In the first of what will be three jam-packed segments, Frank Stoddard remembers going to work on a farm at an extraordinarily young age and how that played into him getting into racing. We then go Busch North racing … then Busch South … then back to Busch North with Stub Fadden, before finally heading to the Winston Cup circuit with Jeff Burton. We then dive into the January 20, 2005 issue of NASCAR Scene. Everybody else is headed for Daytona, while host Rick Houston is living life as a brand-new teacher and Brian France SAYS he isn't looking for a new gig himself as an NFL team owner. NASCAR bans the Hutchens device … and Ryan Newman doesn't like it … a reader REALLY doesn't like Jeff Gordon … a fan maybe likes Michael Waltrip a little TOO much … and Kyle Petty LIKES Janet Jackson's Super Bowl performance. Missed it by *that* much. RFK Racing crew chief Scott Graves joins Davey Segal (6:40) on the heels of Chris Buescher and the No. 17 team coming up 0.001 seconds shy of winning at Kansas, the closest finish in NASCAR Cup Series history. Graves explains the roller coaster of emotions he experienced from thinking they had the win to realizing they didn't, what answers he got from NASCAR when he went to talk to them before leaving the track, the conversation he had with Chris post-race and the photo finish technology the sanctioning body implements. Graves also dives into the speed RFK has shown as of late with four runner-up finishes and how close they and Ford really are to breaking through and running better every week. He also dives into getting his start as a crew chief in NASCAR, working with a then young Chris Buescher, winning the 2015 Xfinity championship together, leaving Roush for Joe Gibbs Racing before ultimately returning and being a part of Ryan Newman's harrowing 2020 crash at Daytona. Plus, why the No. 17 should be one to watch this weekend at Darlington, Graves' passion for fitness, background in racing and why he didn't immediately get into it upon graduating from Texas Tech and why he knows the "what's up brother?!" meme. Davey also discusses the finish that still has everyone buzzing at Kansas, previews throwback weekend at Darlington and Papa Segal pays homage to Bobby Johns as we continue in the month of May.
Veteran crew chief Luke Lambert joins Davey Segal (6:40) on the heels of his first top 10 finish of the 2024 season with rookie Carson Hocevar and Spire Motorsports. He explains why he's been pleased with the start to the season thus far, what it's been like to come into the organization amid the rapid growth and what it's like working with Stephen Doran and Ryan Sparks as Cup crew chief counterparts. Lambert also dives into his background, starting as an engineer back in 2005 with Richard Childress Racing, how the sport and his job(s) have evolved in the nearly two decades since, getting thrusted into the crew chief role midway though the 2011 season, his memorable Championship 4 run with Ryan Newman and RCR in 2014, why he opted to leave the organization for Roush Fenway and how COVID impacted his career trajectory more than you'd expect. Plus, how his passion for engineering blossomed at NC State, working with countless drivers along the way and what's next for him in the sport. Plus, Papa Segal turns the wayback machine on a complicated historical figure and Davey talks Chase Elliott's big win at Texas and looks ahead to the 2.66-mile behemoth of Talladega Superspeedway.

This week, Sadler and The Senator -- but no Shep (as he possibly goes on strike for a second straight week in a futile demand for more wages for less effort, just like the Hollywood writers), dive into this week's episode and talk about a whole host of things, from their joint field trip to what Stanley calls “Darwin's Waiting Room” in criminal court, how the this November's political races are shaping up in Virginia and in the nation and tilting towards Republicans in light of the recent major fumbles of Democrats during Virginia's General Assembly campaign session, and they even discuss how Donald Trump's current ongoing civil fraud trial in New York legal is affecting the upcoming 2024 Presidential contest. In the second segment, Hermie and Bill take you back to their Sadler/Stanley Racing Team's effort on-site at the track for the SMART Modified Series race at the historic Pulaski Motorsports Park this past Sunday, and they sit down with SMART Race Director (and former NASCAR® Race Director) David Hoots and the “Poor Man's Bill France” SMART Series owner Chris Williams to talk about the final four races of the series, and Hermie's hilarious interactions with Hoots during the time when Hermie was a Cup car driver at a NASCAR® race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Then the fun kicks into high gear when the “human enigma”-- the iconic, and the one-and-only Alan Joseph joins the show to talk about the fight for small businesses and skill games in Virginia's burgeoning gambling industry, and he even recounts the famous moment when he actually ran himself owner with his own car! You cannot miss this classic exchange! And in the final segment, Sadler and The Senator recap the their Sadler/Stanley Race Team's results on Saturday night in the NASCAR® Whelen Modified race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, and then on Sunday afternoon at the Pulaski Speedway SMART series race with their legendary drivers, Bobby Labonte and Ryan Newman. Tires went flat, race cars got spun out and hit the wall, engines blew up, and the fickle hand of fate determined the outcomes for their team at each race – but there was no quit in the Sadler/Stanley Race Team. So when Larry The Cable Guy tells you “these guys are good,” he means it, and this episode proves that Larry The Cable Guy is always right! And in the third segment, you must listen to an absolutely hilarious interview that Stanley and Williams have with three young modified racing fans, who give us their take on the Franklin County race, how much they love watching the SMART Modifieds at our local tracks, and they even recount a really funny moment after the race while they were sitting in the Pace O Matic SMART ride-along race car parked at the SMART/SSR Fan Zone. Following up with last week's awesome sit-down with Hermie's brother, NASCAR® great Elliott Sadler, this week's episode of LRTL with Sadler and the Senator focuses on family issues, family values, and explores Hermie's foray into the political arena and his experience as a regular citizen stepping forward to run for elected office. Listen as Sadler details the surprising fight that he must wage not just against his Republican primary opponent on the battlefield of ideas, but also his struggle against the “establishment” wing of his own party who think that Hermie, because he puts the people he hopes to represent ahead of party leadership, is “a Disruptor.” Hear how Senator Stanley defines the word, “disruptor,” how he thinks that politicians who put principles over politics is a good thing for our country's future, and why he believes that the need for strong leaders (and not weak-kneed elitists) is needed more than ever in order to preserve our precious liberty and freedom. Hermie and Bill then discuss the serious injury that they believe is being inflicted upon women's sports by the woke left's trans-athlete effort, and they detail why they believe his primary opponent's cavalier attitude towards the issue is so harmful for our young women who compete in athletics. The fellas finish up the podcast episode by discussing their favorite topics, racing, and the status of their successful lawsuit to protect small businesses in Virginia! They talk about their Southern open-wheel modified race team, SS Racing, and look forward to the upcoming SMART race at Franklin County Speedway on May 26th with their drivers Bobby Labonte and Ryan Newman, and the SMART Series / SS Racing Fan Zone that they are putting on to say a big “thank you” to both their car sponsor and the fans at the race on Friday night at the historic Callaway Virginia track. Y'all come by and see Sadler and the Senator at the race in Senator Stanley's back yard! One guy not on Choppers' bet slip is Kevin Harvick. Eric Jones is a great play for a long shot. Ryan Newman is back, but Steve doesn't want to hear about it. Can Hendrick or RCR end their winless streak at Darlington? Exacta bets that include: Larson, Hamlin and Truex look good. Plus, Corey Lajoie on Friday night might be a play. Legacy MC announces it will be switching to Toyota in 2024. Chris stops by to talk about Martin Truex, Jr's big win at Dover, the lingering concerns about the damage done to Kyle Larson's car at Talladega, and previews Kansas. Heather's final thought is about Ryan Newman's NASCAR return.
Senator Stanley leads off the second segment of the show when he sits down with the Southern Modified SMART Tour Director Chris Williams, his new announcer, the” Mark Twain of Modifieds,” Bob Dillner, and the Tour Flag Man Extraordinaire, Jeff Bunton, for an in-depth and hilarious conversation about everything SMART Tour and the current state of local short track racing, and they even get to talk about the amazing growth and stature of the SMART series both now, and where it is going in the future. Listen as Chris Williams sets up Bob Dillner for some relentless teasing from the Senator about his announcing of the SMART Tour races this year, and then the group welcomes in a true NASCAR® Legend, Former Race Director for the Cup Series and current SMART Series Race Director David Hoots, to hear his perspective on both the history and current state of both modified and stock car racing. But, the first segment of Leaning Right and Turning Left With Sadler and The Senator is electrifying. First, Bill and Hermie discuss how their team of Bobby Labonte, Ryan Newman and Jonathan Cash did during the weekend of racing at Richmond and South Boston, and then Sadler and the Senator address a political “push poll” put out by Hermie's Republican opponent in the nominating contest for the 17th State Senate race that assert facts about Sadler that just may be far from the truth (and way out of bounds) in an attempt to sway voters against Sadler. Hermie responds to each outlandish poll question, and his responses are priceless, and they expose to you, the listener, the dark side of establishment internal politics. As Larry the Cable Guy Says in the intro, grab a cold beer and pull your chair up close to your phone because you won't want to miss this episode of Leaning Right and Turning Left with Sadler and the Senator! In 2022, the Florida Legislature passed a bill titled the Individual Freedom Act. The bill is better known as the Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act, or the Stop WOKE Act, and it has become a cultural flashpoint across the country. The bill seeks to “protect individual freedoms and prevent discrimination in the workplace and in public schools.” While the bill explicitly authorizes “age-appropriate” classroom discussion of topics such as sexism, slavery, and racial discrimination, it prohibits instruction meant to “indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view inconsistent with the principles of individual freedom or state academic standards.” The bill went into effect on July 1, 2022, and it places new restrictions on Florida's public schools, colleges, universities, and corporations.Proponents of the bill argue that aspects of progressive ideology – often referred to as wokeness – are being aggressively pushed on students, parents, and employees, and the effect is tantamount to ideological oppression and indoctrination. Opponents of the bill say that the Stop WOKE Act infringes upon freedom of speech and thought. Several opponents – including prominent organizations like the ACLU and FIRE – have taken to the courts to block or pare back the bill's influence.Ryan Newman serves as General Counsel to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and he is responsible for driving Florida's litigation defense of the Stop WOKE Act in cases such as Pernell v. Florida Board of Governors, Novoa v. Diaz, and Honeyfund.com Inc. v. DeSantis. Please join us as Ryan discusses these cases.Featuring:Ryan Newman, General Counsel, Executive Office of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis
After a two-week hiatus, Sadler and the Senator come roaring back with a must-listen to episode that explores Sadler's huuuge campaign shindig with country music stars and NASCAR® Legend and friend of the podcast Kyle Petty, as well as the Virginia Republican Party shenanigans and interference with the nomination process with Hermie's race for the Virginia State Senate District 17. Listen as Hermie, Bill and their side-kick Shep Moss discuss why the determination of the future of Virginia's next generation of leaders matters at the local political level, and why we fight, and why we all should fight for what is right, just, and good. In the second segment, Sadler and the Senator talk racing, the progress of their open-wheel modified Sadler/Stanley Racing team is making on the track with their legendary drivers, NASCAR® Hall of Famer Bobby Labonte and legend Ryan Newman at the wheel of their two-car race team, and how the NASCAR® season is going after the first four races. The Virginia General Assembly wrapped up its work at a furious pace in order to adjourn “sine die” (latin for “without day”—which means that its now gone from the Capitol, “indefinitely”), with tempers flaring, bills either living or dying, and a still-undecided battle raging over the Virginia State Budget. Hermie and the Senator go over the last days of the 2023 General Assembly session – the ups, the downs, and the still unknowns. They even have an interesting discussion on how Senator Stanley's legislative agenda fared during session, and how a great bill that he sponsored that would have helped students in our rural and urban areas may have actually been killed because of Hermie and Bill's successful lawsuit on behalf of the small business owner and skill games. Hermie and Bill also talk about the status of Hermie's race for the Virginia State Senate, and take a look at the upcoming 2023 SMART and WHELEN open-wheel modified race seasons for Sadler/Stanley Racing with Bobby Labonte and Ryan Newman behind the wheel of their two-car team! In the second segment, Senator Stanley sits down for a compelling political and regional discussion with his friend, Democrat State Senator Dave Marsden. Listen as both senators discuss the philosophical differences between Republicans and Democrats, as well as the issue that transcends party affiliation in Virginia: Regionalism. Bill and Dave even discuss ways that all regions can come together for the betterment of the Commonwealth. And that even though the two senators don't agree on some issues, they still try to work together to solve the issues that all Virginians care about -- like the Envigo Beagles! The LRTL crew returns for yet another episode focused on politics and racing! This week, Hermie and Bill talk about the progress of their lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Virginia, and what's up next for Hermie's legal team as Sadler v. Virginia continues to work its way through the court system, fighting for small businesses throughout the state against government overreach. In the Senator's “Leaning Right Moment,” Stanley and Sadler talk about the upcoming federal congressional election, how government constantly tries to limit your freedoms, and the fact that the Emporia newspaper has just leaked that Hermie will announce that he is running to be the state senator for his area next week! In Sadler's “Turning Left Moment,” Hermie and the Senator discuss all the goings-on at the exciting race weekend at the Martinsville Speedway. From the NASCAR® open-wheel modified race -- where their race team SS Racing had two cars enter with famous drivers Bobby Labonte and Ryan Newman behind the wheel, the controversial victory of Ty Gibbs in the Xfiniti® Race on Saturday, to the incredible finish of the Cup race on Sunday, you just gotta' listen to the former NASCAR® driver and Fox Sports Analyst's perspective on all the wild things that happened at the greatest racetrack ever put on God's Green Earth, the Martinsville Speedway! And in a final special segment on the show, the boys replay a star-studded panel discussion held earlier in race week at Martinsville's New College Institute about the history of racing in Martinsville, with some of the most famous names in motorsports. The stories are simply unforgettable, timeless and funny – this is a “must listen-to” for all race fans. The Leaning Right and Turning Left With Sadler and The Senator is proudly sponsored by Pace-O-Matic, an entertainment company which develops gaming software that players love to play and can use their skills to win, every time. Ladies and Gentlemen, children of all ages! Gather ‘round as Sadler and the Senator relive Hermie's epic wrasslin' match with the one, the only, Pro Wrestling Great's pugilistic progeny and son of Jeff “Double J” Jarrett and Karen Jarrett…..Kody! Joined by everybody's favorite DJ and “plus one,” Shep Moss, the boys provide stout play-by-play and color commentary to the truly fun (and really funny) video of what has now turned out to be the Herminator's “Last Match” (or, is it?) with Krusher Kody! Then after that hilarious turn, Sadler, Senator and The Shep interview Kody's wonderful mom, Karen Jarrett to give her perspective on raising Kody, her take on the backyard wrestling event of the century, and she even gets to answer three different times from each one of these knuckleheads on what its like to live with the loveable and cuddly WWE Hall Of Famer Double J! And, Karen even dishes on the well-kept secret that Hermie can actually cook (well, rice that is…). In Stanley's “Leaning Right Moment,” Hermie and Bill discuss the terrible results of the National Educational Assessment (NEAP) test, that showed significant declines in the past two years in both reading in math for Virginia public school students (the worst decline in the nation), why it happened, and what Gov. Youngkin and Republicans plan to do to turn those scores around in the immediate future. Hermie also discusses with Stanley the alarming fact that the United States may just RUN OUT of its diesel fuel supply in the next thirty days (yep, you heard that right), and what that could mean for gas prices, food prices and supply chain issues nationwide. In Sadler's “Turning Left Moment,” Hermie and Bill discuss how their inaugural season competing in the SMART Modified Racing Series turned out, the last SMART race at Motor Mile, and their upcoming NASCAR® Whelen Modified Race in Martinsville where two expert wheelmen, NASCAR® Hall of Famer Bobby Labonte and NASCAR® legend Ryan Newman, will be piloting the Sadler/Stanley Racing open-wheel modified machines around this historic Virginia track! Yes, you guessed it, this is yet another “can't miss” episode of the LRTL podcast! It's a great conversation recorded earlier during the Racetrack Revival week at the historic North Wilkesboro races, where Team SSR made history with Ryan Newman winning in the #39 car, so give a listen because you are gonna love it! In Senator Stanley's Leaning Right Moment of the show, Bill and Hermie have a good laugh over “The Great Twitter Battle between Sen. Louise Lucas and Va. Attorney General Jason Miyares,” over Louise's pot shot at Miyares, and Miyares' return fire pot shot at Sen. Lucas-- about her Pot Shop! Then, Senator Stanley details his current representation of the Smith family of Loudoun County, and in particular, the father of the child sexually assaulted in the Loudoun County High School bathroom, who was arrested (and branded “a domestic terrorist”) for speaking out and standing up to the Loudoun County School Board for covering up the assault of his child so they could pass dangerous hyper-partisan transgender policies that put his daughter in harm's way. Sen. Stanley gives an in-depth discussion about defending Scott against the unjust charges Loudoun's George Soros-backed prosecutor has levied against him, and recounts their most recent major court victories in getting one of the charges dismissed (obstruction of justice), and having the Court grant Stanley's motion to remove and recuse the politically biased and vindictive prosecutor from further involvement in the pending criminal case against the father. In Hermie's Turning Left Moment, Hermie discusses the big news and long-term impact of Kyle Busch joining Richard Childress Racing, and how this signing could be made even more intriguing for the sport of NASCAR® if Kyle was put into a particularly numbered RCR vehicle that also used to be driven by one of the other bad boys of racing. Sadler also dives into Bubba Wallace's Cup win at Kansas, and the upcoming SMART series race as their SS Racing makes a run for the championship. The Leaning Right and Turning Left With Sadler and The Senator is proudly sponsored by Pace-O-Matic, an entertainment company which develops gaming software that players love to play and can use their skills to win, every time. In the 30th episode of Leaning Right and Turning Left, Hermie and the Senator are “turning left,” to record the events surrounding the return of open-wheel modified racing to the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway, and they sit down with the legendary crew chief for NASCAR® Hall of Famer Junior Johnson, the one and only Jeff Hammond, to talk about the history and future of this hallowed cathedral of racing. They recount the Tuesday night race where their driver, NASCAR® great Ryan Newman gets the checkers for Sadler/Stanley racing in the first race back at the track in over two decades. And, the boys tease what will be a phenomenal interview with the man who was the primary driving force in bringing back racing to North Wilkesboro for next week's episode. In the “Leaning Right” moment, Sadler and the Senator discuss the price of politics, and how some in the political world view this podcast, and the no-holds barred way that Hermie and Bill deliver the unvarnished truth to power, as threatening to the “old boy” political system in Virginia. A historic day for racing and a wild ride for the listener make this episode a must listen! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this week's episode of Leaning Right and Turning Left, Hermie pulls another superstar friend out of his phone book when the boys interview 6-time WWE Women's Wrestling Champion Mickie James! Mickie recounts her road to professional wrestling superstardom, her incredible dual career as a country music star, and both she and The Senator get into a passionate and moving conversation about her Native American heritage as a member of Virginia's historic Mattaponi tribe, when Mickie suddenly realizes that Senator Stanley is her mother's (and other family member's) trial attorney in their ongoing fight for freedom and women's rights with the elders of the tribe who seek to silence their voice and ability for women to participate in tribal government. In this week's Leaning Right moment, the Senator and Sadler discuss more “Left Lunacy” with former Prince Harry's bashing America at the UN, liberal activists demanding that anthropologists stop referring to ancient human remains as either male or female, since they say there is “no way to know how they ‘identified'” when they were alive, the belief by a dopey college professor that a biological male can get pregnant, and even how a former dude being nominated for the NCAA's “female athlete of the year” sets back women's equality in Title IX collegiate athletics. In Hermie's Turning Left moment, both he and his SS Racing Team partner discuss the upcoming and historic return of racing on the asphalt of North Wilkesboro Speedway on August 2nd and 3rd, with NASCAR® great Ryan Newman driving the SSR #39 open-wheel modified on opening night, and their top-tier team modified driver Jonathan Brown driving the car on the second night! And, the guys get yet another message on “Hermie's Answering Machine” that asks them: “who's better?” So pull those belts tight one more time ladies and gentlemen, its time to drop the green flag on another great episode of The Leaning Right and Turning Left with Sadler and The Senator Podcast! Summary: In this week's fact-filled and informative episode, Sadler and the Senator fight back against President Biden's ridiculous claim that it is not his misguided energy policies that are to blame for the nation's high gas prices, but rather it is the small business gas station owners who are to blame for the pain that all Americans are feeling at the pump, even though Biden's Chief Economic Advisor says that these high gas prices are a part of the Democrats' preservation of the new “Liberal World Order”-- whatever the heck that means. As a part of the Senator's “Turning Right Moment,” the fellas welcome one of the most brilliant minds in the United States Congress, Rep. Morgan Griffith (Va-9), to engage in a compelling discussion about the true causes of the outrageous rise in in both inflation and gas prices in America, and what it will take for us all to band together to “Build Back Better, Just Like It Used To Be.” In Hermie Sadler's “Turning Left” racing segment, Bill and Hermie discuss the Nascar® races at Road America in Wisconsin over the past weekend, their part-time driver Ryan Newman's huge win in the SRX Series at Stafford (and Ryan's daughter's wearing of the Sadler/Stanley Racing Sweatshirt on national TV in Victory Lane), the SSR's race team's return to the SMART series at Caraway Speedway that didn't end so well for their driver, their car (that almost flipped over in a wreck) or the team, as well as the race team's new mascot, a rescue kitten found in the parking lot on race day, now named “Jon Boy” after their team's open-wheel modified driver, Jonathan Brown.
