Gillian Burles was 39 years old when her breast cancer metastasized to her spine — so severely that her T10 vertebra had to be replaced with a titanium alloy cage. She was living in the Northwest Territories, 1,500 kilometers from the nearest major cancer center, with two young children at home. Her oncologist gave her 18 to 24 months.That was 20 years ago.In this conversation, Gillian talks about what it actually looked like to rebuild her life after that diagnosis — returning to work, raising her kids, completing the Camino de Santiago with her husband, and managing HER2+ metastatic breast cancer from a small city in Northern Canada. She also shares the mantra that has stayed with her since the beginning: averages are the abstraction, variation is the reality. If you're newly diagnosed and struggling to see past the statistics, this one is worth your time.Heather was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at 26 and has now been living with the disease for more than 25 years. The Cold War Didn't End – Paul Jay

Director Paul Jay discusses his upcoming documentary How to Stop a Nuclear War, featuring Daniel Ellsberg's final interviews before his death. In conversation with Cole Smith, a former Air Force nuclear missile operator, Jay explains why Ellsberg's journey from Cold War hawk to whistleblower provides the perfect lens for understanding our current nuclear crisis. The discussion covers Cold War lies, the risks of AI-controlled nuclear systems, and concrete steps toward disarmament, including phasing out ICBMs and ending launch-on-warning policies. TranscriptListenDonateSubscribe Cole SmithIt's a privilege to be here, obviously, in a space that's strange for me because I used to work in these silos or ones that were very similar to these. For five years, I was a nuclear missile operator in the Air Force from 2012 to 2017, during which time many journalists, including Geoff Brumfiel, who's here somewhere, did fantastic reporting on some of the shortcomings of the missile force. Anyway, that's a whole other story.It does strike me after the last panel that what we've moved into after lunch is something that is sort of a tone shift in some ways. There's an old quote that you might have heard that a lot of people attribute to Damon of Athens, which is, "Show me the songs of a people, and I care not who writes the laws." I think in some ways, that is not to say that policy is not important, but that one of the ways that we have to move forward on this subject is through the stories that we tell.So, Paul, if you could begin by telling us where you're at with your film. If you could also just catch us up on how you came into your career to be a filmmaker on this subject.Paul JayHi. I think it's a brilliant idea to have the meeting here. Seeing that missile out there. I grew up at a time when I was... I have a young son, he's 13. He's actually up here. I made a deal with him. If he sat through all the panels, he gets to go trail riding in Bentonville.Cole SmithCan I get in on that deal?Paul JayAbsolutely. Please, because I won't get on a bike. He could use some company. So I was around his age during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and I was well aware. I was into newspapers when I was six, seven years old, so I was as scared to death as everyone was during that time. By the time I was in high school, I had quit in grade 10 and never went to university because I was absolutely sure I'd be dead by the age of 20.It's interesting because my film features Daniel Ellsberg. When he worked at RAND Corporation, he was offered a pension, and he laughed and said, "I'm not putting money into a pension fund. We're not going to be here."But by the '90s and the end of the '90s, I was pretty much in as much denial about the risks of nuclear war as most others. Then, in around 2018, I read Dan Ellsberg's book, The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner, and that book scared the shit out of me. I said to myself, "This is the most important book I've ever read in my life because of what's at stake." So, I interviewed Dan, and eventually he agreed that I could make a documentary film featuring him, and so the more I get into the topic, the more I realize how dangerous the moment is.Before we watch the trailer, I would like a promise from everyone. Of course, you're not going to make it, but I'm going to ask anyway. Can everyone please stop saying, since the end of the Cold War? It did not end. The Cold War wasn't just about the Soviet Union. The Cold War was about suppressing domestic dissent, weakening workers' unions. It was about exaggerating the external threat, whether it was the Soviet Union or now China.Listen to the rhetoric of President Trump. Is it different than McCarthy's? Is it different than the 1950s? How about Joe Biden saying he's going to defend Taiwan and risk nuclear war? How is that different than what we heard all throughout the Cold War? The Cold War didn't end. We are in the midst of it, and most of us are looking at the world through the filters that we were taught as children, a fabric of lie after lie after lie.If I had more time, I could give you the whole history of the lies, but Dan Ellsberg asked us with this film, he said directly, he said he thought we had the opportunity to do what the Pentagon Papers did, which is uncover the lies of the nuclear era. And then we also want to propose solutions, which you'll see a little bit teased in the trailer, because I am a clinical optimist. Every rational bone in my body says there's nothing to be very optimistic about, and we'd better face up to this.You know, the danger of the moment we're in, yes, since the Cuban Missile Crisis, and probably far more dangerous because maybe we'll talk a bit about AI. We're at a convergence of the existential threat of climate, the existential threat of nukes, we don't know about new pandemics, and the financial architecture. '07, '08, if you listen to the business community that really knows, '07, '08, it was a whisper of what's coming. It's all coming at the same time.So are we humans going to make it? Well, every rational bone in my body says, probably not. As I said, I'm a clinical optimist, and I really do think we can make it, but we'd better face up to this crazy fabric of bullshit that we swim in.Cole SmithTo pivot back to you, Paul, a trusted voice to me, and obviously to you as well, one of the most trusted voices in terms of patriotism to this country, for me, is Daniel Ellsberg. But one of the things that I come up against as a former nuclear missile operator is when I talk to people under a certain age and tell them what I used to do, they look at me like, "What are you... People still do that?"Not to be disrespectful, but Daniel Ellsberg may fall into that category as well for a lot of Americans, where it's become a name that means a lot to maybe fewer amount of people, which, of course, is all the more reason to make a film about him. But I wonder if you could speak a bit about Daniel Ellsberg, and the question that every filmmaker gets is, why now? And so why is it important to lead into this conversation with his voice, specifically at this point in time?Paul JayWell, first of all, it's not a film about Daniel Ellsberg. It's a film about our current moment, what's at risk, and what we can do about it. My approach, my belief is we cannot really face up to the reality of the risk and what solutions are if we don't get past our Cold War mentality. Because we have such a built-in belief system that's been deliberately fabricated, promoted, and inculcated in Americans, in Canadians, and Europeans, right from 1945, '46, at the very least. The reason Ellsberg is a good way to tell the story, part of the story, is because he was a true believer. Ellsberg was the most militant Cold Warrior you could possibly find. I don't know if you know who Curtis LeMay was, but he was almost on the same page. He didn't want to launch. Curtis LeMay was, for people who don't know, the head of STRATCOM, the guy who actually firebombed Japan, ordered the dropping, and actually engineered the dropping of the nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ellsberg was on his page.And then over the course of his time working at RAND Corporation, advising the Pentagon and the White House during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he started to realize this is all based on lies. They lied about the bomber gap. They said the Soviets had 1,000 nuclear bombers, when the Americans only had about 300, 400. The truth turned out to be completely the opposite.Then they had, and out of that, by the way, I'm going to cover some things pretty fast here, but if you want to know more, I'm around. They created something called the SAGE Radar System that came out of the bomber gap, where, "Oh, they're going to come get us with bombers. We're going to have a radar system in Northern Canada that's going to have BOMARC missiles. When they come in, we're going to shoot them out of the sky because they have the advantage; they have more bombers."First, it was a lie. There were no bombers. Second of all, the bloody thing never worked because they never figured out how to deal with radar jamming. But get this, and how come none of you... Raise one person who has ever heard of the SAGE radar system before. Maybe Matt. Not even Matt. Okay, here's one. Oh, two, three. That's remarkable. I almost never get-Cole SmithYou're in good company today.Paul JayI don't know if you know this, but the SAGE Radar System... Now, the Manhattan Project was the biggest industrial project in the history of the United States, and SAGE cost three times more than the Manhattan Project. Did you know that? I didn't know that until recently. It was a boondoggle. It was a scam. It never worked.Then they have the missile gap. You saw it here. "Oh, they have a thousand. We only have 40." It turned out the Soviets had four. But out of that, they created a program called BMEWS, B-M-E-W-S. This was linked to SAGE, and it was going to have a system that could knock out ICBMs on the way in. Never worked. The whole thing was nonsense. Another in today's dollars, billions and billions of dollars.It's been lie after lie, and you can draw a line from this lying right to the Golden Dome, because the anti-ballistic missile systems... I mean, my line about it is, "It's not about the dome, it's about the gold." These are boondoggles, but they're very dangerous boondoggles because they can destabilize the whole balance of nuclear power. Because the problem... I'm jumping way faster, but we don't have much time. The problem with the Golden Dome is that it's SDI of Reagan, but with AI.So, is it possible, and you know that they've always said it's impossible to hit a bullet, meaning an incoming missile, with a bullet, meaning a missile. Now they're saying, "Oh, no, with AI, now we can hit a bullet with a bullet." But it's an entire lie, because even if you can,

On a frozen winter night in remote Northern Canada, two friends ventured to a deserted golf course for a quiet escape—only to witness something that defied explanation. Out of the pitch-black woods emerged a humanoid figure radiating an intense electric-blue glow, its light flickering between the trees as it moved with unnerving speed. What began as a strange sighting quickly took on a darker meaning, leading to a series of chilling encounters that blurred the line between the physical and spiritual. This is the story of the night a demon glowed blue—and the unseen battle it unleashed. Please pray for Tony's wife, Lindsay, as she battles breast cancer. Your prayers make a difference! Restoring the Underwater Forests with Jon Dickson

Before industrial dredging, clear-cutting, and destructive fishing practices, our rivers and oceans were full of wood. Fallen trees, driftwood, and branches created underwater forests where fish and countless other creatures could thrive. That wood provided shelter, food, and the foundation for entire aquatic ecosystems. Today, much of it is gone, and so are the fish.Marine restoration expert Jon Dickson noticed this loss while working along Europe's coasts and asked a deceptively simple question: if we remove the wood, do we also remove the fish? His answer is the “tree reef,” an artificial reef made from pear trees and other natural materials that replaces destroyed habitat. It is a low-tech, high-impact idea with the potential to revive aquatic life far beyond local waters, and it is deeply connected to the broader regenerative agriculture movement on land and at sea.In this episode, we dive into: The forgotten role of wood in rivers, estuaries, and oceans and why it matters for fish How dredging and “cleaning” waterways destroyed essential aquatic habitats Why restoring fish populations is critical for global ecological balance, including land-based food systems The limitations of many well-meaning marine restoration efforts and how tree reefs succeed where others fail The design, construction, and surprising results of tree reefs How low-cost, replicable solutions could transform restoration at scale Why thinking like an ecosystem is the key to regeneration everywhereIf you have ever wondered how oceans and rivers fit into the future of regenerative food systems, Jon's work might change the way you see both land and sea.More about Jon and Marine Trees:Jon grew up in British Columbia, Canada, where after university, he worked as a forest fire fighter. In the off season, he worked as a polar guide and boat driver in Antarctica, Greenland, and Northern Canada. These seasonal jobs and education were interspersed by backpacking trips; his favourite countries (so far) are Iceland, Mongolia, Uganda, Slovenia, and with a vote for the home team, Canada. Since moving to the Netherlands to work on a PhD, he noticed a distinct lack of driftwood in Europe and decided to see if fish were missing habitat due to lack of wood - and so invented tree-reefs, an artificial reef made of trees to replace destroyed habitat.Agrarian Futures is produced by Alexandre Miller, who also wrote our theme song. How can CEOs prevent political strife and foster a cohesive work environment? Cameron Herold, widely known as the CEO Whisperer, highlights the critical importance of the COO role through his establishment of the COO Alliance, a global network empowering second-in-commands across numerous countries. Drawing from his experience in scaling companies like 1-800-GOT-JUNK, Cameron articulates how COOs are pivotal in steering organizational growth and operational excellence. He advocates for the strategic insight and decision-making autonomy that COOs must possess, emphasizing the need for clear distinctions between C-level roles and other managerial positions to ensure fair compensation and effective leadership. As an author and speaker, Herold stresses the COOs' essential role in transforming visionary ideas into sustainable success, a perspective that underscores the value of strategic leadership in navigating the complexities of organizational growth. Key Takeaways The COO role requires strategic insight, P&L responsibility, and the ability to manage functional areas of the business. Distinguishing between the COO and other operational roles like VP of Operations is crucial to emphasize participation in the strategic process. Core values play a critical role in shaping organizational culture, and CEOs need to embody these values to create a cohesive work environment. Investing in leadership development and continuous training for managers is essential for sustainable growth of organizations. Addressing underperforming employees is crucial to maintaining a strong organizational culture and encouraging accountability among team members. CEOs need to be aware of natural transitions a company goes through to effectively scale up employees and maintain growth.   More from Cameron Herold Cameron Herold is a lifelong entrepreneur who was raised to think differently. Growing up in a small town in Northern Canada, Cameron struggled in traditional school due to severe ADD, but his father—an entrepreneur himself—recognized his potential and taught him to reject the idea of a job in favor of building businesses that create opportunity for others. By 18, Cameron had launched 14 small ventures, and by 20, he was running a house-painting franchise with a dozen employees. His twenties and early thirties were spent scaling companies and coaching more than 120 entrepreneurs, including Kimbal Musk, Elon Musk's brother. But his breakout role came when he joined 1-800-GOT-JUNK? as COO, where over six years, he helped grow the company from $2 million to $106 million in revenue, expanding it to four countries and 330 cities—all while cultivating a world-class culture. Today, Cameron is the founder of the COO Alliance, the first-ever peer network dedicated to second-in-command leaders. Inspired by his own experiences in the trenches of hypergrowth and his belief that every visionary CEO needs a powerful operational partner, Cameron created the Alliance to equip COOs with the tools, community, and mentorship they often lack. Known for his hands-on leadership, sharp operational mind, and deep passion for entrepreneurship, Cameron continues to help companies scale and thrive—just as his father once helped him do.   Website: https://cameronherold.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cameronherold/   If you are an experienced CEO looking to grow your company, visit https://www.TheCEOProject.com   You can also reach Jim by email: Jim@TheCEOProject.com   LinkedIn: @theceoproject Instagram: @the_ceoproject Twitter/X: @the_CEO_Project Facebook:  @IncCEOproject

A Word With You

Sometimes when we travel to Indian reservations in North America, we end up on roads that go where not many go. Our Director at the time, our Ojibwe brother, Craig Smith, was on one of those roads. His destination was a remote reserve in Northern Canada. At one point in his 140-mile journey, he noticed a van coming from the other direction, proceeding very slowly. Craig decided to slow down, too. That's when he saw what the van driver had already seen - a beautiful deer by the side of the road. Sadly, one of his rear legs was broken and just kind of dangling limply when he moved. At that point, he saw the rest of the picture that had caused the van to stop in front of the deer. On the other side of the road was a wolf, stalking the wounded deer. It was obvious all the van could do was postpone the inevitable. There was no happy ending for that deer. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Escaping the Stalker of Your Soul." If we could put on God-glasses for even a day and look at our life, we'd see a scene much like my friend saw that day in the Northwood's of Canada. And it would unnerve us. Because we'd see the one who is stalking us, waiting for the chance to have us. He's the one the Bible calls the devil, and he wants your soul. The Bible describes him, not as a wolf, but as a lion who "prowls around...looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8). To ignore or laugh off that warning is to play right into the predator's hands. However smart or strong we may think we are, that vulnerable deer is an all-too-accurate picture of us. Again, the Bible describes us as being "like sheep" (Isaiah 53:6), one of the most vulnerable animals of all. The devil's goal for you can be summed up in one horrible little word - hell. The Bible says that the people who are on that road are "many" and the people who are headed for heaven are "few" (Matthew 7:13-14). That should be unsettling for all of us. Our word for today from the Word of God reveals the life-taker who is counting on having his way with us. But it also reveals the life-giver, who is our hope. In John 10:10 Jesus says, "The thief (that's the devil) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full." The devil seems to offer you life, but he gives you only death. His plan to steal and kill and destroy you is to keep you away from the only One who can save you. That's Jesus. Because Jesus was torn apart for your sin so you don't ever have to be. The only hope that wounded deer had that day was a rescuer. That's your only hope of ever being free from your sins, of being with God in heaven someday. The Bible says that Jesus "was pierced for our transgressions" and "crushed for our iniquities" (Isaiah 53:5). Like the van that temporarily stood between the killer and the deer, all our religion and spirituality can do is postpone the inevitable. There are a lot of nice things that can't save us. Sin is too expensive for religion to pay for. The Rescuer is our only hope. And the Bible says of Him, "By His wounds we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). The devil's plan is simple: keep you busy with anything but Jesus. He doesn't care if it's pleasure, or religion, or work, or education, or family, or people-pleasing. All he needs to do is to keep you from trusting Jesus. All he wants to do is keep you from Jesus until you breathe your last breath. Today, the life-taker and the life-giver are fighting for your soul. That's the tug-of-war you feel in your heart. Please, would you let this be the day you give yourself to the only One who can save you; the Rescuer who refused to save Himself so you could be saved. Would you tell Him, "Jesus, I'm Yours." There's information at our website that will help you be sure you belong to Him. Would you go there today? It's ANewStory.com. I love the way the Bible describes what will happen to you the moment you give your life to Jesus. You're going to love this. It says you will literally "cross over from death to life" (John 5:24). {module Open a chat window - needhim}

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to control thousands of tons of steel, stretching nearly three miles behind you? In this captivating conversation, Willie sits down with Matt Oleski, a train engineer whose decade-long railway career provides a fascinating glimpse into one of North America's most essential yet mysterious professions.Matt shares his journey from construction work to becoming a fully qualified engineer, detailing the rigorous training process and career progression from brakeman to conductor to engineer. You'll discover the astonishing physics behind train operations—like how even empty rail cars weigh 30 tons, and a fully loaded train requires more than a mile to stop. Perhaps most surprising is the confirmation of an old railway warning: "rolling cars don't make noise," as steel wheels on steel rails can move massive weight in near silence.Beyond the technical aspects, this episode explores the profound impact railway careers have on family life. With unpredictable on-call schedules and trips lasting up to 30 hours, Matt credits his wife Shelby's understanding and support as crucial to his success. Their story highlights the delicate balance railway families must maintain and the importance of making time count when at home.The conversation takes fascinating turns through Matt's parallel passions for hunting and fishing in Northern Ontario, including his specialty for turning often-maligned Canadian goose into gourmet delicacies like pastrami and "goose poppers." His enthusiasm for musky fishing reveals how these outdoor pursuits provide necessary mental balance to the high-responsibility demands of railway work.Whether you're curious about trains, outdoor life in Northern Canada, or the human story behind essential infrastructure, this episode delivers authentic insights into a world most people never see. Beneath the expansive North Dakota skies, a transformative mega-project is reshaping the landscape and future of the Red River Valley. The Fargo-Moorhead Flood Diversion Project stands as one of America's most ambitious civil engineering undertakings – a 30-mile channel designed to protect communities from the devastating floods that have repeatedly threatened homes and livelihoods.Gil Gilbert from ASN Constructors takes us behind the scenes of this monumental project, revealing the staggering scale of operations that most observers can barely glimpse from nearby highways. "We're moving 45 million cubic yards of excavation," Gilbert explains, painting a picture of massive earth-moving that would cover the entire NDSU campus with several feet of soil. The $130+ million investment in locally-purchased equipment includes specialized excavators so large they require five separate truckloads just to transport to the site. These machines operate 24/7, accumulating 8,000 hours in just two years before retirement – a testament to their relentless workload.What makes this project particularly fascinating are the extreme challenges overcome through engineering ingenuity. Construction continues year-round despite temperatures plunging to -50°F, where metal components crack under stress and excavation equipment battles ice chunks that can cause $100,000+ in damage with a single impact. The Red River Valley's notorious clay soils present their own obstacles, requiring specialized techniques like discing mud to facilitate drying. Surprisingly, winter operations often achieve higher production rates than summer work, thanks to expertise brought in from mining operations in Northern Canada. The project employs a diverse workforce, including local farmers during winter months, international experts, and NDSU graduates through internship programs.When completed in 2027, this infrastructure marvel will deliver far more than flood protection. The diversion channel will feature recreational trails and parks, creating lasting community amenities alongside its primary purpose of eliminating the need for flood insurance in Fargo-Moorhead. Though designed to be used for flood protection only once every 20-50 years, its daily impact on regional resilience and quality of life represents a blueprint for how modern civil engineering can transform environmental vulnerabilities into opportunities. Nightmares of the Americas: Indigenous Tales

Send us a Text Message.Welcome everybody to Nightmares of the Americas Indigenous Tales.  Today, we're going deep into the icy wilderness of Northern Canada and Alaska and for some reason Michigan to tell the terrifying legend of a creature called Waheela.This elusive creature is said to roam the remote, snow-covered regions of the Northwest Territories, Alaska, and even parts of Michigan that's about 3000 miles. In the remote regions of Northern Canada and Alaska, where snow and ice dominate the landscape, the legend of the Waheela has become more real than lore. In this challenging wilderness, where nature remains powerful and survival is a constant effort, the boundary between myth and reality can sometimes be unclear. In these isolated areas, the Waheela is more than just a tale—many believe it's a real creature that roams the tundra, a predator with deep roots in the land's ancient history.The Waheela is no ordinary wolf. Descriptions of this creature paint a picture of a beast that is both familiar and terrifyingly alien. Imagine a creature with the broad, muscular body of a bear, but with the elongated snout and sharp, deadly teeth of a wolf. Its fur, thick and white as the snow it treads upon, allows it to blend seamlessly into its icy surroundings.In the legends of the Dene and Inuit peoples, the Waheela is not just a large predator, but a creature of immense power, imbued with spiritual significance. It is said to possess abilities that defy explanation—speed that allows it to move through the wilderness like a ghost, strength that enables it to decapitate its victims with a single bite, and an intelligence that rivals that of the most cunning of human hunters. These attributes have led many to believe that the Waheela is more than just an animal—it is a guardian of the wilderness, a spirit of the land that punishes those who disrespect the natural order.Enjoy the show! From Wednesday, January 24, 2024. If you take a compass and follow its pointy little needle, you will end up in Northern Canada but not at the North Pole. If you have a boat, you'll end up on Ellesmere Island wondering where Santa is hiding.    The fact that the rotational north pole of the Earth and the magnetic pole of the Earth don't align means that if you want to actually get to the Earth's rotational North Pole - the one the pole sticks out of on your globe - you have to look up corrections online and veer a little bit in whatever direction the correction happens to be at the moment. Jake was born and raised in Northern Canada. Adventurous and inquisitive, he followed his gut to Hawaiʻi for college as a D1 athlete. During his years at Mānoa, he was taken in by a Molokaʻi family which was where his relationship with Axis deer began—over holidays and summer breaks, alongside multi-generational subsistence hunters. Over the years, his fascination and respect for this animal grew and after founding a research-based non-profit, the Axis Deer Institute, he took on several projects managing Hawaiʻiʻs invasive ungulates. Maui Nui grew out of his passion to create a full-bodied solution that saw Hawaiʻiʻs deer as both a non-native species in need of active population management as well as an incredible food resource whose sustainability and viability needed to be ensured in the long term. For Jake, hunting and environmentalism in Hawaiʻi are inseparable parts of the same set of actions and concerns. Jake as always walks us through his life before now. He was a college and professional Volleyball player, went to school in Hawai'i where he quickly put down roots and started his trajectory towards Maui Nui Venison. I met him hunting with some buddies and have been watching his conservation efforts since.
