In a relatively grim year for superhero movies, both critically and at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is blissfully bucking that trend. Building off the dizzying, kaleidoscopic animation style and storytelling of Into the Spider-Verse, Across the Spider-Verse manages to elevate what worked about the previous film and roll it into an even more exciting, heartfelt second chapter in Miles Morales' uncertain journey toward becoming a hero. As with the first, though, a fundamental component for keeping the film's multiversal craziness in line is the score by Oscar-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton (who returns to the pod after talking with us about Being the Ricardos). Together, we talk about finding the sound for this film, discovering the right punk sound for Gwen Stacy (whose journey runs parallel to Miles'), and juggling familiar motifs while layering new sonic textures to allow the different universes to invade each other. What's more, we also chat about his intensely personal working style, the value of doing just about everything yourself, and how rare that is in a film music landscape where most big composers hire huge teams to get the work done. You can find Daniel Pemberton at his official website. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is currently playing in select theaters. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Sony Music.

Do you have some explaining to do? Do you poop out at parties? Well aside from that new Gorillaz album, this week we have a lot to celebrate! We walk down slapstick memory lane and learn about the life and epic career of the queen of comedy, Lucille Ball. For a woman who never gave up and put such a positive spin on things, how can you not love her? To send in topics of interest, please email quiteabitpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on instagram/facebook/youtube:https://linktr.ee/quiteabitpodcast Sources for this episode: “Love, Lucy” - an autobiography by Lucille Ballhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucille_Ball
[ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 2022 and the nominees are: 1. Nicole Kidman - Being the Ricardos 2. Penélope Cruz - Parallel Mothers 3. Kristen Stewart - Spencer 4. Jessica Chastain - The Eyes of Tammy Faye 5. Olivia Colman - The Lost Daughter - In 2022 Jessica Chastain won her Oscar (finally) for portraying the iconic televangelist, Tammy Faye. Chastain has incredible range and she certainly does not disappoint in this larger than life role. Was it my personal fav performance of hers? You'll have to listen to the episode to find out! Frankly, you could make an argument for any one of these performances as winsome. I think it was time to reward Chastain for her incredible body of work. Maybe the spoiler would have been Cruz or Kidman; I think many thought this was going to happen. Colman was semi-fresh off her recent win for The Favourite so a win was not likely. I was so happy to see Stewart get a nomination (finally) and it stands as a victory for so many reasons. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Jesse Reynolds as they discuss.

This week, Lucy's neighbor, Mrs. Trumbull, grows frustrated with Little Ricky's crying. This eventually leads to a rift between the Ricardos and Mertzes. Don't worry though... I have a feeling things will work out. Discussions include sports ball and hypothetical future babysitting arrangements.
IN A WORLD, WHERE NO ONE KNOWS WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON...Ricardo iamuuri Robinson, a multi-faceted artist from Pittsburg, has selected M. Night Shymalan's tale of chaos and confusion called The Happening. Though this movie has not been seen favorably by most critics, Ricardo discusses the reasons why he is drawn to this epically terrible film as a way to understand the struggles of humanity, with an invisible villain who might just be that ficus tree in your corner. Heyd and Erin dig deep with Ricardo into this "satirical" movie with themes of loss, fear and tiramisu! Break out the crab dip, baby! November may have just begun, but we've already got our minds on New Year's Eve—specifically 1982, when a little ol' movie called 200 Cigarettes was set. The movie came out in 1999 and featured numerous familiar faces, many who were just lil baby celebrities at the time (Kate Hudson, Christina Ricci, Ben Affleck, Courtney Love, Paul Rudd, and SO many more). We follow all of the characters during one fateful NYE night as they make their way across New York City to get to a party. The ‘fits are FAB and costumed by thee Susan Lyall who we talked about in our Empire Records and also did Molly's Game, the Trial of the Chicago 7, Being the Ricardos, and more. Listen, if you've ever found yourself compelled to don leopard print, or a furry coat, tights and heels as a New Year's Eve outfit, this movie might have been why. Off topic rambles include the Mothman (hit Marie up if you are a Mothman luva), the Jeepers Creepers man…excuse me, but how did he get a personalized license plate?, lesser known early aughts teen thrillers (hint: we MAY have a themed month on the docket), and we butt heads over imitation crab. Aaron Sorkin's writing style is iconic – dialogue is quippy, fast-paced, and robust – the kind you got in West Wing, Newsroom, and Sports Night. And Sorkin gives us all of that in his latest film – Being the Ricardos – a Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz biopic for which both Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem are nominated for Oscars this season. Host Kelley Carter sits down with the writer/ director Aaron Sorkin to talk about what makes this biopic different from the Lucille Ball biopic you might expect, why he made the Kidman casting choice (it was a controversial one), and how script writing is both thrilling and agonizing all at the same time. Then, Senior Culture Critic for Andscape, Soraya McDonald, and award-winning poet, essayist, and cultural critic Kimberly Reyes, join Kelley to talk about what they thought of the film, and their feelings on the controversy from the Critics Choices Awards – spoiler: they're not happy.
Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair's chief critic and co-host of the podcast Little Gold Men, joins 'Daddy Issues' for a second year and counting to discuss fatherly presence in this year's Oscars nominations and to make his winner predictions. Fathers were a source of tender support in several of this year's nominated films'— as opposed to last year when they were tragically slipping away to Alzheimer's, drunk, or learning from an octopus. Nominated films like CODA, King Richard, Dune, Flee, Raya and the Dragon, Encanto, Mitchells Vs the Machine, and Luca all feature fathers of characters who are classic outliers. There's a lot less bullying and emotional infancy among these characters and a lot more kind-hearted helping of those who deserve a voice. It was also a big year for female directors contemplating gender norms. Maggie Gyllenhall's film adaptation of Elena Ferrante's novel The Lost Daughter explores an ambivalent mother who leaves her family in pursuit of her own academic career in a narrative that is traditionally attached to fathers. Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog, set in the 1920s American West, explores repressed rage and desire, internalized homophobia, particularly femme phobia, the complexities of mentorship, and history repeating itself. It's also the most nominated film of the year, which really sticks in noted bitch Sam Elliott's craw. We also discuss the "shockingly good" West Side Story, the incredible woof that was Being the Ricardos, and unpack Campion's biggest Power of the Dog misstep. (Besides what she said to Venus and Serena Williams at the Critics Choice Awards.) --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support
Danny and Speedy take a trip back to the 1950s, when married couples couldn't share a bed on TV and apparently J. Edgar Hoover was a charitable sweetheart with his time. In preparation for the upcoming Academy Awards, they take a look at Aaron Sorkin's "Being the Ricardos," which depicts a week-in-the-making of one of the greatest television shows ever, "I Love Lucy." Topics include: the controversial hirings of Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, the most egregious historic alterations, and the quippiest quips of the Aaron Sorkin quips. Plus, they attempt not to "gaslight" each other. If you have comments, questions, or personal misheard-lyric stories, you can send them to IfYoureAnOldSoul@gmail.com.

Academy Award-winner Javier Bardem had a tremendous 2021, starring in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year with "Dune," playing Desi Arnaz in Aaron Sorkin's "Being The Ricardos," which he recently received a SAG Nomination for Best Actor from his peers and playing the lead in the Spanish submission for Best International Feature Film, "The Good Boss." Javier was kind enough to spend some time with us discussing all three roles, including his musical work as entertainer, Desi Arnaz, the differences between Spanish and American productions, where things are at regarding his role as Stilgar in the upcoming "Dune: Part Two," and more! Being The Ricardos, Aaron Sorkin's latest project as a big-screen writer-director is...also very much a small-screen project, so we are claiming it. Look, it's about TV (specifically, the stars and making of I Love Lucy) and it's kind of on TV (members can stream it for free on Amazon Prime Video), so IT COUNTS. Anyway: joining us for the discussion is actual film critic Tim Grierson! Around The Dial takes us through film-to-TV adaptation Finding Magic Mike; TV-to-film-back-to-TV adaptation MacGruber; Insecure; How To With John Wilson; Dead Asleep; and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. John Potts asks us to choose a TV getaway for our next imaginary holiday. Ilan brings us back to the TV-to-movie pipeline with a Canon presentation on The Simpsons episode "Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie." Then we name the week's Winner and Loser before closing out with a Game Time that really decks the halls. No need to arrange a multi-cam setup: this podcast is for your ears only! GUESTS
