The Albanese government's plan to enforce a higher minimum age for social media use has come under fire as a quick solution to a complex problem. While some experts believe a ban on younger users will protect children from platforms that may contribute to mental illness and eating disorders, others say social media is an important tool for young people to have access to. The Australian government has committed to setting a minimum social media age limit, citing concerns about mental and physical health. Burnet Institute programme director of behaviours and health risks Megan Lim spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

There's doubts a social media ban would prevent youth from accessing the online platforms.  Australia is exploring a ban and has launched an authentication trial, but it's unknown how it will be enforced.  Our Prime Minister has expressed interest in the idea.  But Social media expert Katie Brown told Mike Hosking a ban wouldn't stop kids lying about their age, as generations have done before.  She says young people will find a way to get on to the platforms they want to be on.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the recent decision made by the U.S. Surgeon General to release an official statement on the harm that is being done to teens through the use of social media. It is causing an alarming rise in mental health issues, with studies finding that excessive use of social media has been linked to cyberbullying, disrupted sleep cycles, reduced physical activity, body-image issues, an increase in self-harm, exposure to pornography, and increased rates of depression and anxiety. Sadly, many parents consider themselves helpless to do anything about it. Episode Links In his latest book Hybrid Church: Rethinking the Church for a Post-Christian Digital Age, Dr. White has an entire section on social media as it relates to the church, and how to think Christianly about it. Because it is clear that the church cannot remain silent about the harmful effects that social media has on our society. The New York Times' Glenn Thrush writes: “In 2021, federal prosecutors began examining whether Mr. Gaetz…broke federal sex-trafficking laws, focusing on his relationships with women recruited online for sex, and whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.” But hasn't the damage to Rep. Gaetz's reputation already been done? 3:15pm- On Wednesday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) announced that he has subpoenaed the CEOs of Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft. He explained that the House Judiciary Committee reached out to the aforementioned companies late last year, but they did not comply with requests. In his letter, Rep. Jordan writes, “Twitter recently set a benchmark for how transparent Big Tech companies can be about interactions with government over censorship. The Twitter Files have exposed how Big Tech and the federal government have worked hand in hand in ways that undermine First Amendment principles.” 3:25pm- On Tuesday night, U.S. Senators took part in a classified briefing with Biden Administration officials regarding the mysterious flying objects that have been shot down by U.S. fighter jets over the last week. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told reporters that “95% of what was discussed could be made public.” 3:50pm- Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) has introduced legislation that would create a social media minimum age requirement of 16-years-old for users—explaining that “big tech” companies are neglecting to protect children. 4:00pm- Do you support federal legislation to create a social media minimum age requirement, similar to the bills proposed by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO)? Rich hears from callers. 4:35pm- Rich continues to take calls. The federal government's involvement in most issues typically ends up being problematic—is there any reason for conservatives to deviate from that belief when it comes to social media? 4:55pm- Caller Mark wonders: If Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez were a Republican, would she be hot? 5:00pm- While appearing on Fox News, North Korean defector Yeonmi Park compared her experience at Columbia University with the indoctrination and “brainwashing” she experienced while living in North Korea. 5:25pm- According to a report from Breitbart, Chinese donations to the “University of Delaware soared after the opening of the Biden Institute”—amounting to $6.7 million. Similarly, following the establishment of the Penn-Biden Center, the University of Pennsylvania also saw an increase in monetary donations from China. 5:35pm- While speaking at the World Government Summit, Chairman of the World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab called on a global government to master artificial intelligence…he sounds like a villain from a James Bond film… 5:45pm- The Mystery Movie Clip—have you picked up on this week's theme? 5:55pm- Appearing at a Congressional hearing, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky told Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) that the governmental agency's child masking guidance will not change over time, and instead will be dependent upon the level of infection in a given area. 6:05pm- In a new editorial on Reason.com, David McGarry warns that the federal government is circumventing the 4th Amendment by “purchasing citizens' private market data (PMD) from data brokers without a warrant.” 6:25pm- While appearing at the World Government Summit, Elon Musk warned that the establishment of a world government could lead to the collapse of civilization. 6:50pm- According to reports, the Justice Department will not charge Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) with any crimes.
