Il dit que la guerre entre la Russie et l'Europe a déjà commencé. Il souhaite envoyer un missile nucléaire sur Berlin. Intellectuel russe, proche des sphères du pouvoir, Sergueï Karaganov multiplie les déclarations chocs à l'égard du Vieux Continent, et semble davantage prêcher pour une Troisième Guerre mondiale que pour une paix en Ukraine. Avec quel poids au sein du Kremlin ? « Notre véritable adversaire est bien l'Europe. » « Cette guerre ne prendra fin qu'avec une défaite morale et politique de l'Europe. » L'Europe, « redevenue l'expression la plus absolue du Mal qui ronge l'humanité. » Tels sont les mots crus que Sergueï Karaganov a lâchés au début de ce mois de décembre 2025 sur la première chaîne de télévision russe, et que la revue Le Grand Continent a traduits en français. Une intervention évidemment destinée aux Européens, qui, selon lui, n'ont plus assez peur de la Russie. Pour cet intellectuel russe, « une façon de remettre les pendules à l'heure ce serait de se livrer à un tir d'arme nucléaire », relate Igor Delanoë, directeur adjoint de l'Observatoire franco-russe. « Ce serait un tir de démonstration. Le but ne serait pas de raser Kiev ou Varsovie. Mais sa grande théorie, c'est qu'il faudrait réinstiller la peur. » Premier holà du Kremlin, qui nuance de fait l'influence de Karaganov : « C'est dans cette séquence-là qu'il a été manifestement recadré par la diplomatie russe. Elle lui a demandé de lever le pied sur ces éléments de langage », ajoute le chercheur à l'Iris. Toujours est-il que cette escalade verbale coïncide avec l'escalade de ce qu'on appelle la guerre hybride. En cette fin d'année, la Russie est accusée d'incursions de drones, d'avions de chasse et même de sabotages à la bombe. Le tout dans le territoire de l'Union européenne. La frange radicale d'une galaxie de commentateurs mainstream Sergueï Karaganov a une voix qui porte, mais dont il faut nuancer la portée. Le politologue n'est ni porte-parole du Kremlin, ni conseiller officiel. Il s'inscrit dans une nébuleuse de commentateurs, journalistes, intellectuels et autres propagandistes. Parmi eux, beaucoup se réclament proches de Vladimir Poutine. La prudence reste donc de mise. « C'est très difficile de savoir qui a véritablement l'oreille de Vladimir Poutine », explique Cyrille Bret, chercheur associé à l'Institut Jacques Delors sur les enjeux relatifs à la Russie. « Ça participe d'ailleurs à la puissance du président russe : il ne laisse pas son entourage cartographié. » Une chose est sûre : Sergueï Karaganov fait partie de l'élite russe. Il est reconnu pour son expertise sur la politique internationale. Aujourd'hui président d'honneur du bureau du Conseil pour la politique extérieure et de défense, il a une longue carrière de chercheur et de conseiller depuis les années 1980. En fait, il est l'un des intellectuels qui ont le mieux réussi la transition entre l'ère soviétique et celle de la Fédération de Russie. Mais son discours radical n'en reste pas moins mainstream à Moscou. S'il a voix au chapitre, c'est parce qu'il sert le régime, comme l'indique Cyrille Bret : « La première vocation d'une voix telle que celle de Karaganov ou de [Alexandre] Douguine, ou d'autres théoriciens, c'est d'abord de faire entendre la voix de la Russie. La Russie considère qu'elle a été réduite au silence. Et c'est pour cette raison que des déclarations fracassantes servent l'intérêt national russe tel que Karaganov l'interprète : faire entendre la vision proprement russe, non occidentale, des relations internationales et des rapports entre la Russie et l'étranger. » De la doctrine Karaganov à l'eurasianisme 2022 a été une rupture pour Karaganov. Après l'invasion russe de l'Ukraine, il se détourne complètement de l'Occident, qu'il considère minoritaire. L'heure est à « une majorité globale » dirigée par la Russie. Son mépris pour l'Europe s'accentue tellement qu'il prône une stratégie sino-russe. Au point de devenir un chantre de l'eurasianisme. « Il appelle même à déplacer la capitale du pays pour matérialiser ce tournant ! », note Igor Delanoë. « Il veut bâtir une nouvelle capitale en Sibérie, de l'autre côté de l'Oural, qui permettrait d'ancrer dans la géographie ce tournant avec une capitale orientale au sens géographique du terme. » S'il veut laisser tomber l'Europe, c'est parce que, selon lui, le libéralisme a fait son temps. Les démocraties ne sont bonnes qu'à s'écrouler. L'Occident s'enfonce dans la décadence par la surconsommation, la mondialisation et le transhumanisme. Lui, décrit la Russie comme un empire asiatique. Finalement, le seul intérêt que Sergueï Karaganov continue de voir en Europe, c'est son vœu historique de récupérer les anciennes parties de l'Union soviétique. Il a même donné son nom à ce courant : la doctrine Karaganov. Elle postule que la Russie doit défendre les droits des ethnies russes dans les pays voisins. Un discours que partage Vladimir Poutine. When the University of Victoria women's cross country team claimed a team bronze medal at last year's U Sports Canadian University Championships, it marked the first time in 13 years that the Vikes had climbed onto the national podium. Claiming bronze individually that same day was Madelyn Eybergen, a breakout star at the University of Windsor, who had entered the season as a complete unknown. Eybergen discovered distance running only a year earlier after injury woes put an end to a promising varsity high-jump career. At the time, both feats seemed like crowning achievements: a return to form for the once-dominant Vikes program after several years of steady rebuilding under new head coach Hilary Stellingwerff, and an incredible cap to her career as a Lancer for Eybergen, who was set to wrap up her time in Windsor and pursue graduate studies in kinesiology elsewhere.Fast-forward to this past weekend in Sherbrooke, Que., however, and the 2025 iteration of the U Sports Championships would see both the Vikes and Eybergen achieve even greater heights, topping the podium with gold medals in the team and individual competitions, respectively. The biggest difference a year later?
