In a groundbreaking conversation about childhood development, author David Epstein reveals why pushing kids into early specialization might be doing more harm than good. His book "Range," now adapted for young readers, challenges traditional thinking about success and personal growth. Epstein argues that children benefit tremendously from exploring multiple interests rather than narrowing their focus too quickly. Drawing from research across sports, science, and personal development, he demonstrates that a broad range of experiences creates a more robust foundation for future success. The discussion highlights a critical problem in modern parenting: the intense pressure to excel in specific activities from an incredibly young age. Whether it's travel sports teams for seven-year-olds or hyper-structured academic programs, these approaches can actually limit a child's potential rather than enhance it. We also speak with Brazilian-American author Anna Sequeira about her new children's book "Vera la Valente is Scared," which explores the nuanced concept of bravery through the story of a young girl confronting her fear of roller coasters. Drawing from her personal experiences as a multilingual educator and mother, Sequeira shares how the book teaches children that true courage isn't about fearlessness, but about understanding and respecting one's own limits. With a background in writing both in Portuguese and Spanish, Anna emphasizes the importance of cultural representation, language learning, and helping children feel proud of their heritage, all while weaving humor, imagination, and gentle life lessons into her storytelling.

In late June of 2010, the small community of Forest Lakes, Arizona, was shaken by the sudden disappearance of 32-year-old Cameron Sequeira. On that fateful day, Cameron entrusted his young daughter to a relative of his girlfriend before embarking on a walk with his cherished dog, Zero. While Zero eventually returned home a couple of days later, Cameron seemed to have vanished without a trace, leaving his family and friends in a state of confusion and despair. The alarming news of his disappearance reached his parents, who quickly made the journey from their home in Oregon to Arizona, determined to assist in the search for their son.Upon their arrival in Forest Lakes, Cameron's parents were met with a perplexing situation that only deepened their concern. As the days passed without any sign of Cameron, authorities uncovered an unsettling development: a man residing on the same property had fled the area with his infant son shortly after Cameron's disappearance. This revelation added another layer of complexity to an already troubling case, leaving law enforcement with two intertwined mysteries to unravel. The community, once peaceful and quiet, was now filled with questions and uncertainty about the fate of Cameron and the connection, if any, to the fleeing man.More than 14 years have elapsed since that tragic day, yet Cameron's family remains steadfast in their quest for answers. They continue to sift through the fragments of information and clues that may lead them to the truth about what happened to their beloved son. The enduring pain of not knowing weighs heavily on their hearts, but their determination to uncover the mystery surrounding Cameron's disappearance fuels their hope. Each day, they hold onto the belief that, with time and persistence, they may finally piece together the puzzle that has haunted them for over a decade.#missingperson#podcast#searchingformissingpeople#truecrimecommunity#truecrimestories#CAMERONSEQUEIRA#locatingthelost#unsolvedmystery#unsolvedcrime

Last week, you heard Part 1 of Cameron Sequeira's story. Cameron disappeared from Forest Lakes, Arizona, in June 2010, along with his dog, Zero. Cameron's parents were told that he dropped off his 2-year-old daughter with his girlfriend's great-grandmother, Louise, before leaving to walk his dog. Louise attempted to report Cameron missing the following day after he failed to return to pick up his daughter; however, an officer said she had to wait until Cameron was missing for more than 24 hours. Zero later came back without a collar or leash. In the days that followed, chaos ensued when another resident of the same property fled the state with his infant son. Cameron's parents learned about a rift between this man and Cameron, which led them to question whether this man's departure was connected to Cameron's disappearance or merely a coincidence, perhaps motivated by a desire to protect his child. Join us as we delve deeper into this mystery and unravel what may have happened to Cameron Sequeira. If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Cameron Sequeira, please call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523 or 1-800-338-7888. It was late June 2010 when 32-year-old Cameron Sequeira disappeared from Forest Lakes, Arizona. The story goes that Cameron left his young daughter with one of his girlfriend's relatives and then went for a walk with his beloved dog, Zero. Zero returned a couple of days later, but no one ever saw or heard from Cameron again. His parents were alerted that their son was missing, and they traveled from their home in Oregon to Arizona to aid in the search efforts to find Cameron. When they arrived in Forest Lakes, the whole situation wasn't adding up. Days after Cameron had vanished, authorities were alerted that a man living on the same property had fled the area with his infant son. Now, law enforcement had two mysteries on their hands. Were these events related? More than 14 years later, Cameron's family is still piecing together the clues to figure out what happened to their son.If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Cameron Sequeira, please call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523 or 1-800-338-7888. Mike Palmer welcomes Marcio Sequeira, founder and CEO of MOLA, to discuss structural engineering education and the future of architecture. Marcio shares his background and how his interest in architecture and structures was influenced by his parents' careers in steel construction and physics. He explains how he developed MOLA, a physical model kit that uses springs and magnets to teach structural concepts, out of frustration with abstract structural engineering classes in university. We explore the importance of hands-on, visual learning in architectural education and how MOLA helps students develop intuition about building behavior. Marcio discusses MOLA's use in university settings, including at MIT for teaching structural dynamics. The conversation touches on the balance between artistic vision and functionality in architecture, using examples like Gaudi's work in Barcelona. We discuss the challenges of teaching architectural concepts earlier in K-12 education and the potential for tools like MOLA to spark interest in the field. Marcio shares insights on emerging trends in architecture, including the increasing use of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in Brazil. We also explore the impact of climate change and environmental concerns on architectural design. The episode concludes with Marcio's advice for aspiring architects and educators, emphasizing the value of persistence and long-term vision. He shares that MOLA took 20 years from concept to a successful company, highlighting the importance of dedication in pursuing one's goals. Key takeaways: Hands-on, visual learning tools like MOLA can significantly enhance structural engineering education. Integrating architectural concepts earlier in K-12 education could help spark interest in the field. Persistence and long-term vision are crucial for success in both education and entrepreneurship.

In missiology, the modern definition of “people groups” depends substantially upon the work of Donald McGavran and his conception of the homogenous unit principle. But did McGavran misunderstand the caste system from which he drew his insights? And how should missionaries today assess McGavran's work? Across the United States, conservative politicians are leading a backlash against L.G.B.T.Q. identity, framing legal restrictions as protection of children. Several states have introduced laws to ban medical treatments known as gender-affirming care—including hormones and puberty blockers—prescribed to adolescents. Major medical organizations have approved the treatments, but Rachel Monroe, who has been following efforts to ban gender-affirming care in Texas, found that doctors wouldn't speak out about the political furor because the resulting attention could endanger themselves, their clinics, and their patients. One specialist, however, was willing to go on the record: Dr. Gina Sequeira, a co-director of the Gender Clinic at Seattle Children's. “I was growing so frustrated seeing the narrative around gender-affirming care provision for youth so full of misinformation and so full of blatant falsehoods that I couldn't in good conscience continue to stay quiet,” Sequeira told her. Doctors cite a body of data that gender-affirming care reduces the risk of suicide, which is high among trans youth. Sequeira's Seattle clinic has been fielding calls from Texas families looking to relocate if the proposed ban in Texas prevents their children from accessing care. “If we were to stop care, I would be afraid that our child wouldn't survive,” the mother of a trans girl told Monroe. “There's no question that she's not safe to herself.”
