Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show. We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.

For the third month of 1995, the boys are looking to tip the scales with their latest film! There's been a mysterious death on a miniature Maine island - the elderly woman's caretaker (Kathy Bates) is the most likely suspect. The local constable (Christopher Plummer) is convinced she's done it, based entirely on his suspicion over the equally mysterious death of her husband (David Strathairn) twenty years prior. The only thing that might save her is the return of her daughter (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who just might be the key to both the past and presents. Whether this new death eclipses the earlier one, it's up to us to discover the true nature of.….Dolores Claiborne!

Well it's that time of year again, no we aren't talking about post general election hangover, we are referring to that annual culinary and quintessentially American Bacchanalia where we stuff ourselves to the gills with too many carbs, too much gravy, and bad football (the American variety).Yes kids, it's Thanksgiving. This little tale written by Chris Radant, and brought to the screen by Jodie Foster as her second work as director, is one of two films we'll cover in November that are Turkey Day-centric. Featuring lovely performances by an ensemble cast:Charles Durning, legendary Anne Bancroft, Robert Downey Jr., Geraldine Chaplin —with great supporting performances by Steve Guttenberg, and at the time, somewhat “new faces” Dylan McDermott and David Strathairn. The film is a great amuse-bouche to prepare our listeners for the unavoidable annoyances, absurdities, and grievances served alongside the turkey. While we can't always pick our family, we can certainly choose how, and to what extent we get sucked up into the madness at the dinner table. Take what dishes appeal to you (feed the rest to the dog). Sam and I offer our strategies for survival at the end of the episode, or as the saying goes in the film,“just float” —and don't forget to pass the gravy.
In honor of Veterans' Day, we're revisiting an episode of Art Works that tells the origin story of the transformative project Theater of War Productions. Co-founded by classicist, translator, and director Bryan Doerries, Theater of War began with a simple yet profound concept: presenting staged readings of Sophocles' plays Ajax and Philoctetes to military communities as a means of addressing both the challenges veterans face and the lasting impact of war on families and relationships. In this episode, Doerries recounts how he was inspired to bring these ancient military tragedies to contemporary audiences, believing they would unlock conversations around trauma and healing. With excerpts of performances by actors Bill Camp, David Strathairn and Adam Driver, this episode explores the initial journey of Theater of War and its impact on military communities, offering insight into how ancient drama opens pathways for veterans to process their experiences. Now, with over 20 specialized programs, Theater of War Productions reaches diverse communities worldwide, addressing not only the struggles of veterans but also broader public health and social justice issues, including homelessness, racialized violence, and natural disasters. Doerries also discusses the arts' power to heal, showing how storytelling and shared experience allow individuals to confront, process, and share pain. Theater of War taps into this capacity, creating safe spaces that support connection, resilience, and recovery.

Thirty years ago, director Curtis Hanson (LA Confidential, 8 Mile) helped introduce us to what was seemed like a very novel concept on-screen for the first time: "MERYL STREEP, ACTION HERO." Up until this point, Streep had already been nominated for multiple awards along with winning several - she was and still IS considered Our Greatest Living Actress who had delivered memorable performances in mostly serious dramas though in more recently years (in the early '90's) had often branched off into comedy including recent gems like Death Becomes Her and Postcards From the Edge. This adventure thriller set alongside the rapids of a river in Montana was the actress' first real stab at action on-screen....and she did not disappoint playing Gail, an expert rower and rafter who was taking her family (David Strathairn, Joseph Mazzello) for a trip on very dangerous river. Of course, things do not go as planned as they soon encounter a couple of armed killers lead by Kevin Bacon who are fleeing a recent robbery. And what results could somewhat be described as "Die Hard on the Rapids" even featuring Streep and crew performing most of their own stunts. Episode 34 - Hype: Sneakers (1992)There are so many great movies that came from the 90's, but “Sneakers” is one that not only stands out but is one that I either return from time to watch again and again or stop and watch some (or all of) whenever I find it playing anywhere. While I can appreciate dark, twisted espionage thrillers, 'Sneakers' takes a different path. It steers away from what we have more recently been accustomed to with the usual gritty tones for a blend of light-hearted mischief, humor, and suspense, making it a uniquely enjoyable experience.. You have a one of a kind cast with Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, David Strathairn, Donal Logue, Stephen Tobolowsky, Timothy Busfield and more. It kind of (I am reaching here a little bit) feels like the precursor to the Ocean's 11 reboot with its group of goofy characters facing real threats. This movie is written by the team behind “WarGames” and is directed by the always entertaining Phil Alden Robinson (“Field of Dreams”, “The Sum of All Fears”, and the series “The Good Fight”). The movie's crown jewel, however, is its music. Composer James Horner, known for 'Avatar', 'Braveheart', and 'Titanic', delivers one of my all-time favorite scores. Everyone behind and in front of the camera brings their A-game to this movie. Yes at times its a little cheesy and feels a little dated, but none of that gets in the way of this movie being pure fun. The only frustration I have with this movie is its bad title. As you will hear in this episode, there were other great title options that were included in the movie! Other than that one (but important) frustration this early 90's hit is one that if you have not seen it that I highly recommend you check out. “Sneakers” is available to rent and or purchase on all platforms. Enjoy the movie and thanks for listening. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit sohrabsmovieq.substack.com

Dolores Claiborne is a 1995 American psychological thriller drama film directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Christopher Plummer, and David Strathairn. The screenplay by Tony Gilroy is based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The film's score was written by Danny Elfman. The plot focuses on the strained relationship between a mother and her daughter, largely told through flashbacks, after her daughter arrives to her remote hometown on a Maine island where her mother has been accused of murdering the elderly woman for whom she had long been a care-provider and companion. Dolores Claiborne was the second major King film adaptation to star Bates in a leading role after Misery five years earlier. Kathy Bates stated in a retrospective interview that her performance as the titular Dolores was her favorite performance she had ever given. Host Meg Wolitzer helps a great documentarian celebrate a great American author. Cather, author of novels like My Antonia and O Pioneers! just had her sesquicentennial—her 150th birthday. And Burns hosted a live evening of her shorter works. On this program, we feature “The Way of the World,” in which an imaginary town's young “citizens” are rife with romance and rivalry. The reader is Sonia Manzano. And a weary farmer's wife recaptures her long-dormant passion for music at “A Wagner Matinee,” read by David Strathairn.
For this episode, Phil and Liam are joined by special guest Blake Howard, film podcaster extraordinaire and the disruptive innovator behind One Heat Minute productions, to discuss the 1994 action-thriller THE RIVER WILD.Married couple Gail and Tom Hartman (Meryl Streep and David Strathairn) are in the middle of a relationship crisis and on the verge of separation, when they take their young son Roarke (Joseph Mazello) on a whitewater rafting trip. However, their vacation turns into a nightmare when they encounter Wade and Terry (Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly), two criminals on the lam, who take the family hostage and force them to aid their escape through the notoriously treacherous Idaho rapids. This is a hugely significant film for multiple reasons. Not only was it one of the first major action movies of the era to have a female lead, but that lead happened to be none other than Meryl Streep! The guys start by discussing the film's ‘Die Hard DNA', and debate whether it's actually closer in spirit to DIE HARD or DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. They also talk about where this movie fits in among the popular 90s subgenre of ‘yuppie in peril' thrillers, and discuss director Curtis Hanson's eclectic filmography, along with his mastery of suspense and tension. They talk about the gravitas that Meryl Streep brings to this fast-paced ‘divorce drama', and expound the virtues of David Strathairn, Kevin Bacon, John C. Reilly, Joseph Mazello and Benjamin Bratt. They dig into what the film is really saying about family dynamics, and how it was ahead of the curve with its exploration of concepts such as gaslighting, toxic masculinity and micro-aggressions. The guys then take their raft down the L.A. river to get to the ‘Die Hard Oscars', before Blake and Liam go mano-a-mano in the ‘Double Jeopardy Trivia Quiz'! On the two hundred and twentieth episode of THE THIRD ACT PODCAST the crew are here for an overwhelming episode about overwhelming films.Christian and Jericho get in front of the mics to talk about the (other) film sensation of the summer and another biopic of a recent controversial American historical figure for a theme we're calling, Oppy/Nixon - or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Old White Men Talking in Rooms We review the new release from Christopher Nolan about the creation of the atomc bomb, OPPENHEIMER. Then, we talk about another 3+ hour drama, NIXON. We also discuss Tulsa King, full frontal in IMAX, David Strathairn.Keep in touch with us on Instagram and email us anytime at: TheThirdActPodcast@gmail.com
On the 78th anniversary of the Atomic Bomb being dropped on Hiroshima, we look at some of the popular culture around that event. We start by discussing the 1980 song “Enola Gay,” by the 1980s British band Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD). We look at a brief history of the band, the success of the song both at the time and its historical legacy and a not-necessarily-obvious resonance it had in popular culture. After that, given the box office success of Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer,” we look some other films that take on the creation of the bomb in 1945. That includes the 1989 films “Day One” starring David Strathairn as Oppenheimer and “Fat Man and Little Boy,” starring Paul Newman and Dwight Schultz (who you may remember from “The A-Team” or “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) as Oppenheimer. We also briefly discuss the 1980 BBC mini-series “Oppenheimer” with Sam Waterston in the title role. We end with a brief mention of two other foreign language films related to the events: Alain Resnais' “Hiroshima Mon Amour” from 1959 and Akira Kurosawa's “Rhapsody in August” from 1991.
Continuing our long, strange trip through the varied cinema of the 1990s, we do our best to enjoy the natural world and its inherent pitfalls, both real and imagined, with 1994's The River Wild and Wolf. Before we make like Chet Baker and get lost- in more ways than one- we dig into the much hyped Grimace Birthday Meal from the culinary geniuses at McDonald's, unpack the Walt Disney Company's recent censoring of New Hollywood classic The French Connection, and celebrate the lives and legacies of the Iron Sheik, Treat Williams, Cormac McCarthy, and Daniel Ellsberg. Upon saluting the departed, we depart ourselves from any semblance of civilization and good sense with this episode's double feature: listen as we enjoy the thoughtful escapism of Curtis Hanson, the wackadoodle divergence of Mike Nichols, and pine for the days when this sort of genre entertainment once dominated multiplexes and videostores. Even better, Overlapping Dialogue inducts a new member into its Hall of Fame, the Immune. Finally, stick around till the very end to hear us announce an exciting bonus commentary episode just in time for our nation's birthday. In short, it's a jam-packed episode that we're quite proud of! The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 2: Sea of Fire Aired on CBS: November 2, 1988 Directed by: Alan Metzger Story by : Peter McCabe, Teleplay by : Peter McCabe & Coleman Luck Featuring: Keith David, Reginald VelJohnson, David Strathairn (!), Seret Scott There is another street gang in the Equalizer universe, and just like the others, it has no apparent business plan or any kind of plan really outside of revelling in being terrors in their community. This gang, the Demon Lords, commit a crime in their high school much much worse than their otherwise Greasers "spitballs and goofing in the hallways" demeanor. Equalizer is on the case as a teacher this time, going all Dangerous Minds on them. Also Mickey's got a spiffy new short haircut which sparks Chris to think back to his skateboarding past. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/

STREEPS OF FIRE: THE RIVER WILD (1994) WITH BLOOD AND POPCORN'S ERIK! Following Streep's break from heavy roles after 1988's A CRY IN THE DARK, 4 out of 5 of Streep's next movies were sharp-ish turns to comedy (SHE-DEVIL, POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE & DEATH BECOMES HER), with one prestige drama (THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS) before she decided it was time for becoming an... action hero? We are still in the midst of Streep's most fascinating period (she would next romance Clint Eastwood in the brilliant BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY). Curtis Hanson (director of LA CONFIDENTIAL) was a master of the mid-budget studio thriller at the time of The River Wild. Once Streep was on board with Hanson, a crack cast around her quickly followed (Kevin Bacon, John C. Reilly, David Strathairn, that one kid from Jurassic Park, a heroic dog, and Benjamin Bratt). It all makes for a relatively satisfying early 90s mid-budget studio thriller about a couple of convicts taking a river guide (Streep) and her family hostage on a river-bound getaway through some gnarly rapids she has a deadly history with. It IS a ridiculous premise but Hanson, to his credit, along with Streep giving more than a script like this deserves, make it work. The River Wild was filmed in a few different location but most of the sedate or passable rapid river scenes were shot in Southern Oregon on the wild and scenic portion of the Rogue River. Co-host Ken and special guest Erik (of the pod Blood and Popcorn) lived in the area at the time and discuss both the river and working at a movie theater when the film was being made AND having most of the stars come through at one point or another. It is always a peculiar thing when Hollywood invades a small town. There is also a quiz about the movie! Usually we do two movies in an episode but we didn't have any Streep-as-action-hero movies to pair this with. We all eagerly await Streep to show up as Commander Azmatron Eleven (first introduced in the classic Kree-Skrull War, Avengers Annual #6 to be exact) in the MCU so she can be in another action movie and we can have a Streep action figure!*THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096*there is no such character and we all pray Streep never steps into a green closet to shoot a cameo in a shitty superhero movie, It would tarnish her crown

Jan Karski was a Polish resistance fighter whose reports of the horrors in Warsaw during World War II were tragically dismissed by Allied forces, an experience that haunted him for the rest of his life. Karski's story is told in the one-man play, "Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski," starring actor David Strathairn and directed and co-written by Derek Goldman, chair of Georgetown University's Department of Performing Arts. Strathairn and Goldman join us to discuss the show, whose New York premiere runs through October 9.
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2012 retrospective is coming to an end this month. Our second to last throwback podcast review is Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook & Tommy Lee Jones. Written by Tony Kushner, the film was a perfect merger of writer, actor, and director coming together to present an iconic figure in American history but finding ways to humanize him and showcase the most important period of his life rather than telling us a traditional biopic. The film received 12 Oscar nominations and won 2, including a third historic Best Actor win for Daniel Day-Lewis. How does the film hold up a decade later? Tune in as we discuss the screenplay, acting by the enormous ensemble, Spielberg's craftsmanship, and more. Joining me for this review, I have Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Sara Clements, Dan Bayer & Danilo Castro. You can also check out all of our previous 2012 retrospective reviews for "Zero Dark Thirty," "Skyfall," "Amour," "Beasts Of The Southern Wild," "Django Unchained," "Silver Linings Playbook" & "Life Of Pi" if you have not done so already.
