support for the English-speaking community there. She is very grateful to be working with IWSTHAB and looks forward to giving back to the very same community that helped her through her most difficult moments. Shirel understands the challenges new immigrants and members of English-speaking communities face while navigating their fertility journeys in Israel and looks forward to providing support with compassion, empathy, and understanding.
