Guillermo del Toro adds his own Gothic sensibility to this thrilling new version of an old film noir. After winning the Best Picture Oscar in 2017 for The Shape of Water, Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro continues to challenge himself. Turning aside from his customary monster or supernatural-themed stories, he's now made a crime film, a film noir as people often call it, Nightmare Alley. Hollywood already released a picture with that title back in 1947, starring Tyrone Power, and it's a good one, but rather than do a remake, Del Toro went back to the original 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, which includes a lot of material that was changed or not used for the older film. And being the stylist that he is, Del Toro has made a movie of intense visual richness, a dark thriller that grabs the viewer every step of the way. Bradley Cooper plays a cunning grifter named Stanton Carlisle, whom we first see dragging what is clearly a wrapped up dead body into a hole in the floor of a run-down shack, setting it on fire, then walking away while the fire engulfs the house. It's the late 1930s. On the run, Stan stumbles into a traveling circus, and is hired by the owner and operator, played by Willem Dafoe, as an assistant and maintenance guy. He makes friends with a mentalist act, a husband and wife team played by David Strathairn and Toni Collette, who teach him some of their tricks. He also hooks up with Molly, a sideshow performer played by Rooney Mara, and persuades her to go off with him and embark on their own career as a mentalist act, pretending to read minds and reveal secrets on stage and in nightclubs. But then a femme fatale, a psychiatrist played by Cate Blanchett, gets him involved in a much more high-stakes scheme. Del Toro loves classic studio-era Hollywood film, to which he's added his own heady mix of gothic symbolism and mystery. He's great at making movies that are made completely on sets, or almost completely. That old style of cinematic illusion in which production design, music, and smooth camera work seduces an audience into its world is a perfect match for this director's talent. As a viewer, I reveled in the artifice of his presentation, the knowledge that this is a movie not detracting one bit from the enjoyment of its style. The film is constantly startling us with vivid tracking shots, close-ups of its often grotesque characters, and unusual camera angles. Nathan Johnson's music provides an ominous undercurrent to the tale of twisted ambition spinning out of control. Bradley Cooper really takes it to the limit—this is among his best work yet, a maniacal yet self-contained portrait of a man always grasping for more. Rooney Mara represents a balancing force, an essentially innocent person tricked into crossing ethical boundaries because of her love for Stan. She's the perfect counterpart to Cooper's intensity. A lot of mainstream filmmaking is merely competent at best, not going out of its way to challenge an audience, but tamely imitating all the other stuff out there. Guillermo del Toro is different. With Nightmare Alley, he demonstrates his commitment to continue making terrifically entertaining movies.

Topics include: the eerie way in which William Lindsay Gresham's book almost foreshadowed his own demise, the incident in del Toro's past that made him connect so deeply with the source material, notable differences between each iteration, some pushback on the criticism that the most recent version favors style over substance, why the entire point is that you were supposed to see the ending coming from a mile away, and much more!

Guillermo del Toro has been called the leading fantasy filmmaker of this century. His movies include “Pan's Labyrinth,” “Hellboy,” and “The Shape of Water,” which won four Academy Awards in 2018, including Best Picture and Best Director. He joined David Remnick to talk about his new film, “Nightmare Alley,” along with Bradley Cooper, who plays Stanton Carlisle, a grifter who seems to want to do the right thing but is unable to resist the pull of the con. Based on a 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham, “Nightmare Alley” is del Toro's first film that isn't somewhere in the fantasy genre; its dark depiction of American life is grounded in film noir. “We went to the root of it, American existentialism,” del Toro says, citing sources like the novel “The Day of the Locust” and the paintings of Edward Hopper. “It's a discovery of America reckoning with its own ideals and its reality,” and a sense of tragic fate. “We knew that we needed to create not an up-and-down structure but a very steady, inexorable ramp.” The film, which was released in theatres in December, during the surge of the Omicron variant, begins streaming February 1st.

Multi-hyphenate Bradley Cooper is out with two new films. There's “Licorice Pizza,” in which he plays real-life wild man producer Jon Peters, and “Nightmare Alley,” where he stars as carnival worker-turned-con man Stanton Carlisle. Cooper commits to all his roles but says it was a challenge to bare all in Guillermo del Toro's dark drama, “Nightmare Alley.” “It demanded that we be naked — emotionally and soulfully and even physically for me, which actually was a big deal,” Cooper says. “I still remember that day, just to be naked in front of the crew for six hours. … It was pretty heavy.” In the first of a two-part interview, Cooper talks about how he prepared for each role. His short but memorable turn as Jon Peters was just nominated for a SAG Award. And Cooper has another connection to Peters — Cooper made 2018's “A Star is Born,” a remake of a 1954 film that producer Jon Peters had already re-made in 1976 with his then-girlfriend, Barbra Streisand. Cooper tells KCRW why he was so committed to writing and directing a remake of a remake, even though everyone told him not to do it.

Nightmare Alley is not what you might expect from your typical Guillermo del Toro film.  If you told me that a Guillermo del Toro film used a carnival for a setting but didn't lean heavily into the abnormal or feature a unique creature design, I'd tell you that you were lying. I'd also question if the film was even worth watching. Nightmare Alley might not feel like the typical Guillermo del Toro film. Despite the title, this isn't a horror or paranormal film. Rather, it's a crime noir that tells the story of a con man who starts believing in his con to the point that everything starts to spiral out of control.  While Bradley Cooper is the lead here as Stanton Carlisle, this film is all about the women. Toni Collette, Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett all put major performances into this film. Blanchett in particular puts in a brilliant performance. Bradley Cooper isn't a slouch in the acting department but he gets outacted in just about every scene with Blanchett. The same can be said for his scenes with William Dafoe but that's to be expected because well...it William Dafoe being creepy and no one out acts creepy Dafoe. Clocking in at 2 1/2 hours, Nightmare Alley does suffer from some pacing issues. But those issues can be forgiven for the overall payoff in the story as well as the performances put in. While it's not what one might expect from Guillermo del Toro, it's a great reminder of the range he has as a director and is definitely worth checking out. Like what you hear?
