CME Evolution in the Structured Heliosphere and Effects at Earth and Mars During Solar Minimum by Erika Palmerio et al. on Tuesday 13 September The activity of the Sun alternates between a solar minimum and a solar maximum, the former corresponding to a period of "quieter" status of the heliosphere. During solar minimum, it is in principle more straightforward to follow eruptive events and solar wind structures from their birth at the Sun throughout their interplanetary journey. In this paper, we report analysis of the origin, evolution, and heliospheric impact of a series of solar transient events that took place during the second half of August 2018, i.e. in the midst of the late declining phase of Solar Cycle 24. In particular, we focus on two successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and a following high-speed stream (HSS) on their way towards Earth and Mars. We find that the first CME impacted both planets, whilst the second caused a strong magnetic storm at Earth and went on to miss Mars, which nevertheless experienced space weather effects from the stream interacting region (SIR) preceding the HSS. Analysis of remote-sensing and in-situ data supported by heliospheric modelling suggests that CME--HSS interaction resulted in the second CME rotating and deflecting in interplanetary space, highlighting that accurately reproducing the ambient solar wind is crucial even during "simpler" solar minimum periods. Ep 263 Guest: Valentina Zharkova Headline: What does a Solar Minimum Mean to Temperature?   The sun is going through a stage known as a solar or Maunder Minimum. This is where the solar activity that ignites solar flares or sun spots has decreased. It’s a normal cycle and one that has been linked to the mini ice age that lasted more than 50 years starting in the mid-1600s.   According to space weather since 2015, the number of days without a recordable sun spot has been rising year over year. NOAA, NASA and others all appear to agree the sun is entering a solar minimum phase.   What it means is open to interpretation because as Professor William Happer pointed out when I asked him about the growing number of people and agencies that suggest a solar minimum could lead to a cooling off period, he directed me the Danish proverb: “It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future.”   It has been suggested that mathematics can establish patterns and back them up with empirical evidence to support a prediction. His process uses computer software, Web Bots, to aggregate vast amounts of written text from the internet by categories delineated by emotional content of the words. The field has been expanding ever since its birth in 1997. There are currently many practitioners of Predictive Linguistics, but no one has garnered the reputation and attention as Clif High, it’s founder. His process uses computer software, Web Bots, to aggregate vast amounts of written text from the internet by categories delineated by emotional content of the words. The field has been expanding ever since its birth in 1997. There are currently many practitioners of Predictive Linguistics, but no one has garnered the reputation and attention as Clif High, it’s founder. His famous prediction in June 2001 which projected “a major ‘tipping point’, that is a ‘life-changing event’ with aspects of ‘military and accident’ that would forever change the way we live to occur inside of 90 days” raised his profile amongst government officials, alternative media, researchers and scholars. Since his first high profile prediction of the events of 911, he has been credited for predicting many other events such as the anthrax attack in Washington, the crash of American 587, the Columbia disaster, the Northeast Power outage, the Banda Aceh earthquake and more recently, Trump’s victory in the national election. High will be the first to admit that not all of his predictions will come true. He gives various reasons for why predictions may or may not be accurate. However, depending on the nature of the prediction, his work over the last 20 years has shown to come true at least 50% of the time and statistically higher for other categories of analysis. By Mac Slavo It isnâ??t the lack of activity that is terrifying those who study the sun, itâ??s what happens next that worries them all. There would be nothing any of us could do if the sunâ??s activity decreases to the point that it causes the outermost atmospheric layer to collapse. No amount of taxation in the name of â??global warmingâ??will save anyone on earth from this outcome. But first, scientists have to worry about the sun reaching â??solar minimumâ?? and the possibility of losing the outermost layer of the atmosphere thanks to the rapid cooling. Solar minimum is when the sun goes through a cycle of minimal activity, and right now itâ??s on the verge of reaching this point. Our sun will near solar minimum in about 2019 or 2020. Unlike the name suggests, this lack of solar activity could cause an outer layer of the atmosphere called the thermosphere to contract and itâ??s not entirely clear what the effects of this could be on our planet. The roughly 11-year cycle of the sun is reaching its low point, and soon. This means less energy is going to be released from our star in the form of solar flares, but it will mean we have solar winds to contend with. Professor Yvonne Elsworth at the University of Birmingham says that the next solar minimum could â??be in about two yearsâ?? but before then, the sun is expected to unleash significantly more radiation towards Earth. She also said that this cycle could mean that a â??fundamental change in the nature of the [the sunâ??s magnetic] dynamo may be in progress.â?? And she isnâ??t the only scientist who believes that this could amount to doom and gloom. Her theory is backed up by NASAâ??s Solar Dynamics Observatoryâ??s daily snaps, which have shown a spotless sun for 44 days in a row. Solar minimums are known to spark lots of cosmic ray activity that can penetrate our atmosphere. These cosmic beams cause â??air showersâ?? of particles when they hit our atmosphere. They pose a health hazard to astronauts, and a single stray cosmic ray could cause a satellite to malfunction. As well as wiping out communication systems, a solar blast could down power grids. Itâ??s not entirely clear why low solar activity causes our thermosphere to collapse; or what it might be doing to our planet. Without having any effect on the sunâ??s cycle which will ebb and flow, â??man-made global warming,â?? took some blame. Back in 2008 and 2009 when the sun was going through this same cycle, climate change alarmists claimed that the global warming was â??adding to the cooling and contracting in the upper layer of our atmosphere.â?? â??This is not how it used to be and the rotation rate [of the sun] has slowed a bit at latitudes around about 60 degrees. We are not quite sure what the consequences of this will be but itâ??s clear that we are in unusual times. However, we are beginning to detect some features belonging to the next cycle and we can suggest that the next minimum will be in about two years,â?? Professor Elsworth said.
