With only weeks before impact, NASA executive Jocinda "Jo" Fowler teams up with a man from her past and a conspiracy theorist for an impossible mission into space to save humanity. "Uncharted" (2022) Dir. Ruben Fleischer Treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan recruits street-smart Nathan Drake to help him recover a 500-year-old lost fortune amassed by explorer Ferdinand Magellan. What starts out as a heist soon becomes a globe-trotting, white-knuckle race to reach the prize before the ruthless Santiago Moncada can get his hands on it. If Sully and Nate can decipher the clues and solve one of the world's oldest mysteries, they stand to find $5 billion in treasure but only if they can learn to work together. "Dog" (2022) Dir. Channing Tatum & Reid Carolin With a dog named Lulu by his side, Army Ranger Briggs races down the Pacific Coast to make it to a soldier's funeral on time. "The Cursed" (2022) Dir. Sean Ellis In 19th century France, a man arrives in a remote country village to investigate an attack by a wild animal. "Downfall: The Case Against Boeing" Dir. Rory Kennedy Examining the months since the tragedies, which caused global panic in March 2019 after two new aircrafts crashed within five months, killing 346 people. "After Yang" Dir. Kogonada In a near future, a family reckons with questions of love, connection, and loss after their A.I. helper unexpectedly breaks down. "Dos Estaciones" Dir. Sundance Film Festival 2022 coverage continues for Rosa and Cat. In this episode, they review four films: "Mija" Dir. Isabel Castro Doris Muñoz desperately longed for better representation in the indie music she listened to as a teenager. At 23, she took matters into her own hands and began a career in music talent management, passionately advocating for rising Latinx artists. Her swift success transformed her into a pillar for a community of first- and second-generation Americans seeking collective acceptance and healing through song. When Doris receives news that forces her to reconsider working in music, she finds Jacks Haupt, an auspicious young singer eager to break out of her parent's home in Dallas, Texas. Beyond the sweet moments of joy, glitter, and hope, Doris and Jacks share the ever-present guilt of being the first American-born members of their undocumented families. For them, the pressure of financial success is heightened because it facilitates green card processing and family reunification. "Riotsville, USA" Dir. Sierra Pettengill A a poetic and furious reflection on the reaction of a nation's citizens and institutions to the rebellions of the late 1960s. This artful, riveting documentary consists entirely of archival footage that was shot by the United States military or appeared on broadcast television. "Nothing Compares" Dir. Kathryn Ferguson Since the beginning of her career, Sinéad O'Connor has used her powerful voice to challenge the narratives she was surrounded by while growing up in predominantly Roman Catholic Ireland. Despite her agency, depth, and perspective, O'Connor's unflinching refusal to conform means that she has often been patronized and unfairly dismissed as an attention-seeking pop star. "Fire of Love" Dir. Sara Dosa Katia and Maurice Krafft loved two things — each other and volcanoes. For two decades, the daring French volcanologist couple were seduced by the thrill and danger of this elemental love triangle. They roamed the planet, chasing eruptions and their aftermath, documenting their discoveries in stunning photographs and breathtaking film to share with an increasingly curious public in media appearances and lecture tours. Ultimately, Katia and Maurice would lose their lives during a 1991 volcanic explosion on Japan's Mount Unzen, but they would leave a legacy that would forever enrich our knowledge of the natural world. Latinx Lens is attending the virtual Sundance Film Festival 2022! The festival runs January 20 to January 30. In this episode, Rosa and Cat dive into two documentaries premiering at the festival: "La Guerra Civil" Dir. Eva Longoria Bastón In 1996, Oscar De La Hoya, the charismatic golden boy from East LA, challenged Mexican-born boxing legend Julio César Chávez in what was billed as the “ultimate glory” fight. Mexicans on both sides of the border were forced to choose their favorite champ: the record-holding immigrant from humble beginnings, or the younger and more marketable Olympian born in the U.S. These rivals felt the pressure to prove their athletic superiority, while the fans' choice of champion revealed the type of Mexican they aspired to be. The film features detailed archival footage and enthusiastic interviews with Chávez and De La Hoya to illuminate a story that transcends language, heritage, and interests. "Tantura" Dir. Alon Schwarz The tape-recorded words “erase it” take on new weight in the context of history and war. When the state of Israel was established in 1948, war broke out and hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated in its aftermath. Israelis know this as the War of Independence. Palestinians call it “Nakba” (the Catastrophe). In the late 1990s, graduate student Teddy Katz conducted research into a large-scale massacre that had allegedly occurred in the village of Tantura in 1948. His work later came under attack and his reputation was ruined, but 140 hours of audio testimonies remain. The now elderly ex-soldiers recall unsettling acts of war while disquietly pausing at points they either don't remember or won't speak of. Audio from Katz's 20-year-old interviews cuts through the silence of self-preservation and exposes the ways in which power, silencing, and protected narratives can sculpt history. Joining me today is a Rotten Tomatoes approved critic and a podcaster in her own right, the wonderful Rosa Parra. A member of the Hollywood Critics Association, the Latino Entertainment Journalist Association, GALECA, and a fellow member of the Online Association of Female Film Critics, Rosa is also the co-founder and co-host of Latinx Lens. In her fun and informative podcast and companion website, Rosa focuses on highlighting Latinx representation and contributions in film and television. Additionally, Rosa, along with her co-writers and co-hosts, review all films with their unique Latinx Lens, lending a vital underrepresented perspective on cinema. An endlessly kind and supportive Twitter presence, I was so pleased to welcome her to this podcast to discuss three of the most vital filmmakers of the past 30 years, three gifted Mexican filmmakers whose groundbreaking work ushered in the Mexican New Wave in the 1990s, and three good friends who collectively call themselves the Three Amigos. The men to whom I'm referring are, of course, the marvelous Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, and Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose rich films inspire and challenge not just film fans but also each other. In this celebratory yet highly analytical feature-length episode, Rosa and I take a look at two movies from each director to compare and contrast their films and styles, and also chat about their collaborators, while taking the rest of their work into consideration as well. Whether it's Cuarón's unique one-two punch of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men, del Toro's feminist fantasies Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water, or the gritty realism of Iñárritu's Amores Perros and 21 Grams, Rosa and I explore it all. Needless to say, this episode is a must for film geeks! Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. Episode: 003; “The Latinx Lens: Keeping Faith in the Face of Injustice” Airdate: October 19, 2020 Length: 1:12:43 Guest(s): Pastor Inés Velásquez-McBryde How do you sustain your faith when injustice arrives at the intersection of race, culture and theology? Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. addresses this challenge in this week's episode, “The Latinx Lens: Keeping Faith in the Face of Injustice.” Joining us for this lively conversation is our guest, Inés Velásquez-McBryde, who describes herself as “a pastor, reconciler and imperfect follower of Jesus.” More specifically, McBryde is Chaplain at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, and received her Master of Divinity degree from Fuller's School of Theology. She is also co-founder with Pastor Bobby Harrison of The Church We Hope For, a southern California-based church which continues its growth and outreach online in spite of the global pandemic. Equally assured in her voice and her faith, McBryde was introduced to injustice early in life. Working in her youth as a translator for American missionaries in her native Nicaragua, McBryde saw first-hand the debilitating impact of systemic racism. In “The Latinx Lens: Keeping Faith in the Face of Injustice,” McBryde discusses her background as a Nicaraguan-American, her commitment to her faith and shares the tools she uses to battle injustice whenever and wherever it appears. In a journey punctuated by trauma and shattering revelations within her faith, McBryde continues to represent herself and her faith as a woman, as Latinx and a woman of color, and as a leader with a voice and vision. Join us for “The Latinx Lens: Keeping Faith in the Face of Injustice” on Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. ____________ Phil Allen, Jr. is a Los Angeles-based pastor, social justice activist, filmmaker and author. His book Open Wounds explores the murder of Nate Allen—Phil Allen's grandfather—in the Jim Crow era of South Carolina and how that traumatic event resonated through generations of his family. Open Wounds – which is based on the Allen-produced documentary of the same name – will be published in February 2021. Allen is a Ph.D. student studying Christian ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.
