Today, David Waldman and Greg Dworkin KITM to that rhumba beat, as we go chick chicky boom, chick chicky boom: From Babalú! to Desilu! Long before CRT and DEI, there was of course, racism. Desi Arnaz with Lucille Ball brought function, profit and diversity to television. The Gop TLDR budget bill slipped through during the night. Why bother to smuggle in evil little bills when their whole point is to deliver an evil huge bill? Once they find a way around the filibuster, the only hurdle left will be reality.  Donald K. Trump makes his triumphant return from the Middle East as master of the art of taking credit for the deals. He returns to his passion of military design, adding engines to fighter jets like Bob Ross adding happy little trees to paintings. No ugly black stealth planes though. We all know how this administration feels about blacks in the Air Force. Trump has lost another global election, this time in Romania. Pope Leo (Bob) XIII gave JD Vance the brushoff, but stepped forward to greet the President of Ireland. (You know where to find RTÉ News.) If Trade deals are like dating and agreements are like marriage, Trump is the ex that needs a restraining order. Today we are bringing you Lucille Ball in the pilot series, if you will, to one of TV history's most blockbuster series, I Love Lucy. My Favorite Husband starred Lucille Ball and her husband who was then played by actor Richard Denning. Denning was slated to make the transition to the I Love Lucy TV series, but Lucille pushed for her real-life husband Desi Arnaz to assume the role. The episode centers on Lucy's frantic attempts to cash a $500 check she won on a radio game show called "Everybody Wins" within a tight 25-minute window. This comedy episode will lead into Lucille Ball's appearance on “Suspense,” with our special guest Dr. Joe Webb, on Thursday. This episode has been sponsored by the Mellon Foundation, the Department of Humanities at the UPR-M, and the Instituto Nuevos Horizontes.  This is the second podcast with Ilan Stavans about Latino USA; the first, in Spanish, is available on the New Books Network en español. About the book: In Latino USA, Latin American and Latino scholar Ilan Stavans captures the joys, nuances, and multiple dimensions of Latino culture within the context of the English language. Combining the solemnity of so-called serious literature and history with the inherently theatrical and humorous form of comics, this cartoon history of Latinos includes Columbus, the Alamo, Desi Arnaz, West Side Story, Castro, Guevara, the Bay of Pigs, Neruda, the Mariel boatlift, Selena, Sonia Sotomayor, and much more. To embrace the sweep of Hispanic civilization and its riot of types, archetypes, and stereotypes, Stavans deploys a series of "cliché figurines" as narrators, including a toucan (displayed regularly in books by García Márquez, Allende, and others), the beloved Latino comedian Cantinflas, a masked wrestler, and Captain America. Their multiple, at times contradictory voices provide unique perspectives on Latino history, together creating a carnivalesque epic, democratic and impartial. Updated to bring the book up to the present moment, this twenty-fifth anniversary edition includes thirty new pages of Latino history, from Hamilton to George Santos. Latino USA, like the history it so entertainingly relates, is a treasure trove of irreverence, wit, subversion, anarchy, politics, humanism, and celebration. In episode 95 astrologers Kristina Martin and Tara Redfield take on another listener submission for the one-time Hollywood/TV royal couple, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.  The two had a love that lived both on and off screen!   First, we look into Lucille's chart and are surprised by how much of the grounded Earth element we see, espefcially for someone known for their unique and wild sense of humor! Her Capricorn rising tells us that a carefree childhood was practically non-existent. However, it did make her a powerful force when it came to her business sense. We do see zany Uranus in the first house, this is where her mischievousness and out-of-the-norm performance style comes from!    We then investigate Desi's chart and see an intriguing Sun/Mars conjunction in Pisces. This explains his masculine leaning side, and paired with a Moon/Pluto aspect, the emotions ran high and deep with him.  With a nontraditional Aquarius Venus, friendship was highly valued when it came to his romantic relationships.    Together, their charts are a mixed bag, and we see no aspects to Lucy's validation-needing Leo Sun, but they do create an interesting Moon opposition that speaks of domestic equilibrium. Their Mars sextile is great for motivation and being business partners, but a Saturn square to Mercury reveals of one of them lording over the other. This couple might have some 'splaining to do!   Listen in to hear what Venus score this classic duo gets!       CONNECT WITH US   Connect with Kristina Martin Book a Reading www.klmastrology.com astrologyklm@gmail.com www.instagram.com/klmastrology     Connect with Tara Redfield Book a Reading www.anotherdaygreener.com anotherdaygreener@gmail.com www.instagram.com/anotherdaygreener/ www.tiktok.com/@anotherdaygreener

My wife, Sari, and I love old movies and one of our favorites is the Long, Long Trailer, staring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.  Desi and Lucy are newly-weds who decide, instead of buying a house, to purchase a trailer home which they hitch onto the back of their car and set off on their adventures.  Soon, without any idea of how to drive such a contraption, they find themselves ascending into the Sierra Nevada mountains, driving up steep, narrow and twisty mountain roads.  Unbeknownst to Desi, Lucy decided to collect rocks as souvenirs along the way which she hid all over the trailer, adding extra weight to an already dangerously unwieldy vehicle.  The funniest part is watching them making small talk, pretending nothing is going on, as their car engine roars, gears squeal and little rocks spit out from their tires, over the cliffs and out into the abyss below.  The contrast between the nonchalance of their conversation and the terror in their eyes is priceless and it only increases as they head over the peak and begin to descend. The most dangerous time, both for oversized trailers and central bankers, is when you begin to descend from a peak.  Recent data suggest the Fed should, finally, begin to cut rates in September.  This operation could work out OK.  However, it is a delicate one and, particularly, when both markets and portfolios appear to be overconcentrated, it is important that investors take what steps they can to maintain or regain balance in their portfolios.

If I were on a game show and the category was "Top 10 Things That Are Cuban", my first thought wouldn't be cigars, Desi Arnaz, or that missile crisis.  It would be Tony Montana, OK??  One of cinema's most iconic criminals, played by Al Pacino in 1983's Scarface, this guy spews F-bombs and bullets like crazy, man.  10 years later, Pacino would win an Oscar for Scent of a Woman, where the naughtiest word he said (repeatedly) was "hoo-ha!".  But nobody remembers that character, right?  Did he cut down dozens of drug thugs with a machine gun?  NO.  He didn't kill a single person, even though he was a blind guy driving a Ferrari.  Hey, I'm not condoning gratuitous violence.  Blame Brian DePalma for that, if you must, but Scarface is a riveting masterpiece of a movie.  I have to talk about it!  Why don't you grab some coke (the beverage!!) and have a listen?

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz had a goal – to star in a TV show as husband and wife. But there were about a million obstacles in their way. For one thing, CBS didn't want to buy a TV show that featured an interracial couple. Major companies didn't want to sponsor the show for that same reason. There was even a battle over where to film the show. In these negotiations, Desi proved himself to be a savvy negotiator and a shrewd businessman. He knew when to be tough. He knew when to flatter. And he knew to hire the right people and get out of their way. When they created “I Love Lucy,” Lucy and Desi knew they were breaking new ground. But no one could have imagined the phenomenon that it would become. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! Lucille Ball wanted it all. She wanted to become an A-list actress. She wanted to have children. She wanted a happy marriage. But if the 1940s taught her anything, it was that she wasn't in control. Her husband, Desi Arnaz, cheated on her constantly. They wanted children together, but suffered several miscarriages. By the end of the decade, Lucy's only unequivocal professional success was a comedy radio show called “My Favorite Husband.” The network wanted to rework the show for a new thing called television, but Lucy wasn't so sure. "I Love Lucy" is a classic American television sitcom that aired from 1951-1957. The show starred Lucille Ball and her real-life husband Desi Arnaz. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential sitcoms in television history. The show follows the misadventures of Lucy Ricardo, a quirky housewife with aspirations of stardom, and her Cuban bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo, who often finds himself caught up in Lucy's schemes. The Ricardos live in a New York City apartment building, where they interact with their landlords and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz (played by William Frawley and Vivian Vance, respectively). The show was the first to be filmed in front of a live studio audience using multiple cameras, a technique that became the standard for sitcom production. It was also one of the first television programs to portray an interracial marriage (Lucy being Caucasian and Ricky being Cuban). But will this groundbreaking show still hit over 70 years after originally airing? Listen as the S1E1 boys deep dive I Love Lucy's first episode, "The Girls Want to Go to the Nightclub".
